melusine
3/13/09 - SoYi was at the VIP premiere of the musical "Attack the Gas Station!" based on the same-titled 1999 film. (not pictured): Director Kim YongGyoon (Like Fireworks, Like Butterflies), saxophone musician Danny Jung, Miss Korea Seoul 2008 Jang YoonHee. What's cool is that the original main cast of the movie (which was crazy anarchic fun ) all showed up to support the musical and celebrate the 10th year anniversary of their film. (Their director Kim SangJin could not attend due to personal reasons, so he just sent a congratulatory wreath.) Original cast of the movie (L-R): Lee SungJae, Yoo JiTae, Yoo OhSung, Kang SungJin. "Attack the Gas Station!" movie poster 3 'Movicals' to Face Off in March Source: KBS World 2009-02-17 Many musicals based on films have been staged in the past few years, leading to the coining of the new term "movical." [Video|DL] credit as labelled In her interviews, designer Cho SungKyong said she chose SoYi because her "strong and intelligent, yet soft and feminine" image embodies the collection's theme of 1930s retro romantic fashion ('vivid 30s'). She also praised SoYi's professionalism, saying that usually when stars are invited to model, they only rehearse the day before the show; but SoYi and fellow actor Kim JiSeok (Likeable or Not, Take Off) practiced on the runway for an entire week. As for SoYi--who's been back studying hard at Dongguk University (she's a third-year Theater/Film major) since Glass Castle ended--she is "happy and excited" to go back to her modelling roots. She and fellow JTS regulars Han JiMin, Bae JongOk, Kim YeoJin, writer Noh HeeKyung and director Han JiSeung were joined by Seo Hyorim, Choi Daniel, Kim YoungKwang, Jeon YeSeo, model 시호 and Kim ByeongJo, as well as theater volunteer group Gilbut (길벗). They signed postcards and asked passersby for monetary contributions, while Jang Kiha and the Faces gave a free, live performance (on the Myeongdong Festival stage in front of Woori Bank). The funds collected will go to Third World countries in need of aid, with special focus on Dhungeshwari, India (where JTS has established a school - Sujata Academy) and Mindanao, Philippines -- places where there is chronic malnutrition, disease and illiteracy. To achieve JTS's humanitarian aims, street campaigns like this will be conducted nationwide until December 19 to raise awareness and encourage participation by keeping piggybanks. JTS, an international relief organization, is applying for special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council. melusine
http://www.chtvn.com/VR/taxi/ [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNS24ZGBZVc] Pls correct me for any errors in translation. YSY guested on the cable program tvN '택시' (Taxi) which aired on June 25 at 12mn. Driving around and giving a walking tour of her school Dongguk University, SoYi was surprisingly frank about her painful family history and the difficult early days of her career. Her father left her mother for another woman 100 days before SoYi was born, so she has never seen him face-to-face. Also, her deadbeat dad never gave any child support (which SoYi considers a discriminatory aspect of divorce in Korea), so her mom worked hard to raise SoYi and her brother alone by doing countless jobs. When she was little SoYi didn't understand this and felt disappointed that her mom was always busy (she feels sorry to her mom now that she felt this way). But she was really happy whenever it rained because it meant that her mom would get to rest and stay home with them. Until now, rainy days remind her of her mom (she burst into tears at this point in the interview, that even LYJ started crying too ). 7~8 years ago she got rejected at 100 auditions, and there was one audition where the PD (or casting director) didn't even give her the chance to speak the first word of the script, saying she didn't have the 'right look.' Several years later when she started getting CF and drama offers, she got a call from that same director, telling her "Let's work together." SoYi laughed that he didn't even remember her. Since then she's vowed never to forget the past, and to never take her present career for granted. When she debuted in 1985, lots of showbiz people told her (a high school senior at the time) to get her square jaw and square chin fixed, to the extent that she went for a plastic surgery consultation. Though she ended up not going through with it (mostly because she couldn't afford the 5 million won price tag), she's always had an insecurity complex about those features. But at the "Goodbye Solo" production press conference, writer Noh HeeKyung praised her, saying, "Just concentrate on acting, face the future with confidence, and keep your chin." ( and aww~) 'Taxi' is hosted by Lee YoungJa and Gong HyungJin. melusine
Angel's Temptation continues the makjang tradition August 22nd, 2009 // by javabeans Did you like SBS's ratings monster of a drama, the quintessential "makjang" series Wife's Temptation? Because coming soon to SBS Mondays and Tuesdays is a drama by the same writer, Kim Soon-ok, called Angel's Temptation [천사의 유혹], and it sounds like the (narrative) craziness is back in full force. Furthermore, directing is First Wives' Club's PD Sohn Jung-hyun. Both First Wives' Club and Wife's Temptation were two very popular series that aired in 2008 and 2009 that broke the 40% ratings mark and were often buzzed about (and criticized) for their "makjang" plots -- outrageous storylines involving adultery, revenge, rape, deception and the like, designed to keep viewers hooked no matter how ridiculous the stories became. Angel's Temptation has cast Yoon Soyi (Goodbye Solo, City of Glass) as its lead -- I presume she's the "angel" of the title, but the word sounds like it's applied ironically, because she's described as a femme fatale on a revenge mission. After her parents are killed and her family ruined, Yoon's character vows to punish the ones responsible, and therefore seduces and marries the son of her enemy. This will be a complete change for Yoon, who has hitherto played mostly good, innocent characters. Currently, Angel's Temptation has completed the first four scripts. It will air after Dream and premieres October 12. I've seen dramas with makjang elements (Boys Before Flowers and East of Eden are examples), but I've never been drawn to the genre itself. But as this is a Monday-Tuesday series and not a daily (like Wife's Temptation) or long-running weekend (First Wives' Club), I might check it out. Via Hankyung Ohnoes... UGH. Guest jjowah
i love her! she's really young but dosnt let herself get typecast in huge blockbuster roles or typical chic flicks. her acting shines and i wish she'd get more credit for it! i was surprised to hear about her hard childhood but it shows through her mature acting. i really loved all her dramas.and commend her for picking material with substance and not going through the sexy or teenage idol route. dramaluv3r101
Yoon So-yi pinch-hits for Hero as new leading lady [2009-Nov-03] credits Dramabeans MBC has tapped Yoon So-yi to be the last-minute replacement for Kim Min-jung in Hero after the latter was forced to drop out a week before the drama’s scheduled premiere. This has thrown the Hero production for a loop, since all previously shot scenes will have to be redone, and they have so little time remaining in which to throw everything together. (Kim Min-jung had filmed the first two episodes before she had to take a break to heal. Overall filming slowed while waiting for her recovery, but Lee Junki has filmed Episodes 3 and 4.) for the rest of the article refer to Dramabeans' blog: http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/11/yoon-soy...w-leading-lady/
melusine
^thanks dramaluv3r101 Though I like SoYi, Kim MinJung is obviously the much better actress between the two so I understand the concern and loss of interest by Javabeans and most of her commenters. SoYi is not the greatest nor the most vivacious actress, but given good material she can be pretty solid, lending her characters a maturity and a coltish sort of grace (which made her perfect for Goodbye Solo--imo her best work). But in recent years SoYi has been picking wrong projects, and while Hero sounds promising, I'm skeptical if it's the right fit for her given the character description of 'spunky'. She does strong-but-NOT-cutesy well (see Arahan and Shadowless Sword), which made her hopelessly miscast as Auction House's Perky Hapless Heroine--so it all depends on their definition of the word. Not to mention its production troubles don't bode well for the drama's quality (and neither does her lack of preparation). Still, I'd take this over a makjang any day (plus Baek YoonShik is in it!! and Uhm KiJoon! did I already say Baek YoonShik?!!), so I guess there's nothing to do but wait and see.
