class="at_ttl"'Roaring Currents' Claims Victory Over The Box Office

Roaring Currents

It has been a very good year for Korean actor Choi Min Suk. He's winning praise for his performance as a gangster in the Luc Bresson box office hit "Lucy," which co-stars Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman. And his new k-movie "Roaring Currents" has claimed victory over the Korean box office. The film surpassed the five million mark half way through its first week.

"Roaring Currents" quickly outpaced the record of "Kundo: Age of the Rampant," which set a record during the previous week.

According to the film's distributor CJ Entertainment, "Roaring Currents" beat several records and in a hurry. It was the most-attended movie on opening day, as well as the most attended on a business day and was best attended for a single day. The film also passed the two, three and four million attendance marks in record time. It took only 37 hours to sell its first million tickets. [more]

Previous period flicks have enjoyed notable successes, including “The King and the Clown” in 2005 and “Masquerade” in 2012. But none became box-office hits as quickly and sensationally as “Roaring Currents.”

The film premiered on July 30, with the biggest-ever opening-day viewership in Korean film history (682,778 viewers). It topped the 6 million mark in just seven days on Tuesday, four days faster than the previous record set by “The Thieves” in 2012. The film also passed the 2 million, 3 million and 4 million viewer marks the fastest in history, renewing records each day.

It seems only a matter of time before it reaches the 10 million viewer milestone ― a feat only nine Korean films have achieved.

Why is this serious, two-hour-long historical film about Adm. Yi Sun-sin suddenly sweeping the nation?

Every child in Korea knows the name of Yi, one of the nation’s most revered heroes. Cinematic brilliance also highlights the admired figure, drawing an ever increasing audience.

“There are not too many figures who everyone admires,” said Yu Gina, a professor of film and digital media at Dongguk University. “The director put all of it together on a screen in a clever manner: a venerated figure in one of his most remarkable military achievements, backed by strong historical facts, added with a impressive spectacle of action scenes, but at the same time touching people’s sentiments.”

Directed by Kim Han-min and following his recent success with the historical action film “War of the Arrows,” “Roaring Currents” centers on the historic Battle of Myeongryang in 1592 at the dawn of the Japanese invasion of Korea (1592-1598). In the film, Yi uses a brilliant strategy to destroy 330 Japanese warships with only 12 ships under his command.

Others have said that people connect with the film by observing the personal side of a hero. “We all know that Yi Sun-sin is a great hero, but the film depicts him less as a hero and more as a human being with fear and weaknesses,” said film critic Jeon Chan-il.

“The admiral was fighting within the populace, without ever standing out. Just like all of us, Adm. Yi has fears especially on the brink of a gruesome battle. But in the midst of all that, he decides to make a move to overcome that fear. Overcoming fear is what people ultimately saw, cheered and were inspired by.”

Director Kim said he made the film based on his honest reflection after reading “Nanjung Ilgi (The War Diary of Yi Sun-sin).”

“He was a soldier with a humble heart who lived fully with his own set of principles and national vision. I think that is what Yi’s leadership is about,” Kim added.

Just as the director hoped, it was Yi’s leadership that highlighted the film for the viewers.

“We all missed a great leader who truly thinks of his people,” said one movie goer.

According to critic Jeon, Yi lived out the definition of servant leadership: “a selfless leader who led his troops only to save the people, not for himself nor his benefits.”

“He was willing to take high risks for greater return for the people,” Jeon said. “This kind of sacrifice and fidelity is what the people expect from their leader. But due to circumstances, people only see their absence in today’s society through the film. They earnestly long for leaders like Yi.”

Yi Sun-sin syndrome is alive in bookstores as well. Sales of books on Yi Sun-sin have risen by 54 percent in July from the same period last year at Kyobo Bookstore, the country’s largest bookstore chain. Male and female readers bought an almost equal number of books on Yi, with the 40-something age group purchasing the most.

Though people have watched “Roaring Currents” for various reasons, many agree on one thing: The film and the tale of Yi Sun-sin have resonated with them deeply.

Blockbuster Sparks Fresh Interest in Yi Sun-shin
Books about war hero Admiral Yi Sun-shin, who averted a Japanese invasion in the 16th century, are making it back on the bestseller list on the coattails of blockbuster "Roaring Currents."
Online bookstore Aladin on Tuesday said 1,400 copies of five books about Yi were sold in July, 67 percent after the film was released on July 27.
The average age of customers who bought the books on Yi is 39.8, and men and women were about evenly mixed.
Men in their 40s accounted for 18.6 percent of the total.
"The interest in the film led to interest in Yi as a human being, so the sales of books on the life of Yi are also going up," said an Aladin spokesman.

Admiral Yi Sun Sin Makes History Again With 'Roaring Currents'
zdkl69b0qsy79tbfhzwfob0dwq9ft91i.jpg
[by Nawael Khelil] Movie 'Roaring Currents' makes Korean cinema history today by setting a new record.
Within 7 days, director Kim Han Min's last movie became a big hit as more than 6.000.000 tickets have been sold since its release on July 30. With this happening, 'Roaring Currents' slays the most popular movies - called The Movies worth 10.000.000 - like 'The Thieves' (6.000.000 in 11 days), 'The Host' (12 days), 'The Attorney' (13 days), 'Miracle in Cell No7' (19 days) or 'Masquerade' (20 days).
And it will be safe to say that its success is not going to stop right there.  'Roaring Currents' will probably reach the ultimate goal of 10.000.000 sold tickets in a very short time. Following him - from afar -, the current blockbusters are 'How to train your Dragon 2', 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and 'Gundo, Age of the Rampant'.
Meanwhile, 'Roaring Currents' tells the story of the very famous battle that Amiral Yi Sun Sin won against a 330-vessels-Japanese-fleet with only 12 vessels on the Korean side. (photo by CJ Entertainment)

True leader on the silver screen

A recent film celebrating the remarkable naval victory of Korea’s most famous soldier, Joseon admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545-1598) against an invading Japanese fleet has been making box-office records, putting a new spotlight on the legendary figure and his heroic achievements. “Roaring Currents,” a film on the Battle of Myeongnyang (1597) where veteran actor Choi Min-sik plays the legendary admiral who defeats a Japanese fleet with just 15 warships, has attracted 5 million people in just four days in theaters.

The admiral has always topped the list in polls of the most respected people among Koreans. The unprecedented love for a 16th-century figure suggests a thirst for a leader with insightfulness, charisma and morals. Koreans have been repeatedly disappointed, discouraged and frustrated by irresponsible leaders amid a chain of corruption scandals and major catastrophes such as the Sewol ferry sinking. Koreans are touched by Yi’s unbelievable feat against the Japanese, and long for a similar leader with invincible will, high ethical standards, vision and devotion to the people and country. Because of disillusionment with Korea’s political reality, people are turning to an ancient leader on the silver screen.

“A soldier must be loyal and that loyalty should be toward the people,” he solemnly declared. At the height of a national crisis, he was unwavering in his confidence and stood before the people to reassure them. He was calm, wise and compassionate till the end. He was everything society needs in a leader at any period. He appeals to Korea today, which is in urgent need of direction and a breakthrough to save it from a sense of helplessness and lethargy.

The sensational phenomenon of the epic film about Yi should send a message to the elite class and leadership. Leaders in all areas must reassess the needs of employees and citizens and try to address them.

“Roaring Currents” is a good recipe to connect different generations and classes across the society. The film underscores the need to strengthen Korean history in classrooms. A movie can raise awareness of social needs in our current situation and we can draw lessons from our history and ancestors on how to survive hardships and challenges.

Movie spurs books on 16th-century Korean admiral

SEOUL, Aug. 5 (Yonhap) -- Publishers have recently released a number of new books about Yi Sun-shin, a legendary Korean war hero from the 16th century, anticipating that a current box-office hit about the hero would spark a boom of such books.

Released on Wednesday, "Roaring Currents," starring veteran actor Choi Min-shik has set various local box-office records. It became the most-attended movie on an opening day, on a business day and on a single day. It also passed the 2 million, 3 million, 4 million and 5 million marks in the fastest time in history.

On Tuesday, the seventh day of opening, the historical action flick surpassed the 6 million viewer mark, according to the movie's investor-distributor, CJ Entertainment.

It currently sits on top of the official monthly box-office rankings released by the Korean Film Council, with the animated Hollywood movie, "How to Train Your Dragon 2," in a distant second place.

"Roaring Currents" depicts Admiral Yi's astonishing victory in the historical Battle of Myeongnyang against Japan in which he conquered more than 300 Japanese ships with only 12 vessels in 1597.

The film's popularity is already affecting the local book industry, shedding new light on the legendary hero from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

Timed with the movie's release, publishers put out dozens of new sorts of books and republished best-selling novels about him such as "The Immortal Yi Sun-shin" by Kim Tak-hwan and "Song of the Sword" by Kim Hoon.

According to Kyobo Book Centre, South Korea's leading bookstore chain, there are about 150 sorts of books about the hero in the country and 1,705 copies of them were sold in the first seven months of this year, up 54 percent from the same period last year.

The increase is small yet, but Kyobo has expectations that the film's success could help further push up sales of related books.

"Books about Yi are generally popular among Koreans, so we're considering holding a special sales event for such books," said Jin Yeong-gyun, a public relations official of Kyobo.

Publishers were busy with handling a flood of orders from stores for books about Yi.

Munhakdongne Publishing Group, which published "Song of the Sword," says it released some 700 copies of the book on Monday alone, a seven-fold increase from the daily average of 100 before the film's release.

"We're now controlling the amount of delivery due to shortage of books in stock," an official with the publisher said.

‘Roaring Currents’ to open in the U.S.

06193001.jpg
“Roaring Currents,” the Korean movie that’s been breaking box office records since opening last week, will also be released in the United States.

The movie is about Admiral Yi Sun-sin (Choi Min-sik) of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) who led the country to a legendary naval victory against Japan. In the 1597 Battle of Myeongnyang, the admiral won with only 12 ships against the Japanese navy’s 300. An official from the movie distributor, CJ E&M, reportedly said that the film will open in major U.S. cities on Friday.

Although the movie will have a limited release in those cities, the official said the distributor plans to add more screenings.

It is being speculated that many Koreans living in the United States will go to see the film as it has been topping news headlines in their motherland. The movie brought in an audience of 680,000 on its July 30 opening day. It then set the record of bringing in the most viewers in one day by attracting 1.25 million to the big screen on Sunday.

As of Tuesday, the movie had more than 6.61 million people gather at local theaters, according to the Korean Film Council.

Park watches movie on 16th-century Korean naval hero

SEOUL, Aug. 6 (Yonhap) -- President Park Geun-hye watched a movie Wednesday about a 16th-century Korean naval hero's astonishing victory against Japan, an official said.

She went to a local theater in western Seoul along with her top aides and the head of the presidential committee for cultural prosperity, presidential spokesman Min Kyung-wook told reporters.

The rare move came hours after "Roaring Currents" surpassed 7 million viewers earlier in the day, the eighth day of opening.

The movie depicts Admiral Yi Sun-shin's victory against Japan in waters off the Korean Peninsula's southwest coast in 1597, when he defeated more than 130 warships with a dozen vessels.

Yi is one of Korea's most respected leaders and his statute sits in Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul near the presidential office.

Park borrowed a famous quote Yi sent to his king ahead of the battle -- "12 ships are still left to me" -- in 2004 when she was elected as the leader of the predecessor of her ruling Saenuri Party amid a sharp drop in public support.

Park has suffered a series of setbacks in recent months, especially over April's deadly ferry sinking that left more than 300 people dead or missing, mostly high school students.

President Park Geun-hye visits a Seoul movie theater to watch Roaring Currents. Presidents Office

In South Korea, a trip to the movies can also be an opportunity for a politician to show that she is in touch with ordinary people.

President Park Geun-hye went to see the historical naval-hero film “Roaring Currents” Wednesday with several of her aides. She said she enjoyed the movie because it had a good story, but the presidential office also issued a rare statement on Ms. Park’s trip to the theater.

“The movie is about the people, public officials and soldiers working together to overcome a national crisis,” presidential spokesman Min Kyung-wook said.

Mr. Min also said Ms. Park urged the nation to emulate the movie’s hero, Adm. Yi Sun-shin, and have the courage to face difficulties.

The movie, which has been breaking box-office records almost every day since opening last week, is about the most famous naval battle in 1597 in which Adm. Yi defeated a Japanese warship fleet that outnumbered his own by 10 to 1.

The admiral is known as South Korea’s greatest war hero and is often cited by politicians as a role model; his statue guards the main boulevard in downtown Seoul, with the presidential office just a few miles behind.

Other politicians have used a trip to the cinema to show that they are in tune with every day people.

Back in October 2012, then-opposition presidential candidate Moon Jae-in shed tears after watching “Masquerade,” a hit movie about a king who hires a humble acrobat as a body double amid threats against his life. Another opposition presidential candidate Ahn Chul-soo saw the film ahead of the December election, attracting a great deal of attention from both media and voters.

Ms. Park has suffered a series of setbacks in recent months, especially over April’s ferry sinking that left more than 300 people dead or missing, mostly high school students.

Her approval ratings have also dropped sharply as she fumbled over personnel appointments and the government’s poor handling of a series of accidents, including the shooting spree at a military camp and hazing in the army, which prompted some local media to question her leadership.

“President Park has said she would devote everything for the country. She should show leadership to overcome the ferry disaster and root out the persistent problem in the military,” Dong-A Ilbo, a leading local newspaper said in an editorial Wednesday.
