Gong Yoo: My first memory of her was...I guess it's because Eun Hye is a former singer, but she treated me really well as a sunbae (senior) even though she had debuted before me. [Gong Yoo began acting before Eun Hye, but Eun Hye is considered senior to him in the entertainment business because two industries are closely linked in Korea^^]

YEH Series: THE IMPACT OF HER DRAMAS Part I
class="topictitle" style="margin: 0px; line-height: 32px; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"How Coffee Prince Changed Korea

05mnb.jpg

I have told friends before that Coffee Prince is an iconic drama, and that it can not be viewed and compared with other dramas which had great ratings as well. This is because Coffee Prince changed Korea's culture in many ways. It had not only broken the barrier of anti homosexuality in dramas, but introduced modern cross dressing, brought out the 'Go Eun Chan hairstyle and fashion', made coffee books fly out of the bookstores, opened barista schools, coffee specialty stores, and etc.. Here are some excerpts from an article 'Korea's 1st Barista' released today which discusses such phenomenon. If anyone remembers Coffee Prince episode 3 with a barista doing the 'Latte Art', the guy is interviewed in this article.^^ Enjoy the article.

______

The world's most expensive coffee, 'Kopi Luwak (Indonesia)'.
It is coffee made from the beans of coffee berries which have been eaten by the Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) and other related civets, then passed through its digestive tract. A civet eats the berries for their fleshy pulp. In its stomach, proteolytic enzymes seep into the beans, making shorter peptides and more free amino acids. Passing through a civet's intestines the beans are then defecated, keeping their shape. After gathering, thorough washing, sun drying, light roasting and brewing, these beans yield an aromatic coffee with much less bitterness, widely noted as the most expensive coffee in the world. [From Wikipedia]

It is extremely popular amongst the coffee maniacs. Many main actors in various movies, including the 'Bucket List' and 'Canmore Restaurant' site that "drinking Kopi Luwak" is something they must do before dying. This concept is a difficult one for Korea to understand as a country that drinks instant coffee from machines and mixes.

But MBC TV Drama 1st Shop of Coffee Prince, which ended in August of 2007 has created a hot issue and established a new culture. Although the ratings for the final episode resulted in 27.8%, it's actual popularity & interest ratings (eg. related internet search, download viewing, reruns, and etc.) has been analyzed as that of way over the 40% mark. If the ratings of a drama reaches 50%, it is considered to be a 'national drama'. But if the popularity & interest ratings exceed 30%, it is considered that a new culture is established.

Just as well, drama 1st Shop of Coffee Prince created a new culture of enjoying the coffee the right way, and gave rise to the barista profession that specialized in hand-drip coffee. The interest was so high, that while main characters, Choi Han Kyul (Gong Yoo) and Go Eun Chan (Yoon Eun Hye)'s love line theme was at the center of attention, even barista Kim Jae Wook earned the title of a new Hallyu star by playing 'No Sun Ki' besides them.

With such trending momemtum, luxury coffee specialty stores have opened up and is growing at a rapid pace. No longer is coffee business considered an industry that is a part of "selling water", but it has become the biggest spotlight amongst franchise businesses with the 21st century young people. And to provide the supply for the coffee, barista schools are in high demand.

Due to the effect of the drama, a leader to meet the quickly rising demand from the society is established. He is Korea's first barista, CEO Lee Dong Jin. He is mainly responsible for spreading and introducing new concepts in coffee, and introducing the idea of bringing style and romance to producing coffee. He was also the consultant and was responsible for actually teaching the actors of the 1st Shop of Coffee Prince in the ways of being a barista. We met up with him to discuss the profession of barista and the specialty brand 'Gabe Dorim'.

[Excerpts from the interview]

What has the TV Drama, Coffee Prince left us?

When you talk about the profession of barista, you can not talk about its vision and attraction without mentioning the 1st Shop of Coffee Prince. It's because of the huge impact the drama had on the public in marketing the profession. Even if it did not explain it in details, there's huge impact in showing what barista does through its image, action, and movement...The third most successful event achieved through the drama was that the great actors' great acting highlighted the profession of barista...

The thing that was interesting while watching the filming process of the drama was that specialized barista words would pop out through the mouth of the actors when they were doing the ad lib (acting without script). In particular, I just thought that Yoon Eun Hye was a talent who was just so great in acting. She was great with washing the dishes and moving, working like a barista. She was a standard barista in pouring the coffee. New barista students will usually shake, but even though Yoon Eun Hye is an actor, she was just great. She also raised the quality and completeness of the drama by perfectly utilizing the specialized barista terms during the ad lib (speaking, acting without the script) parts...

Hence, there are now more than 20,000 baristas in Korea today...

The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince has displayed it's power once more.

Coffee Prince has continued it's success on the cable television and it's aired repeatedly since ending it's original broadcast. It's first re-broadcast on the MBC Dramanet, which aired 9 continuous hours of the episodes, produced record breaking ratings for the cable network. Episode 6 recorded ratings of 10.6%, and it peaked at 13.246%. The viewers expressed much praise that they were extremely happy to be able to enjoy the drama they loved in a 9 hrs marathon. Since then, Coffee Prince has been re-aired numerous times to much success, crushing the newer programs in ratings each time.

Cable programs are considered national programs in a rare case that it breaks the 10.0% ratings mark. As Kim Young Bum, Program Director of the Mnet's record breaking Super Star K2 stated, "There's a huge significance in breaking the 10.0% ratings mark on a cable program. The only way for a cable program to break the 15.0% ratings mark would be if all the cable subscribers watched that program." Super Star K2 became a national sensation, reaching 12.99%

Hi everyone! Happy 2014 ! Just to share an article here:

class="at_ttl"Being Thin Does Not Come Naturally To Many K-Drama Stars
Yoon Eun Hye

Some of the most slender k-drama actors and actresses were not always so enviably streamlined. It might surprise fans to know that for actors such as Yoon Eun Hye, Song Hye Kyo and Seo In Guk, being thin does not come naturally.

Yoon Eun Hye, the star of "Missing You" and "Future's Choice" still had some baby fat when she debuted with the group Baby VOX. Now she is fashionably slim but she had to undergo food therapy to get there. She maintains a nutritious but limited diet to stay at that weight. Her diet focuses on fish, vegetables, soup, fruit and beans.

THE TRUE YEH: ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS SERIES

"Yoon Eun Hye's inconsideration of her own health and   prioritizing her acting won over the respect of the crew."

YEH rejected substitute actor to perform on her behalf for dangerous scene and her creativity been shown on the drama, are all proofs of her professionalism.

Even PD Park praises her "I do not know YEH well, but from the drama character Lee Ji Hyun acted by YEH, her existence is very crucial to me".

On the scene when YEH went to search for the pig on the mountain, her whole body was soaking wet in the lake.

Driving the machinery tractor was a very dangerous act, even when everyone tried to stop her, she still managed to learn it on her own secretly and performed the act herself, which made the crew very shocked.

PD Park says that, that night they were both were soaked wet in the lake, Yoon Eun Hye & Oh Man Seok both were down with the flu later. YEH had grass poisoning and her leg was swollen, but she never said a word of complaint, and still did her best. This made the crew started calling YEH as "Lee Ji Hyun" instead.

Through the drama, YEH started the trend of putting her mobile inside kid's rubber shoe. This was her idea and she bought the shoes from the market in the drama.

PD Park added that in the drama, the shirt YEH made for Oh Man Seok was in actual fact been sewn by YEH herself.
