Interesting thing about IJ that they show is -
He is actually good at reading emotions and knowing who needs what, BUT just so wrong when he tries to predict something.
How to convince a patients or motivate them, how to comfort them, say right thing to right person - he is probably the best
matchmaking, knowing what one likes and predicting a gift for them , - epic fail - He is my EMMA minus the vanity

And like you pointed out, the possibility that long time friends can turn into lovers. And their (Ju/Rosa) relationship just highlights how smooth that transition can be? They already know each other so well? Their banter is great. Which is why I am on the FlowerGarden canoe. In that Kalgaksu scene (which PD already pointed out was critical), Andrea didn’t need to be asked, but he instinctively passed SHwa a pain relief patch as soon as she massaged her neck. Then she sniffed and he instinctively passed on a tissue (again without being asked). They moved together like a well oiled machine. He was the only person conscious of her needs at that dinner table. He’s the one to complement her.
. He sees her when others don’t. Contrast that with Jang. She is unseen to him. The man who sees Jang for all that she is right from the beginning, is IJ. That’s how I work out ultimate pairings with this duo. They like to pair couples with the same ideals, same values. They don’t pair up couples who put each other down in public. When IJ tried to change SHwa’s eating habits and berate her for buying the wood stove, that was a big hint to me that he wasn’t the one for her. Just like in Reply1988 when JungHwan kept picking on DeokSun for her messy eating, he didn’t get the girl in the end. To work out where the end game is likely to be, I profile the writer and PD to work out what they like and what their world view is. Once you get that down, you’re in a better position to guess at where they are heading with the story. Dramas are their artwork. They use it as a means to convey their own thoughts, convictions and self to the world.
That's an interesting take on rosa and ju. Guess it makes sense - rediscoveing love
JW-Jang : While i am not crazy about any ship, but this one doesn't seem so strong to me. I am quite lost why so many people are on this ship. I don't know, but just can't see it!
JW-Shwa: Definite possibility (might be my bias since i know SHwa's love interest is going to be amongst the friends). Post ep 1 bereavement scene (Ju asked them how come no romantic entanglements amongst them and the way each looks at whoever is so TELLING), i have JW-Shwa at the back of my mind (atleast JW likes Shwa is definitely true) , BUT, until they show JW was there on the cancer result day - i will continue goading over my make believe couple JW-SH

What writers want - i am not sure of that consistency in approach because 97 subverts all the themes they showed in 88. I think it depends - what story, which romance, which personality writer wants to write about. if it were about two headstrong people then public embarrassment might add to falling in love.. lol..
However, what is important is that in context of the story being told, one understands the character's personality and finds the best match
For me, SHwa is academically excellent, was popular amongst boys, has always been a confident woman, does not shy away from chasing whatever she wants, and is socially not awkward ( this is what we have seen in flashback too)
Now, if she were not popular amongst boys (in college) or harboured plain jane insecurities or was a tortured soul, i would have immediately jumped on IJ-Shwa ship.. BUT that is not the case. She is quite balanced and not a jilted daughter/sister/girl/woman .. none of the soap
So, who would such a character fall for? - someone equally smart (genuinely intelligent), which means academically yes, but also in terms of common sense or perceiving situations quickly and observant (Not juvenile, not stupid - remember she doesn't really like kids.. she likes SPECIFIC kids.. and if uju is 1/3.. she likes maturity)
She is fast paced .. which needs to be balanced by who can slow it down
She is not the soft spoken types.. which means she will get attracted by soft spoken kinds (can neverbe JWan
) ---- if you question why IJ's sister would like JWan given she is not the soft spoken types then there are two reasons - JWan is actually the mellow one in that relationship and so soft , and her environment of military world can't handle a true elegance of speech.. she will find it very amusing
and so on.. so yea, i am just going by the personality ( The one she can look upto given how accomplished she is will be the one who captured her heart back in college)

One thing i am fairly prepared for is that JJS is not getting the Shwa and personally i don't want a romantic arc for him. WHy? Because he is the most famous/priority actor in the group and sthg from very initial reports that came out when they were courting JJS without a script...just gives me this sense that he ain't gonna be the end game (sorry i can't recall why i feel this way).
And with these puns of red roses, i like you, his intense admiration and care for Jhang - i wish drama does not make this romantic. Just not comfortable with mentor-mentee relationship turning sexual (yikes!)

Hmm.. i thought their story is in there to draw a parallel to someone else's story..
but yea..it could be stand alone arc as well since HP is more about friendship unlike family theme of 94 or 88 (97 i don't count because that was this team's 1st attempt and script wise it is simpler)

I asked this before, does anyone have any theories on why we have Rosa-Chairman relationship in this show, instead of mom and dad groups and showing camaraderie amongst them? the sole focus seems to be on childhood friendship.
Does it signify something?

not much time left must be for priesthood vs regular life vs chase after the girl now (but girl is enjoying her life..like all girls are.. i don't see the dire need to chase any girl as if she will go away)
Writing is so b'ful..they maintain consistency in minutest things..
Uju when he wants one more sandwich - he turns to respectful speech - this consistency since ep 1..whenever he needs sthg, he speaks politely
and then GY has to only say, i need one more sandwich and IJ brings it
lol.. like give all the kids in the world to IJ with a strict mommy who balances the equation

One more thing i missed to call out:
SHwa to JW: You love kids. You should get married
JW to SHwa: You also love kids. You should get married
SHwa: Not really. I only like my nephews and Uju
( and let's just agree Uju is a very mature, sensible baby.. kids are not like that .. very rare, very few.. so responsible at this age. I am sure it has not escaped everyone how much baby takes care of his dad too)
Now, what does this tell us?
1. SHwa doesn't really like kids but left an impression on JW that she does
- we haven't seen her with kids, so why does JW feel so?? ( Did we try to impress our crush during college? .. actually to impress any of the 4 guys, route is kids and babies)
2. She likes Uju - that's the kind of personality she likes! OR he is the only other kid she truly knows

She's part and parcel of Jun-wan's arc... his growth as a doctor and a human being.
It's what happens in a cast of thousands.
So, one of the most important dialogues-
When IJ was "selling" his product "GY" .. lol.. that she works the hardest for her patients but doesn't understand how to be sympathetic (and he means it in a good sense)... JW says "I know!"(and positive connotation)
Given, until now we as audience has only seen him get exasperated at GY - be it when she ran after abusive dad (lol JW's reaction was super annoyed), and almost every other incident..
But, under the radar, we get a "I know" - acknowledges her strengths

My reading of the writer from reply series is that she does 180 from previous drama because she expects her audience to read into those "signs"
97 - Girl is confident, not the one who is trying to please - ignores the well educated, old guy she respects even if he was the 1st choice for boyfriend.. went for the one with whom she could be what she wanted to be - childhood trope, girl goes for whom she has known the longest and loves to fuss over/ can fuss over
The one who clearly proposed got rejected
94 - I haven't watched this drama, assuming from the few episodes that I did - girl is not super underconfident, she is pretty but feisty and just angry all the time (plz blame go ara, my only takeaway based on her acting is that she is female underworld fighter)
- ignores soft, sweet boy, blatant about liking the girl, always happy in company, nobody sees him suffer but he suffers.. just absolute cutire pie, and a winner in baseball - and he didn't get the girl but accepts the older man, well educated ---- Childhood trope, girl goes for whom she has known the longest and loves to fuss over

88 - Girl is not confident, inferiority, wanting to please, feel she is always overlooked, and really seeking her importance in lives of people that surround her - she subverted the trope from 94 - who got the girl? - not the typical kdrama hero.. but a motherless, oldest of the lot but because he is quiet he flew under radar, so clear about liking the girl etc etc ---- childhood trope, girl goes for whom she has known the longest and loves to fuss over

So, if teasing has to continue, final choice would be someone who is somehow more of JH's character than Taek's. And i don't mean rough personality but maybe someone who shied away a lot from confessing to SHwa or.. some sorta strong disconnect from Taek, but connect with JH. - lol, all of them have shied away. Except for SH
Will definitely not be the older/mature guy
Question is who is the oldest/maturest
And SH proposed, got rejected, so we are safe

Couple of interesting things happened:
1. "Ouri"
Everytime anyone said "Ouri" it was intimate, and actors in the scene make it a point to address it. It happened 3 or 4 times in ep 10. However, there is only one time that the "ouri" flows under radar - nobody questions it!
That only time is when IJ calls GY "ouri" when him and JW was smoking outside. and JW has no reaction to it (literally director underplays that scene) --- the fact that writer took so much pain to call out "ouri" in every scene it was used, it is weird that she chooses not to call this one out
( EDIT: of course this could be to build up importance of word Ouri in Korean society and supposed to convey to audience that JW would have got affected even though his expressions don't show it because IJ used it for GY OR it just shows how much subconsciously IJ loves (platonically) GY)
2. Another one off case
10 episodes and zero SHwa-JW scenes. But, writer chooses to have a very interesting SHwa-JW scene and showed multiple things-
My precious to you
JW wants to pass on his legacy to SHwa and not to others or SH (who should be his love of this life
) - tells her about daddy long legs and wants her to continue it (a legacy that is most precious to him, he wants to hand it over to her)
We are close
the arm around her and she leaning on him. We have seen SHwa act cute only one other time - when IJ asks her to recite her spell and eat slowly (but that is disciplining), whereas JW-SHwa - that was natural reaction
Also, suddenly they are very close. With no common scenes, or him coming originally with someone else and Shwa would be there or would join later... very very suspicious to get their closeness towards the end of season 1
"Let's get married - JW i dunno, but SHwa's reaction is so bang on.. and it is not non romantic

When mommy says marry someone- SHwa, he does not deny it. Topic changed.

When JW's verse starts, camera straight away brings SHwa in to focus.
Now, this same thing happens once again towards the end, but camera focuses on JWan. But, they can't keep using same trick again and again. However, rewatch the scene... that zoom in is VERY WELL PPANNED
IJ:
- We know he is wrong about every guess (wife affair, sister affair, any love affair) - chances are he is reading JW wrong, but i like GY if she wants to be stuck on JW, then what can we do
- guy is smooth and i can see how popular he must have been back in school. Even boys are in awe of him.
- he loves SHwa. While he does these things for GY but don't get romantic vibes.. their relationship is strictly of a senior-junior, and when you are so fond of your junior that you will go that extra mile (e.g. suits)

Some theories I have for the last couple of episodes:
- I would not be surprised if AJW-JGW became a couple next episode. The pd-writer already tricked us in past episode previews that this couple has a chance only to kill it in the actual episodes but it is actually a mind manipulation so we will not expect it when it comes - haha - or maybe its wishful thinking because I like this couple.
- The LIJ-CSH couple angle will be revealed only during the last episode - a warm open ending for this season. Same with YSH-CMH.
*** I did not finished '94 because of Go Ara. Sorry. I was put off by her acting in some of her previous works. I think I develop a negative bias against her. Sad. But I was still right on the endgame couples.
Agree on never getting sidetracked (except 94 because same reason as yours.. dropped it REAL quick.. so all i know about that series is from what i have read) .. taek was as obvious as anything can be.. and 97 did not even pretend to play husbnad hunting game (alternative was a joke, such a weak plotline)
But writer always has alternatives as red herrings, which is completely missing in JW's case for now. So, true love lines will take some time

they said they are going back to their theme (in between we have had only prison playbook).. and they wanted to include 90s song but those dramas were set in flashback so they could play those songs, but in modern setting the only way they could was if they brought in a band..
Something in their words gives the hint that this is same as reply series

The reason why I'm not sold to Jungwon-Gyeu-wool pairing is bcoz they rub each other wrong. so many times GW's face express sadness and a long face. except in the last ep.... different with SH and Minha's interaction, he also frustrates her but she does get back and assert her position. she's also not afraid to say what she think of him. But with Gyeu-wool who has 13 professors in the palm of her hand, is letting JW make her feel inadequate. Which is somehow feels wrong. If ever they become a couple, she will always be submissive to him. In this day and age of women's power, there's no fun in that kind of relationship.

With Shwa, my take is Junwan. Then Iksun and Capt.Ahn... Aside from one scene, we haven't been shown an Iksun/Chihong interaction as besties. Do they have a good chemistry? I wish to find out.
I hope they will introduce a new FL as a pediatric doctor, someone who also likes children to be paired with Jungwon.
Among them, my fave is Seok-Hyung. His character is what you see/what you get. The more I look at him, the more I realized that he's actually good looking. I am okay whoever he is paired with, Minha is okay but there might be a twist later on like 2nd chance with his ex-wife perhaps

Yea, but on a serious note - i honestly am not sold on any couple, because i do have my reservations.
For e.g.
SHwa - no matter how many clues or whatever, if her end game was not there on the day of cancer result, this will never fly with me (unless at that point in time said lover was not in love)
Jhang - if it were real world, JW-Jhang should not happen. Girls gotta keep her self respect and he has right to his own choices. If they show jealousy immediately, that would be out of character. They should show a strong reason for JW to change his opinion towards a girl. We are talking about a person who has not been in a relationship since 40 years despite girls throwing himself at him - smart girls, intelligent girls, cute girls, girls he already respects e.g. potentially ShWa
Mina - she actually might be the most sorted character on the show
IK- hope she gets over her hurt and truly moves on. She and JWan would work well.

I have no problems with FlowerGarden. Far too many breadcrumbs left by the writer and PD for it to be a plot twist. It’s there but hidden well, just like Jang/IJ. So when it happens (unlikely in S1), it will just be a natural progression for me, not a plot twist. Capt Ahn has confessed and I am waiting for the other Ahn to do the same (maybe next season or in s3). I am patient.
Btw I don’t think Capt Ahn was meeting SHwa for a date. He didn’t even stand up when his date walked in. Too casual. Possibly meeting his NS resident? IS? SHwa maybe her dad? JWan who wants to ask her for advice about IS? Who knows? We’ll see. With writer’s penchant to troll it’s never as it seems.

i feel no one with anyone. And i don't even care who is with whoever. The only things I am confident of are:
1. Main lover boy of the story is going to be JW, because there is too much prominence to his love life - writer goes out of the way to keep him virgin and try to make him the hot cake amongst women - you know the male version of first love who is innocent and pure and the owner will gain in him the PERFECT untouched lover
2. SHwa will definitely find her lover within the group. This is their genre. No exceptions here.
3. I protest, if this does not turn into a BL

PS: Outside of everything, i am noticing how Na Young Suk and his team are paying extra attention to YYS since that coffee variety show (rather when they first came to know that he runs coffee thing for charity).. and his treatment on the show is very different.. i feel and sense the love..
One other thing i am sure of is chilbongie as a character is very very very dear to the writer..
AND I CAN BET MY LIFE that they will not let CHILBONGIE go GIRL/ BOY (if i have my way) free

So, one of the comments from the producer or director in essence conveys that HP is the same genre as reply series. They included band in this series to find a way to incorporate older songs. In reply they could do it because the setting was in a particular year, while this drama has the same arc (the words are such which basically mean same plot.. same approach) but setting is modern

aka all our guesses on people finidng love outside of the group are wrong trajectory.. atleast for SHwa - she is bound to end up with someone within the group

But i think we kinda forget that up until ep 7, it showed that somehow Shyeong treat Shwa differently? In a way that he listened to her and kinda depend on her more?
what do you guys think about Shyeong feeling to Shwa? Is he still like her as a woman now?She is his first love, always remain.. no one can take that position but he knows he has been rejected for good.. and the group is comfortable with that dynamics.. there is no jealousy, no miscommunication, no awkwardness.. she can spend time with SH without feeling uncomfortable, without anyone making fun of them etc
