The protector is probably immortal - I think that there is a possibility that the protector might have failed to save the previous SM or the SM died because she/he was a mortal. I think a good spin on the story would be if the protector was a woman while the previous SM a man.
I think the translantion of the text preview might be slightly incorrect by choosing do indentify the child with the pronoun "him" so there is still no confirmation whether the child is male or female.

Hwayugi Ep.16 Text Preview
Oh Gong, who dreams of a baby born in a countryside clinic where many people die of epidemic, finds a mysterious baby in front of Sureumdong.
Feeling the revelation that someone has called him, Oh Gong goes to find the clinic he saw in his dream. There, he meets the protector egret of the previous Sam Jang. The egret tells Oh Gong that Sunmi was born with the fate of Sam Jang, and he was designated by the heavens to be her guardian.

This is the first time we see the Great Sage truly, utterly helpless and nothing can be worse for an almighty deity like him like helplessness to protect the person he loves. It shows how far has Oh Gong come from the first time we met him.
When he started his personal journey he couldn’t even comprehend the concept of desperation and when SM told him she waited for him desperately he gave her a curious, baffled look as if he didn’t even know the meaning of such a word because, in fact, he didn’t.
However, now he knows, now he knows the very depth of desperation as he is holding Seon Mi’s lifeless body in his arms, desperately calling her name and begging her to call him, imploring her to come back to him.

I wonder what jokes did they make before this bed scene and how shy they are before making this scene
I'm not surprised that even LSG was shy because his only romantic scene involving a bed scene was the one in King 2 Hearts and this is how it literally went frame by frame. It was so tame even for kdrama that in 2012 when it was airing the fandom wasn't 100% sure that the OTP slept together until the news of miscarrige broke out on TV two episodes later. This "bed" scene in Hwayugi, even if it won't go all the way, is on a completely different level.

The Priestess is such a great choice as SM’s and OG’s foe because she has so much in common with them (like OG she was betrayed by a human and imprisoned for 1 000 years) and unlike the other enemies which were demons she’s originally a human and despite of it she is the most powerful and dangerous from all the enemies the OTP has encountered. However, unlike the other demons she knows that SM’s and OG’s greatest weakness is their heart - her humanity makes her superior to the demons. And this is where the similarities with Seon Mi begin: they are both human priestesses who are feared by demons and have sway over human hearts. However, while ASY sees it as a weakness, something that should be used to her advantage and broken, Seon Mi tries to understand it and heal it.
“How could it have been activated by a human’s abilities? It must have been activated by her abilities as Sam Jang of course.”
That’s ASY’s weakness which will eventually become her downfall because she underestimates the human heart and dismisses its powers, just like MW once dismissed the fact that the human JSM could possess powers that could have enchanted a deity like the Great Sage. That’s the very reason why ASY can’t understand how can BJ still be there despite everything.
The showdown between the two priestesses is coming and ASY is already losing because she thinks that Seon Mi real powers are in her blood and corporeal body. She can’t comprehend that a human could be powerful because she lost her humanity a long time ago. This is also a huge slap to all the haters with their misguide notions about what it means to be a powerful priestess - killing demons with supernatural powers, sensing future, doing martial arts,… - like ASY, they don’t understand that Seon Mi’s greatest weapon is her human heart.

Hwayugi is so often compared to Goblin but the show which it truly reminds me of is Inuyasha. There are so many similarities and parallels - weeks ago I compared Oh Gong to Inuyasha in some aspects - and now here are ASY and JSM who are like each other’s distorted reflection in a mirror - just like Kagome and Kikyo used to be with a little hint of Tsubaki thrown it. Both have immense spiritual powers, both are feared by demons, are in a star-crossed relationship, one is jealous of the other’s love,…

The situation with SM locked in the coffin resembles in many ways the time when Oh Gong was got stuck in the wedding picture and SM went to find her younger self in one of the Bookseller’s books. For all his powers, each time Oh Gong was unable to follow her in these different worlds/dimensions. In the first instance, only her call and their contract was powerful enough to allow him entry into the human world; in the second situation, only SM alone had the power to come to him. So is the solution for this new problem the former or the latter, or maybe something entirely different?
What is intriguing here is that while MW identifies SM based on her scent and energy, Oh Gong senses her soul not her energy, body or blood.

ASY wants Oh Gong to protect her because he is the most powerful being and she thinks that possessing SM’s body/blood, thus gaining the ability to control him via his love for SM and the GGG. She wants SM’s and OG’s powers. However, that is her biggest mistake because it wasn’t Seon Mi’s body or Sam Jang’s blood which activated the bracelet and which made Oh Gong fall in love with SM; IT WAS THE HUMAN JIN SEON MI’S POWERS WHICH ACTIVATED IT, IT WAS THE HUMAN JIN SEON MI TO WHO THE GREAT SAGE GAVE HIS HEART WILLINGLY, IT IS THE HUMAN JIN SEON MI WHO OWNS SON OH GONG AND WHO TAMED HIM. IT WAS HER HUMAN SOUL.
“Whether the GGG was activated by Sam Jang’s abilities, or human Jin Seon Mi’s abilities. That’s probably something only Oh Gong knows.” – episode 10
“The Great Sage Son Oh Gong sincerely loves the human Jin Seon Mi.” – episode 14
And even Son Oh Gong himself admits it in his love confession to Seon Mi which is frankly such an epic and satisfying throwback to episode 10 as he, the almighty immortal Monkey King acknowledges that he’s been laid low by love for a human woman.

There have been a lot of comments bashing Seon Mi for being weak, stupid and a damsel in distress after she decided to give up her life to protect Oh Gong; and wishing that the Seon Mi who stood up for herself and defended her right to live in front of Oh Gong in episode 2 would come back. Those comments couldn’t be more wrong because the Seon Mi who lets herself bury alive for Oh Gong’s sake is the same person who fought for her right to live - brave, kind, strong and with a huge capacity for love. It’s really funny how the same people who criticize SM for her sacrifice are squealing, fangirling and swooning about Oh Gong’s willingness to protect her at all cost, even if it the cost was his life. AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT SEON HAS ACTUALLY DONE RIGHT NOW. Therefore saying that SM is weak for sacrificing her life for Oh Gong while praising him for his willingness to risk his life for her is a hypocrisy and misogyny of the highest order.
How epic is that when aware of the truth behind the death bell and facing the same dilemma both Seon Mi and Oh Gong make the same choice?! These two people who have always clinged to their own life take themselves out of the equation and choose to save the other person.
Oh Gong himself admitted to Ma Wang that if he were offered with only one chance to save the person he loves he would take it, no matter how disadvantageous and dangerous for him.
A deity, a demon and a human - they are all susceptible to love and capable of risking and sacrificing their lives for it because true love does not discriminate and doesn’t make a distinction between men, women, demons or even gods.

And it’s such a perfect moment for them to sleep together because the GGG is completely useless and Oh Gong’s love for Seon Mi is real and has been for a long time now and she finally admits to Oh Gong that she loves him and keeps repeating it like a mantra that would keep him with her and protect him forever and kisses him. And he just completely loses it. FINALLY MAKE THOSE DEMIGOD MONKEY BABIES!!!
