[HanCinema's Drama Review] "High School - Love On" Episode 19

With this episode "High School - Love On" moves into the final stretch. The opening title spells out in full clarity that we've just about reached the point where Woo-hyeon and Seul-bi will separate, although, as the drama's first scene noted, they are almost certainly going to reunite. Consequently most of the focus here is on tying up the drama's spare plotlines. Which is a problem, because most of these plot points aren't well-defined enough to have coherent resolutions.

The result is an hour of everyone basically just being friends. There are some bumps along the way- three trips to the emergency room that I counted, all for different characters. Yeah, that's a pretty excessive way to try and drive up the dramatic stakes. And the effectiveness is only further lessened by the fact that all of these instances were fairly last minute. Like most of "High School - Love On" lately, there hasn't been any real buildup.

About the only thing that I learned from this episode is that Korea has really nice indoor winter parks. Seriously, that whole montage was pretty remarkable. Obscure winter sports, dogs, tubes? I only wish I knew what such institutions were called so I could go one. Note that it's not a particularly good sign when the nicest thing I can think of to say about an episode is that it makes for a fairly effective commercial advertisement.

On one level I can understand the appeal of having a mostly happy fun-filled episode after all the bad things that have happened. The ending for "The Full Sun" honestly didn't make that much logical sense, but I was willing to accept a little incoherence because all the characters had been through so much and had made a genuine effort to improve as people. By contrast, Woo-hyeon is still picking fights for no good reason. That part of the opening alone is a fairly good indicator of how little character development there's actually been.

"High School - Love On", for its promising beginning and sometimes intriguing storylines, has cumulatively not actually been much of a narrative at all. Even the supernatural aspects haven't shown much purpose. Writ large the drama has just been a vehicle for Woohyn and Lee Seong-yeol to do some acting work that's not so intensive it damages their normal performance schedules. For fans this is an all right enough concept. But as serious storytelling "High School - Love On" has left a lot to be desired.

RECAP

Seul Bi is rescued from Jae Seok by Woo Hyun. Sung Yeol manages to open the door for them just before collapsing. At the hospital, they learn he's exhausted, but fine. Once Sung Yeol's up and around, he asks Woo Hyun for help getting his parents back together -- he's found a divorce petition in his house. At gym class, the kids make plans to help Young Eun's family pay for her little sister's surgery. Jae Seok, watching the students from a balcony, is given a wristband by Da Yool, who tells him he should have been nicer. They hold a fundraiser through Woo Hyun's rice cake shop. Even Jae Seok is put to work, helping prepare orders after his former lackeys defend him against bullies from another school. The teachers take up a collection to add to the sum. Young Eun is ungrateful at first, but Se Na makes up with her and she accepts the money.

To take Sung Yeol's mind off things, the kids go to a winter amusement park. Back at home Woo Hyun shares a moment with Ji Hye, telling her he likes her mothering. Sung Yeol is back to his old self, able to eat a meal with Seul Bi without going nuts, wishing his dad well as the cop heads off to work.  At Ji Hye's birthday celebration Seul Bi, Woo Hyun, and Sung Yeol pretend to be in favor of the divorce in order to shock them into realizing that the reasons for splitting up were silly. 

Sung Yeol decides to run away for awhile, to clear his head and come back a better person. As he crosses the street, Sunbae arranges for a truck to hit him. Woo Hyun pushes Sung Yeol out of the way, and Seul Bi comes to hold Woo Hyun and they brace for impact. At the last minute, Sunbae interposes himself between the truck and the kids and uses his powers to protect them. At the hospital, an injured Woo Hyun learns that Sung Yeol is in a coma and Seul Bi is nowhere to be found...


With his last ouce of strength, Sung Yeol opens the door.

MY TAKE

Okay, I take it back, Jae Seok is apparently reformed, even if they did have to drag him by his ear (literally) to get him to work in the rice shop. I really thought that guy was just a bad guy all around, since just earlier in the episode he was going to blow Seul Bi's secret wide open and didn't feel bad about it. I'm guessing he just asks himself the same things as everyone else -- "Who am I? Where am I going? How long have I got?"

And yay, Sung Yeol is back! But they had to ruin it with tragedy. I think we've seen enough to frown about, don't you guys? But I guess they had to have something else go wrong to keep the tension up. The tear-jerker ending was kind of annoying, but I was glad to see Sung Yeol smiling, Woo Hyun back with Seul Bi, and the three together again. Here's what I don't understand: if he was back to normal, why leave? He seemed to be playing the part of the good friend, loyal brother, loving son rather well. I dunno, I guess they needed a reason for him to be crossing the street?



Sunbae had to get involved one more time. Only at the end, it seems like he tried to protect them? Maybe because Seul Bi was with them, and he realized that he would do anything for her? But I thought his powers were taken away by the President of Earth Angels. Maybe he was just prohibited from using them and not actually de-powered? But last episode, he tried something and it didn't work and...never mind, I'm probably overthinking it. It did seem like he got hit by the truck, too, while trying to protect them. Can he be hurt that way?


Da Yool gives a band to Jae Seok. "You should have been nicer," she tells him.

Whoa. We have one episode left. One episode where they get to untangle what plot threads remain. Will Sung Yeol's stepmom and dad stay together? Where's Seul Bi? Will we see her again? Is Sung Yeol okay? And what happened to Sunbae? Here's hoping they end on a high note. I'm deducting points for the messed up ending after teasing us with happiness.

I think this song really described WH and SB. In drama, WH and SB begin fall in love each other on summer and/or beginning fall season. We knew from very first scene in episode 1 they will meet each other again in spring 2016. And WH always waiting for SB to meet again

its not different with review by javabeans from dramabeans. She said HSLO was promising in the beginning but she lost interest because its dragging story and format airing (with multiple preemptions). She said HSLO was a waste of KSR time and talent   But she said the romance is sweet and the real age gap smoothed over by how profesional everyone in acting.

However I disagree with her about KSR. I think HSLO wasn't a waste of KSR time and talent..this is her first drama as female lead. Eventhough hslo is just high-school themed drama and not high profile drama from the beginning. We knew from presscon before hslo airing..seulbi is the character and role which KSR wanna try. KSR explained that so far she always acted serious role, so this time she want try a comedic, funny, cheerfull role as Seulbi. and I think she succeded acted as Seulbi. Actually I also marathoned the queen's classroom (KSR's last year drama) whean HSLO is still airing. She was so different. In TQC she acted as serious and always rank one-student. and in HSLO she acted as angel turned human SB which her character is really different. I think KSR role as SB proved to us that she has a wide acting range. and the last of course..she has a great chemistry with WH, which again proved to us she can overshadowing their huge age gap and make us believe their in same age as high school student which fall in love each other..
