Two worlds collide in MBC drama ‘W’

 

From romance to comedy to suspense, it is difficult to categorize MBC’s upcoming 16-episode drama “W.” 

Featuring model-turned-actor Lee Jong-suk and actress Han Hyo-joo, “W” follows the romance that develops between a man and a woman living in two different dimensions, unknowingly “helping each other discover life’s purpose,” according to director Jung Dae-yoon at the press conference held at MBC headquarters in Sangam-dong, Seoul, Monday.

Riddled with doubts about her competence, the female protagonist Oh Yeon-joo, a doctor in her 30s played by Han, finds herself teleporting between reality and an alternate dimension, where she gets involved with the Olympic gold medalist and media mogul Kang Chul, portrayed by Lee. Created by Oh’s renowned cartoonist father, played by actor Kim Eui-sung, the fantasy world began innocently as the artist’s new project titled “W.” 

“I feel very lucky and grateful to have received (the drama’s) script,” said Han, who is returning to primetime television after a six-year hiatus. “I’ve been very drawn to this role, and often found myself treating this fantasy situation as if it were real.”

According to Jung, “W” is unprecedented and such mixed genre has never been attempted in a Korean drama. Although this may attract viewers out of curiosity, it also comes with its own set of challenges.

“We are planning on including a recap before the start of every episode,” said Jung when asked about the possibility of viewers potentially losing interest due to the constant back-and-forth between the two dimensions. “Also the actors have been great at personifying real-life emotions that people can easily empathize with. I don’t think the audience will have a big issue following the plot.”

Additionally, given the drama’s unique narrative, there is just as much focus on the show’s visual effects as the actors’ performances, both of which lead each other to produce a cohesive product, said Jung. 

However, when “W” and KBS’ internationally popular romance drama “Uncontrollably Fond” are set to air simultaneously, the new melodrama may find it harder than usual to attract and retain viewers. 

“Rather than thinking of (“Uncontrollably Fond”) as our competitor, it is our priority to focus on self-development and produce the best show we can,” said Han. 

Replacing the recently concluded series “Lucky Romance,” “W” will air on MBC every Wednesday and Thursday at 10 p.m., starting Wednesday.

Bloody first encounter between Lee Jong-suk and Han Hyo-joo

 

As anticipation rises for the official release of MBC’s new drama “W,“ Chorokbaem Media released more still shots of the first episode. If you haven‘t seen the first yet, you can check them out here. 

The drama ”W“ revolves around a fated collision of two worlds; the fictional world of the webtoon ”W“ and the real world. A romance soon follows between Kang-chul, played by Lee Jong-suk, a fictional character from the webtoon and Oh Yeon-joo, played by Han Hyo-joo, a surgeon from the real world.

The photos show Oh Yeon-joo has found an unconscious Kang-chul lying on a rooftop with an obscene amount of blood. The next set of photos show Oh Yeon-joo trying to attend to Kang-chul’s wounds.

The drama “W” is scheduled to air at 10 p.m on Wednesday.

Two celeb best friends vie for viewership

Actor Lee Jong-suk and actor Kim Woo-bin, who have been best friends since they were featured in the teen drama “School 2013,” are being pitted against one another, as they star in shows that air during the same time slots.

The upcoming MBC drama “W,” which features Lee, is slated to air every Wednesday and Thursday at 10 p.m. This overlaps with the time slot of the KBS drama “Uncontrollably Fond,” which is currently airing and stars Kim.

Lee said in a press briefing on Tuesday that he almost appeared as a cameo in Kim’s drama.

“I was about to appear as a cameo in ‘Uncontrollably Fond’ at the request of Woo-bin. However, that became impossible as the running hours for ‘W’ were finalized.”

“Woo-bin and I will continue to support each other. We are more companions than rivals,” Lee said.

“W” is a love story about a rookie female doctor (played by actress Han Hyo-joo) and the wealthy CEO (played by Lee) of Channel W, a broadcasting company.

"W" is the story of a resident doctor named Oh Yeon-joo getting sucked in the fantasy world of the web-toon"W" and meeting the character Kang Cheol.

Kang Cheol was a gold medalist for shooting when he was eighteen years old. Now he's a super rich man who even owns his own broadcasting station. However, he has a past that no one knows about. He was accused of being a murderer and was put in court.

Kang Cheol was unable to avoid the crime he was framed for and he loses it. The stills show Kang Cheol's anger about to break through the pictures.

"W" is written by Song Jae-jeong, a creative character and is directed by Jeong Dae-yoon starring Lee Jong-suk and Han Hyo-joo. The first episode can be seen on the 20th at 10PM.

LEE JONG SUK Talks About His New Drama “W”

 

 

 

LEE JONG SUK explained why he chose to join the drama show “W”.

In the afternoon of July 18, the production press conference of “W” was held at the MBC building in Sangam-dong, Seoul. LEE JONG SUK kicked off the conference by saying, “Such a good script is hard to come by.”

LEE JONG SUK plays Lee Chul, the thirty-year old co-CEO of JN Global and the owner of a broadcasting channel named W.

He went on to say, “Anyone would have wanted to do the show, if he or she read the script. I too wanted to do it as soon as I read it. It’s so exciting that I can’t wait to read the script for the next episode and I really want the shooting to go well.”

YJ: Then, you can help me?

YJ: Just help me leave here quietly.

KJ: See you next time.

YJ (at a bus station): I am hungry.

YJ: It’s ridiculous.

KC (driving up in a Ferrari): Oh Yeon Joo ssi

YJ: How can it be two months already? This is comic, right? Because it is a comic, so the time passes as needed by the story.

KC (fastening seat belt for YJ): How were you during this time?

YJ: What time, it wasn’t even 30 minutes yet…
