Thanks willenette, for sharing this beautiful article.  We really can't wait for him to be discharged. Whatever the antis do, Rain is unsinkable. I am so happy that many write-ups are now surfacing in favor and in defense of him.  :)  So, what shall we call the Rain-KTH loveteam, as  other fans are now suggesting different names?  :))

Grounded singer Rain submitted book reviews as punishment assignment
2013/01/15

By Kim Eun-jung

SEOUL, Jan. 15 (Yonhap) -- Conscripted K-pop star Rain has read two books and submitted their reviews to his boss while being grounded in his unit for a week, a punishment for dating a top TV actress while on official duty, military officials said Tuesday.

The 30-year-old singer, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, was ordered not to leave his unit for one week, the lightest form of discipline, after he was spotted dating actress Kim Tae-hee while on work-related leave last month.

Under military regulations, Jung, an Army corporal in a unit that provides programming for TV and radio to promote the military, is banned from making private contact with civilians without approval while on duty.

During the probation period that ended Tuesday, he was ordered to read two books -- "It Hurts Because It's the Youth," a best seller essay for youth written by Seoul National University Prof. Kim Ran-do, and "The Wolf of Wall Street" by American writer Jordan Belfort, a story about a New York stockbroker who refuses to cooperate in a large securities fraud case.

The military decided to punish him to set an example as the news of his dating stirred a strong public backlash. The military has often come under public fire for giving special treatment to celebrities on service.

All able-bodied South Korean men are conscripted to serve roughly two years in the armed forces.

According to the defense ministry, Rain spent 71 days off duty last year, his first year serving in the unit. The number is much larger than the average 43 days given to ordinary soldiers from 2009 through last year. He will be discharged in July.

Rain Requests Formal Transfer to the Front Lines of the DMZ

Following the controversy over Rain and his military duties, Rain has formally requested a transfer in his duties and assignment.

Rain held a meeting recently with the Defense Media Agency (DEMA) in which Rain expressed his desire to be transferred back as a regular soldier and to be reassigned to the front lines of Korea in the regions close to the tense North and South Korean border.

Since the revelation of his dating status with Kim Tae Hee, Rain had been under investigation for failure to properly wear his military uniform and for potentially receiving favorable privileges during his service in the past year.

At the end of the investigation, the singer received a light reprimand and probation for seven days for failure to properly adhere to rules over his military uniform but was dismissed of the other allegations.

The entertainer since then expressed his regret over the incident and for affecting his colleagues at the DEMA and promised he would serve out the remainder of his military service honorably and in self-reflection.

A representative for DEMA confirmed it had received a request from Rain to be transferred to the front lines but said it would begin considering the request once the proper paper work had been submitted and received by DEMA.

Rain has approximately seven months left of his mandatory military duties.

(LEAD) Singer Rain wants transfer to frontline duty

SEOUL, Jan. 15 (Yonhap) -- Conscripted K-pop singer Rain, who is in trouble for dating his girlfriend while serving in the military, has recently applied for frontline duty, a close aide to the singer said Tuesday.

The 30-year-old singer has been serving as what the military has dubbed an "entertainment soldier" in a military unit that provides programming for TV and radio broadcasts to promote the military since early last year.

AEN20130115007300315_01_i.jpg

Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, is one of the most popular male celebrities in South Korea and a well-known star in other Asian nations.

He was ordered not to leave his unit for one week, the lightest form of discipline, after he was spotted dating actress Kim Tae-hee while on work-related leave last month.

"Rain has recently expressed his desire to spend his remaining period in service at a frontline Army unit," the aide said. "He no longer wants to engage in performances and broadcasts as a serviceman but to work together with other rank-and-file soldiers on frontline duty."

He already applied for frontline duty and is now awaiting approval from the Defense Ministry, the aide said.

The singer appears to have made the decision as his behavior has sparked outpourings of criticism on the special treatment for celebrities in service.

Under military regulations, Rain is banned from making private contact with civilians without approval while on duty.

2013-01-15 [Pastor Kim Guan Sun’s psalm] Rain’s right to date

 English Translation

[Pastor Kim Guan Sun’s psalm]  Rain’s right to date

I remembered when I was serving as troop information and education officer at the army, I had to work outside once with a broadcasting station on an important filming project.  I finished my work at about 12 midnight and went home to sleep.  The next day on my way back to the troop, I met with a friend, and resolved some personal issues.  It was just common sense.

Recently singer Rain (Jung Jihoon) was in trouble because compared to other soldiers he had more leave days, and he went out too often.  On top of these when he went out on business he had a private meeting, and did not wear a beret. There were photos as evidence.  All these had become news and created exhaustive disputes.  I watched these with a heavy heart.  I do not see why these should become issues.  Is this the so called news sense? I also do not know why so many people cry out loudly to abolish the entertainment soldiers. Utilizing various talents in the army is not limited to entertainment soldiers only.  There are soldiers talented in sports, music, languages etc.  It is a beneficial thing.

Because of the special characteristics of being an entertainment soldier Rain was seen as having special privileges.  It was ignited into disputes until a military official had to come out to make explanations and even had to talk about disciplinary action.  I am not sure if this is a right thing.  I cut in this exhaustive dispute because the suspicion I had on what caused such dispute cannot be erased. Rain is a famous celebrity.  As soon as he shows his face the traffic is blocked, that is Rain. “He is dating” someone who also happens to be a female actress known by everyone in our country.

We want to know every detail about the private lives and secrets of such celebrity or famous people.  Not just knowing.  After we grab hold of the information we engage passionately in malicious talk.  This case has the symptom and tendency in becoming a mass hysteria.  The public opinion just started on one side, netizens are spreading judgements on the internet. I know well this does not just happen in Rain’s case.  But this time Rain suffered more severe criticism than any other celebrity soldiers.  The reason seems to be: he is dating a famous actress.  I don’t quite understand why people react like this,  except perhaps I could say they just feel upset.  May be some unknown inside of them has been hit.

I hope people could be more mature.  I have well past the age of being Rain’s fan, and I do not know him very well.  I write this article not because I am biased towards special people like Rain.  Not only  do I worry that too much over sensitive reaction is causing a lot of stress to one person, and making the military in a difficult position.  I also believe we should protect everybody’s personal rights.  Let us let them enjoy their date relaxedly.  I also have a son who is serving his 13th month in the army, although he is not a celebrity.

class="entry-title"Rumors of Rain requesting to be moved to the front lines revealed to be false

Rumors of Rain having put in a request to be moved to the front lines of the DMZ have been revealed to be false.

After Rain’s controversy and his punishment, rumors had started to float around that he had put in a formal request to be transferred to the front lines.

In response to the rumors, a representative from the Ministry of Defense said, “When [Rain] was talking with the Ministry of Defense, he just said, ‘If it’s like this, I’d rather go to the front lines’ to express how he felt, but it is false to look at this as a formal request of assignment change. In the 7 months he has remaining, he will be doing his best to perform his duties as a PR recruit.

The Ministry of Defense emphasized that celebrity recruits were also soldiers and said, “Soldiers can only change their position if the leader judges that it is necessary for the job. No solider can change their position because they simply want to.

Military service mischief a losing battle

15222113.jpg

Iconic K-pop star Rain came under fire over a series of paparazzi photos indicating he violated military rules, reflecting how seriously military duty is taken by the public.[JoongAng Ilbo]

On New Year’s Day, paparazzi photos were released showing Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, on several dates with actress Kim Tae-hee over the past couple of months, including during the Christmas holidays. Later that day, the management agency of the 33-year-old Kim officially confirmed their relationship.

The announcement was met with a barrage of criticism suggesting that the K-pop icon’s romance bloomed at the expense of his military duty. Rain is halfway through his two years of mandatory service.

In the most recent photographs, the 31-year-old celebrity was caught flouting military guidelines by not wearing a beret. He also was accused of making “private contact” with civilians while on duty, also a violation of military rules.

The official Web site of the Ministry of National Defense was flooded with postings calling for Rain to be disciplined, with thousands of people signing an online petition urging an investigation.

The Rain backlash is the latest example of Koreans’ sensitivity regarding the country’s mandatory military service. There is little tolerance for soldiers who attempt to use their civilian fame to dodge the draft or receive special treatment after a spate of scandals involving men from wealthy families caught while trying to avoid their national duty, especially at a time of heightened tension with North Korea.

In the world of show business, there is new term - “militarisk” - for the potential image problems that could result from mandatory service. How celebrities conduct themselves in the military can make or break their careers.

“The mood against draft-dodgers and negligence of duty is so hostile that nowadays entertainers feel it’s better to get it over and done with,” says Ha Jae-geun, a pop culture columnist.

Acknowledging the public outcry over the Rain photos, the Defense Ministry was quick to respond. It held a press conference on Jan. 3, a day after the accusations surfaced, with spokesman Kim Min-seok saying, “During his meetings with actress Kim, he had private contacts [with her], which is a violation of service rules. The battalion will take proper measures against him to ensure fairness with other soldiers.”

Last Tuesday, Rain was put on probation and confined to his barracks for seven days after a disciplinary committee decided he violated rules that forbid a soldier from private business while on duty.

But the punishment was not enough to assuage public anger after a series of reports saying he has been granted leave more than 60 times in the past year, almost twice the average for regular soldiers.

Rain serves in a PR division in charge of promoting the Army by en-gaging in various forms of performance, including concerts and plays.

“We formed a special division in 1996 because it is good for both entertainers and military,” says a representative of the Defense Ministry. “Entertainers fear they will lose fame. But if they are serving in the unit, they can still be involved in performances and the Army’s image can benefit.”

Rain’s leaves were legitimate and mainly to rehearse and perform for military events, he says.

Frustration lingers

Public anger over celebrities trying to manipulate or avoid military duty can be traced to the case of Steve Seungjun Yoo, a Korean-America pop artist, who was arguably the biggest star on the K-pop scene in late 1990s and early 2000s. His good looks, combined with his rigorous, sophisticated choreography and rapping, were a magnet for enthusiastic female fans. He swept numerous music awards.

15222446.jpg

Top: Korean-American singer Yoo Seung-jun instantly fell from favor after acquiring U.S. citizenship. Above: Hip-hop rapper MC Mong has disappeared from the public eye following his military enrollment controversy.[JoongAng Ilbo]
Yoo’s high-flying career crashed and burned in 2002 because he chose to avoid mandatory service.

Yoo repeatedly stated on television that he would serve his “holy duty of national defense.” But in 2002, just before he was to be inducted, the singer, who lived in Southern California until he was 13, became a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Korean society was enraged. The government considered Yoo’s decision an act of desertion and deported him, permanently banning him from the country.

“Since the controversy involving Yoo, the issue of military service has been taken extremely seriously and people have stricter standards toward TV stars,” says pop columnist Moon Han-pyeong. “People think there should be no special treatment or exemption for any group.”

Yoo has been active in China since then, hoping to regain his popularity through different demographics. The singer made his first formal public appearance in 10 years by attending the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards in Hong Kong.

“For the past 10 years I went through hardships and painful times that I cannot explain with words, and got to where I am today. I am really hurt,” he said at the awards, adding that he has no plan to resume activity in Korea.

A more recent controversy involves MC Mong, a Korean hip-hop rapper whose real name is Shin Dong-hyun.

The entertainer was convicted of extracting healthy teeth to evade the draft. He was given a one-year suspended jail term before the Supreme Court acquitted him last May.

Even after the trial clearing him, MC Mong, a frequent guest on TV variety shows, disappeared from the entertainment industry.

Song Seung-heon, a popular actor with a huge following in Japan and other parts of Asia, caused an avalanche of criticism in 2004 after attempting to avoid the military by using falsified medical records. He later joined the Army and has resumed his career, but most agree he is not as popular as he used to be.

Military boost

But while trying to shirk one’s duty can destroy careers, celebrities who play by the rules can get a big boost from their military service.

Actor Hyun-bin received hero’s welcome last December when the heartthrob was discharged after serving for a year and nine months.

A discharge ceremony at Marine Corps Headquarters in Gyeonggi was attended by thousands of fans and a throng of reporters. Banner-waving fans expressed their admiration by donating about four tons of rice to charity to commemorate his return.

Hyun-bin won the hearts and minds of the public by volunteering for the Marines, known as the military’s toughest branch, rather than serving in the public relations unit reserved for most entertainers, including Rain.

Military records sometimes can even move nonfans.

Moon Hee-jun debuted in 1996 as a member of H.O.T., an iconic idol boy band that dominated the K-pop charts in the 1990s and won many awards.

After the group disbanded, however, his career declined as he moved into rock. K-pop fans mocked his love for the genre and criticized him as a fake rocker.

But Moon changed minds by reporting on time to serve in the Army. Some fans, as well as about 50 reporters, waited outside the gates of the Army grounds in 2005 when he enlisted.

Psy also was put to the “military test” before becoming an international phenomenon.

Accused of negligence during his first term of service, Psy regained public favor by willingly serving an exemplary second stint.

“During my 12 years as a singer, I almost had to end my career since people shunned me due to my insincere military service,” he said later. “But finally people gave me their love so I could become what I am today.”

The risk of being perceived as somehow trying to avoid or manipulate military service is so great that the trend these days is for celebrities to publicly declare they will fulfill their duty, even at the peak of their careers.

Actor Yoo Seung-ho, who most recently starred in MBC’s “I Miss You,” says he will enlist next year. He is 20 and has recently gained enormous popularity.

“He has a strong will to fulfill his role as a member of Korea’s youth before being an actor. ‘I Miss You’ will be his last project before his enlistment,” says a representative of Yoo’s agency. “It will be a meaningful project for him, so he will be working even harder.”

Such decisions are not hard to understand. “Nowadays, dodging the military is almost like suicide for entertainers,” says Jeong Deok-hyun, a columnist specializing in pop culture.

Lightning Flash Weather Forecast: Let it Rain!

So what’s the dealio with Rain?

Rain-and-Kim-Tae-Hee-300x222.jpg

First we find out really juicy gossip that the “World Star” is dating the beautiful-oh-so-goddess-like Kim Tae Hee. Then BAM! He gets hit by military controversy like a bolt of lightning! Why, Rain, why are you caught up in all this controversy? (And not caught up with some more Kim Tae Hee! WONK! WONK!)

Did you shoot somebody on accident during training? Did you burn down the Korean flag? Did you pledge allegiance to Japan?

No what he did is worse, it is UNFORGIVABLE. (Cue Satire) He forgot to wear his military cap! He took a little detour while he was outside. (Going out to meet Kim Tae Hee according to the pictures) Suddenly Netizens and Korea are down on Rain’s case and they are pulling a Stephen Colbert. (Don’t know what I mean? Click here!)

Rain’s punishment for his offenses weren’t that bad. He had to write an apology letter, read a book and write a review about it. But, right now, his image has taken a big hit and the Korean public is crying out that celebrity treatment in the military is unfair!

So why is this such a big deal that Lightningstix has to write about it? Well, it seems like the public is using this opportunity to speak out against celebrities receiving preferential treatment in the military. Why is this significant? Celebrities and South Korea’s mandatory military service have had a rocky relationship.

(video skipped / unrelated.....)

yoo-seung-jun-300x148.jpg

(RUH OH)

It hearkens all the way back to… 2002. South Korea had its World Cup, and K-Pop solo artists were the fad at the time. One solo artist named Yoo Seung Joon was in a peculiar situation. He had both a Korean and American citizenship. On TV shows he made appearances where he promised he would attend his mandatory Korean military service.

Well, Yoo Seung Joon switched his mind the day before and for a while all of the South Koreans with American citizenships were scrutinized. After this incident the fire began to burn! It continued on! WE DIDN’T START THE FIRE~~~~~

Here’s what happened afterwards:

moon-he-jun-300x260.jpg

(Cray Cray Defense)

H.O.T.’s Moon Hee Jun claimed he was crazy. PSY had to do his military service all over again — when he was almost finished! Supposedly he hadn’t performed his duties properly. Then, we had MC Mong who got caught for forging fake medical conditions to avoid his military service.

PSY3.jpg

(Have Two Military Numbers)

Some foreign media sources are stating that military service is always a picky issue with Koreans because of the relations with North Korea. You see technically the two countries are still at war. I agree with this contention somewhat. But if you dig down deeper I think it has to do with envy and jealousy.

mc-mong-300x450.jpg

(Oooh, I’m so sick I don’t have to go to the military~)

Doing your mandatory military service in South Korea is an arduous affair that most people would get out of if they had the chance. I believe, people who go through their military service probably hate the fact that other people are having a it easier because they are rich, celebrities, have other foreign citizenship, and etc.

Honestly, that kind of reasoning has a valid point. If it is mandatory and everyone has to do it, then nobody should get preferential treatment, right? RIGHT?

But, when was the world ever fair like that?
