Discovery partners Seoul govt to launch new series

SEOUL - Discovery Networks has tied up with the Seoul Metropolitan Government to produce and launch a new series - Hip Korea - on the channel globally in 2009.

The two-part documentary traces the rise of Korean pop culture through the eyes of pop singer Rain and film star Byung Hun Lee, and how the two local stars have impacted the global entertainment scene.

Vikram Channa, vice president, content of Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific noted how “Korea is a dynamic place for content”.

Discovery’s latest series was co-produced with Bang Singapore and follows recent shows on Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan and director John Woo.

툭하면 잘려도 씩씩한 프로그램 작가

첫사랑 위해 기억상실증이라 속이죠

애국가 보다 낮은 시청률을 자랑하는 프로그램 작가로 툭하면 잘리고, 그러다 술만 먹으면 10년 전 첫사랑의 이야기를 꺼내는 한 여자가 있다.

말 한번 걸어보지 못했고 이제는 기억에도 희미해질 만도 한데 시간이 지날수록 애틋한 마음은 더해만 갔다.

그러다 하늘이 도와주셨는지 우연히 그 사람의 차에 치이게 되고, 이 사고를 계기로 제대로 고백을 하리라 마음 먹었다.

기억상실증이라 속이면서. 오는 18일 개봉을 앞둔 ‘달콤한 거짓말’은 그렇게 시작된다.

“ 이 영화가 제 열 번째 작품인데, 그 중 가장 많은 관객이 들지 않을까 기대하고 있어요.”

브라운관에서 시청률 퀸 자리를 놓치지 않았던 박진희였지만 스크린에서의 흥행이 아쉬웠나 보다.

이미 ‘궁녀’ ‘만남의 광장’을 통해 그 목마름을 해소했다 싶었지만 ‘달콤한 거짓말’의 입소문은 생각보다 거세다.

언론시사회 전 진행한 블라인드 시사회에서 10점 만점에서 9.3 점을 받았으니 기대감이 클만도 하다.

“원제는 ‘기억상실의 시대’였어요. 스릴러 느낌도 나고, 사극이냐는 소리도 많이 듣고.(웃음) 50만원 걸고 제목 공모했는데도 적당한 제목이 나오질 않더니 100만원으로 올리니까 나오더라고요.”

극중 박진희는 10년 전으로 돌아가 고2 여학생으로 나온다.

긴 생머리를 질끈 묶고, 얼굴 반을 가리는 안경을 쓴 모습이 이제 막 서른 살을 넘긴 여배우답지 않게 풋풋하다.

“교복 입기에는 너무 나이를 먹었잖아요. 아역배우를 따로 쓰자고 했는데 감독님이 ‘올드한 당신이 교복을 입은 게 웃기기 때문’이라는 말에 항복할 수밖에 없었어요.”

실제로 여중, 여고, 여대를 나온 탓에 남학생을 짝사랑하는 경험은 없었지만 교회 선생님을 남몰래 흠모했던 기억을 되살렸다는 박진희. 때마침 얼굴에 난 커다란 여드름을 가리지 않고 그대로 촬영할 정도로 사실감을 살렸다.

분장팀이 화장으로 가리자고 할 때 여드름이야 말로 극의 흐름을 살린다고 생각해 노메이크업으로 촬영에 임한 것.

“툭하면 방송국에서 짤리지만 위에서 나오지 말라고 해도 ‘다음에 더 열심히 할게요’라고 씩씩하게 대답하는 지호가 뭐랄까. 가슴에 와 닿았어요. 영화 속 주인공들이 겉은 멀쩡해도 사실 뭐 하나라도 잘 되는 게 없는 인간들이잖아요. 그런 사람들이 진심을 찾아가는걸 영화로 보여 주고픈 욕심이 컸죠.”

시나리오를 결정할 때 소박하고 따뜻한 영화를 선호한다는 박진희에게 부산에서 진행된 두 달 간의 올 로케이션도 색다른 경험이었다.

흔히 말하는 감독과 배우간의 ‘기싸움’도 없고 예의 바른 두 꽃미남 남동생을 곁에 두고 찍는 재미도 쏠쏠했다.

친구로 나온 조한선이 전작을 부산에서 찍은 터라 숨어있는 맛집을 찾아다니는것도 화목한 분위기를 더했다.

10년 넘게 여배우로 살아왔지만 연인에게 듣고 싶은 달콤한 거짓말이있을 터. 뻔한 거짓말이라도 사랑하는 사람에게 듣고 싶은 말을 물어봤다.

“세상에서 가장 예쁜 건 너야. 내 눈에는 너 밖에 안 보여. 이 정도? 아무래도 친구들이 저보고 사랑에 대한 환상이 많아 연애하기 힘들다고 하는 이유가 이건가 봐요.

거짓말을 해서라도 곁에 두고 싶은 연예인이요? 음…. 이병헌 선배님이요. 외모도 멋지지만 영어도 유창하시고, 근육도 장난 아니고. 어머, 이러다 달콤한 스캔들 나는 거 아니에요?(웃음)”

No better hosts for this program but these 2 popular megastars who created a strong impact in K-entertainment industry and created waves in Hollywood. BH in G.I. Joe and ICWTR and Rain in Speed Racer and the up-coming NInja Assassin. LBH and Rain put Korea in the consciousness of a lot of people who do not even know where Korea is situated.

I hope we can all watch this when it gets shown next year.

2008 packed surprises - Top 5 Most Successful Films

Data released by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) on December 2, revealed a number of modest budgeted films in the top five of most successful films in 2008. However, the list is lead by the big budget blockbuster The Good, the Bad, and the Weird by KIM Jee-woon. The kimchi western attracted 7.03 million viewers, undoubtedly, partly due to the presence of the stars SONG Kang-ho, LEE Byung-hun, and JUNG Woo-sung.

Number two was 2008's biggest surprise, the sleeper hit The Chaser. NA Hong-jin’s low budget thriller mobilised 5 million Koreans. The Chaser, its director NA, and its leading actors KIM Yoon-suk and HA Jung-woo also received much critical acclaim along with major awards.

KANG Woo-suk’s Public Enemy Returns accumulated 4.2 million spectators. SUL Kyung-gu reprised his role in the third instalment, this time pursuing a criminal played by JUNG Jae-young. JANG Jin delivered the screenplay of the third most popular film.

Forever the Moment, became one of the rare blockbuster Korean sports films. The handball film is directed by YIM Soon-rye and her line-up includes MOON So-ri, KIM Jung-eun, and EUM Tae-woong. The veteran women’s team with Olympic ambitions scored 4 million tickets.

Historically themed films perform on average well in the Korean market. KIM Yoo-jin’s The Divine Weapon reached 2008’s fifth place by recording an attendance number of 3.75 million. The Divine Weapon is JUNG Jae-young’s second film in the top five. His and HAN Eun-jung’s characters are crucial in the defence of the Joseon dynasty against invaders.

More small budget films performed impressively, in particular, CHANG’s horror film Death Bell, and JANG Hoon’s action drama Rough Cut.

SKH attended the KFA as he was mainly there to present the Best Actor award.. his own nomination doesn't pull through, unfortunately.

Totally agree that only BH could get away with it.. so unexpectedly but that's our Hunnie, during the rather "tense" moment when the BD Best Actor award was about to be announced.. the ever charming Byunghun-ssi simply lightens the mood, such a sweet Nom.

I'm not sure either (poorly-relying on online translator), sometimes the Korean fans do post un-related BH news to chat among themselves, although they did mention him in this piece of discussion.. not sure what it really meant, significantly or otherwise.

The actress is Park Jin Hee, most recent news is that she's coming out in a new movie "Sweet Lies' with Lee Ki Woo and Jo Han Sun.

Wholeheartedly agree. BH is only starting to make (more and more) waves as CNN had reported, he's never staying idle at all.. even if we don't hear much of him, we can be sure that he's up to something. Some clueless thoughts wonder why he's highly-noted by CNN as well as the international media & critics, simple answer.. because he's good in what he does to be deservingly supported and respected by fans till today & beyond.

Discovery could not have chosen a better personality to showcase the impact of Korean entertainment especially someone directly in the heart of the movie industry, always there with his strong support and passion to excel.

I really do not mean to spoil anyone's new year but rubie is not perfect nor stress-free. This may seem drastic but necessary.

With no updates recently.. maybe.. we'll see BH at PD Yoon Seok Ho's wedding on January 11th, 2009. The 51-year old famous PD responsible for Hallyu Wave's megahit Season drama series (WS, AIMH, SS, SW).. is finally walking down the aisle with his wife-to-be, 13 years younger than him.

While most media attention will be focused on the known Hallyu stars made popular by the Asian top series.. obviously.. a lot of other stars like Lee Byunghun and Lee Young Ae might be attending the ceremony as well. LBH is actually a close acquaintance of PD Yoon as he had starred in the latter's earliest drama in 1992, Tomorrow Love.. which was BH's first taste of leading role success. In fact, they're close enough for BH to visit PD Yoon while he was filming Spring Waltz a couple years ago.

Will we see Byunghun-ssi at the (famously romantic) PD's wedding?

The amount breaks the record in the history of Korean TV series that attract investment in advance.

At the same time, TBS television has decided to broadcast “Iris” from September 2009 onwards, and scheduled for 22:00 to 23:00 out-on-demand time. This is also the first South Korean TV drama that TBS arranges its airing time in this slot.

Despite that "Iris" is still in the final stages of casting, and even though a formal plan has yet to be enacted, but Lee Byung Hun’s reputation as "Korean star" has already brought amazing results.

In addition, PD Kang Je-kyu of “Taegukgi” and “Shiri” who has won the reputation of the world's great master of South Korean film director will serve as the chief of the production team. This led to Japan and other overseas markets’ fervent interest in the drama. The three of them will show the friendship, conflicts and cooperation between the two Koreas.

I had goose bumps watching the full trailer of ICWTR like its the first time I was actually seeing it.

And news on the grand production for IRIS, well, the delay had its reason!

I'm learning a lesson when it comes to Lee Byung Hun...its always a case of wait and see...patience has its rewards.
