[마이데일리 = 남안우 기자] 2010년에는 일본을 중심으로 한국의 걸그룹 열풍이 불었다. 드라마 영화에 이어 신한류라고 불리는 걸그룹 한류의 중심에는 소녀시대가 있었다. 소녀시대는 일본 내 ‘신 한류’ 열풍을 일으키며 제2의 한류 붐을 일으켰다. 카라도 한류에 가세한 가운데 그 한켠에는 궁금해지는 우리의 걸그룹이 있었다. 바로 원더걸스. 태국에 패러디 그룹이 있고 요즘 히트중인 심형래 영화 '라스크 갓파더'에 나오지만, 팬들은 궁금했다. 소녀시대 라이벌인 원더걸스는 뭘 할까.

원더걸스는 지난해 3월과 4월 한국 가수로는 최초로 미국 20 여개 도시를 돌며 공연을 펼쳤다. 2009년 미국에 진출한 지 채 1년도 안 돼 미국 음악시장에 이름 석 자를 남겼다. 이로 인해 원더걸스는 빌보드 선정 ‘21세 이하 최고의 팝스타 21인’ 중 16위에도 꼽혔다. 원더걸스의 ‘노바디’는 유튜브에서 아시아는 물론, 남미 유럽을 포함해 세계적으로 큰 화제가 될 만큼 유명곡이 됐다.

이후 원더걸스는 5월과 6월 중국을 비롯해 인도네시아, 싱가포르, 말레이시아 등지에서 쇼케이스를 열었고 8월 대만과 태국, 말레이시아를 돌며 공연을 개최했다. 반응은 성공적이었다. 소녀시대가 일본 활동에 치중했다면 원더걸스는 그 외의 시장을 공략했다. 미국 유력 언론인 ABC와 시카고 트리뷴은 “한국을 대표하는 가수”라며 원더걸스를 추켜세웠다.

올해도 소녀시대와 원더걸스는 서로 다른 시장을 개척하면서 각자의 입지를 확고히 할 전망이다. 소녀시대는 이르면 올 봄께 일본어 앨범을 발표할 예정이고 구체적인 계획이 나오진 않았지만 유럽 시장도 노크할 것으로 보인다. 국내 활동을 꾸준히 하면서 일본에서 ‘신 한류’ 바람을 계속 일으키겠다는 각오다.

소녀시대가 일본 활동에 집중하는 사이 원더걸스는 지난해에 이어 마찬가지로 미국 내 위상을 더욱 끌어올릴 예정이다. 가능하다면 또 한번의 미국 투어도 계획하고 있다. 원더걸스의 소속사인 JYP엔터테인먼트 측은 “2010년 보다는 2011년이 더욱 미국 내 활동에 주력하는 해가 될 것”이라고 전했다.

하지만 국내 활동을 아예 접는 것은 아니다. 미국 활동에 주력하지만 간간히 국내에 들어와 팬 미팅 및 이벤트를 통한 팬들과의 만남도 추진할 예정이다. 현재 원더걸스는 중국 내 프로모션을 진행 중이다.

새해를 중국에서 맞은 원더걸스는 귀국한 뒤 곧바로 미국으로 다시 날아간다. 현지화 전략에 더욱 힘을 쏟아 붓겠다는 복안이다. 글로벌 시장에서의 성공을 위한 확실한 디딤돌을 만들겠다는 각오로 원더걸스는 전 세계를 누비고 있다.

‘신 한류’의 초석을 닦은 소녀시대처럼 원더걸스가 팝 시장에 'K-POP' 열풍을 일으킬 수 있을 지 주목된다.

I understand a little hanggul. That article didn't really specifically stated any firm future plans by WG. It just said that Wondergirls will be focusing this year on their American activities(that is according to a statement they got by JYPe). This article also elaborates the success they gained during their work in the US(ie touring more than 20 cities in the US, billboard achievements, worlwide phenomenon of their song Nobody, etc). And how girlgroups like KARA and SNSD also gained more recognition with their Japanese ventures. Nothing specific about WG's plans.

Seoul, Korea – Last Godfather, “Box Office Number 1” even amidst bashing by Jin Jung Gwon

Shim Hyung-rae’s movie Last Godfather is becoming a box office hit even though it was bashed by cultural critic Jin Jung Gwon (48).

Within five days after the premier of Last Godfather, it drew 1,200,000 viewers and rose far ahead other competing movies to number one on the box office.

According to tabulation results by the combined computer system regarding movie theater entrance tickets, Last Godfather attracted 13,000 viewers on the first day of its premier and 400,000 viewers on January 1st, in just one day, and recorded total viewer number of 1,216,077.

Especially, in the first week of box office, Last Godfather was the first in 24 weeks after July’s movie Inception to record 1,200,000 viewers within five days of its premier. Also, Last Godfather is far ahead of box office number 2 by at least two fold.

Last Godfather is a global comedy about godfather’s hidden son Young-gu who does mind-blowing, totally unexpected things in New York. Shim Hyung-rae, director and Korea’s greatest comedian, is providing laughter to many through his own unique slapstick comedy, improved production skills, and stable acting of top Hollywood actors such as Harvey Keitel from Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction.

Meanwhile, Jin Jung Gwon posted on his Twitter account, saying “I never revisit a store that sells defective merchandise, so I will not watch it again. If Shim Hyung-Rae’s fans insist that I watch, I could watch it and say a few words but that will never happen again.” His bashing of the Last Godfather has raised a controversy.

Earlier in 2007, Jin Jung Gwon had written a harsh criticism of Shim Hyung-rae’s movie D-War.
