Man Just as there are 2 minutes of my favorite couple in each episode, there's none next week. DAMN!!!!!!!! Nam Sang Mi looks really pretty. Thank god she finally let her hair down. I see why HO Sub is love struck. lolz I really love the expression on his face when he saw her.. lolz I would love if there is another love rival. It would make this pairing so much more fun.

I'm glad that the Japanese girlfriend is not as naggy and clingy as i thought she would be. But since she knows now she might be the source that leeks out his secret. There seems to be romantic connection with that woman she knows and the uncle. Trouble ..trouble...

The little sister character played by Nam Gyu Ri is really cute. I love how she does her hair. They dress her up really beautiful too. For some reason i find her character annoying. I think it's her voice that's getting to me.

[iNTERVIEW] Actor Song Chang-eui - Part 1

"I don't think I was not popular," Song said when asked how popular he had been since he had acted starting from his high school days in plays, but instead of a modest answer from him; he jokingly smiled and claimed it was true. The child who was "quiet yet played with others but at the same time was kind of scholarly" has stood on many stages and in front of numerous cameras, attracting the attention of others to gain the nickname of a 'refined playboy.' Currently, he stars in SBS drama "Beautiful Life" as Yang Tae-sup, a homosexual physician. 10Asia met with actor Song Chang-eui and below are the excerpts from his interview.

10: Since taking on your role in "Beautiful Life" you have been getting many compliments on how 'pure and innocent' you look. What is your secret? (laugh)

Song Chang-eui (Song): Really? I didn't know. (laugh) I lost some weight after deciding to take this role. I don't know if this applies to everyone but most homosexual people care about their looks, so I worked out a bit and my clothes were chosen by my stylist.

10: Recently, your character Tae-sup garnered a lot of attention after coming out to his ex-girlfriend Chae-young (played by Yoo-min). What did you feel?

Song: I was worried about viewers' reaction to my acting because playing the part of a homosexual in a drama isn't an easy thing to do. But I was amazed with how well they accepted it, thanks to the scenarist and director who did a great job in relaying the storyline, and also I realized that our society has changed a lot over the past several years. I think they have come to accept it in a cool way where they think 'it’s possible.'

10: What came to mind when you first received the offer for the role of Tae-sup?

Song: Director Jung Eul-young offered me the role and at the same time explaining that my character would be a homosexual. I had many thoughts about the role but the first thought that came to mind was, 'Why did they create this character?' then, 'Will I be able to pull this off?' and finally, 'Is it right to play this role?' However, I thought about how not many actors could pull off this role and decided to play the role thinking it will be an unforgettable production.

10: I think you must've felt a different type of pressure taking on the role even though you had played the role of a transgender before through the musical "Hedwig And The Angry Inch?”

Song: Yes, Hedwig is completely different from Tae-sup. Hedwig is such a strong character, his life is full of ups and downs and one-of-a-kind, while Tae-sup is just a regular guy who is normal except that he likes men, so instead of 'normal' he fits the category of 'not-the-typical' person in our society.

10: If that is the case, how did you go about approaching your character Tae-sup?

Song: The first thing I think about when portraying a character is to think about how he usually thinks. In the case of Tae-sup, unlike how he seems on the outside, he has a complex and grotesque concern. I thought that Tae-sup is someone who grew up trapped alone in a world of his own after his parents got divorced and wondered, 'Is my new mom taking care of me because she really loves me?' after his father remarried, no matter how good his stepmom is to him. On top of that, he was having a hard time because he felt that he couldn't get along with other people because of his sexual inclination but becomes happy after meeting Kyung-soo.

10: So is that why Tae-sup is somewhat stiff when he is around his family but comfortable and brightens up when he is with his boyfriend Kyung-soo (played by Lee Sang-woo)?

Song: That is because Kyung-soo is sort of a releasing channel for Tae-sup. It's not like Tae-sup has set up a wall against his family but it is difficult for him to mingle with them completely because of his secret, while on the other hand, he can be himself completely in front of Kyung-soo. If it wasn't for Kyung-soo, Tae-sup will probably be a wreck. But Tae-sup is slowly beginning to reach out to his family after Kyung-soo starts visiting his house. He is constantly happy, he'll act coquettishly to his mom and even help clean the bathroom. It shows that he is one shrewd guy. (laugh)

10: When scenarist Kim Soo-hyun gave the role of Tae-sup and Kyung-soo to you and Lee, I heard that all she asked for was you two to love each other. So this isn't an issue of technique but fundamental interpretation. What was your understanding of her remark?

Song: I think what she was trying to say is was not to love in the way a man loves a woman but how a person loves another person. If I loved someone, I wouldn't feel uncomfortable being in the same space as that person, I would look at that person's eyes easily, and naturally feel that I want us to spend more time together. The most important part of the role was trying to relay that naturally. Regardless of whether it is a gay or straight relationship, when the two look beautiful together, those who see them will feel, "They are really in love and it is sad to see them having a hard time."

10: Have you become close with your partner Lee Sang-woo? I saw a picture of the two of you on your mini homepage.

Song: I tried hard to become close with him quickly. Of course we spend many hours on set for the shoot but in order to become friends quickly, we go drinking together, to the sauna and also work-out at the same gym. Whenever we have free time we would play catch or swim.

10: Most of the shooting for "Beautiful Life" takes place in its backdrop Jeju Island. This is rare occurence for dramas.

Song: We'll rotate between shooting the drama on Jeju Island for about ten days and then about four to five days in Seoul. Going back and forth between Seoul to Jeju is hard both physically and mentally because the weather in Jeju changes often. But as time goes by, I've begun to adjust to the situation and enjoy spending time at Jeju now because it is such a beautiful place. When the actors are shooting in Seoul, all of the cast members don’t spend much time together because of their busy schedules but in Jeju we spent a lot of time together and gather to eat. I think it's a good experience because I don't think I will have another chance to work on a drama with this kind of system.

10: How did it feel working in an environment where scenarist Kim is popular for continuously attending script readings?

Song: I was really nervous at the first script reading. I thought it would be organized and solemn to suit the name 'Kim.Soo.Hyun.' However, scenarist Kim treated all the actors like her own children including Yoon Da-hoon and Kim Sang-joong who she had worked with before in the series "Sauna Boys." You could feel that even from the script because she refers to the characters as 'child.' For example, in the case of Tae-sup and Kyung-soo, she would write "the two children walk up." And from what I've heard from someone else, she will ask about what physical and mental state in mind her actors are. When it comes to acting, she doesn't engage in pointing out an actor's acting down to every little detail but focuses her explanation more on the character's thoughts and intentions. The rest is up to me.

10: Which scenes make you think that most when you're reading the script?

Song: In all the scenes where the topic of homosexuality appears. It makes me think a lot rather than being difficult. It was like that in the scene where I say "I felt like walking down the hallway of the hospital with a megaphone and shouting out I am gay," and also about how far I should go in terms of physical contact. When you see two guys together, they can seem like two friends in a way but I wonder how far I should go to make us seem like lovers while also trying not to let things go too far. Sang-woo and I shared similar thoughts on this and we are adjusting how we should go about this.

[iNTERVIEW] Actor Song Chang-eui - Part 2

Actor Song Chang-eui [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]

10: Tae-sup is a very quiet character. He isn't loud and doesn't say what is unnecessary but it's impressive to see how you depict his emotions so delicately through your eyes or expressions.

Song Chang-eui: I think a lot about the situation that is laid out in the script and why that situation is occuring. For example, when Tae-sup becomes flustered running into his uncle after he parts with Kyung-soo in front of his house but hears that his grandfather had been sick, I have to instinctively act surprised. When he is with his mother, he'll clash and get angry with her but suddenly smile for her too, and sometimes he will just brush past Ho-sup (played by Lee Sang-yoon) but also quarrel with him. It's important to show the subtle changes a character's emotions undergo depending on who he or she is with and under what circumstances, but I think it's even more so in the case of Tae-sup. It might not be caught on camera that well sometimes because the changes are so subtle, but it's fun expressing those details.

10: Tae-sup keeps a distance from his family but all of a sudden, will also quite subtly, act childish. I think he would have to have a certain amount of trust [in his family] to take on such an attitude.

Song: There's a scene where his family keeps telling him to get married, so he gets up to walk out, saying, "I give up on eating." Then his mom will hush everyone, telling Tae-sup to sit down and finish eating. So from these scenes it seems that Tae-sup can act like that because he knows how much his family trusts and cares about him.

10: You had worked with Lee Sang-yoon before, in SBS TV series "The Scale of Providence." He seemed to be a big fan of yours, having said in a previous interview that the reason he took on "Beautiful Life" was because it was by Kim Soo-hyun, he would get to shoot on location on Jeju island, and since you would be in it too.

Song: I don't know why he would say such thing... (laugh) There's no way he decided to do the drama because of me. We both don't have brothers in our family and our teamwork in "The Scale of Providence" was great so I think that relationship has continued on. He is someone who is born with some great traits. The scenes where we goof off in the drama are actually close to how we act in real life.

10: The conflicts surrounding "Beautiful Life" are expected to heighten. What will happen?

Song: Kim Soo-hyun has often touched on issues regarding the social weak in her previous works and by doing so in this drama too, about homosexuals, I think she is telling viewers to think about the fact that there may be such people in their very own homes too. Tae-sup and Kyung-soo are not outcasts but members of families, yet even these people are not able to tell their parents about their identity, so I think it'll be worth giving this a thought too. That's why I think the moment they are accepted as who they are by their families, however difficult that process may be, that will be when positive change occurs in our society too.

10: You had played characters with relatively constrained personalities in dramas "The Golden Bride," "Cinderella Man," and are doing so again now in "Beautiful Life," but you showed a completely different side to you through musical "Hedwig."

Song: That's why there were people who said they were surprised after seeing me in "Hedwig." I think all forms of performances are great but I think there are few like "Hedwig" where you can just let go and give everything you've got. I don't think a man dressing as a woman and acting as a transgender makes them look like a fool. I enjoy being in the situation where everyone is looking at me, I can open up myself completely and make the audience laugh and cry. They have the ability to absorb however much energy I let out so I used to feel bad if I thought I hadn't done enough. And then when I'm singing the last song "Midnight Radio," I'd go easy, telling myself that I've been sprinting up till then so I should take a break. When the encore performances starts, that's when both the audience and I just go crazy. The moment the drums start rolling, so do we.

Actor Song Chang-eui [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]

10: It seems you have a special kind of affection for theater which seems to come from your experience of being part of drama club in high school. How were your college days as an acting major?

Song: I was someone who had fun. The moment I got into college. I was sure I would engage in plays actively but I was also under the strong conviction that I would enjoy my college life. That's why I drank, missed out on several classes and dated girls. At the same time I didn't miss out on theater production classes but when it comes to college life, friends and drinking is pretty much it. (laugh) I think it might be a tradition which exists only for our major, but we'd rehearse for our plays all night, then stay out and drink since we're tired, but have to go to school in the morning so we'd sleep in the library. Then the girls in our major, who had slept at home, would buy us food. We lived like beggars. (laugh) I think I gathered my senses after I finished serving my mandatory military service.

10: Changing isn't about aging. In what ways do you think you changed?

Song: There's a saying that actors shouldn't mature but I think that's when I started thinking seriously about my attitude toward acting and took a real interest in musicals. And in the midst of that, I got the leading role for musical "West Side Story." I wondered whether I had gotten the part more for my looks than my singing skills (laugh) and I could tell that the other students felt bitter about it, thinking 'All he did is play. How did he get the part?' And I couldn't pull off the high notes in "Maria" so I practiced a lot for that. I kept doing musicals after that because my seniors asked me to audition for their productions.

10: That led to your drama appearances, then film roles and finally theater. You move quite freely between the different spheres of acting but I'm sure it wasn't an easy career to build on.

Song: I think I do everything although I'm not great at any single thing. (laugh) All I have ever tried doing is acting, no, rather than that, acting is fun in itself and I want to take on good roles so that's how I've ended up where I am. People sometimes ask me why I do theater when I'm doing well on TV. They tell me I should try to increase my popularity and become famous. They may be right but when I get offered a role on stage, I'll just do it if I think it'll be fun and if I want to stand in front of the audience.

10: But since you're an actor, it must be inevitable that you become stressed over worrying whether you'll be given role offers or the fluctuations your career goes through.

Song: Not really. I can't think that I'll constantly be given opportunities to act. I think I should keep looking and try to feel more and learn more rather than feel insecure about falling from where I am right now. That's why I just have fun with my job rather than be worried.

10: I heard you're a baseball mania. How are things -- it's baseball season right now.

Song: I'm dying. (laugh) I'm the pitcher for a team I made with some celebrities including Lee Jong-soo, Han Sang-jin, Kim Kang-woo, Ji-sung and Park Gun-hyung. We usually play once a week but I haven't been able to play recently because I'm always on Jeju island now. I was originally an LG fan but since I do baseball too now, I try to look at the strengths and weaknesses of each team rather than root for a single team.

10: How good are you?

Song: They just say I'm the ace. I didn't mention it first. (laugh) I think my fastest pitch was... about 120 kilometers per hour. Oh, it's not like I've had it measured before but people have told me it'll be around that... My coach has been telling me that there'll be some damage to my pitching though since I've been missing out on the games. (laugh)

10: Right now it seems you're the ace of "Beautiful Life." (laugh) What is the single value that you have held onto till now and would want to continue to have throughout your acting career?

Song: I hope I don't lose the feeling that I want to 'keep acting.' I feel extremely happy and blessed to be living as an actor so I hope it never becomes tough or tiring. I want to live as an actor who continues to know how to have fun on stage and enjoy people's attention and criticism, whether it be good or bad. It's like that with "Beautiful Life" in particular. There are people who enjoy it and some who are still more reluctant to accept the topic of homosexuality but I think I should be thankful for all the attention since I believe that is what helps me improve on my acting.
