Been away on a business trip - so many pages to catch up!

Just a thought about the women in Scarlet Heart: Ryeo - aren't they all destroyed one way or the other by the men they love?

Perhaps the ultimate winner is Yeon Hwa - she becomes Queen after marrying Wang So. Wang So only had one queen and one consort unlike Taejo. In SHR, Wang So's heart will never be hers but she gets everything else she wants. Perhaps Wang So doesn't see the point of repeating the same mistake like his father. I am just wondering how So's reaction would be when he finds out Yeon hwa's role in poisoning CP and causing hurt to Soo. Her aim was to kill Soo. Soo's poor health in the later part of the show had a lot to do with the punishment she endured. How devastating it must be for him to know that his mother and wife had everything to do with the demise of his first love.

Soo and So are each other's weakness. Soo's eventual departure from the palace is inevitable. The higher he goes, the less weakness he must have. But So's attachment to Soo is too deep and strong - and he will be tested over and over again. If miscarriage and Chae Ryeong's punishment by death is in the works - So will definitely become cruel and ruthless. Soo and the unborn baby were his hope for a real family that he never had. The depth of his despair at losing both of them - we can only imagine how inconsolable he would be. Again - Soo may not be able to forgive him - but she understands him. However, she will realise that she is the reason he became the ruthless Gwangjong. Leaving So is to preserve the love they had - there was nothing she could do to stop the tragedies. By removing herself from the equation, Soo can longer be his weakness - and he can no longer commit more wrongdoings to avenge for her.

Lady Oh, Queen Yoo, Soo, Chae Ryeong, Lady Hae (to some extent) were all destroyed by the men they love. It is painful to give all your affection to one man but not getting equal affection and commitment in return. Even though So loves Soo more than himself, he will eventually be tied down by his commitment to Goryeo. Soo is freed from the palace in her last days but is still trapped in her love for So. The love eventually wears her down mentally and physically - like a wilted flower.  Their love is a double edged sword - it saved So from a wretched life as wolf-dog but also killed Soo.

I Love how you put things into perspective. Your piece of writing might sum up the love dynamics between So& Soo.

As epic as it would be, their love is also their biggest life tragedy.

Then again...how is this drama supposed to end with a happy note?

I just check the schedule on S-one channel, it says that Scarlet Heart will still air on Monday like usual. I pretty much let these past 5 days just go by swiftly, monday has never been missed like this before.

Hae Soo's is in her lowest low. And here comes a devoted man as she is asking her to wait for him (sounds like a notting hill plea? LOL). She refused. I would understand her on that part because what just happened when she got herself involved in relationships, someone will get hurt. On her POV, because of her , WS was poisoned, and Lady Oh died. How can she possibly accept a proposal for her to wait for that man whom she almost killed?

A year had passed. She had beaten to hard labour, to cynical remarks, she was stigmatized in a place far away worst from what she had perceived an unfair workplace in Damiwon (remember her whining during her first few days). How can she move forward when she is surrounded in a depressing environment? She can't complain . She can't be defensive. Because she think she deserves this punishment because one fine court lady was hanged in order to save her.

And the person who promised to come back, returned. She dismissed the thought, that it is an illusion on her part. But he was there. When she heard his voice--

    She realized he was real.

And immediately hugged her and said he missed her.

Without asking, that man said he missed her.

She was tearing up. And yet she need to restraint her emotion because she almost killed that person hugging him right now.

Back to the river dark of doom scene.

*From I-version* She stated those I missed you ..even so i missed you. But she was not looking at him.

That question looks like a rhetorical question to me. She is interrupting Wook's alibis, and promises . After a year , even if he is closer to her place, he never visited her. He never let his presence known to her. That is why she felt all alone all in that one year (which I really felt her deep sighs, when Wang So hugged her. She almost break down again, but she can't. She can't afford to cause anymore trouble by being herself).

She only looked at WW 's eyes when she asked that question. (while she was looking all the time at Wang So after she pulled herself from his back hug. While Wang So is checking her bruised hands, she was staring at him all the time, teary eyed.) I can feel a mix of bitterness from that. And she said that okay that is enough. At least after all his broken promises /false hopes you missed me. It is more of a resignation from Hae Soo.

Surprisingly, I am not feeling frustrated for Hae Soo because of  her series of rejections to Wang So. My heart aches to this lady who only want to forget for her dilemma in the present but taken back to a more complicated period of which she has no armor but herself. She is loosing the Go Ha Jin as the time passes and yet she is even dragged more into the politics she doesn't want to get involved too. Plus the fact that she has a biggie secret to hide all the time, that she is not Hae Soo. She is Go Ha Jin.

Sorry to cut your great post..

I love you for writing this! I remember feeling heavy with emotion during this scene. She was waiting for him, she thought she was imagining things, but there he was, coming for her.

Another scene that I love was when Soo blurted out everything to So, that she tried to live again, to forget everything by experiencing all the pain from the labor work. She merely breathes and lives by. I'm quite sure that her feeling for Wook is only what's left of her memory. All she needed was closure.

This is our problem. Let's not expect anymore. Let's not expect that SoSoo will have a great romance, let's not expect that Hae Soo will change her personality. If we do that....we won't be disappointed. And we will be ok. :)

"This show isn't something that I can abandon."

    *sigh*

*lying on the bed with eyes open*

    *still heartbroken for So*

Reading some of the latest posts/comments, I thought this episode will be a let down. Contrary to what many feel, I actually like the progress of this episode.

Many are complaining HS is not reciprocating any feelings of WS, but what I kept seeing from their interaction is that she loves him so much. It's the noble idiocy trope, I'd say. She is staying away from him because she loves him. JM clearly told her not to bid farewell to any of the prince when she was leaving Damiwon, but whom did she seek out before leaving? WS. And only him alone. No one else. Even when chancing upon WW on her way back, she didn't call out to him. Then when WS came back to find her, she was very much touched to tears. Although she tried to push him away, but I can't miss seeing her being so concerned and worried when she turned around and saw that he put on his mask again. When WS proposed to her, she was also so touched beyond words, that I think she almost agree to him, but snapped back to "reality" which in her mind is that she is supposed to avoid him and leave him alone. Anyhow, in all their interaction, I can only see suppressed love and longing in her eyes.

Side note: poor HS, is she going to limp her way till the last episode? or when she got transported back to 2016? and how did she manage to climb all those stairs at JM's quarter to find WS? :-P

Yess, she's being a noble idiot fosho! I don't know yet about love, but she obviously cares about him, yet her logic tells her that it's insane to get involved with another prince. Maybe it's just me, but I swear she looked tempted to say yes when So asked her to marry him, but logic pulled her in again.

The noble idiocy game is strong with you, Soo. But give it a rest already, we're all low on energy here.

Interesting observation. Wasn't it the reason why RX wanted to leave the palace? It became a suffocating place for her.

The palace is a reminder of a lot of tragedy for HS. For someone with panic attack being in a place where you have awful memories would be the last place best for your mental and physical health.

It's suffocating yet she will stay there to help a man become a king. It will take a huge amount of strength to stay in a place you hate and I reaaaallyyy wanna believe that she would do that for love. For Wang So.

By the way, thank you @MadraRua for the roll call! Please keep doing it, it makes me feel like a special eclipsee :D

Why is everyone so swooned by the 4th prince?? To me it sounds like he will stalk HAE SOO until she fall in love with him, without respecting or caring about what she went through. She just got heart wrecked by WOOK! Give her a break: "Wang So keeps telling her that she can try to run away but he will follow her" HOW CREEPY IS THAT? It would be nicer if he would be like: "Hey, I know you've had a hard time but I'm there for you if you need a friend to rely on." But his vibe is more like: "Hey, I love you and I will stalk you until you love me back (Plus kill every other man you love that is not me)." And what do you mean with: "He will keep confronting her with reality, until she can face it". What reality? That he loves her and she can do nothing else than accept it? This is not right.
And I agree that WOOK did some shitty and weak decisions but he had no choice by choosing his family over SOO (Would HAE SOO be with somebody who killed his family for her? NO.) SO on the other hand had not as much too loose.... I don't want to downgrade this bravery trying to save HAE SOO but still, his dominance towards her and his cruelty towards others is not normal....

Sorry @bebebisou33 =D please don't take it personally.

Well, it will depend on how you define 'normal' in Goryeo. We can't really apply our modern 'normal' on everyone's action in this drama. Everyone seems to be slightly twisted. The palace residents seem to have the tendency to end others' life if they do not serve to their purposes. So kills, Yo kills, Wook kills, The queen and the king do too. It's survival of the fittest. That's why it's such big deal for Hae Soo when she had those visions of So killing his brothers. It's probably never in her values system to have family members literally kill each other for a mere reason, the throne.

Imposing our moral or modern values while watching this would be tiresome. Oddly, I'm drawn to this drama for its consistency to portray characters that fit both the time and context. No matter how uncomfortable the viewers might feel, those characters and their actions are necessary and relevant.

We're enchanted by Wang So for zillion of reasons. I'm for one, swooned by his resilient and strong character. He's a man who fights for what he desires. Perserverance is sexy.

Anyhow, I guess it's my two cents :)

I'm really sorry for cutting your post short and I have to admit that I am really impressed with the calculations you have done. Although I do have to say, I think that you can't compare the two dramas directly in terms of the minutes that they have since they are different proportionally in terms of length. To make better sense of this:
    As you said:

    35 x 45-minute eps in C-drama = 1575 minutes

    RX accepts 4th prince's feelings ep 22-23 = 1035 minute mark

Percentage drama progressed when RX accepts 4th prince's feelings:

    1035/1575 x 100 = 65.7%

    20 x 60-minute eps in K-drama = 1200 minutes

Number of minutes passed at 65.7%:

    0.675 x 1200 = 810 mins

Number of episodes at 810 mins:

    810/60 = 13.5

Therefore if the C-drama and K-drama were to run proportionally (which they don't), HS would accept WS feelings at ep 13-14
Please don't get me wrong @briseis , I have no means to offend you in fact I am impressed by your calculations and they inspired me to carry that on. I hope you don't misunderstand.

Omo, you guys are the best, you know that rite? This exact calculation is dope

I think, plot wise, the blossoming romance between  So&Soo will take place in eps 13-14 like you predicted, because it will only catapult the forthcoming events. Wook will likely join forces with Yo out of jealousy. The faction of princes will form and the rest is history.

I very much agree with many of eclipses that said HS would refuse So's proposal. After her loss, she'd live like walking on thin ice, she'll hit the lowest of low as a water maid. Marriage might be the last thing on her mind. But her temporary separation with So would make her heart grow fonder. I'd appreciate it if the show takes that route.

Refusal isn't futile when it comes to So. He'll change her mind, I'm sure of it. Eventhough royal marriage might or might not happen, but they'll eventually acknowledge each other's feeling. At this point, what matters most is they can be together.

  9. Right this moment, the scene i'm watching is where So came to his mom's chamber after the temple killing. I gotta give it to the queen Yoo for being such a heartless, cunning mother, her cruel words to him was unbearable. She deliberately said the harsh words to hurt him, to put him down, to make him suffer the worst kind of heartbreak. Watching it, I felt like running to him, hug him tight and tell him that it's never his fault nor his scar's. He's such a poor poor soul.

As a mom myself, I know how it's like to love your kids more than anything that you would switch place in a heartbeat if anything harmful should happen to them. So it comes as puzzling to me that a mother could easily hate her own son and wish him ill.

I'm waiting for the day that So finally ascends the throne and hopefully his evil mother would still be there to watch, in huge regret and shame.

  10. @xiao_baiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii @SizzlerZ many viewers complain about Soo's character development, and here actually we've been presented a character confinement.

Soo's fire continue to fade away and I agree with you both that she probably would never return to who she was 10 episodes ago. But all the pain and heartbreaks would get her more humbled and squared, I'm excited to witness that she'll be able to march through with poise and resilience.

    Hae Soo, fighting!

I'll just interrupt regular programming for a hot minute to share a little Soo-centric post-11 speculative fic I wrote. If y'all have fic reqs that you want me to maybe write, don't hesitate to drop em off here

young enough to try (to build a better life)

The princes come to visit often in the early days. They stand along the road in pairs, pained looks on their polished, always-handsome faces. But the care in their eyes is a reminder of what she’s lost, and when she’s pushed into the water, sputtering as it goes up her nose, its bitter, soapy taste coating the inside of her mouth, Soo wishes they’d leave.

No one talks about the aftermath of war.

    [read here]

I love this! I love how you describe Soo's struggle after Lady Oh's death. I believe, the show might not spend so much time exploring her traumatic days after her tragic loss considering we have only 9 episodes left, but your piece of writing does it very well.

Soo's gradual change of heart toward So would be much more believable and their reunion would be heart wrenching. I even got teary reading that part.

    Please write some more, writer-nim!

Is the scene you're talking about in the 12th ep?

I hope it will happen in eps 12 or 13, the sweet moments should be given after the tears we endured for the last episode right?:sweatingbullets:

The fight for the thrones would commence very soon, they better reward us first with lovey dovey scenes :D

  13. @40somethingahjumma I love your writing, in fact I've enjoyed many of your posts here. They give another perspective to enjoy this drama. I love when a drama also sets as mind-opener to something new, whether it's a new knowledge or a new perspective to an issue.

Eps 11 is all about how women's strength can really go beyond, in both good and evil ways. the queens, YH, Lady Oh, and even Soo, they show incredible strength in various forms. Unlike the princes, despite the opportunities already presented to them on silver platter, the women must fight really hard and often in disguise to get what they desire. And the harsh fact that many modern women still continue to face the same situation, saddens me.

Having said that, that's why Wook's character impresses me less and less because from the start he seems like a guy who doesn't know how to fight for what he wants, he says one thing and act differently. I'm so glad Soo finally sees his true self. No matter what reasons he may give to Soo later (urghh, I hate it that he will sweet-talk her once again) I hope Soo will end things right away, once and for all.
