Erotic 'Portrait' Fails to Capture Subject

Shin Yun-bok, the famed folk painter of the late Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910), has received much attention in recent months. It all started last year when a best-selling novel described the male artist as secretly being a woman.

In truth, there is little historical documentation of Shin's life, and none that questions his gender. Nevertheless, the fictional work was popular and provocative enough that it was made into the successful television drama, "The Painter of Wind," as well a new feature film.

If "The Painter of Wind" is a family-friendly version of the historical fiction, then the film, "Portrait of a Beauty," is its steamy, adults-only twin. While the TV series stars the perpetually wholesome Moon Geun-young in the lead role, the film features the sexy and feminine actress Kim Min-sun.

Unlike Moon, Kim doesn't quite convince the audience that she is trying hard to pass herself off as a "he." However, this is not a problem in "Portrait," which is less interested in the issue of pretense and more interested in exploring Shin's repressed feminine side. Kim's Shin may be effeminate and awkward, but her sexual longing simmers just beneath the surface.

As the film makes clear, the real Shin did in fact often deal with erotic subject matter in his paintings. Along with vivid and often humorous depictions of daily life, Shin was also a keen observer of the lives of gisaeng, or female entertainers, and their relationship with the upper class. "Portrait" is at its best when drawing connections between Shin's art and his - excuse me, her - observed world. The film also shows the conflict between Shin's art and the moralizing attitudes of the Joseon royal court.

Ultimately, the film implies that the real reason for Shin's interest in the sensual world of gisaeng was not her wish to observe them, but rather to be one - or more precisely, to be a woman. Indeed, Shin's womanly desires become more blatant as the film progresses.

Confused and conflicted, the artist finds help exploring her sexuality in a poor but smoldering hunk from the lower class. To spice up the amorous tale, "Portrait" then proceeds to throw in generous portions of romantic drama cliches, including love triangles, secret trysts, tragic choices and - what else - naked body painting.

This is where "Portrait" begins to look uncomfortably like a half-baked erotic offering on late night cable television. That's fine if you're just looking for a little titillation, but if that's all this film was after, then there was probably no need to drag a historical figure like Shin into the whole gender-switching business in the first place.

Provocative 'Portrait of a Beauty' Tops Movie Chart

The movie “Portrait of a Beauty,” which is drawing attention for its sensual exposure of heroine Kim Min-sun, reached the one-million-viewer mark, just nine days after its release on Nov. 13, according to CJ Entertainment distribution.

“Portrait of a Beauty” took the top spot at the box office, beating “Max Payne,” “Blindness” and “Quantum of Solace.” In particular, the leading film is grabbing impressive online ticket sales. Experts say the film’s audience is growing through strong world-of-mouth among moviegoers in their 40s or 50s.

The movie has stirred controversy with provocative scenes, including Kim Min-sun appearing nude and portrayals of homosexuality.

‘100만 찍고 140만 훌쩍!’

김민선이 주연한 영화 ‘미인도’(전윤수 감독·이룸영화사 제작)가 개봉 10일만에 140만 명을 웃도는 관객들을 동원하는 흥행을 이뤄냈다.

‘미인도’의 한 관계자는 “지난 13일 개봉된 ‘미인도’가 21일 금요일까지 전국 관객 101만명을 동원했다. 주말 관객까지 더하면 140만 명을 돌파할 것이 예상된다”고 밝혔다. 이어 “개봉 2주차에 접어들면서 각 극장마다 ‘미인도’의 상영관수를 늘리고 있다. 예매율도 계속 증가하고 있는 상태여서 앞으로 더 큰 흥행결과도 기대해볼 만 하다”고 전했다.

‘미인도’는 김민선의 화끈한 노출연기뿐 아니라, 조선 최고의 화가 신윤복이 여자였다는 비슷한 설정의 드라마 ‘바람의 화원’과 더불어 연일 이슈몰이 중이다. 특히 ‘맥스페인’, ‘007퀀덤오브솔러스’ 등 할리우드 블록버스터 경쟁작들을 제치고 국내 박스 오피스 1위를 기록해 한국 영화의 구세주로 평가받고 있다.

‘Over 1 million and even over 1.4 million!’

The Korean movie ’Miindo,’ starring actress Kim Minsun, has attracted more than 1 million audiences, and even over 1.4 million.

A concerned person said, "’Miindo’ was released on the 13th, and has drawn 1.01 million audiences until Friday. If we add up the weekend viewers, we expect the numbers to surpass 1.4 million. Movie theaters are increasing the screen quota for ‘Miindo,’ two weeks after it has been released. The number of advance ticket sales is on a steady rise, and we are looking forward to much more."

In the movie ’Miindo,’ not only does Kim Minsun show her naked body, but it also is gaining much attention as the drama ‘The Windy Flower Garden’ has a similar plot to the movie. It is regarded as the savior for the Korean movie industry, as it is topping the list over Hollywood blockbusters such as ’007-Quantum of Solace’ or Max Payne.’

Portrait of a Beauty sold to Japan, Singapore, and Thailand

JEON Yun-su’s Portrait of a Beauty is attracting great interest globally; first, it will be exported to Japan, Singapore, and Thailand. Yedang Entertainment closed these deals with the three countries at this month’s American Film Market (AFM) in Los Angeles.

Europe also expressed much interest in the Korean blockbuster. It is expected that the European deals will take place at 2009’s Berlin Market in February.

Portrait of a Beauty has topped the box office since its release, beating international blockbusters Quantum of Solace and Max Payne. The somewhat controversial take on Joseon dynasty painter SHIN Yoon-bok reached the one million viewers mark in only nine days, and just under 1.3 million (1,287,580) viewers after its second weekend leading the box office, according to its distributor CJ Entertainment.

Portrait of a Beauty is likely to face tough competition this weekend from RYU Jang-ha’s Hello Schoolgirl. Internet reservation site Max Movie reported that this week’s release Hello Schoolgirl leads the online reservations, beating Portrait of a Beauty which occupies second place.
