The Stars Of “Along With The Gods” Are Heading To Taiwan!

 

Heaven and Earth will collide as the stars of Along With The Gods heads to Taiwan!

The director and main cast members of Along With The Gods: The Last 49 Days will walk on the red carpet in Taiwan this August to promote the highly-anticipated film before it gets released in the country next month!

 

According to Lotte Entertainment, Director Kim Yong-hwa and actors Ha Jung Woo, Ju Ji Hoon, Kim Hyang Gi, Ma Dong Seok, Kim Dong Wook and Lee Jung Jae are all expected to depart from Korea on August 5 and visit Taiwan for four days.

[V Report Plus] ‘Spy Gone North’ no typical spy film: director Yoon Jong-bin

 

 

“The Spy Gone North” will be no ordinary spy action film, according to director Yoon Jong-bin.

 

“While spy films usually revolve around triumphing against an antagonist, (“The Spy Gone North”) is a story about the psychological essence of being a spy,” Yoon said via Naver’s V Live on Monday.

To accentuate the character-based plot, the film’s cinematographer Choi Chan-min explained that there “had to be a lot of close-ups” to portray detailed emotions and expressions.

Hwang Jung-min, whose filmography lists no shortage of box office hits, including “The Himalayas” (2015) and “The Wailing” (2016), plays the lead role of Park Seok-yong, a character loosely based on former South Korean intelligence agent Park Chan-seo.

 

“The words in the script are a mouthful. It felt like a Shakespearean play,” said Hwang. “It’s verbal action.”

Of the film’s director, Hwang said he is “tenacious” and his work is jammed with concepts.

 

The mastermind behind action hits “Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time” (2012) and “The Berlin File” (2013), Yoon debuted in South Korea’s cinematic industry with his college graduation thesis film “The Unforgiven,” which was widely acclaimed at the 2015 Busan International Film Festival.

“‘For whom and what are we fighting for?’ was the question that I wanted to throw,” said Yoon.

“The Spy Gone North” will hit theaters on Aug. 9.

[Herald Review] ‘Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days’ tries too hard

 

 

Megahit sequel has elements of the original, humor and spectacle, but falls short on blending altogether


There can be such a thing as too much “sinpa” in a movie. “Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds,” the second most successful Korean movie in history, was one case that got away with good acting and novelty of the set-up.

Its sequel, “Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days,” could be the one that finally went over the line.

For those of you not familiar with the term, sinpa in Korean cinema or drama refers to over-the-top acting or set-up that is meant to spark viewers’ emotions, usually in the form of a tearjerker.
 

 

On the surface, “The Last 49 Days” is devoid of a sob-fest and appears to have less sinpa. But the film tries even more than its predecessor to move the audience.

The flick takes off right where “The Two Worlds” left off, as our heroes Gangrim, Haewonmak and Lee Deok-choon -- agents of the afterlife played by Ha Jung-woo, Ju Ji-hoon and Kim Hyang-gi -- try to fend off the guardians of the underworld who attempt to attack their client Kim Soo-hong, played by Kim Dong-wook.

In the last film, Su-hong -- a soldier killed accidentally by a close colleague and buried alive -- turns himself into an evil phantom to haunt the living, therefore he is being perused in the underworld. Gangrim’s team -- grim reapers/advocates of the dead in the trials after death -- pleads his case by saying that the unjust nature of his death led to his actions.

Yeomra, king of the afterlife played by Lee Jung-jae, grants Gangrim’s wish to prove that Su-hong should be cleared of his charges. But this is only under the condition that Gangrim’s team bring to the underworld Heo Choon-sam, an elderly man living past his due time thanks to the protection of guardian god Seong-ju, played by Ma Dong-seok.

As in the first film, the plot moves between the events of the underworld and the real world, with Gangrim and Su-hong’s adventures in the trials to evade eternal damnation and Haewonmak and Deok-choon’s quarrels with Seong-ju. Another layer is added when Seong-ju, who turns out to be an ancient being over a thousand years old, tells the life and death of the pair when they were humans.

As expected, the Ma Dong-seok, Ju Ji-hoon and Kim Hyang-gi trio is responsible for most of the laughter and the scenes are genuinely hilarious. Ma is like Dwayne Johnson, the toughest, meanest-looking guy in the world and people just can’t stop smiling at the sight of him.

The movie also ventures down the past of Gangrim’s team a thousand years ago. The period piece section is visually impressive and all three actors look and play the part.

But here is the problem with these sections. While the humor of the modern-day part and the heart of the past part are enjoyable, there is just too much. The movie constantly interrupts more serious scenes with joke after joke, and it is hard to take Haewonmak seriously when he is made into a goofy character. It does not help that the guy plays the solemn badass at the same time.

Another mistake the movie makes is that the characters are almost too perfect. It feels like the film has to justify every bad deed of all the characters, and ends up making some of them saints, just like it did in the first one.

Kim Dong-wook’s Su-hong was one of the best things about the first movie. But here, he is turned into, for a lack of better word, a jerk. He just bickers and complains incessantly with Gangrim, which for the first 10 times can show character but after that is just annoying.

He is also unfazed by the peril that he faces, which really takes out the suspense. How can the audience be concerned about a character who just looks at the fiery pits of hell when it opens up in front of him?

Su-hong is a minor character in this film, but that doesn’t mean the director couldn’t have included a compelling subplot. Kim Dong-wook is a good actor and he is almost wasted in this movie.

As did the first film, this film follows the formula of “funny and lighthearted at first, serious and heart-warming in the climax,” which has almost become director Kim Yong-hwa’s modus operandi with pieces like “200 Pounds Beauty (2006),” “Take Off (2009)” and Mr. Go (2013). And the drama part is not bad.

Kim Hyang-gi’s performance, showing both the innocence and strength of the character and being the anchor to the most emotional sequence of the movie, is to be complimented. She even eclipses Ha, one of the best Korean actors today.

But that’s not saying much considering that his portrayal in this film is very one-dimensional, which is the same for most characters.

Director Kim is talented in making the audience laugh and cry, but the way he weaves the tearful and funny elements is still very clunky.

It is not a bad film at all. It was actually quite fun: The funny scenes were really enjoyable, the action was good, and the CG -- considering the budget -- was top marks. The odds are it will probably end up being the most successful Korean film of the year.

But every time it had a chance to take the next leap to be a great film, it just fell flat. It didn’t need to have a funny scene every step of the way; it didn’t need to make Haewonmak that goofy – again; and it didn’t need to absolve every single sin of our heroes. They’re human, we get it. They make mistakes.

It just tried too hard to be funny and heart-warming. When telling a joke, the biggest mistake one can make is to explain why it’s funny. This is what the movie did: It explained why scenes are heart-warming, why they are good people after all. The audience could have gotten it on their own and it would have been a better choice. This movie is anything but subtle.

The film is one that had potential to be great but ended up just being OK, and that is not OK.

“Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days” opens in theaters on Aug. 1.

(Yonhap Interview) Actor Ju Ji-hoon: Shooting two films simultaneously was tough but memorable

SEOUL, July 27 (Yonhap) -- You might know actor Ju Ji-hoon as Lee Shin, who played a good-looking crown prince of a fictional constitutional monarchy in Korea who is forced to marry a high-school girl in the 2006 MBC TV drama "Gung (Palace)." Or maybe as Mun Seon-mo, a good rookie cop who turns into a villain, if you catch him in his 2016 film "Asura: The City of Madness."

   But after the release of the last of the two-part fantasy action series "Along With the Gods" early next week, you will probably remember him for a long time as Haewonmaek, one of the three grim reapers who guide dead people into the afterlife and a skilled swordsman.

 

 

"Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds" smashed the box office last summer and become the second-most-viewed film of all time in South Korea with more than 14 million admissions.

 

Haewonmaek stands in the center of the main plot in the sequel, titled "Along With the Gods: The Last 49 Days," about the secret past of the three reapers from about 1,000 years ago.

 

"For me, this was the first time to be loved so much with my film," Ju said during an interview with Yonhap News Agency at a Seoul cafe on Friday. "Yesterday, I asked the audiences when I visited a theater for the new film's promotional event if there's anyone who hadn’t seen the first film yet and saw only one or two people in a total of four screening rooms raising their hands. Then I realized, 'wow, the film was really popular'."

   Directed by Kim Yong-hwa, the first installment was about a righteous firefighter named Ja-hong (played by Cha Tae-hyun) who is judged in seven hells for 49 days after his death, guided by three grim reapers played by Ha Jung-woo, Ju and Kim Hyang-gi.

 

In the sequel, the two grim reapers, Haewonmaek and Deok-chun (played by Kim Hyang-gi), go to carry out their mission to fetch an old man who lives with his only grandson in a shabby house and bumps into Seongju God (House Guardian God) who knows the secret pasts of the three grim reapers who were human beings before becoming gods. Actor Ma Dong-seok plays Seongju God, who helps people.

 

 

The two films were shot simultaneously, a first for the Korean film industry.

 

The 36-year-old actor said it was a really tough job but the 11 months of filming remains as a "pleasant" memory.

 

"We, the cast and crew, tried to constantly assure ourselves that we can do it, but it actually was too much trouble," he recalled. "For instance, we filmed the first installment on the same hell set in the first two days and then the second one from the third day. After a courtroom scene, we shoot the past. It was like my head was going to burst."

   What was really interesting is that despite all those hard work, it all remains as good memories thanks to the good teamwork with other actors and the director, he said.

 

However, Ju confided that he wasn't sure 100 percent if wanted to be in the series upon reading its screenplay.

 

"There were lines that I had to introduce hell to the dead, and actually they are for the audiences. I was supposed to naturally deliver the lines but I wasn't confident that I could."

   After finishing the two movies, Ju said he learned a lesson that he should not prejudge what he has not done before.

 

"I had a kind of a prejudice about audience-friendly movies before. Now I no longer have such a prejudice and understand that every film has its own virtues if made well."

“Along With The Gods 2” Sets New Record On Opening Day At The Box Office

 

 

The film “Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days” had a record-breaking opening day!

“Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days” tells the story of three grim reapers as they guide the 49th soul through the trials of the underworld with the promise of reincarnation.

According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), this second installment of the “Along with the Gods” series became the No. 1 movie at the box office with 1,232,672 moviegoers on the day of its premiere.

A source from “Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days” revealed that the film achieved 1,256,355 moviegoers by 10:30 p.m. KST on August 1. This was the total accumulated from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. KST, and the final number is predicted to be even larger since the allotted time ends at 12 a.m. KST.

This feat doesn’t come as a complete surprise. The film already set a record on the day before its release by selling 318,372 pre-sale tickets. Then on August 1, it sold 605,678 pre-sale tickets.

“Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days” also surpassed the opening day record of 1,182,374 moviegoers previously set by “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” making it the first Korean film in history to achieve over 1 million moviegoers on opening day.

The film also earned 9,574,284,200 won (approximately $8.6 million) or 69.4 percent of the total movie sales for that day. It was shown on 1,968 screens or 36 percent of screens nationwide.

Compared to “Avengers: Infinity War,” which became embroiled in a “screen monopoly” controversy by occupying 2,461 screens in April, the latest “Along with the Gods” film was able to bring in more moviegoers with about 500 fewer screens.

Some are predicting that “Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days” will also surpass 10 million moviegoers like its prequel “Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds.”

South Korean box office hit film Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days is extending its phenomenal success outside South Korea.

 

About 3,000 movie fans and journalists gathered in front of the Taipei City Hall on August 5 despite the sweltering weather to welcome the director and cast of the film as they walked the red carpet.

Joo Ji Hoon Shares How His Unique Hairstyle For “The Spy Gone North” Affected Him Off-Screen

 

 

The cast of “The Spy Gone North” recently appeared on MBC’s “Section TV Entertainment Relay.”

 

During the segment, Hwang Jung Min, Lee Sung Min, Jo Jin Woong, and Joo Ji Hoon complimented each other on their acting and shared stories from set. The movie was filmed in Taiwan and Joo Ji Hoon shared what happened when he joined the cast there.

 

 

“I was in Taiwan later than the others,” he said. “And everyone had diarrhea. While filming our scenes together, they conspired to try and make me eat the same food.”

 

Hwang Jung Min joked, “We couldn’t be the only ones suffering.”

 

Joo Ji Hoon also talked about his unique hairstyle for his character, who is a soldier. “I cut my sideburns into a straight line. My regular life became impossible. I couldn’t go anywhere. Even if I wore a hat, the sideburns would show. It was embarrassing.”

“Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days” continues to reach impressive new heights!

 

The film has recorded a total of 7,339,692 moviegoers according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) in its first week since opening on August 1, after 515,829 people went to see the movie on August 7.

 

Just a day prior on August 6, “Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days” had surpassed the 6 million mark in record time. It now also holds the record for the fastest film in Korean box office history to reach 7 million moviegoers, beating the previous record of eight days set by “The Admiral: Roaring Currents.” This also means “Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days” has seen the highest number of moviegoers during its opening week at the Korean box office.

 

 

Many are expecting the film to hit 10 million this weekend, given its performance over the past week. It set a new record on opening day and brought in over 1 million moviegoers every day for the first five consecutive days, with August 4 seeing a record number of 1,466,416 people.

 

Many are also waiting to see if it can also become the most successful film in Korean box office history in terms of attendance. “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” currently holds the title at 17,615,314 moviegoers.

Joo Ji Hoon In Talks To Lead New MBC Drama Based On Webtoon Series

Actor Joo Ji Hoon may be returning to the small screen soon!

It was reported on August 8 that the actor was slated to lead the upcoming MBC Monday-Tuesday drama “Item” (tentative title). It was added that the drama is scheduled to begin filming this year and air in early 2019.

His agency KeyEast was reached for comment and a source from the agency confirmed that Joo Ji Hoon had been contacted about the drama. However, they emphasized that nothing had been confirmed yet as they added, “It is one of the offers he is currently looking over.”

“Item” is based on a webtoon series of the same name and is set to be a mystery fantasy drama following the story of a police profiler and a prosecutor as they attempt to uncover the secrets behind objects that have special powers of protection. If Joo Ji Hoon accepts the offer, he will play the leading role of prosecutor Kang Gon. The character is a whistleblower who files a report on the corruption in his department and gets swept up by fate when he participates in a case involving items with special powers.

The drama will be produced by Huayi Brothers and will be written by screenwriter Jung Yi Do, who also wrote OCN’s “Save Me.”
