The news on his habit of holding the nape of persons securely using his palm must have resurface. Such gesture from him made me week on the knees, too so it's all good that the public being reminded of it again xD

< 응답하라 1994 >가 끝났다. 반응이 뜨거웠던 작품과 캐릭터라 감회가 다를 것 같다.
유연석: 너무 큰 사랑을 받았고, 칠봉이라는 캐릭터를 정말 많이 응원해주셔서 감개무량하다. 특히 이전 작품들에서 여러 캐릭터를 보여드렸지만, 악역 이미지가 좀 강했는데 (웃음) 착하고 좋은 캐릭터로 각인될 수 있는 기회가 되어 의미가 깊고 좋다.

연기자로서 그런 인물을 연기하는 즐거움도 있었을까.
유연석: 어떻게 보면 현실에서 저렇게 순애보적인 사랑을 할 수 있을까 싶은 인물인데, 그런 캐릭터를 연기할 수 있는 기회를 얻었으니 참 영광이지. 하지만 칠봉이 같은 인물이건, 악한 인물이건 캐릭터의 접근 방식은 사실 비슷하기 때문에 연기로서의 즐거움은 크게 다르지 않다. 현재 대본에 나와 있지 않은 그 인물의 과거를 고민해보고 습관이 무엇일지 가장 좋아하는 게 무엇일지 고민한다. 그러면서 말투나 이런 것들을 하나하나 구축하는 그런 것들.

그렇다면 본인이 보기에 칠봉이는 어떤 과거를 가졌기에 지금 성격을 갖게 된 거 같나.
유연석: 가족에 대한 부재 때문에 자라오면서 사람 냄새 나는 곳에 대한 애착이 생기고, 자신을 엄마처럼 챙겨주는 사람에게 끌리게 되었던 것 같다. 그것이 그의 성장과정에서의 큰 포인트라고 본다. 또한 그럼에도 운동 경기를 하는 선수이니 승부 근성도 있고 페어플레이할 줄 아는 사람이 된 것 아닐까. 그래서 드라마의 결말에서도 용기 있게 상대방의 마음을 인정하고 떠날 수 있었을 거고.

그것이 나정이를 사랑하게 된 계기라고 본 건가.
유연석: 나정이가 굉장히 밝고 소탈하지만 또 어질러 있는 걸 치우고 아픈 아이 챙겨주고, 공부 못하면 가르쳐주는, 엄마처럼 나를 대해주는 모습에 끌릴 수밖에 없었던 것 같다.

그렇다면 칠봉이가 가진 가족애에 대한 결핍을 보여주는 게 중요했을 텐데.
유연석: 그래서 초반에 공중전화에서 엄마에게 삐삐 음성 남기는 장면을 신경 써서 촬영했다. 그 장면에서 보여주는 칠봉이의 외로움과 가족에 대한 부재가 결국에는 나정이와 하숙집 친구들에게 끌리는 가장 큰 요인이니까. 평소에도 칠봉이가 많이 웃는 건 가족에 대한 부재를 항상 안고 있기 때문이라고 봤다. 그럴수록 아무렇지 않다고 웃고 사람들에게 긍정적인 모습을 보이려 하지. 칠봉이는 많이 웃는다, 애써. 마지막에 나정이랑 헤어질 때도.

그런 순정파적인 면이 있으면서 승부 근성 역시 있기에 매력적인 인물이 됐던 것 같다. 가령 하숙집에 들어와 나정에게 인사할 때 머쓱해하지 않고 오히려 당당해 보였다.
유연석: 대본상에 그냥 나정이가 새 하숙생을 궁금해 할 때 문을 열고 나온다고만 나왔지만 나는 당당해야 한다고 생각했다. 그 장면 전에 칠봉이가 쓰레기 형과 캐치볼로 정면 승부를 하고 일종의 선전포고를 하지 않았나. 그런 의미에서 하숙집에 들어왔을 때 머쓱해하기보다는, 나는 이제 네 곁에 있을 거고 내 마음을 솔직하게 보여주고 너에게 다가갈 거라는 마음을 담아 바라봤다.

그런 디테일한 탐구가 시청자에게 효과적으로 전달될 때의 쾌감이 있을까.
유연석: 배우가 생각하고 느끼는 만큼 시청자도 느끼고 받아들인다고 생각한다. 그래서 배우가 캐릭터에 임하는 자세도 중요하고. 내가 아는 만큼 전달이 되는 거지. 항상 급하게 돌아가는 현장이라 해도 어떤 것들을 항상 생각하고 표현하려 한다. 전에는 그걸 전하는 방식이 서툴렀다면 조금씩 소통하는 방법을 알아가는 것 같다. 스킬이 많아지는 거랑은 좀 다른 건데, 시청자나 관객과 소통하는 연결고리가 조금씩 두터워지면서 조금씩 나아진다고 본다.

타인과 소통하려면 그 이전에 본인 스스로 인물에 대해 납득하는 과정이 중요할 텐데.
유연석: 가령 칠봉이의 경우, 나도 그런 짝사랑을 해봤고 그걸 고백하고 나서 고맙다는 얘기가 나오더라. 그래서 드라마의 대사들도 참 공감이 됐다. 물론 간혹 이해가 잘 되지 않는 경우들도 있겠지만 그 인물이 뭔가 현실과 동떨어지거나 이해할 수 없는 행동을 할 때는 그럴 수밖에 없는 간절한 무언가가 있다고 생각한다. 악한 캐릭터가 나쁜 짓을 할 때도 얘가 왜 그럴지를 고민해야지.

가령 < 늑대소년 >의 지태 같은 미운 인물의 경우에도?
유연석: 나는 그 친구에게 동정이 갔던 게, 아마도 어릴 때 엄마 없이 자라며 아버지 밑에서 잘못된 사랑을 지켜보며 자란 아이라고 생각했다. 그리고 사랑을 제대로 온전하게 받아보지 못한 아이고. 그렇기 때문에 사랑한다고 말하는 방식을 잘 모르는 거다. 나 스스로 생각한 설정은, 모두가 지태를 미워하고 싫어할 때 처음 따뜻한 관심을 보여준 사람이 순이(박보영)라 진심으로 좋아하게 된 건데, 잘못된 사랑의 방식을 보고 자라서 돈과 힘으로 해결하려 한다고 봤다. 그게 맞는 건줄 아는 거지. 때문에 나 역시 연기를 할 때는 이게 틀린 게 아니라 맞는 거라고 생각하고, 그럴수록 관객들은 그 캐릭터를 더 나쁘게 느낀다고 봤다.

순이에게 “할머니, 할아버지 될 때까지 사이좋게 지내기로 했잖아”라고 말할 때 측은한 표정을 지은 것도 그래서일까.
유연석: 감독판에 들어간 장면인데, 원래는 그걸 중요하게 생각했다. 그게 이 친구가 순이를 좋아할 수밖에 없는 이유를 설명하는 거니까. 둘만의 추억 하나를 이야기하고, 너 예전에 나랑 잘 지내자 해놓고 왜 그러느냐고 묻는 거지.

캐릭터 표현도 표현이지만, 각 역에 따라 외형이 굉장히 잘 변하는 것 같다. 지태가 비열한 느낌이었다면 MBC < 혼 >에서는 서늘한 악역이었고, < 혜화, 동 >의 한수는 찌질해 보이고.
유연석: 처음에는 개성 강한 얼굴이 아니라는 게 배우로서의 콤플렉스였는데 이제는 이걸 해도 그럭저럭 잘 어울리고 저걸 해도 그럭저럭 어울리는 외모라는 게 장점이라 생각한다. 그래서 외적인 요소를 결정할 때 신경을 많이 쓴다. 의상이나 소품 준비하는 분들은 피곤하실 수도 있다. 안경만 해도 뿔테냐 반무테냐, 다리 위치가 위에 있느냐 아래 있느냐에 따라 인상이 달라진다. 가령 < 혼 >이나 < 건축학개론 > 때는 반무테 안경을 썼다. 그러면 눈매가 날카롭게 강조되면서 비호감 캐릭터가 된다. 좀 더 인텔리처럼 보이고 싶으면 뿔테나 메탈을 쓰고.

심지어 < 혜화, 동 >의 한수 같은 경우에는 잘생겨 보이지도 않는데 (웃음) 칠봉이를 기억하는 사람들은 앞으로 잘생긴 모습을 기대하지 않을까.
유연석: 칠봉이가 외형적으로 멋있었다기보다는 특유의 긍정적이고 건강한 모습을 좋아해주셨다고 본다. 앞서 말했지만 나는 좀 심심하게 생긴, 꽃미남과는 거리가 있는 배우다. 그리고 나를 좋아해주는 분들이 칠봉이 하나만으로 나를 좋아해주는 건 아니라고 본다. < 응답하라 1994 >를 보고 나를 처음 알게 된 분들도 예전 작품을 다시 보고 이 배우가 이런 것도 했구나, 하며 나를 좋게 보고 칭찬해주시는 것 같다. 그렇기 때문에 나중에 칠봉이와는 다른 찌질한 역할을 한다 하더라도 왜 저런 걸 하느냐고 생각하진 않을 거다. 그보다는 이 배우가 다른 모습을 보여준다는 걸 더 좋아하실 테니까. 다만 내가 얼마나 연기를 잘해서 보는 이들이 어느 정도 공감할 수 있을지는 걱정이지.

또 다시 새로운 캐릭터를 보여줄 생각인 건데, 실제로 상당한 다작 배우다.
유연석: 나는 어떤 캐릭터를 연기하고 집중해나가면서 전에 연기했던 캐릭터를 잊게 된다. 오히려 공백이 생기면 잔상이 남을 수도 있고. 사실 나 스스로는 다작이라 생각해본 적이 없다. 그냥 이 작품 끝난 뒤에 다음 캐릭터를 또 할 수 있는 기회가 주어지면 그 제안에 감사해 하며 참여했던 거지. 평소에도 배우고 경험하는 걸 좋아하기 때문에 다양한 캐릭터를 만나는 건 즐거운 일이다.

하지만 그러는 동안 정작 자연인 유연석으로서 경험할 시간은 줄어들지 않나.
유연석: 다행히 작품 하는 중에도 짧게나마 남는 시간을 잘 활용하기 때문에 자연인으로서의 나를 포기하며 일을 하진 않았던 것 같다. 그리고 무엇보다 배우로서 촬영하는 것 자체도 내 삶이고 내 경험이지 않나. 남의 삶이라고 생각하지 않는다.

일하는 것 자체가 즐겁나.
유연석: 이 일을 포기할 수 없는 이유인데, 내가 만약 윤택한 삶을 살기 위해 돈을 버는 수단으로 원치 않는 직업을 선택한 거라면 하기 힘들었을 거다. 하지만 내가 일하는 과정 자체가 삶의 일부분이고 즐거움이기에 할 수 있다. 촬영하며 카메라가 돌아가는 순간 스스로에 대한 짜릿함도 있고, 수개월 동안 준비한 영화와 캐릭터를 관객에게 선사하고 그들이 즐거워하거나 감동할 때 정말 행복하지. 드라마는 촬영이 바쁘지만 또 즉각적인 반응을 보고 소통할 수 있으니 피곤해도 즐겁고. 내가 좋아하는 일이 직업이 되어서 좋다.

대중의 피드백이라는 점에서 < 응답하라 1994 >처럼 반응이 뜨거운 경우도 있지만 < 혜화, 동 >이나 < 열여덟, 열아홉 >처럼 영화는 좋아도 반응은 적은 경우도 있는데.
유연석: 단순히 내가 연기한 캐릭터를 많은 분들이 봐주고 많은 피드백을 준다고 그에 비례해서 좋은 것 같지 않다. 단 한 분이라도 내 연기를 보는 내내 즐거웠다면 그것만으로도 굉장히 행복한 일이다. < 혜화, 동 >의 경우 관계자들과 영화인들이 매우 좋게 봐준 작품인데, 대중적으로 많은 인기를 얻은 작품과 인기는 적어도 좋은 기억을 남긴 작품이 주는 만족감은 큰 차이가 없다. < 혜화, 동 >의 경우 관객 만 명 돌파 파티를 했는데 그때의 즐거움과 < 늑대소년 > 500만 파티를 할 때의 즐거움은 비슷하다.

< 응답하라 1994 >로 작품과 캐릭터 모두 큰 인기를 끌었는데 다시 그걸 경험하고 싶은 마음은 없나.
유연석: 10년 동안 작품을 하다 보니 많은 분에게 대중적인 사랑을 받은 작품도 있고 아닌 것도 있었다. 많이 봐줬다고 좋아하고 아니라고 실망하는 일희일비하는 단계는 아닌 것 같다. 지금 < 응답하라 1994 >가 잘 되어서 너무 기쁘지만 그렇다고 뭐가 달라지진 않을 거다. 이후에 내가 하는 걸 마음에 안 들어 하실 수도 있고, 반대로 지금보다 더 좋아하실 수도 있고. 나는 그저 끊임없이 했던 대로 조금이라도 다른 모습의 캐릭터를 보여드리는 게 내 의무고 대중에 대한 보답이라고 생각한다. 크게 달라질 건 없다.

스스로 으쓱해지는 걸 경계하는 걸까.
유연석: 굳이 경계하기보다 계속 일을 하다 보니 어느 정도 그런 사람이 된 것 같다. 이제 지켜보는 시선이 많아졌으니 더 마음을 다잡게 되기도 하고. 올해 내 목표는 이거다. 했던 대로 하자.

Dammit his lips on the pic above. If I am a make up artist, I'd have him sit in front of me quietly so that I can apply various shades of lipstick colours for the sole amusement of myself. He would be the perfect model for a lipstick but too bad it will not be materialised, lmao. Maybe he can endorse any of the lipbalm brands or something xD

Thank you for sharing this awesome and valuable footage!! The eager and passionate faces of all the actors, esp in the group numbers, actually reminded me of What's Up, and I teared up thinking about those group of kids and their dreams and hopes and their awesome teacher. 
You can still tell that he's a bit raw in his acting in this play, (I personally really liked the narrator, and LOL at his playing a jerk once again and at that fake tree) and how far he has come as an actor today. Actually, I think YYS still has leaps to go before becoming a really seasoned actor, and I hope that at some point in his career years down the line, he will go back to the small stage to really hone and perfect his craft. It seems like most serious actors well into their careers choose to go back to the small stage at some point to focus on the acting alone. 
I also realized that YYS has had a lot of luck playing against great actresses of the younger generation, including Kim Ji Won, Park Bo Young, Baek Jin Hee, and Im Joo Eun, not to name the other great but less well-known actresses from his indie works.

Wow. He tweeted that in the middle of AM1994 shooting? I wonder what it means.Selfishly, I would like him to hold off plays/musicals for another couple years, so I can see him on screen more, haha. But the small stage is really the space where an actor can focus and grow tremendously, as there is really no room for mistake, but you are also given the duration of season to really develop your character so that each performance can be unique in its own way. 
I tend to be more critical with actors/dramas/writers I love, just like I tend to be self-critical, to see areas where improvements are most needed, and that is why I still look at YYS's performances with a critical eye at times, but like you, I'm optimistic to where he will go.
Just watched Hwa-yi, and watching the sequence where KSK and YYS in the gunfire scene seemed like Samcheonpo and Chilbong engaging in this epic and freaking bloody gun-battle and just gave me mental whiplash. :-O

@luluponyazn lol sorry I must've confused you with my words ^^;; I mean he posted it on 3rd December (at that time he must've been busy with Reply 1994's live shooting, no?) but I guess he somehow managed to squeezed in sometimes in between his schedule to attend a play or something? ^^;; Ahhhhh I need to see him on the screen soon enough, too.  I don't know how will I bear the wait for his movies to be released. ;____;
Anyway, I found this on Weibo credits as tagged. Apparently he's in Jeju for a magazine photoshoot? ...poor boy omg it's freaking winter right now and he's wearing an outfit like that? :-O

i remember someone in this thread mentioned about his birthmark on his neck and i have spent some times to find out and this is what i have found ) he really has a small red birthmark on this neck on the right side you can see it quite clear in those photo
