‘The Assassin’ Sweeps 10th Asian Film Awards

Patrick Frater
Asia Bureau Chief Variety.com

Hou Hsiao-hsien’s “The Assassin” was the major — and unsurprising — winner at the 10th edition of the Asian Film Awards.

It was named as best film with Hou also earning the best director prize, topping off a total of eight awards across performance and technical categories.

Shu Qi, the film’s troubled assassin, was named best actress, while Zhou Yun took best supporting actress. Mark Lee Ping-bing collected yet another award for the film’s sumptuous cinematography, both indoors and in stunning exteriors in China’s interior.

The minimalist and dialog-heavy martial arts drama which had its premiere in the Cannes film festival, also collected prizes for best design, music and sound.

That sweep left relatively thin pickings for other contenders. Star Korean performer Lee Byung-hun was named best actor for his role in hit drama “Inside Men,” while Japanese superstar Tadanobu Asano earned the best supporting actor prize for “Journey to the Shore.” Jia Zhang-ke collected a best script award for his “Mountains May Depart.”

Hong Kong drama ‘Port of Call’ earned two awards; one for actress Jessie Li as best newcomer, one for its editing.

Indian period piece “Bajirao Mastani” was the winner in the best visual effects category. Korea’s “The Throne” earned the best costume prize.

The awards, which are now the responsibility of an ‘Academy,’ were presented Thursday evening at the Venetian Hotel in Macau.

Slick, stylish and with its cross-hairs unflinchingly trained at the corrupt politicians in control of the country, Inside Men is an angry, aggressive thriller, but one with a genuine sense of fun too. Lee Byung-hun returns to the limelight as a charismatic gangster who tries his hand at politics, only to uncover a corrupt underworld even more criminal than the streets. Showy direction, taut writing and a string of engaging performances make Inside Men a real treat.

Lee Byung-hun Snags Best Actor at Asian Film Awards
THE THRONE Takes AFA for Best Costume Design

by Pierce Conran / KoBiz

KDQKAYoueyyQPnejiDij.png

The 10th edition of the Asian Film Awards took place at The Venetian in Macau on Thursday, March 17th. While HOU Hsiao-hsien’s The Assassin was the big winner of the night with eight awards, including nods for Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress (SHU Qi), a pair of Korean nominees didn’t leave empty-handed, as Inside Men and The Throne were recognized for Best Actor and Best Costume Design, respectively.

Beating out nominees such as Donnie YEN (Ip Man 3) and FENG Xiaogang (Mr. Six), LEE Byung-hun earned the Best Actor award for his part in WOO Min-ho’s hit thriller Inside Men. The Throne earned the Best Costume Design prize for LEE Ji-yeon and SHIM Hyun-seop, and was the only film to beat The Assassin during the show.

Going into the night, the major Korean nominee was RYOO Seung-wan’s Veteran, which was nominated for Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Editing, but as expected, HOU’s martial arts arthouse hit left little room for other nominees. Yet the Korean presence was significant at the AFAs this year, as each category featured at least one nominee.

The evening was also hosted by Korean singer and actress Clara, while entertainment was provided by K-pop supergroup A-Pink which performed two of its hit songs.

INSIDE MEN to Infiltrate Hong Kong
Theatrical Release to Follow HKIFF Selection

by Pierce Conran / KoBiz

dpgkTlcACPpVPiLbvXFV.png

Following its Best Actor win for LEE Byung-hun at the Asian Film Awards in Macau and its selection for the Hong Kong International Film Festival this month, political thriller Inside Men has secured a theatrical release in Hong Kong, which will kick off on April 21st.

Released in Korea last November, Inside Men became a massive hit for distributor Showbox, garnering 7.07 million viewers (USD 48.43 million) during its initial run and another 2.08 million viewers (USD 14.52 million) when the director’s cut version (Inside Men: The Original) was released at the end of the year.

Directed by WOO Min-ho, who previously made Man Of Vendetta (2010) and The Spies (2012), Inside Men features LEE as a gangster who is double-crossed when he uncovers the secret relationship between a major corporation and a presidential aspirant. After losing his arm and laying flow for a few years, he returns to get his revenge.

CHO Seung-woo (Marathon, 2005) co-stars as the driven district attorney whom he teams up with and BAEK Yoon-sik (Save the Green Planet, 2003) features as the editor of a major newspaper with skin in the game. The film was a major return to form for LEE after the disappointing returns of period action-thriller Memories of the Sword (2015), in which he starred alongside JEON Do-yeon.

Inside Men has already been released in Australia and New Zealand and bowed in Japanese theaters on March 10th.

Now showing in Hong Kong

Film review: Inside Men – slick Korean political corruption thriller
Lee Byung-hun slashes his way through South Korea’s corrupt political landscape in Woo Min-ho’s tense gangster movie

James Marsh South China Morning Post

4/5 stars

Hot on the heels of the excellent Veteran , Inside Men is a similarly slick South Korean thriller exposing high-level corruption in equally brutal and compelling fashion. Koreans have become increasingly frustrated by the cronyism among large family-run corporations, top-tier politicians and even the media. Clearly voting with their feet, they have made both films huge hits at the box office.

The success of Inside Men at home will come as no small relief to leading man Lee Byung-hun, who spent much of 2015 in the tabloid headlines for all the wrong reasons, while his last film, Memories Of The Sword, flopped. Here he’s back in familiar territory, as Ahn, a small gang leader who is double-crossed and disfigured by his political employers, only to orchestrate their downfall in a skilfully engineered revenge plot.

Ahn’s unlikely collaborator comes in the form of Cho Seung-woo’s ambitious young prosecutor, whose own career is suffering due to his lack of high-level connections. Together they aim to expose a secret slush fund that ties Mirae Motors and Hangyul Bank to a political candidate vying for office. Add to the mix the editor-in-chief of a leading newspaper with his own political agenda, and the scandal could bring them all to their knees.

Woo Min-ho’s typically polished direction see events play out closer to a blood-splattered gangster flick. With Lee Byung-hun centre stage, the result is hugely entertaining.

Inside Men opens on April 21

"Inside Men" Trailer International Festival Premiere | Far East Film Festival 18

This intense study of corruption and power games tells the story of a newspaper editor who makes a secret deal with his publication's powerful sponsors to promote a presidential candidate. When his hand is cut off as punishment for an imprudence, the editor's assistant plots to take his revenge through an ambitious young prosecutor. A powerful Scorsese-esque thriller whose ambiguous characters engage the viewer in a shady web of deceit.
