Ep. 24 (Final Episode) - That Which I Dreamed / What I Dreamed Of

Cha Dol has been dragged to Qing as a prisoner of war.

Iljimae wakes up...the war has already ended. The Qing army reached Hanyang in ten days. The Joseon king surrendered to Qing and bowed three times before the emperor.

Wol Hee had the baby and plans to go back to her Namchon house, since she doesn't have to live in hiding anymore. There, she can raise the child, and listen for news of Iljimae from the prisoners of war who are slowly returning home.

Yeol Gong gives Wol Hee the ornament that Iljimae's mother had given Geol Chi all those years ago and tells her to buy some clothes for the baby.

Wol Hee and Geol Chi return to Namchon, but there's still no news of Iljimae. Wol Hee is confident that he's still alive.

In Qing, a father tries to buy his daughter's freedom, but the price is suddenly raised from 300 to 500 nyang, and she's sold off as a slave. Iljimae defeats her captors and returns her to her father.

Lee Myung tells Iljimae of the Crown Prince So Hyun's wish to meet him. (So Hyun is a hostage of Qing.)

So Hyun asks Iljimae to help sneak the Joseon commoners across the border to Joseon.

Among the group are Dal Rae and Gak Soo (the children of the man who owed the casino boss money). Dal Rae recognizes Iljimae as the injured man they helped in the mountains.

The bookseller has a new book but no paper to transcribe copies. The paper makers have been killed or dragged off to Qing.

Wol Hee sees Dal Rae and Gak Soo in the market and takes them in. Their house burned down in the war.

Bae Seon Dal went to Qing to look for Cha Dol.

WH tells Yeol Gong she's going to start a paper-making business. It's a lot of work, but she assures him she's got plenty of workers. The problem is knowing the technique, so she asks Yeol Gong to teach her how to make paper. She also continues her transcribing work.

WH writes a letter and places it in the secret hiding spot where she keeps her house key.

Cha Dol is a slave to a restaurant owner. An exhausted Bae Seon Dal finally finds him.

BSD is ill, and he knew this before leaving Joseon, but he went to find Cha Dol and gives him his last bequest. He shows Cha Dol the papers for Cha Dol's adoption as his son. He also entrusts Cha Dol to finish the Story of Iljimae. BSD tells Cha Dol not to cry. A person comes...then eventually goes. He's fortunate to have had two precious people in his life - Cha Dol and Iljimae.

WH's paper-making business is doing well. The workers, who are prisoners of war who have returned from Qing, gain strength from having hope for survival once again. Geol Chi suspects that the person who helped the workers return to Joseon was Iljimae.

Dal Rae tells WH that the man who rescued them has a scar on his face. He's the same man that rescued the other woman, too.

In Qing, more Joseon commoners are locked up in a room so that they can't be rescued. Iljimae frees them.

Cha Dol meets Iljimae. BSD had visited there but was unable to meet with Iljimae because he was out on the border helping the commoners. Cha Dol tells IJM of BSD's death...and that WH bore him a son.

Yang Po finds Iljimae at the river. Soon after IJM left, the war began, and Yang Po mobilized with the troops. Many prisoners of war were captured, but many people were also killed. Yang Po could no longer bring himself to kill his opponents for his own survival. Then, he heard about someone returning prisoners of war to Joseon, and he knew it was Iljimae.

Time passes.

WH sees the Story of Iljimae brought to the bookstore by Cha Dol. He gives her a copy.

WH reads the story to Yeong Yi and Geol Chi. At the part where WH sees the rainbow, and Iljimae returns to see her, Wol Hee can no longer read any further. Overcome with emotion, she goes outside and cries. :tears:

Iljimae helps more people across the border. Wang Hweng Bo arrives at the border...he's there especially to catch Iljimae. Iljimae tells WHB that he cannot catch him and warns him not to get in his way. IJM starts walking away, and WHB orders the drums to start...but they don't stop IJM.

IJM and Joseon have endured an even bigger wound from Qing, so his old wound is forgotten.

WHB tells IJM that the Emperor is ill and wants to meet him.

Huang Taiji wants IJM to return the sword that IJM took. It's been passed down from the first founder of his dynasty. He's been using a fake sword in its place, since it was stolen, but before he dies he must have the real one for his son to succeed the throne.

Iljimae agrees to exchange the for the freedom of the Joseon prisoners of war. Huang Taiji agrees as long as their deal is kept secret. IJM informs Huang Taiji that the sword was never taken out of the palace. It's been hidden in the ceiling all along.

WHB is curious to know what transpired with the Emperor. Iljimae tells WHB it's not his concern and tells him not to follow him again.

The bookstore owner tells Wol Hee that Ming surrendered to Qing.

Crown Prince So Hyun talks to IJM about the round globe and how they used to think the world was flat.

So Hyun and the prisoners of war are free to return to Joseon. So Hyun tells Iljimae - Let's return together and create a new world. (But So Hyun dies shortly after his return to Joseon.)

Wol Hee, Geol Chi, and Yong Yi wait at the city gate as the people return from Qing, but Iljimae still hasn't arrived.

Iljimae goes to the Namchon house and sees that it's locked. He retrieves the key from the secret hiding spot...along with WH's letter. She wonders where he is and even though he's not there, she can feel his presence and misses him.

Yeong Yi returns home. Iljimae asks the boy if he knows who he is. He says his mother told him that the man who reads that letter is his father. IJM says he's grown a lot, apologizes for not being there to watch him grow, and asks his forgiveness.

IJM brings his son to WH, and they meet with a rainbow in the distance. :D

WH: You've returned.

IJM: Yes, I've returned.

Wol Hee wakes up and finds that IJM is sitting outside. IJM says he had a dream. It was an unfamiliar world. It was night, but lights shone brightly. There were houses as far as one could see, and the people wore different clothes. It felt like a world that hasn't come about yet. WH asks 100 or 200 years? He says it seemed like even further than that. Even then, he was on the rooftops...as though his work is not finished. WH says it's sounds sad, if even then, there is still his work to be done. But she tells him not to worry. If it's that far away, there will come a time when the world doesn't need Iljimae.

Narrator: In the end, Kim Ja Jeom could not give up his ambitions and eventually was beheaded and dismembered as a criminal.

Like a deep river that flows quietly, Iljimae's name and our dream remains...a dream of a world where we no longer have to call that name.

Ep. 24 (Final Episode) - That Which I Dreamed / What I Dreamed Of

thankyou.gif Thanks so much for our :( final :( summary for this drama... I am glad to have the summary, but in a way it's almost not necessary, because the various scenes speak for themselves regardless of whether one fully understands the dialogue. I really loved the scene with CD and BSD Sad_861.gif and then, especially, later the scene with CD and IJM...when CD told him about his son. love0001.gif And the scene where she discovered the book (and met the grownup CD! :)). And the final scene between WH and IJM... applause.gif So nice...

I sincerely hope that DVDs will be released and sell like crazy and the ROI love will spread... crossfingers.gif

Indeed, the final episode (as well as the entire drama!) speaks for itself. :D

As jojo has mentioned, the writer has penned the script tremendously well.

I love the way Wol Hee reads Iljimae's story and tears up, unable to go further, at the part where she saw the rainbow (meaning she would meet someone she would be glad to see)...and then, Wol Hee and Iljimae are reunited under a rainbow.

Everything is woven together into this incredible tapestry. It's just amazing!

For those of you who have watched Strongest Chil Woo, Prince So Hyun is the same prince who returned from Joseon and was (allegedly) murdered by his father because his new-world views were deemed too radical.

Also in eps.23 didn`t the trio Jin Sun Mi tip that chinese man (i think his some kind of Chinese palace guard/general??) about IJM who might be breaking into Chinese palace??The same trio who`ve been working with Joseon contact in China, i forgot his name...i`m confused??

The trio gave the security guard/official false information, so that he would catch Wang Hweng Bo thinking he was Iljimae, and then the guards would be distracted from the real Iljimae sneaking into the palace.

By the way, i`ve mean to ask anyone here, what is the meaning uri sallam that Hwang Heng Bo always said?? :D

Wang Hweng Bo speaks Korean in a very funny (and incorrect) way. Instead of using the pronoun, "I," he speaks of himself in the third person and says "my/our person." Even the way he pronounces sallam (should be sa ram) is incorrect. :P

He also always ends his sentences with "hae" which is the verb "do."

Hjkomo, thanks a lot!! it`s clear a lot of my questions...Wang Hweng Bo sure is a very funny man  and flexible legs too!

When i read the recap eps 24 i was listening to OST score version, i`m feeling sad again reading BSD and CD...again too many dying scenes in this drama...and the songs are very goood!!

If Prince SH is dead after he cameback so i guess IJM still has a lot of works to do. And it might be a little difficult now because he has a little son..it`s surely be interesting if they make sequel :P ( I wish!!)

Hi, kitty99 ~ I'm glad you enjoyed the thread but sorry you weren't active with us during the drama...like the rest of us, you'll be able to re-watch and get even more out of ROI when the subs are done. It takes time, of course, but they'll be worth waiting for! ;)

sunglasses2.gif

Thanks for the welcome! As long as the show is being subbed, I will wait patiently for it. I wished I had known that this series was on, so that I could be active too, but oh well, it is still nice to read it. Thanks hjkomo for all the episode summaries. It makes watching the show so much easier without the subs. I'm quite sad that this show didn't get to have higher ratings because I enjoy the show a lot even though I don't know what they were talking about. I think it should get higher ratings. Seeing that the ratings were so low makes me really sad. For one thing, I really loved how the main couple was always together, even in recent times. I guess the PD was really trying to show that Wol Hee is Iljimae's destined lover, they still meet in recent times too. I was kind of hoping that it showed them together, but I guess it kinds of shows it by seeing Wol Hee (recent) taking pictures of Iljimae (recent). I also really liked how the ending showed the beginning of Ep. 1. I didn't even know that until I watched Ep. 1. I was wondering who that person was at the end. After watching the first episode, I understood it. Yea, the first episode was confusing because I guess they were trying to show what those books sitting on the desk was talking about by giving us sort of an overview of the show. But, it was okay because I got what they were trying to do at the end of the episode.

Sorry if comparing is not allowed, but I just wanted to say one thing. I really like Iljimae's story and as much as I like Jun Ki's version of the show, there was one thing that got me annoyed and that was the fact that Iljimae didn't really get to be with any of the two ladies in the show. I really wanted to see Eun Chae and Iljimae together, but I got so disappointed when it came to the end and Eun Chae didn't even know who Iljimae was. I love this version because the main couple is always together. Their scenes are so sweet which made me love this version fo Iljimae so much.

I thought Iljimae was like supposed to just a name and the person is supposed to have a real name, I was so confused when I found out that that person's real name is Iljimae. Then, I thought of how he can walk around in public without getting caught, but I guess as long as no one knows who he is, then it was fine? I'm still confused as to why the show is named The Return of Iljimae though. Is it supposed to mean that he got sent to Qing as a baby and now he is back in his own city? I don't know.

Anyways, I really love this show and I have watched certain parts way more than 10 times. I don't even pay attention to the ratings anymore because to me it means nothing. As long as the show is good, I will love it and this one is excellent. So much emotions, so much drama, and so much love. Oh, I love it so much!!!

hi kitty99! Yeah me too! i also curious why his real name is Il Ji Mae, not an alias. As it`ve been said by many characters on the drama (Wol Hee&the girl whose father almost been framed by his collegue) that IJM`s name is unusual, so not many people have that name. But i guess on those days they don`t have ID card  Also he don`t go around telling everyone his name, so i think it`s possible.

About why the title Return of IJM, i guess because a part from the future scenes, the drama began with IJM return from Japan (and killing Bulgasari-the giant)..That`s my interpretation, anyone fill free to correct it...

I'm still confused as to why the show is named The Return of Iljimae though. Is it supposed to mean that he got sent to Qing as a baby and now he is back in his own city? I don't know.

The theme of Return of Iljimae (or, as I explained at the start of the drama - Iljimae, who has returned) is prevalent throughout the drama, and the scriptwriter has done an excellent job of interweaving this theme across the span of the story. Iljimae - who returns to his homeland, to his mother, to his woman... (There are so many references to his "return" - both literally and figuratively.)

But if you're specifically looking at the first and last episodes, the theme is presented as follows:

Ep.1 - Iljimae has returned to Hanyang after a 3-year absence. This is where the present time/tense of the story begins.

Ep.24 - Iljimae returns to Joseon from Qing...and to Wol Hee (and his son, Yeong Yi).

For those curious about the Dutchman in episode 20 -> Jan Janse Weltevree

http://www.koreanhistoryproject.org/Ket/C14/E1402.htm

By 1631, the royal court learned that Weltevree had an expert's knowledge of firearms and was very skillful in the art of casting cannon with a beautiful finish.
Now that is the name he was spelling! I never rewatched that part of the drama to listen again! I figured he was an actual historical figure in view of what a finely detailed and carefully planned drama ROI is! ;)

Very interesting! Thanks for the research! thumbsup.gif I'm smiling again at what a ham that guy portraying Weltevree was!

Thanks hjkomo for the explaination!! Now I get it!! :P

Thanks cococrust for the Chinese sub links!! I really love Ep. 16 because it really shows how much Iljimae loves Wol Hee after she commit suicide. Not that it is a bad thing, but I'm surprised after falling off that cliff that she can still with barely any bones broken? Or they could have shown her months after she recovered I guess. Either way, it is still cool to see her more than okay after that fall. Anyways, thanks for the link! Now, patiently waiting for the next episode to be subbed.
