According to the Yonhap news agency, over 32 percent of 100 males in the top 11 conglomerate families were exempt from military service, nearly three percentage points higher than the average in the population. And among those born in the 1970s, the exemption rate is a whopping 40 percent.

While the reasons for the exemption vary from sickness to a foreign passport, they face harsh criticism for their alleged lack of solidarity and social responsibility.

The 11 conglomerates included Samsung, LG, SK, and Lotte.
