'Pirates' Knocks 'Roaring Currents' Out of Top Spot in Box Office

"The Pirates" has stopped the record-breaking sweep of "Roaring Currents" to belatedly top the box office three weeks after its release on Aug. 7. Given that a movie's box-office rankings usually decrease with time, the unusual achievement of "The Pirates" raises expectations of how far it can chase "Roaring Currents."

As of Tuesday, the former drew 6.05 million viewers, while the latter became the most successful Korean film of all time with 16.35 million viewers, since its release on July 30.

"The Pirates" has continued to attract moviegoers at a steady pace, hitting the 1 million mark on its fourth day and the 4 million mark on its 12th day.

It will likely maintain its momentum as no other blockbusters, except for the "Ninja Turtles," are set to be released ahead of Chuseok, or Korean Thanksgiving.

It remains to be seen whether Korean films will continue to sweep the box office during one of the nation's biggest holidays from Sept. 9-10. Next week, two Korean movies -- "My Brilliant Life" starring Kang Dong-won and Song Hye-kyo and a sequel to the gambling flick "The War of Flower" -- will hit cinemas. Luc Besson's latest film "Lucy" starring Choi Min-sik and Scarlett Johansson will also be released.

The movie “Pirates” has grit. It”s been on top of the Box Office for 5 days in a row. According to the Korean Film Council, “Pirates” gathered a total of 6,180,075 figures until today. It beat “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” on the 22nd and has been on top ever since.

“Pirates” is a comic action flick about a group of pirates who search for a seal that disappeared with the attack of a whale. Word about the movie has traveled fast and there”s a constant flow of audiences arriving to watch the movie.

“The Admiral: Roaring Currents” has slowed down a little. It”s come to second place with 89,438 on the 26th.

'The Pirates' Reclaim Top Place In Box Office Local blockbuster 'The Pirates' has reclaimed its top spot at the box office over the weekend after having given up its lead to the Hollywood disaster film 'Into the Storm' for three days. According to the Korean Film Council, the movie starring Kim Nam-gil and Son Ye-jin topped the daily box office chart yesterday drawing over 6.8 million viewers as of this morning. 'Into the Storm' came in second attracting over 477,000 moviegoers since its release, while 'Roaring Currents' was placed third amassing 16.8 million admissions so far.
