LA County museum to feature Hong

Korean arthouse director gets September spotlight

By Park Soo-mee

SEOUL -- A series of films by arthouse director Hong Sang-soo will be featured at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art starting September 11 - 19, supported by the Korean Film Council.

“Cigarettes and Alcohol: Eight Films by Hong Sang-soo” presents the director’s feature films, including his earlier works such as “The Day a Pig Fell Into the Well” and “Power of Gangwon Province.”

The retrospective will be held in conjunction with the museum’s current display of contemporary Korean artists “Your Bright Future: 12 Contemporary Artists from Korea." The screening begins with Hong's latest film “Like You Know it All,” poignantly depicting the life of a local arthouse film director.

“His plots have the precision and sly wit of Rohmer, the attentive gaze of Ozu, the pervasive alienation of Antonioni, and mordant flourishes worthy of Buñuel,” the museum's Web site said, described Hong.

The LA museum hosted a retrospective of the director Lee Chang-dong last year.

L.A. museum to screen works of Hong Sang-soo

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art will look back on the works of acclaimed South Korean director Hong Sang-soo later this month, the Korea Film Council said Wednesday.

Eight of Hong's films, including "Like You Know It All (2008)," "The Day a Pig Fell into the Well (1996)," "Woman on the Beach (2006)" and "Woman is the Future of Man (2004)," will be screened during a retrospective program at the gallery from Sept. 11-19, the council said in a press release.

According to Yonhap News, the museum held a retrospective on veteran Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong last year.

Hong, who won two international honors with his debut "The Day a Pig Fell into the Well," is considered one of the most widely recognized South Korean directors in the global film society.

Acclaimed director Hong Sang Soo muses about what he knows best - the emotional, social, and intellectual life of an arthouse filmmaker - in his remarkable ninth feature Like You Know It All. Screened at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival's Directors' Fortnight, Like You Know It All stars Hong Sang Soo regular Kim Tae Woo (Women on the Beach, Woman is the Future of Man) as a critics' darling filmmaker who is often drunk and confused as his work brings him across the country, and into contact with faces from the past. Hong's characteristic episodic narrative and elliptical reflection provide the brooding framework for a bitingly funny send-up of filmmakers, festivals, and the people and places in between. Many top stars show up in supporting roles including Ko Hyun Jung from Women on the Beach and Uhm Ji Won from Tale of Cinema, as well as Kong Hyung Jin, Jung Yoo Mi, Seo Young Hwa, and Ha Jung Woo.

Arthouse filmmaker Ku (Kim Tae Woo) can't seem to direct a hit, but at least the critics love him. He goes to Jecheon to judge the local film festival, but the common practice for jurors is to schmooze by day, drink at night, and sleep through movies. He bumps into an old friend (Kong Hyung Jin) in town and drinks till he passes out, but not before soundly offending his friend's wife (Jung Yoo Mi). After Jecheon, Ku heads to Jeju to give a college lecture. There he meets up with a former mentor, who it turns out is now married to Ku's college sweetheart (Ko Hyun Jung).

Hong Sang-Soo’s wry, comic accounts of the sex-war seem less rigidly structured than they used to, but there’s still a keen analytical intelligence at work not far below the surface. Art-house director Ku Kyung-Nam is doing jury service at a small festival when he runs into his long-lost buddy Bu, now happily married and living locally. Ku visits his friend’s home for dinner and gets very drunk on soju. Next day he’s surprised to get a message from Bu telling him to get lost; apparently he behaved badly towards Bu’s wife. A fortnight later Ku is in Jeju Island to give a talk when he meets his college senior, now a famous painter--who turns out to be married to a woman Ku himself once dated and abandoned. Two parallel situations, but generating different emotions and with very different outcomes. The wild card in play is Ms Gong, programmer of the film festival, who has to look after Ku but has at best ambivalent feelings about him and his work. Spoken words and unspoken sentiments ricochet through a series of exquisitely embarrassing situations; female uncertainty meets male inadequacy and there’s nowhere to hide.

Invited to serve on the jury at a film festival, Director Ku does not care about his supposed-to-dos. Rather, chatting at parties and drinking now seem to be his all time favorites. Ku runs into an old friend who insists he come over for dinner. Ku stays the night at his friend's house. Yet, the next day, Ku finds himself in trouble with an alleged accusation of seducing his friend's wife. Later, Ku travels to Jeju Island to give a lecture. He hooks up with a painter for another long night of drinking. The day after, Ku is invited to the painter's where he happens to see his ex-girlfriend.

[Like You Know It All] is Hong Sangsoo's variation of difference and repetition arising from coming and going between film festivals and Jeju Island. The differences revealed within the repetition convey a vague impression of repetitious emotions. (LEE Sang-yong)

Meet Directors in Seoul Theaters

By Lee Hyo-won, Korea Times

01-13-2010 16:20

kofa10012m.jpg

This weekend in Seoul, movie buffs can re-watch a handful of contemporary classics of Korean cinema on the big screen and meet directors: Hong Sang-soo and Song Il-gon.

The Korean Film Archive is hosting a retrospective of 10 films by the minimal realist Hong through Jan. 24 at Cinematheque KOFA, Sangam-dong, Seoul, while "The Magicians," by artsy experimentalist Song, will reopen Sunday in Daehango.

Hong has established an international reputation as a unique minimalist with video journal-style movies reminiscent of the late Eric Rohmer. The retrospective lineup includes his 1996 directorial debut piece, "The Day the Pig Fell Into the Well," to his latest works ― "Like You Know It All" and the short "Lost in the Mountains."

Following Sunday's 4:30 p.m. screening of "Night and Day," which competed at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival, Hong will join the audience. He will give a special talk with film critic Huh Moon-young, director of Cinematheque Busan, who produced "Night and Day."

Two of 10 films will be shown with English subtitles: "Turning Gate" (2 p.m., Jan. 16; 5 p.m., Jan. 21) and "Woman Is the Future of Man" (8 p.m., Jan. 19; 5 p.m., Jan. 23).

Admissions to all screenings and events are free of charge. Cinematheque KOFA (www.koreafilm.or.kr) is located near exit 2 of Digital Media City Station on subway line 6. Take bus No. 7711 or 7730 to Nuriggum (Nuri Dream) Square.

101113_p14_a2.jpg

A digitally re-mastered version of Song Il-gon's 2006 film "The Magicians" will be screened beginning Sunday at Changjo Art Hall, Daehangno.

While traveling the international film festival circuit, from Busan and Jeonju to Locarno, Italy and New York, "The Magicians" has received rave reviews from critics and general audiences alike. It was also noted as the first digitally distributed film via CGV Theaters.

The film has also made headlines as a single-take film, its entire 96-minute running time having been filmed in one take, one cut. Featuring strong theatrical and musical aspects, including tango tunes and indie rock music, "The Magicians" was produced into a musical franchise last October and is currently being staged at the same venue. It will be a great chance to compare the two versions.

The psychodrama feeds on Song's trademark themes of healing and redemption, as it captures a New Year's Eve reunion of three old friends who used to be in a band together.

There will be screenings at 10 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. On Mondays, following an 8 p.m. movie screening, the director will join the audience for lectures and other special events. Call (02) 747-7001 for more information.
