New movies opened this week didn't quite make their mark. As today is Friday, hope many more moviegoers will watch Inside Men: The Original over the weekend. Fighting!

‘Inside Men’ heads for 10 million viewers

image

Korean political thriller film “Inside Men” is expected to become the first R-rated local movie to garner 10 million moviegoers, with its latest director’s cut faring well at the box office.

According to the Korean Film Council on Sunday, the 181-minute director’s cut of the film, titled “Inside Men: The Original,” garnered 1.4 million as of Saturday.

Alongside the 7 million admissions of the commercial movie, the total figure of its viewers currently stands at 8.4 million.

The number has already surpassed that of the most-watched R-rated film “Friend” released in 2001, which attracted 8.1 million moviegoers.

Industry insiders said the film’s success comes from veteran actors’ great acting ability and a well-made plot. Lee Byung-hun, playing a political henchman, Cho Seung-woo portraying a prosecutor with a strong sense of justice and Baek Yun-sik playing a manipulative editor-in-chief all gave sterling performances.

Apart from their acting, the film drew many Korean moviegoers as it sheds light on the nation’s current social issue and the corruption of the ruling class. The movie then ends with a brilliant counterattack of the prosecutor (Cho), who has no well-connected parents, against the corrupt conglomerate and media.

The record-breaking film also met considerable commercial success at the local box office accumulating more than 64 billion won ($53 million).

[Introducing Spottoon]

Webtoons as the go-to source material for Korean dramas and films

Source: Spottoon.com via Hancinema.net

photo671491.jpg

You may not all be familiar with webtoons or webcomics but you have definitely encountered webtoon adaptations over the past couple of years if you're a fan of Korean dramas or films. While they haven't taken the world by storm (yet), they are massively popular in their home country of South Korea, where 1 in 3 people read webtoons on a weekly basis. It's a common sight to see people reading episodes of their favorite series on their daily commute and there are many reasons why. Webtoons are portable since they are easily accessible through your phone and the format is visually engaging. When done right, a webtoon series contains a story world filled with interesting characters that you can get emotionally attached to but at the same time it doesn't demand a huge commitment from readers. All series are broken down into succinct episodes that you can read at your own leisure.

The South Korean entertainment industry has taken notice and over the last decade many webtoons have been made into films and television dramas. Popular films such as Secretly, Greatly (Movie "Secretly and Greatly"), and the current box office hit, The Insider are all based off of popular webtoons, as are the current dramas The Imaginary Cat (Drama "Imaginary Cat") and "Cheese in the Trap". This year's drama line-up also includes other adaptations such as "The Idle Mermaid" which is based on the webtoon Cat and Dog.

This trend will likely continue because webtoons are a treasure trove of original stories. They come with an established fanbase and the format itself is a narrative and visual map that the producers can use as a foundation. As Korean films and television series continue to gain overseas fans, could they succeed in bringing a spotlight to webtoons as well?

Companies are beginning to realize that webtoons can appeal to broader audience outside of Korea, both as a format and as an already established database of stories that are ready to be turned into other content. There are an overwhelming number of webtoons that have a depth of imagination that could get any reader hooked and it may be time for the world to realize the potential of webtoons. Established webtoons are now being translated and released into the foreign markets and emerging artists in other countries like the U.S. are taking up the format to create works of their own. Many hope that it will have the same kind of success and growth that it is having in Korea. What do you think about the future of webtoons?

Check out some titles over at Spottoon and see which webtoons you'd like to see adapted next!

"The Good Dinosaur" sweeps weekend box office

SEOUL, Jan. 11 (Yonhap) -- Pixar's animation "The Good Dinosaur" has taken over the South Korean box office on its opening weekend, data by the official market tracker showed Monday.

The movie set in a universe where dinosaurs never went extinct on Earth logged 458,815 admissions between Friday and Sunday, data compiled by the Korean Film Council showed.

An Apatosaurus named Arlo and his Neanderthal friend embark on a journey in "The Good Dinosaur" to find the dinosaur's family after a rainstorm washes him miles away from home.

Released in time for the winter school holidays, "The Good Dinosaur" is believed to have ridden on the success of Pixar predecessor "Inside Out," according to film analysts.

The director's cut of "Inside Men," a South Korean film about society-wide corruption, stayed in second place with 384,477 audience members.

The Woo Min-ho feature film portrays a dystopian society in which politicians, the press, the wealthy, law enforcement authorities and organized criminals try to mooch off of one another.

"The Himalayas" slid two notches to third place with 374,933 viewers, but broke the 7-million-viewer milestone on Sunday.

The movie based on a true story follows mountaineer Um Hong-gil who sets out to retrieve the body of his late junior climber on Mount Everest.

Compared to the same period last year, the total number of viewers has increased by 90,000 (0.6%), and the number of Korean film viewers increased by 7.16 million. Such a big change owes to the great performance of The Priests and Inside Men.

What Do 'Inside Men' And 'Misaeng' Have In Common?

BY Julie Jones | KDramaStars.com

Both the film "Inside Men" and the cable series "Misaeng" can be described as being successful, but there is something else they have in common. The hit film and the critically acclaimed cable drama are both based on stories created by webtoon artist Yoon Tae Ho.

Yoon's webtoons may enjoy such success because they offer a different kind of storytelling focusing on real-life situations and the often overwhelming tension that complicates the lives of ordinary people. His comics also raise important questions about the nature of power and its abuse.

And the success of these adaptations has focused new attention on the webtoon artist.

According to the Korean Film Council, Yoon Tae Ho began drawing cartoons 22 years ago and first published his work in 1993. He was recognized in 2001 for a webtoon that featured a romance between two senior citizens.

One of his comics was adapted into the 2010 mystery thriller "Moss," starring Park Hae Il and Jung Jae Young. But his big breakthrough happened with the success of the 2014 cable drama "Misaeng," which starred Im Si Wan, Kang So Ra, Kang Ha Neul and Lee Sung Min. It took Yoon Tae Hoon three years to write the drama about Jang Geu Rae, a former baduk prodigy who abandons the game to become a temporary office worker. The time spent was worth it because "Misaeng" earned critical praise.

The drama caught the attention of Korea's office workers because it so accurately depicted the power struggles within the office workplace. No matter how hard Jang Geu Rae worked to establish himself at his company, his prospects were doomed by office politics and preconceptions.

The comic received the President's Prize in the Korean Contents Award. The drama went on to win several awards, including a Baeksang Arts Award for Best Drama.

The film "Inside Men," starring Lee Byung Hun, Jo Sung Woo and Baek Yoon Sik, was also based on one of Yoon Tae Ho's stories. And it is also a success. The film grossed almost $12 million in its first four days and set the record for the most viewed R-rated k-movie in a single day. The crime story features people who wield and abuse political power, including the editor at a conservative newspaper, gangsters seeking political influence and the businessmen molding the political careers of their lackeys.

And Yoon is not done with his storytelling. He finished another webtoon, titled "Pah In: The Greedy Bastards" about smugglers and is serializing a second season of "Misaeng."

Keep up the good work Yoon Tae Ho!

According to the database of the Korean Film Council, “Inside Men” had recorded 7,070,794 in attendance as of Wednesday.

The film has been well received by viewers since it was released Nov. 19, and the 50-minutes-longer director‘s version has also attracted the public.

If the film record 9 million admissions, it will be the first R-rated movie to record such a mark.

Directed by Woo Min-ho, who previously directed “Who killed Jesus?” (2000), “The Spies” (2012) and “Man of Vendetta” (2010), the movie was cast with Lee Byung-hun, Cho Seung-woo and Baek Yoon-sik, who have a reputation of excellent acting skills.

It portrays a story of loyalty and betrayal. The director’s version shows additional scenes telling the stories of characters in the past, and added new opening and ending scenes.
