Guest kdramafanusa
[beijing - 2004/07/15] Korean Wave 2004 in Beijing with actress Lee Young-ae & actor Lee Seo-jin [photos from Chosun] KOREA.net July 17, 2004 Korean stars shine at Beijing show The very seat of the Chinese Communist Party's power rocked on Thursday (July 15) night to the sound of K-pop as a showcase of Korean culture took to the stage of the Great Hall of the People. "Korean Wave 2004" brought the very best of Korean fashion, pop stars as well as traditional culture, to an audience that nearly packed the 7,000 seats of the hall, which saw a fashion show and K-pop performances being held on its solemn stage for the very first time. The curtain raiser of the evening was the fashion show by designer Andre Kim, titled "Andre Kim's Fashion Art for China." Divided into five sections - Fantasy of China, Mythology of Forbidden China, Rhapsody of Korea and the Orient, Legend of Seven Veils and My Dream of Heaven - the show displayed the veteran designer's interpretation of Chinese history and culture. Pristine white ruled heavily in the first section, where models walked down the stage in various white pieces with Silver Star appliqués, all of them with an outer layer of coats of slightly iridescent transparent material, imparting a futuristic look. Enthusiastic applause from the audience greeted actress Lee Young-ae, as she took to the stage in a full evening gown in white adorned simply with aqua and blue appliqués. Lee, who recently starred in period drama "Daejanggeum" as the orphan-turned-court cook-turned-royal physician, had a snow princess-like aura standing together with her partner for the evening, actor Lee Seo-jin, star of another hit period drama, "Damo," and whose drama series "Firebird" recently wrapped up. Dramatic black-and-white stripes followed next as Kim showed how even rigid stripes can look fluid in various interpretations. A complete change of pace was the presentation of bright tangerine pieces, some of them shown mixed with white, red and pink. Pastel colors such as pink and mint showed up in various shades, a surprise from the designer known for his dramatic solid colors and equally dramatic and fancy gold lattice appliqués. Fitting tributes to China, there were several red evening dresses in slim silhouettes. The sophisticated color palette of the evening also featured a full gown in antique brown as well as pieces featuring piles of fuchsia and orange. Lee Young-ae, in a gossamer baby-pink dress with a dusting of small pink appliqués, seemed to float on stage as she acted out a scene of departing lovers with Lee Seo-jin. With a popular love ballad playing in the background, the two looked very much like a sorrowful couple whose love cannot be fulfilled, never to meet again. If anyone ever wondered why celebrity actors and actresses are given center stage in Andre Kim's fashion shows, that scene was a reminder: The shows are intended not merely to present his latest pieces but to showcase a feeling. Prints of classical beauties from famous Western paintings such as Venus, as well as Egyptian beauties in earth tones, swayed on the models. Kim also recalled the lavish and extravagant designs that have been the hallmark of his 40-year career with models parading down in his signature bold, dramatic colors with lots of gold appliqués. Rich dark blue, jade and purple were embellished with gold appliqués with a dragon motif. Quilted jackets also featured prominently. The sound of Buddhist chanting marked the arrival of one of the highlights of Andre Kim fashion shows as a model wearing seven layers of jackets took off each layer in dramatic sweeps. Red, orange, blue, purple, fuchsia and jade-green floor-length jackets were unveiled to reveal a jade-green dress with a gold sash. A parade of "hanbok," or traditional Korean costume, worn by the royalty of the Joseon period served as a nice introduction of the rich Korean colors and the beauty of the elegant line of hanbok. No fashion show would ever be complete without a spectacular wedding gown to top it all off and Andre Kim did not disappoint, as star-of-the-moment Lee Young-ae took to the stage in a wedding gown with a full skirt featuring off-the-shoulder, three-tiered sleeves. The neckline decorated with sparkling material transformed the actress into a dazzling bride in Lee Seo-jin's arms. The rest of the evening was a potpourri of performances including traditional dances by Little Angels, a group of young artists, and electrical violinist Eugene Park, who showed how classical music, freshly reinterpreted, can be just as dynamic as any pop or rock number. The highlights of the evening for many young Chinese fans of K-pop, however, were performances by hit singers BoA, Lee Jung-hyun, Kang Ta, NRG and Dongbangshingi, whose music and dancing captivated the audience. Thursday night's event broadcast throughout China by the state-run CCTV was part of Korea National Tourism Organization's overseas marketing promotion effort, exploiting the popularity of Korean pop culture, also known as "hallyu" in other countries in Asia. Similar concerts were held in Seoul and Tokyo earlier this year. "A regular supply of hallyu stars is necessary to keep the public's interest," said Park Choong-kyung, director of Korea National Tourism Organization's China team, explaining the need for such concerts. The organization has also developed a new concept of hallyu to further promote Korean food, sports and traditional culture, not just pop culture, he said. More than 510,000 Chinese tourists visit Korea annually, each spending about $1,100 during their average stay of five days and four nights, according to Park. http://kois.go.kr/News/News/NewsView.asp?s...&SearchDay=
