  1. Dan Oh has always been so damn strong and brave under impossible circumstances but even she falls apart sometimes. And who can blame her? She’s been controlled like a puppet on strings all her life which she’s been living on borrowed time, her life and death depending on whims of a rather unoriginal writer and she even almost lost the boy she’s been falling in love with.

There would be no shame in giving up; however, just when she’s about to accept her fate, Haru comes. It’s fitting that he often appears when Dan Oh is at her weakest, always being there for her to catch her when she falls.

    9V1CllS.jpg

“I would have saved you again thousands and hundreds of times. So don’t say you’re sorry.”

How come that this boy always knows the right way to say while Baek Young basically never does? It’s because they are so inherently different and unlike BY, who always keeps telling DO not to change anything and not to do anything because he fears losing what he has, Haru is willing to risk everything, suffer immeasurable pain and go against the creator himself as long as it would mean saving Dan Oh. BY had so much but he took it all for granted and never showed any real appreciation of it while Haru never had anything to begin with, ONLY EUN DAN OH AND HE WILL NEVER EVER REGRET HER!

    Spoiler

    image

She is so desperate here and afraid and, as always, he is unable to deny her anything. Also, just like with their height difference, even his hands are huge compared to hers. He always towers over her which is why it’s so poignant and symbolic that he kneels in front of her now, becoming the one who is looking up (to her), and spends the whole night kneeling in front of her, holding her hands in his own.

    tFasYGb.jpg

And when he tells her that he’ll never let her go, you realize that in his case never really means NEVER because not even death, his nor hers, managed to stop him before and it will not stop him again.

  2. It’s all true! Look at the angle at which he is clutching the blade - it’s Haru’s right hand that’s holding the sword while he is desperately trying to stop it. And that look of absolute agony and utter despair on his face! He feels pain, terrible pain. Once he learns the full truth about what really happened it’s going to tear him apart!

    8ec3e8a21675f2b0d1ee3b81b614a67ac08e00a2.png

BUT A FACT: We know that when people appear on the stage they can’t move even an inch but HARU ACTUALLY MANAGED TO GET FREE AND RESIST THE WRITER FOR A TIME BY POWER OF SHEER WILL AND HIS LOVE FOR DAN OH! That’s extra AF and damn epic! He might get to see the scar as something that marks him as a terrible person but it’s a proof of his defiance in the face of fate even if he ended up defeated.

  3. I wouldn’t be surprised if Haru suffered from abandonment issues after today. I believe that by the end of this episode he must have developed a deep trauma of watching Dan Oh walk away from him again and again. It’s a trauma he will probably only overcome when he’s 90 years old, holding Dan Oh in his arms as they watch their 6 great-grandchildren and 2 dogs play at their cosy home in the countryside.

  4. I admit I enjoy watching Baek Young as a character - he is intriguing and LJW’s portrayal of him is flawless. It’s a kind of love-hate relationship on my part, though. He makes me angry but when he stops being a jerk and becomes heartfelt he can literally melt and break hearts. He has this huge potential of becoming a second male lead sydrome (and I low-key feel it). However, everytime I’m ready to jump on the BY Redemption Bandwagon, he turns into a complete a**hole.

    ZEq66Y7.jpg

This scene is the perfect example. BY knows Dan Oh is emotionally attached to Haru, that she might even love him, and Haru feels the same. Moreover, he’s started to suspect that Haru is becoming self-aware again and possibly starting to remember everything. BY sets that awful meeting not only because he wants to show Haru that Dan Oh “belongs” to him but also because he wants exact his personal vendetta on them both for making a fool of him, as he believes, not caring in that moment that he’s hurting DO. It’s clear he wants to protect her but when it suits him he doesn’t mind becoming the reason for her pain. Self-absorbed, jealous and holding grudges.

    6m079JF.jpg

Still,  as much as I hate what BY did I get why he did it because the writing and his character development explains it perfectly. He’s never had a support system to teach him better. It’s not an excuse but when he has never known better it only makes sense that he won’t change overnight. He is learning to be a decent human being but it will take time and time is something BY doesn’t have in his relationship with DO. I truly believe that had BY realized that he’s in a comic book sooner and treated DO with the same consideration he is only starting now, she would have fallen in love with him and Haru wouldn’t stand a chance because he entered the story much later. Love is all about timing, and even more so in Dramaland, and Baek Young missed his which he might end up regretting forever.

  5. Extraordinary You - The Official Character Descriptions

The official character descriptions have been released on the English MBC website (and since it’s an official description I’m not putting it under spoiler tags but READ IT AT YOUR OWN RISK) and still might be subjected to change because remember what happened in Empress Ki; however be prepared because it’s a MINDBLOW!

    Eun Dan-oh (Female, 18) / Kim Hye-yoon

    • She is the pretty only daughter of a rich family.
    • She is stuck-up and takes it for granted when people are nice to her. However, born with a weak heart, she always wears a cardio tachometer like others wearing a watch. Nevertheless, she isn’t pessimistic about her life, nor does she pity herself. She has to be calm and can’t let her emotions get the better of her so it doesn’t affects her heart. But there are times when she can’t control her emotions and that’s when she sees a good-looking guy.
    • The moment she lays eyes on Baek Gyeong, she makes up her mind to marry him. Young Dan-oh’s world consisted of Baek Gyeong and the rectangular ceiling which she sees from her hospital bed. No wonder her feelings for Baek Gyeong became so strong. Baek Gyeong thinks Dan-oh is bothering him. He is a well-known Casanova, but Dan-oh only has eyes for him. She had a crush on him for a long time. It becomes more like an obligation to her. However, she doesn’t get butterflies when she sees him anymore, nor does he look handsome. Her mind tells her she likes him, but her heart says otherwise. At one point, she realizes her crush on Baek Gyeong is like homework she has to get done.
    • When she realizes something unexplainable within her has changed, she finds out that she’s a character within a cartoon, and an extra at that. The only comforting thing is that she achieved the ability to see the script that shows the future. She tries to use this ability to write her own story, but once she sees the script, the storyline doesn’t change. One day, she notices the storyline slightly changing and that it has to do with a boy named Haru. She goes after him and finds out that she will be able to change this world with Haru, she feels weird emotions. Her heart starts pounding whenever she sees Haru. It isn’t just a normal fluttering heart. It is totally different from the setting created by the writer. Does she really have to speak, act and go as the writer decides even if it isn’t her destiny? Even if the world doesn’t revolve around her, if she looks at the world from her point of view, she was the center of it.

    rtMzjyC.jpg
    Haru (Male, 18) / Kim Ro-woon (SF9)

    • Before Dan-oh started calling him Haru, he was merely the 13th person in the attendance book. He was an extra in the romantic cartoon “Secret” and didn’t even had a name. One say, Haru wakes up in the world of “Secret”. He is number 13 in class 7 of the junior year at Seuri High School. A few numbers is everything that describes him. He has nothing other than the numbers. Not even a name. No one remembers him and he is just part of the background. Every day is like a nightmare he can’t wake up from. Haru has been instinctively protecting someone. Who is this person? Why is he protecting her? Finally, Haru meets the person he was curious about. Dan-oh was part of his world before he even knew it. Haru immediately felt attracted to Dan-oh. It might be his destiny. After meeting Dan-oh, Haru starts adjusting to life in the cartoon. She is the only person that acknowledged him when not even he remembered anything about himself. Soon, Dan-oh becomes everything to Haru.
    • Haru and Dan-oh are two extras in a cartoon and they have to move according to the storyline of the main characters. Most would hate this situation, as they can’t even meet when they want to. However, Haru thinks Dan-oh, who always finds him and smiles at him, is adorable. He didn’t have a single line, but Dan-oh gave him the gift of a dramatic life. He is merely an extra, but he feels like the protagonist when he is with Dan-oh. He discovers things he didn’t know about himself when he is with her. Haru’s only wish is to live happily ever after with Dan-oh.
    • However, Haru faces the past he had forgotten about. He met Dan-oh in a different "Secret”. He couldn’t defy the writer and killed the woman he loved with his hands. He hoped to meet Dan-oh in a different story and lived through several lives. Haru makes up his mind. He decided to do everything to protect Dan-oh wherever and whenever, even if it means he has to die.

    zbX8ugg.jpg
    Baek Gyeong (Male, 18) / Lee Jae-wook

    • Supporting role in “Secret”, 3rd most popular student at Seuri High School
    • He is Dan-oh’s crush for a decade and her fiancé. He is also officially known as Seuri High School’s Casanova. He is rude and audacious, but always has girls chasing after him because of his aura and looks. He never loved or cared about anyone, nor does he plans to. He can’t stand seeing someone he cares about leaving him. Baek-Gyung’s mom died a long time ago from an illness. After experiencing his mother’s death, he hates everything related to illnesses.
    • Baek Gyeong was raised by a father that puts money first. His father used his only son to make money. Knowing how Dan-oh felt about Baek Gyeong since she was little, Baek Gyeong’s father betrothed him to her to strengthen his position as a business partner. He feels helpless, as his father doesn’t treat him as a son, but as a business measure. He can’t go against his father’s will, but doesn’t want to be obedient. That’s why he picks on Dan-oh and ignores her even when he knows how she feels.
    • However, Bae Gyung finds himself thinking about Dan-oh. She is the only person in the world that truly likes him. When he sees Dan-oh in the hospital, he is worried she’ll leave him like his mother did. One day, Dan-oh suddenly seems weird. She still says she likes him, but it doesn’t seem like she feels the way she did before. Because of Dan-oh’s weird behavior, Baek Gyeong develops an ego and realizes that he is just a supporting role to Oh Nam-joo. The girl he was afraid to lose, is interested in someone else, a boy that doesn’t even have a name. Using the fact that he is the important character in the cartoon, he comes between Dan-oh and Haru, trying to keep Dan-oh by his side. He feels painful to see Dan-oh becoming colder every time he tries. He decides he has to be with Dan-oh in this world. If he can’t have her, no one can. He will do everything he can to keep her beside him.

    QUY8LNJ.jpg
    Lee Do-hwa (Male, 18) / Jeong Geon-ju

    • 2nd most important character of “Secret”, 2nd most popular student at Seuri High School
    • He is the second most popular of the A4 and was always best friends with Nam-joo. He lacks 5% in everything compared to Nam-joo. Outgoing and friendly, he gets along with everyone. He likes to play soccer or basketball with his classmates. He doesn’t worry about much and is happy most of the time. He looks carefree and as if he doesn’t take anything seriously, but is secretly depressed. No one knows about his loneliness and sadness. No one cares to know about it. They like the bright and goofy side of Do-hwa. However, someone catches him with an expressionless face. He runs into the new kid in school Yeo Joo-da on the rooftop of their school.
    • Come to think of it, Joo-da became part of every moment of his life since then and he becomes attracted to her. He likes her, but just watches her from afar when she is with Nam-joo. He is worried she will fall for Nam-joo. He needs to make a move! However, he finds himself doing nothing other than watching her from afar and comforting her, and he is disappointed with himself. Something is wrong, but he doesn’t know what.
    • Dan-oh is the one who helps Do-hwa answer this question. He is in a cartoon world and he has an ego unlike the other characters. He had been moving according to the will of the writer and played the role of a supporting character that has a crush on Joo-da. But he ended up really liking her. Is this part of the setting, or are these feelings of his own?
    • With the help of Dan-oh, who can see the future, he decides to try his best to make the relationship work. He hopes he can end up like Dan-oh and Haru.

    Oh Nam-joo (Male, 18) / Kim Young-dae

    • Leading male character of “Secret”, the most popular boy at Seuri High School
    • He is the most popular boy at Seuri High School and the center of A4. His father is Oh Jae Beol, a painter, designer and CEO of a clothing brand and his mother is Oh Ah Reum, an actress. He is a second generation chaebol of the global fashion company “Seline”. He is 187cm tall, good-looking, smart enough to get the highest grades in Korea, and never lost a fight. The compliment he gets most often is that he is good-looking. He knows he is a catch and arrogant. He is the type of boy you’d see in a drama.
    • He also has something that pains him like all children of chaebol families. Mixing colors and elaborate designs are the identity of Seline. However, all he sees is black and white. He has total color blindness. It is a critical flaw for an owner of a fashion company. This is his only flaw and his secret.
    • One day, Nam-joo sees color. It was when he bumped into Joo-da. He thinks he saw color. Could he have been mistaken? Nam-joo wants to get to know Joo-da better, but she doesn’t show any interest in him. She’s the first to show no interest in him and that’s when he starts picking on her. He also achieved a powerful ability. He’s become Joo-da’s GPS and shows up wherever she goes, especially when she needs help. He isn’t interested in other girls, but he is nice to Joo-da. Who knew a second generation chaebol that lacks nothing would fall for an ordinary girl like Joo-da?
    • Like any romantic cartoon, they end up learning about their feelings for each other after many twists and turns. Nam-joo doesn’t notice the sad face when she sees Do-hwa. He is caught within the setting of the cartoon, but he plans to be happy. At the end of the cartoon, he will “live happily ever after”.

    Yeo Joo-da (Female, 18) / Lee Na-eun

    • Leading female character of “Secret”, the new kid at Seuri High School
    • Joo-da is the typical heroine of a romantic cartoon. She is poor, but pretty and sweet. She had all kinds of part-time jobs because of her family’s financial circumstances. She was chosen for the CSR business of the global company Seline and is admitted to Seuri High School. Right from the start, school life wasn’t easy, but she is always smiling with positive attitude.
    • She wanted to have a quiet school life, but a boy picks on her, asking her to pay for dry cleaning just because she accidently ran into him. The boy is Oh Nam-joo, the most popular boy at school. On the other hand, there is a boy that is like her guardian angel, showing up and helping her whenever she is in a tough situation. It’s Lee Do-hwa, the second most popular boy at school. Joo-da always courageously stands up for justice, but becomes quiet when she is misunderstood. Sae Mi gets jealous to Nam-joo and starts telling people about Nam-joo’s vulnerable point and that Joo-da spread the rumor. All she had to do was say no when Nam-joo asked if she really is behind it. However, Joo-da doesn’t say anything. No wonder Nam-joo gets the wrong idea. In a nutshell, Joo-da is the typical heroine of a drama.
    • Then what is Joo-da like outside of the cartoon? When Joo-da develops an ego, she realizes how Nam-joo and Do-hwa feel about her. She was nice and just because that was the setting of her character. The real Joo-da is shrewd, clever and quick at making decisions that benefits her. The cartoon world revolves around Joo-da. She was planning to go back and forth between the two boys and end up with Nam-joo until Dan-oh messed with the storyline.
    • Her love story with the male protagonist and the spotlight that was focused on Joo-da have all changed. She becomes sensitive, greedy and easily angered. She feels uncomfortable when Do-hwa, who is merely a supporting character, tells her he is interested in her, and is outrageous when Dan-oh, an extra, struggles to make changes. How dare an extra mess with her story! This world cannot be ruptured. Joo-da has to be the one and only heroine of the cartoon “Secret”.
    • Joo-da tries everything to make the story go back to how it should have been when she faces a crisis. She starts showing interest in Do-hwa. She has to get with the main character to play the leading female role. Will she give up on her feelings and end the story with a happy ending or follow her heart as the real Joo-da, not a character of “Secret”?

Jin Mi-chae (Male, Age unknown) / Lee Tae-ri

    • The 4th member of Seuri High School’s A4.
    • His age, nationality, background and name are kept a secret. He isn’t even a student at the high school, but became one of the A4 because of his good looks. He always shows up when Jin Mi-chae, sautéed dried squid, is served at the school cafeteria and thus called “Jin Mi-chae fairy”. He is the closest character to the writer and the most secretive.
    • Unlike his bright expression and tone, he is pessimistic. He knows everything, but isn’t interesting in anything. He is the first to have an ego within the world of “Secret”. He knows many things as if he’s experienced other world and tells other about it. If the writer shows rebirth as love, he believes the writer loves him very much. He’s been in several of the writer’s works. However, when he sees Soo Hyang, a transfer student, he realizes he’s being punished in the worst way, not being loved.

  6. It’s always been only Dan Oh for Haru since the moment he can remember. And her name was actually his first word ever. She’s been the literal and figurative center of his universe from the very beginning. Frankly, I’m even afraid to even guess for how long Haru’s been self-aware because that would mean possibly years of utter desolation and loneliness.

    daQgWPk.jpg

I love that we got to see Haru’s POV of their previous encounters this week and that they were even more magical and memorable for him than for her to the point where he even drew the flowers on her umbrella. At first, I thought that the reason why Haru draws might be because he’s somehow connected to the writer or he used to draw in his past (possibly in different webtoon), which is partly true, the whole truth behind his drawing is much more heartbreaking - he draws because he wants to learn who he is, who she is and because he does not want to ever forget her. And he keeps all those drawings in this little alcove which can’t be describe as anything but a temple where Haru worships the altar of Dan Oh’s awesomeness.

    P2a60oA.jpg

There are all these barely noticeably details and the one which gutted me the most was the fact that the desk Haru picked out for himself and where he’s been sitting the whole time and where he so often thought about Dan Oh is the very desk where she sat when he first approached her! My heart stay still!

  7. THE EXTRA SQUAD IS BASICALLY THE AWESOMEST THING THAT HAS EVER AWESOMED!

    tumblr_pzhvw4MABX1s8t96qo1_540.png

I want them to stage a coup d'état and overthrow the writer, wait… this is exactly what they’ve been doing in the shadows - basically planning a revolution, prepared to do whatever is neccesary to take control of their lives; their oddball trio of losers adding some extra chaos and disorder to the predictable world of the webtoon.

    tumblr_pzhvw4MABX1s8t96qo5_540.png

It’s literally them against the whole universe and its creator. Plus I dig how Dan Oh has so naturally become the head of this operation and the boys follow whatever she says obediently like two cute puppies. She is their general and she’s barging foward with that boundless energy of hers. It’s hard not to fall in love with her.

  8. The latest episode almost confirmed the theory that Haru used to be a character from a previous historical webtoon and that he kept his personality traits in Secret. Furthermore, it appears that that some objects had been transferred as well - be it the antique ornament, flowers,… The comic “Flower” has that very same flower on its cover and now we can see its contents, including historical buildings and men with swords (that scar made me always think about Haru getting hurt after catching a sword or a dagger in his hand which is a trope you see often in sageuk); and one of the man is saying exactly the same line Haru told JMC. Did he already have the same identity issues in the previous comic or did his previous storyline include a birth secret?

    tumblr_pzjknyVW6u1s8t96qo2_540.png

It’ll be interesting to learn who Haru used to be because you only have to look at him to realize he is a male lead material, something even Do Hwa noted when he first met him. Haru is tall and muscular, with insane physicality and reflexes. He saved DO several times, easily dodged the ball from BY, defeated BY in tennis and threw him into the swimming pool without any problems. On the other hand, he has amazing artistic talents which would suggest an educated warrior with noble blood, perhaps.

  9. OMG! Haru is using that comic book to basically track and stalk Dan Oh, isn’t he?! The dress-up scene with SM clearly took place on the stage so Haru must have read the whole thing and rushed to the cinema because it’s obvious he is deliberately doing everything SM told Dan Oh to do with BY and more, enjoying every single second of it. He simply couldn’t bear if she did something like that with her “fiancé”. The boy isn’t as hapless and innocent as he originally seemed and I’m all for it.

    cwpvmAG.jpg

“Kyung was acting a bit weird.”

At first, I found Haru’s explanation strange, considering that standing DO up is exactly something you would expect BY to do; however, then I realized that Haru didn’t come because he thought BY wouldn’t show up but because he was afraid he would. He must have noticed all those strange questions and reactions from BY and suspected that BY might be gaining his self-awareness.

    P5No29T.jpg

On a side note, I dig that they are watching Spiderman which is also a live-action adaptation of a comic, just like Extraordinary You.

  10. If someone told me two weeks ago that I’d be obsessing over a high school kdrama I would tell them they are crazy but here I am irrevocably in love with Extra(-)ordinary You. I guess it must have been a love at first sight ;-)

    inQVCWk.jpg

It’s been an eternity since I loved a high school drama. To me, most of them are boring because I’ve already seen those tropes million times over and a drama needs a truly extraordinary execution to sell them to me. It’s funny because high school dramas are usually the ones you begin with when starting to watch Asian shows and you think how awesome they are; however, after some time they start to bore you because they rarely bring anything new to the table. It’s the result of watching too many dramas for too many years. And Extraordinary You is exactly fashioned for people like that - people who know every trope in the book and get all the references and puns making fun of the stereo(typical) plot of romantic dramas.

    qBbTX0Q.jpg

The show is an epic package of brilliant meta, gripping storytelling, top-notch editing, inspired directing, perfect music and amazing acting. Ironically, it’s based on a webtoon July Found by Chance which I refuse to read because after a long time I have only a very vague idea where the story is going and I want to keep it that way (OK, I admit I read the chapters which coincide with the first two episodes and I prefer the drama version and find it superior, anyway). And on top all of that there is the female extra Eun Dan Oh who just might be one of the best high school female leads I have ever seen, perfectly portrayed Kim Hye Yoon. She is basically a walking meme and each of her reaction is a mood. To sum it all up in one word, the show is simply EXTRAORDINARY.

  11. Well, I would still prefer that unreleased handkerchief Moon Lovers alternate ending but I take this too. I'm really curious whether it will be some ML meta (I mean forget that there is so much ML meta already in the drama), Hong Sisters are known for some awesome cameos but also for some utterly wasted and forgettable (like JGS in Hwayugi). So fingers crossed we get the former.

  12. 3 hours ago, ladysaotome said:

I thought they explained this with the story about him stopping the smoke from the mountains and how he did it for attention, not for humankind's sake, and that's why he was punished and the humans didn't care?

I think it says something about how much this drama resonated with people (and how empty the ending left us) that this thread is still going strong over a week after the finale aired.

The betrayal was such a huge motivation for OG, explaining why he was the way he was, that it deserved more than a one passing mention. There should have been flashbacks and more depth and more detail. Also, it's inconsistent and contradictory to what was mentioned about it previously - it was said that OG was betrayed by A HUMAN (one specific) not humans - also OG never adressed it whenever SM asked; it also doesn't explain  why OG was so affected by the mermaid story. The thing is that throughout the whole story it was shown that this betrayal hurt him deeply, so much that it created a lasting disdain for humans in him. The disdain and hurt was deep but then MW said that OG didn't do it because he cared for humans so logically their betrayal shouldn't have hurt him much. However, the mermaid tale and also how he advises BJ to seek revenge and how he despises humans show that he was hurt. You can get hurt only when you care. Even OG himself said that himself. Therefore this is a huge writing mistake on Hong Sisters' part. Finally, your character mainstory isn't something you mention in the last episode, at a point where it doesn't even matter anymore, like a by-the-way.

  13. One of the biggest regrets about Hwayugi and its flaws is that the viewers never learned more about Son Oh Gong’s backstory, specifically his history with humans. Till the end, it remained a hearsay just like many other things mentioned in the drama. However, the human’s betrayal was probably the most intriguing mystery surrounding him and also an explanation why Oh Gong turned out to be the way he had, why he held humans in such a huge contempt.

    tumblr_p5e77tkkjA1s8t96qo1_540.png

Futhermore, he has suffered for it dearly - being tormented, burned, imprisoned for almost a 1,000 years,… - that’s not something a writer should leave without adressing. Considering that OG has always been evasive about the reason for his punishment in front of SM, the experience must have affected and hurt him deeply.

    tumblr_p5e77tkkjA1s8t96qo3_540.png

So what happened? How terrible it must have been to make OG lose all trust in humans forever? Who betrayed him - a man or a woman? Did OG care for that person? Did he love him/her? It would explain so much including why his m.o. has always been to seek revenge and why he was so affected by the episode with the mermaid. Not only do we need a Hwayugi sequel, we also need a Hwayugi prequel. SON OH GONG: THE BEGINNING.
