Should it be legalized???
I don't know if there is the right place to put, but anyways, how do your Soompiers feel about marijuana being legalized here in California? Do you think it would be a great idea to raise tax money?

Bad? Yes. Legalize it? Yes. Have I ever had a joint? No

Marijuana abusers (and some casual users) are only hurting themselves, so why send them to prison for a crime of self-abuse? Makes no sense to me. As long as I'm not being forced to smoke marijuana by law and society then I have no problem with other people getting as high as possible under their own discretion.

well...

it all comes down to this: everyone has their decisions in life about everything. Using marijuana knowing it's bad for the body is certainly up to the individual.

as for legalization, I don't agree with it but there are also those that will. it goes both ways.

The government is never going to legalize marijuana. Why? Because they want to keep the prices high so they can gain more profit. If the government legalizes marijuana, the price will drop, competition will rise, and the government won't be able to get drugs using their law since it'd be legal. therefore the government won't make money off of it.

WHAT?! The government sells drugs? You don't expect them to just burn all the drugs they confiscate do you? I'd expect the government to do anything to make extra cash, the US Government is broke. This is my theory. The Government wouldn't have the money to "fight terrorism" if it wasn't for the money they receive through the back door. The government wastes billions and billions of dollars on military supplies that are thrown away and replaced continuously. Our tax money can't even cover the cost for all this. The "big brothers" will use the government to it's own power for their own benefits, and I think they're using the Government for drugs just like they're using the Government to get oil from the Middle East through their "fight against terrorism."

Nice conspiracy theory you have there, buddy. Only problem is, the government can profit much more if they legalize marijuana though.

either you legalize marijuana or you ban alcohol because i think both have the same effect.

I don't agree with alcohol and marijuana having the same effect, but it should be legalize and "sin" taxed to hell. I don't want to get high on your second hand smoke, though.

Taxing cigarettes and alcohol is smart because it's addicting and has a wider population smoking and drinking it, but marijuana? i doubt the profit from taxing marijuana will be that high. The cost for marijuana will decrease, but will the demand for marijuana increase once it's legalized? Marijuana can be grown anywhere since it's just a plant. If I was dealing and buying drugs, i'd want to buy it illegally to avoid tax. If I stood my ground with my theory, there wont be a higher profit by legalizing marijuana. I'm sure the government confiscates a good share of drugs and money off of drug lords and small dealers right now. If the government has a "monopoly" in the drug industry with their laws, i'd expect them to make a lot more money rather than spreading the competition around by legalizing it.

id rather the u.s/California start growing its own hemp. major cash crop right there so many uses that this country refuses to accept because it will cut down profits on other products like paper/cotton. although marijuana is also a cash crop, but i would say hemp is less controversial. I just had a debate about this in one of my classes too. the side that wanted to legalize marijuana won. lol.

This.

I know a lot of people that already buy from those marijuana clinics so I don't see why anyone would go out and buy it from someone else just because it doesn't get taxed. Unless they sold it for like $100 and you can get it for like $50 illegally I can see why that'd happen but either way i'm sure people would still buy it legally.

I think they should legalize it but put restrictions on it like they do with alcohol. I personally hate the smell of the stuff and hate being around people that are under the effects of it even more.

I think that they should legalize it and tax the poop out of it.

Also, if they legalize it the prison overcrowding would go down in size because many of the inmates were sentenced to prison because of the using or selling of marijuana. With the growing number of prisoners, the more money it costs to fund for them due to building new prisons and what not. Therefore, if they legalize marijuana then taxpayers would be spending less money on prisons and maybe the money would go more to education? (Federal prisons have more funding than education).

Yeah, IDK if that makes sense haha

i think it should be legalized.

it's actually not that bad, i mean people say that you can get addicted, but that's true for lots of things that are legal (ie, drinking, smoking, porn etc).

and besides that, i think it would give some people more jobs.

I don't do drugs but I'm pretty much impartial to this issue

I do believe that illicit drugs such as marijuana should be legalized because it would lower the crime rate.

I read in an article that drug abusers (that probably include marijuana users) are most likely to be involved in crimes.

The reason why there is a huge demand for marijuana is because its illegal.

People tend to want things that they can't get.

This also pertains to underage drinking.

Besides, if marijuana were to be legalized, it would be a good idea to raise the tax high in order to stimulate the economy.

The reason why I don't want it legalized because I don't like people using drugs. I don't want to walk down the street and see people smoking marijuana in place of a cigarette.

That's just my opinion.

I've tried it, it doesn't seem to be addictive or too harmful. I really don't know the heath hazards. I mean, it gets you feelings good, and usually people have longer attention spans, but if you're taking stronger stuff, it'll screw with you. So it all depends how people use it.

Yes they should. It would help out the economy if they tax the living balls out of it. Also, many of the inmates in the prison systems are in there for marijuana related incidents, if we legalize marijuana, and release them, our tax money wouldn't have to go to the inmates' care. Whats so bad about weed? All it does it make you happy, hungry, and tired...

Marijuana needs to be legalized ASAP. I hope they dont tax it as much as cigarettes but as long as it becomes legal I'm fine with taxes.

yea, its not necessarily as addictive as cigarettes or alcohol nor as harmful. but the effects are usually like short term memory loss and prob. eventual dependence on it. and recent studies show it increases the risk of getting testicular cancer, so gents. better cut back on the puff puffin if u are over doing it. lol
