Hm...well I think I'm in a bit of a situation >_<

So yesterday I got hired at this new store in Waikiki (tamago86: you were probably there when you came to visit XD) and they're expecting a lot of Japanese people to be coming through the store. I'm not quite sure what to expect and my Japanese comprehension isn't that great

Anyone have any useful vocab/phrases used a lot in retail? The store sells tropical high-end cookies and dried fruits and teas. Like "this product is really popular" or "would you like to try a sample?"

I originally took the job because they were looking for Japanese speaking ppl, and I thought it might be good 'practice', but my communication skills (esp. in Japanese) are horrible T_T

I think orangecake did a splendid job, so the only other phrase that I can think of is

これは　　如何ですか？

korewa ikaga desuka?

(would you like to have/take this [one])?

But if you needed translation help on what orangecake wrote (cos some of the phrases are item specific and so on) just reply back and we'll be sure to help you out!

Can someone translate this?

I can understand it for the most part, but I don't understand what the iebaiika is suppose to be. My friend's writing is a bit incoherent.

This is from my limited experience in cashier work:

Cash = 現金＝Genkin

For check, I think it depends on what kind of check it is..

For personal checks, it's パーソナルチェック (paasonaruchekku)

and for traveler's checks it's トラベラーチェック (toraberaachekku).

Credit Card = クレジットカード = Kurejittokaado

And for giving change..

So you know you say.. the total followed by either いただきます or　になります or でございます. Then you state the amount you have been given followed by either おあずかりします or おあずかりです. Then when you finally give them their change, you state the amount you're giving back followed by either のかえしになります or のおかえしです or のおつりです.

So here's an example of the payment situation:

Let's say the customer is buying something for $6 (I'm using USD).

会計：６ドルいただきます。

客：はい。（Gives ＄１０)

会計：１０ドルおあずかりします。

会計：４ドルのおかえしになります。

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure I am not. :-D

i mean think about it, even with songs in english (my native lang) i mess up the lyrics cuz i can't clearly hear them....

Thanks but it's not a song. It's just a very short phrase, and it wouldn't be easier if I romanized it because she is speaking too fast for me to type it out. I can only get "Tamare! konokatkitsu" ..blah blah and even so I'm positive I made a mistake there.

hehe while we're at it, is there anyone who's well schooled in the Osaka-ben to teach me what are the major differences to standard Japanese? Its not just a matter of accents right? I distinctly remember someone telling me there's a way to conjugate stuff in a different way or something....
