[Reportage] Korean film sees new horizons in Southeast Asia

CJ capturing Indonesian audiences with remakes and original co-productions

 

 

“I love you, Kang So-ra!” “You look so pretty!”

 

On the evening of Oct. 9, Korean phrases could be heard in a theater at CGV’s Grand Indonesia branch, in Jakarta. They were being shouted by Indonesian theatergoers.

 

Korean actress Kang So-ra briefly greeted the audience from the stage and then joined them to watch the film “Bebas.”

 

Kang wasn’t a member of the “Bebas” cast, however. The film is a remake of “Sunny,” the Korean film in which Kang played the lead role. Even so, theatergoers recognized the star of the original film and gave her a warm welcome.

 

“Bebas” retains the overall narrative of the original while customizing some of the setting to Indonesia. Instead of a girls’ high school, there’s a coed high school with a male character, and the classic pop songs from the original are replaced with Indonesian hits from the 1990s.

 

Throughout the film, the theater rang with laughter and applause. Some theatergoers even danced and sang along with the final song. Kang So-ra stood up and danced right beside them.

 

“I liked the candid reactions of the audience. While seeing the Indonesian audience laughing at the same points as Korean audiences did, I found myself thinking that audiences have similar emotional responses no matter which country you’re in,” Kang said. (..)

Watch: Kang Sora And Ahn Jae Hong’s Upcoming Comedy Movie Releases Wild Teaser And Posters

 

The teaser and posters of Kang Sora and Ahn Jae Hong’s new comedy movie are finally out!

Based on the webtoon by the same name, “We Don’t Hurt You” (literal translation) will tell the story of Tae Soo, (played by Ahn Jae Hong) a lawyer who unexpectedly becomes the director of a zoo that is on the verge of being shut down, and the employees of the zoo, who pretend to be the animals that got sold and sent away.

 

In the first poster, Ahn Jae Hong, Kang Sora, Park Young Gyu, Kim Sung Oh, and Jeon Yeo Bin are coming to work while wearing their respective animal costumes under the dawn sky. Ahn Jae Hong is a polar bear, Kang Sora is a lion, Kim Sung Oh is a gorilla, Jeon Yeo Bin is a sloth, and Park Young Gyu is a giraffe.

 

The next poster shows the five characters heading home after a day’s work. Their backs are to the setting sun, and they determinedly stare ahead of them with the resolve to save the zoo no matter what. On both posters are the words, “Don’t be afraid. It’s not obvious. Walk confidently with with your fur flying about.”

 

The teaser starts off with dramatic music as a polar bear walks out. A boy throws a bottle of cola, and the polar bear actually pops it open and guzzles it down, receiving a standing ovation from the zoo guests. It is then revealed that all the animals in the zoo are actually the workers in animal costumes.

Ahn Jae Hong barks hilarious orders to the employees, such as “Please lie down! Don’t stand up!” to Kang Sora who disguises herself as a lion and “Turn off your phone!” to Jeon Yeo Bin the sloth.

One employee asks, “You want us to wear animal costumes? Are you crazy?,” and Ahn Jae Hong positively remarks, “Let’s just say I’m bold.”

 

The clip ends with Kim Sung Oh approaching Jang Seung Jo, a convenience store worker, in his gorilla costume. Jang Seung Jo, who has no idea the gorilla is actually a human, freaks out and releases a frightened scream.

 

“We Don’t Hurt You” will hit theaters in Korea on January 15, 2020.
