(News Focus) Diplomatic row over THAAD hurts Chinese market for hallyu stars

SEOUL, March 5 (Yonhap) -- The management agency for Lee Kwang-soo, Kim Beom and Kim Ji-won, Korean stars who are all popular in China, experienced a huge drop in sales in the second half of last year. 

That was because their profits from the Chinese entertainment and advertising markets have effectively vanished since October when Beijing restricted Korean entertainers from working in the country in protest against Seoul's decision to deploy a high-tech U.S. anti-missile battery on its soil.

"The company has earned not a penny from China due to the political row over THAAD," Lee Jin-seong, chief of King Kong by Starship, told Yonhap News Agency on Sunday. "We did occasionally receive inquiries for advertisements until the end of last year but no contract was actually signed."

China has been one of the top consumers of Korean pop culture. But it has denied permission for Korean entertainers to perform or appear on television shows in China since October, three months after Seoul agreed to host a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system (THAAD) to better defend itself against North Korea's constant military threats. Beijing has long voiced opposition to THAAD, saying its deployment on the Korean Peninsula threatened Chinese national security interests.

After the ban, some of the popular singers, such as Psy and Hwang Chi-yeol, appeared on Chinese shows with their faces blurred out. In some cases, their appearances were edited out altogether. Most recently, China blocked access to newly updated clips of South Korean music and dramas on the country's online video sharing platforms, according to industry sources in Beijing.

There are, of course, a tiny number of A-listers who remain unaffected from the hallyu ban like Jun Ji-hyun, Song Hye-kyo, Kim Soo-hyun and Park Hae-jin. They appeared in outdoor billboards and printed media and renewed advertising contracts until recently, even though none appeared on television.

Lee said the ban is dealing a huge blow to most of the Korean stars who have given their all in the Chinese market.

Among other top-tier stars who remained active in China over the past few years were Kim Tae-hee, Song Seung-heon, Rain, Kwon Sang-woo, Son Tae-young, Lee Joon-gi, Kim Ha-neul, Park Si-hoo and Kim Beom. They received at least two to three-fold more TV appearance fees in China than in South Korea. 

The ban has deprived many smash-hit Korean TV shows and their stars a chance to make big money in mainland China.

For instance, KBS 2TV's hit romantic drama "Uncontrollably Fond," broadcast simultaneously in South Korea and China from July to September last year, has chalked up more than 4.1 billion views on China's largest online video portal Youku as of last year's end. The figure is catching up to the 4.4 billion view count of the runaway hit series "Descendants of the Sun" aired via iQIYI, also an online video service.

But Kim Woo-bin and Suzy, who starred in "Uncontrollably Fond," were unable to come even close to China because of its hallyu ban with the show's promotional activities all being canceled outright.

Gong Yoo and Lee Dong-wook, the male stars of "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God," were more victims of the THAAD fallout.

Though unable to air on Chinese television, the tvN series gained huge popularity in China, as its pirated files complete with Chinese subtitles circulated on the Internet.

Industry insiders speculated the actors would have easily earned some tens of millions of dollars together in China without the hallyu ban.

The situation is expected to inevitably narrow the scope of activities by hallyu stars.

Hwang Ji-seon, chief of Mountain Movement that manages Park Hae-jin, said Korean entertainers need to wisely use this as an opportunity to enhance their competitiveness in the domestic market. 

"There was a bubble in the Chinese market," Hwang said. "Korean stars need to take steps to remove the bubble and increase their competitiveness."

   Hwang also raised the need to find new markets for Korean dramas, citing the instances of "Guardian" and "Legend of the Blue Sea" that broke their break even points despite the closing of the Chinese market.

Both benefited from the widening global market thanks to the popularity of global online video streaming services, she said.

"We don't see the Southeast Asian markets as being small. They are not as big as China but have high growth potential... If we have good content, we can export them at good prices."

About the access problem, I could not log in Soompi for hours once. This was around the time of KimBi couple’s wedding. It took a few hours later before I could access the site. I thought was I lost to Soompi for good, LOL, as there was not way for me to communicate with the administrator about my problem. That was the worse that I’ve experienced to date. Before, I had access problem too but only for a short while and I put them to downtime for system maintenance. The one that I experienced during KimBi couple’s wedding seemed to me more like my IP address problem. I hope that I won’t face the same problem again in the future. It’s so frustrating when there are urgent postings to be made and I can’t log in.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. 

Pictures and videos of KTH with Jason Jang aka Mr Piggy were posted in backpage. KTH and JJ attended to Sina Weibo Awards night, which was held on 15 January 2015. If you go back to this thread at that time, there were so much excitement over this because for the first time, we saw JJ who always accompany Rain for Rain’s C-activities was also assisting and accompanying KTH, just like he did for Rain. Can’t help but to think that it must be arranged through Rain.

Hi @Nancyzak, thanks for everything.  You've been so cool, reliable, sincere  . . .  never left any stone unturned when it comes to our KImBi couple.   Can't ask for more.. .. my gratitude also to @Lucia-love and @lavender2love . . . . . .  so honest and real in their postings.  I must confess that I've been a long-time Rain fan that is, since he started his showbiz career which I religiously followed  and totally supports his union with KTH.   It hurts to say that some of his so-called die-hard fans are not in favor of his marriage . . . .  we respect that  . . . . and maybe later, they will realize that what matters most is Rain's happiness.    Even at his official website,  infos about him and his activities are scarce and I hope it's only temporary.

I have stopped posting here in soompi for quite sometime but I will try to be more active.

I am glad that Rain's Japanese fansites are very supportive of his lifetime partnership with KTH and I wish his fan meetings there will be successful.

@Nancyzak,  I understand that KTH is now in Malaysia for a product promo, will Rain accompany her?   Hahah, . . .  just a wish  . . .  and I hope . . . soon . . . so that our happiness will be complete . . . .news that she is already in the family way.

First of all, welcome to this KimBi couple Soompi thread and so nice “meeting” you. I saw your and the newer postings here but I was caught up with updates at KTH's thread and the last two pages are having page loading problem. I have to edit some of my postings to solve that problem. It's still not solved as of now, but I should get there eventually. I hope to explain my delay in replying you and others here.

I thank you and am very flattered by your good opinion of me. I'm also grateful and inspired by your presence here. I certainly look forward to seeing you more here and to share with us any good news of Rain. 

Glad to know that the current tensions between China and SK has not affected Rain's showbiz and commercial activities in China. Am grateful for your sharing with us Rain's schedules for the next two months.

As for KTH and unlike Rain, she has no website for her fans to check her official schedules. Most of the times, we only know through her agency's official announcements. I heard that her C-drama, The Sage of Calligraphy, Wang Xi Zhi, is expected to air mid-2017. Keeping my fingers crossed that it will materialize as the drama was filmed in 2014. 

I'm very much aware of the situation where the relationship and union of KimBi couple is not well received by some. It's something that can't be imposed, but to some, they don't stop at that. A few went on to inflict "wounds" and to promote dislike/hate. It's very saddening. Like you, I believe that over time, trust will be built back and more will realize that it is our biases' happiness that is paramount. We have witnessed for ourselves how good and warm a reception to the wedding of KimBi couple and any news of them is warmly welcomed by so many more, be it fans from both sides and other non-fans who simply adore KimBi couple. I strongly believe KimBi couple does not let any of the negative sentiments to spoil their day or union. They look deeply happy and contented nowadays! 

By now, you would know that Rain did not go to Malaysia with KTH. KTH went with her mother and her team of staff. She had such a rousing reception at the opening of Bonia flagship boutique in Pavilion Elite Kuala Lumpur. She should realize now that there are so many fans and supporters of hers in Kuala Lumpur. I'll post some pictures, videos and news article of her at the event later, when I more or less done with my updates at KTH's thread. 

Oh, KTH on the family way now? Don't we all hope so!!! In fact some fans were so excited about this by the very fact that KTH's mother accompanied KTH to Malaysia "because of her 'delicate' condition". My thought was with Rain not going to Malaysia, it's just mother and daughter spending some quality time dining and shopping together., LOL......but the 'delicate' condition sounds a way better idea!

"Knowing Brothers" does it again! Rain, Jo Woo-jong and Han Chae-ah

 

 

JTBC "Knowing Brothers" did it again.

Han Chae-ah admitted to seeing Cha Se-jji at the press conference of the movie "Part-Time Spy". She apologized for not having talked about it with her agency first. Kang Ye-won said, "Han Chae-ah thought so much about it and she made a difficult decision".

The fact that Han Chae-ah was seeing someone came out on "Knowing Brothers" first. She seemed to have something going on with Seo Jang-hoon and Kim Yeong-cheol but then she couldn't answer when she was asked if she had a boyfriend. Mystique Entertainment explained it was just for the fun of the show but word of Han Chae-ah and Cha Se-jji got around. They claimed they were friends but she finally admitted it herself.

"Knowing Brothers" became the issue maker. Im Chang-jeong also revealed that he was seeing someone through this show. He had mentioned it before he marriage announcement but "Knowing Brothers" didn't broadcast that and waited until it was official before it released that moment as 'additional clips'.

Rain was asked a lot of questions regarding Kim Tae-hee and right after that he announced his marriage with her. Jo Woo-seung mentioned that he was seeing someone too and that was announcer Jeong Da-eun. He is getting married in March.

The reason why people are coming out with their love lives on "Knowing Brothers" is because of the friendly atmosphere. Director Choi Chang-soo says, "The members of the show make them feel at home and they also have a good feeling about someone and Kang Ho-dong is especially good at that. The people who make confessions on the show also don't ask for it to be edited or what not so we just make it flow".

Meanwhile, Han Chae-ah is coming out with the movie "Part-Time Spy" on March 16.

Did the IGier mention when the picture at Grevin Museum was taken? Anyway, no loss. Both are in Grevin Museum; only now, back to their rightful spot. Can’t have the “Just Married” hanging on top of the wax figures’ head forever. I think at Grevin Museum, the main purpose is to showcase their achievements and star status.
