  1. I have a feeling that it might be one of those vague endings, where the viewer does not know for sure whether they are together or not. And so there is going to be another round of debates/analysis as to whether whatever was shown means they are together or not. I feel that has been the nature of the show up to now, and it is only fitting that it ends like that.:D At the end we are all going to be in same teams that we were in before namely

A: Father & daughter -brother & sister team (adoption)

    B: Friends but soulmates team

    C: In a relationship team

D: I don't care about all if that..it is just a healing drama team

She gets hit by a car in episode 15 preview?  This is a melodrama and Korean audience viewers love pain?

There was talk of death before the preview. I don't know...my mind is not even going in that direction, they are going to have to surprise me with that one and I deal with the shock then. I just hope the shows ending can live up to my high expectations of it.

About the scenes when Dong Hoon was holding on to his phone after he found out that he was being bugged through it, I don't know but I didn't see it as him holding that phone lovingly in any way.  What I felt was betrayal and a deep sadness.  He actually cried while he was thinking about all the times he thought Lee Ji An just seemed to read his thoughts and feelings, not realizing that she was listening to every word he said and reading every message he sent or received.  And then they showed him remembering what he said to Yoon Hee the night she admitted to the affair.  To me, it seemed like the scene was showing how hurt and confused Dong Hoon was when he realized that Ji An (who had become his pillar, much like what Yoon Hee was to him once) also betrayed him, and to Do Joon Young as well. Even at the movie theater when he was holding on to that phone, before he said her name into it, what I saw on his face was confusion and anger and sadness because he had given his trust to Ji An completely.  His eyes were still shining with tears then, which shows how deeply hurt he was by what she did.  (One can also say that the depth of his hurt is evidence of how deeply he feels for Ji An.  We are, after all, most hurt by those whom we love best.)

I don't think he's at the stage yet where he can forgive Ji An for what she did because he's not yet cognizant of the full picture behind it.  He's only been made aware of the truth by Joon Young because slimy, manipulating bastard that he is, Joon Young wouldn't have any qualms about ruining Ji An in Dong Hoon's eyes.  Anyway, regardless of her change of heart, Ji An in the beginning did have every intention of using him to get the money that she needed from Joon Young.  He was just a means to an end for her then and if she hadn't fallen for him, she would have gone through with the blackmail because she didn't really care one way or the other.  She just needed Joon Young's money.  But as Seo Choon Dae the garbage man said to him previously, "what's so important about the truth?...our hearts aren't ruled by reason after all".  Dong Hoon will process the facts rationally, but ultimately he must decide with his heart on this one.

Well i hope he doesn't find her, if that is the case. Run Ji-AN run!

Edit: My brain is so muddled these days, i don't even have the energy to explain my top comment. Enjoying all the analysis though and the different view points. I don't feel like i'll have much to say till the end of the drama.

Edit 2: Watching the drama while reading the comments here made me appreciate the drama a lot more, primarily  because i would have missed a lot of things watching it through my eyes only. i was literally on my third re-watch of episode 14 that i finally saw DH's tears.

  4. Honestly, if I was in the position of JA I would feel the same way about DH as she does......the things he has done and said on her behalf...girrrrlllll....this man literally fought a man for her, while still defending her..the average person doesn't experience that type of thing, much less someone who has been beaten down by life as much as her. Can you imagine how much something like that would mean to her?

  5. I guessing the writer has a timeline when DH will make the crucial decisions he needs to make. Jung hee waited 20 years? to move on..give the DH a break . If I look on DH's situation rationally, what is the right thing to do? I would have just rolled up in a ball and cried my eyes out. We are flawed as humans, and sometime watching other people being flawed we forget or own flaws. What would we do if we were in the exact same situation as the character? How would we handle it in the moment?:D

  6. When I see varied comments it brings home to me how people can see the same thing in such a different way. One comment on YouTube said they hope it doesn't turn into a romance because it is suppose to be a healing drama....another said DH is looking for JA so she can finish her contract... so her resume can look good for her next job I guess "before it is too late" and I am over here swooning because of how obvious and frantic he is being about the possibilty of her not being in his life. To each his own I guess.

Looks like it.  I'll bet Joon Young had just revealed it to him, resulting in another punch to the face.  And the scene of him running toward her house must follow the taxi ride.  He is wearing the same clothes in all three scenes.  Something prompts him to get off the car and made a dash toward her like there's no tomorrow.  Unfortunately it is not a confession, I don't think.

Didn't he have on a tie in the Jy punching scene and the running towards JA's house scene..and here he doesn't?

  8. I think the state of DH's marriage is the perfect example of how things can still go wrong even with the most ideal of circumstances/matches. Doesn't matter whether your partner is 21 or 40 years old, you have to put in work to maintain a relationship. To me, what makes a relationships work is not age, but the two people involved in the relationship.

I think when it comes to relationships, where there is  a will there is a way. I will see people say that long distance relationships don't work, but it works for some, age gap relationships don't work, but it works for some...when it comes to relationships, one size doesn't fit all.

There are examples of couples having gone  through some dire circumstances and their relationship survived it all. I think what is most important is that the people in the relationship has to be on the same page.

The perfect ending for me would be where DH can find some middle ground where he is not directly hurting his family members but he is happy. But i don't think it involves him being director or CEO. I am quite surprised that some can see him in that job. I think he is best at being hands on in what he loves to do. I think politics involved would actually make him miserable. The only way i think it could work, is if he still gets to work at what he loves to do.

As it relates to the future of DH and JA, i don't know. Maybe after the upcoming episodes, i'll get a better idea of where it is heading. I know where i would like the end point to be, but i don't know the details surrounding it.

    Hi.

I am new here but I hope everyone is ok with me joining the discussion.

I have been in lurking mode because I can't catch up with you guys brilliant analysis but I am enjoying every single one of it. Since I am a beanie, so my discussion always ended up at Dramabeans.

My urge to delurke came when I read this translation because I could not process how this drama being panned badly by this writer.

I also watched Pretty Noona but decided to drop it after episode 5 for the reason that there is no exact story to be told and excessive unnecessary skinship. My Ajusshi is the exact opposite without a single skinship between the OTP but just emotional bonding yet whenever DH and JA appeared together, my heart flutters and most importantly, there is a story, a powerful message to be told.

I agree that comments at DB are too safe, too careful. As for myself, I see romantic connection everywhere between DH and JA (i mean which man  actually stealing glances at his subordinate in the office at every possible opportunity if his feelings for her is nothing more than just towards a younger sister or daughter? I certainly know my dad and brother never bothered to check me out). At times, this cautious comments can turned out to be lacking the honesty and that is when it crossed over as frustrating. Apparently, out of frustrations, I decided to lurk here because I find comments here are more honest be there are times some may come to disagreement.

I am surprised that this article seems to depict that koreans not receiving MA favourably. What I read from comments at AKP saying that MA is receiving a lot of love with very positive feedbacks at naver. And if last week's rating is any indicator, it seems the drama is picking up a lot of interest. With the mentioning of realistic, I find that the writer herself is overfed with the fantasy of a sugary cotton candy romance from Pretty Noona to overlook the realistic feel of MA.

If there is anything, I know MA is receiving unanimous love among i-fans. At DB, the feedbacks are universally positive (disregards the shippers and non shippers camps) and at AKP... Pretty Noona is heavily panned whereas praises all go to MA.

With regards to age gap, I don't see a big issue and this coming from someone who used to be in a relationship with an ajusshi 15years my senior (coincidentally an engineer too). What most important is whether both parties in the relationship sharing the same direction and complimenting each other. Obviously, that is what I see in DH and JA. They find strength in one another and can looked passed each other's shortcoming and healing thru each other's presence.  I am hoping for DH and JA to be the endgame and I hope that the writer wont succumb to whatever pressure to comply with society image and standard but just to tell us a beautiful story.

I hope i can join you guys here with lengthy discussion from time to time.

Over here, I am dying while waiting for the coming episode. Wednesday seems too far away.

Welcome! and thanks for your post, i really enjoyed reading especially the bolded part, didn't see that one coming at all. Some people watch it, some people live it.

Reading the article, and seeing the mention of violence, it just brought back to mind that MA has a few controversial issues in there, so if a person really wanted to nitpick, there are few things that they can really nitpick at. If you really think about it, the production team could have played it safe, and only suggested the violence against JA by the loan shark...they could have just suggested a lot of other things, but they didn't.

I am going to stick my neck out at the risk of being completely wrong and say this. Seeing as how they have not been shy to show possible controversial things, including the violence, then i feel confident that if a romance/end game was written originally for DH and JA, then they will not shy away from showing that too. What is another controversy added to the pot of controversies? Plus the drama only has four episodes left anyway, so YOLO. And those who want to complain about something like that, have one week tops to complain about, and then the drama is over.

They have a point though DH is still married to YH. So the possibility of entertaining a romance between DH and JA is morally wrong at the moment.  I agree with another poster  that Jian needs to leave because it will force DH to confront and decide about his marriage. I don't know about you guys but I cannot go through another week of Dong Hoon moping around and not deciding on anything. The productions needs to work on their male lead because he is bordering towards becoming a wimpy character if he keeps this up.

Don't even...my eyes are twitching just thinking about. If this happens then i would have to say that the wrong person got hit upside the head. Don't worry, I have hope that DH will make the right decision, or even the wrong decision....just any decision would be okay with me right now.

@sadiesmith @Wotad you’d be surprised at how some commenters actually think Dong Hoon should just adopt Ji An into his family.  Some even say she should just end up with Ji Seok (duh. Hints of their predilection for a noona romance.) I don’t even think they realize how awkward and even more dysfunctional that would make everything, given that Ji An sees Dong Hoon as a man.  If he adopts her, their relationship will become incestuous.

Interesting ...What day and time does this drama that the commenters are watching come on? Nobody else thinks it strange that these two dramas have the same character names? If it is not the same writer, then what a big coincidence. :astonished:

  12. If MA wants a different/shocking ending, have DH marry JA..that would shock my pants off. If they want less fantasy more reality....nah probably still fantasy, put them in bed together. If they prefer to hit me in the feels, have them kiss. If they just want me to be satisfied, have DH admit he likes/loves JA. If they want me to take a plane to Korea, find them and throw rocks at them, have one of them die, have DH and JA separate without DH admitting to anything, try to turn their relationship (DH amd JA) into a father and daughter/brother and sister/mentor and mentee relationship or make it an open ending.

Maybe it cannot be compared,   but......

    • DH found out about his wife's affair with JY ...

He did not want to  and will not CONFRONT her about it.   He just wanted to ignore it? He did not want her to know that he knows.  And just wanted to go on about their life as if he does not know.

    • Then DH will find out about JA working with JY and the wiretapping...

Now will he get mad and explode and CONFRONT JA ?

He cannot even confront his own wife but he will confront JA?

My guess is that he would probably internalize it, until he either rationalizes it/and or finds out the full truth of the matter. He did that re the phone call he received from the loan shark about the bribe money. But once he received the full truth re her childhood/life it didn't really matter anymore. It seems to me that if he did find out about her working with JY in episodes 13/14, she might not be around by the time he finds out, so he couldn't confront her even if he wanted to.

On a side note, did JH really pine after the monk for 20 years? that is crazy. After a year i'm like " that one dude i used to know" because i can't even remember his name.

  14. Something just occurred to me. It would be so sad if a cheating YH & JY , is the only one to get any 'action'  on screen in this drama. What about our OTP .....i mean non-OTP? non-couple..couple? doesn"t have a love-line couple?  I'll even take some action from  DH's brother, whats his face & that chick he is dating, whats her face....even though i don't care much about them to be honest.

Beautiful memories? Bah. Better be beautiful realities. I will accept nothing less.

JK. I really trust this pd-writer team. Whatever comes, it will be lush and gorgeous and our hearts will be bursting with joy and tears.

I don't mind the beautiful memories ending so much....

....in a different drama. They have me all dressed up fancy for dinner, I better not be getting takeout.

I kinda preparing my heart for any ending to be safe.

  16. I wish there they could sort out DH's marriage situation behind the scenes and just tell us the outcome via text running across the screen or something..It is a combination of me finding his interactions with his wife claustrophobic and depressing, and me being impatient like " Hurry up and make a decision already..I am tired of this!". I know it can be a slow process in reality, I just don't want to see it in film. It is like watching depressing paint dry.

Edit: And when his wife left the decision to SH whether they split or not I was like "NO! he is very bad at that!"

If we are going to punish Jian for the wiretapping,  then shouldn't we also put to jail every backstabbing corporate guys, Gwang Il, and JYD too. My point is why Jian should be put at the center of ethical discussion where everyone in this show is more screwed up and greedier than her. She is just a part of the manipulative corporate world where the scums destroy and blackmail  each other for power. Jian is like the female version of the Healer where she becomes a fixer to these ambitious men for money.  BTW, the Healer also wiretapped the female lead I haven't heard any ethical qualms about it when the show was airing:rolleyes:. In fact, the guy didn't even go to jail and lived happily ever after with the girl. Are we quick on passing judgments towards the imperfect female heroine than we are on their male counterparts? Come on now even the Healer didn't get arrested, so why would Jian take the moral high ground because she is female?

I agree there is no point in revealing the wiretap especially if she will leave DH as planned and get out of his life. DH will be upset but seriously the wiretap did more good than harm in his life. The guy is even getting a promotion. In fact, Jian is the one in more trouble for betraying JYD and might cost her life and freedom for taking DH's side.

Wow... you just always seem to post EXACTLY what i am thinking, but can't explain. Thanks. :D.

I think each viewer will react differently to different things in the drama based on their own ideals.I don't think that there will ever be a overall consensus as to what should happen with regards to each character, but that is the beauty of it, watch and see it however  you like, it is just a show after all. I love how we are discussing our own different view points though..very interesting reading.

Glad to see an extended preview of the upcoming episodes. This will keep me satisfied till next week.

    Hi @africandramalover

But I think it will bother her if she doesn’t come clean to Dong Hoon because his implicit trust in her will make her feel guilty.  I think she respects and cares for him too much to hide that, especially with her knowledge of how Yoon Hee lied to Dong Hoon and how devastated he was that someone he trusted would do that.

I think of all the things she has done her life time, I am sure that would be the least of her concerns. Plus there are a couple of things that I have done in my life time that I did concern my family members..minor things/nothing illegal that I haven't told them, and don't feel guilty about not telling them. If it was a case that me not telling them could harm them, then of course I would do it..I just feel that sometimes there certain things that are better left unsaid. If he specifically asks her about it, then of course she shouldn't lie about it.

Edit: I am referring to only this specific issue though, and only because of the nature of the act. I am not excusing her for her overall wrong doings.
