Watched up to ep 22 last night, and I'm loving it!

The choreography is well done, and I'm so grateful they've toned down the slow-mo because I enjoyed the fights a lot. I haven't read the original novel, but according to those who have this is the version which presents the Guang Ming Peak battle closest to the book.

    Spoiler

ZWJ identity revelation is heartwarming, with all his Wudang uncles, and his maternal grandpa and  uncle surrounding him. The scene has been depicted in the previous versions, but since the 2019 version has extended time of little Wuji being taken care of the Wudang family, this becomes a very believable family reunion.

I really like young Joseph. He's doing really well with the character. He has an earnestness that rings of authenticity. His passion for justice and true righteousness is palpable when he delivers the lines. (Maybe that's the voice actor) Whenever he meddles or jumps into any kind of fray, he sounds like he really cares. To me, that's most of the battle won. The other thing about him is that he has really nice chemistry with all the girls. Also, he does well with the martial arts stuff although... I still think this show's martial arts is its weakest element. Now that they've toned down the slo-mo, it's even less spectacular than it was.

Yes, I'm liking Joseph Zeng's portrayal very much too! He has the right expressions and mannerism supporting ZWJ's lines (though perhaps it's the other way around, the voice actor has fantastic job supporting Joseph's acting LOL).

I read on another forum that the viewership now reaches 1.5 billions -- additional 500 mios from the 2 episodes alone. The series seems to be well received, and I'm thinking the popularity of Yang Xiao also contributes to it. Yang Xiao's sarcastic comments made trending topic on weibo and generated tonnes of memes :))). Lin Yushen did a fantastic job!

Yeah maybe because he was back to school in US back then, now he is still in Beijing so... Probably confirmed he didnt use any vpn tools LOL. Hmm in China summer should be started on June right?

Btw we will get his news on March 17, CFY will attend Franic x Watsons event in XiaMen.

Cool! I wonder if SYR will attend the event as well (she also promotes Franic) *my shipper heart still commands LOL*. But I don't think it's possible, she's still shooting EN2, right?

I see that Arthur uses Roman alphabetical for his autograph, not really common for a Chinese. Regardless of his nationality, he grew up and went to school in Beijing, at least until middle school.

Sang Sang and Ning Que's relationship is so cute and innocent. Its like they are already in love at the beginning of the drama, but they just dont realize it yet. I am curious though, Ning Que often addresses her or treats her like a little girl, like shes way younger than him. Whats the age difference for them?

I don't remember it's clearly stated in the drama about their age (other than SS at one point saying she's 16 - but that's much later). I don't read the book either. My own conclusion is their age difference in the drama is about 4 or 5 years. Not a wide gap, but NQ found Sang Sang as a baby and raised her until certain age. So it's understandable that he often treats her like a little girl.

Btw i wonder about CFY's reason why he want to be an actor? Do you have his interview about this? Was it after he became assistant director of Legend of Demon Cat, he decided to be an actor?

IIRC, his interest in being an actor indeed started when he was involved in the Legend of Demon Cat production. I can't remember though where I read it. Will look upon articles and come back here when I find it. I also remember once reading about Alex Chan's impression after working with their father for that movie. He said it opened his eyes how hard the crew worked when shooting, and still they needed to make changes upon changes. He admired his father for being energetic despite his age. I think CKG deliberately involved his children for the project to show them the amount of work required in film making, so they could appreciate what it has taken to help provide the food on their table :)

  5. I read that the viewership has reached 1 billion as of last week. Congrats! Does anybody think they could reach 5 billions by the end of their run? LoCH 2017 never reached 1 in the CSM52 rating, but I can't remember their online views. My understanding HSDS is exclusively web, is it correct? Somebody, please confirm :)

PS. As I rewatched the latest episodes available (15-18), I'm liking Joseph Zeng's portrayal more and more. I had issues with his performance in the beginning, but I enjoy watching him and his gestures now. Bambi Zhu's ZZR is so Mary Sue, deer in the headlight now that I can't wait to see her turn into evilness. But I suspect it will be in the next 10 episodes or so?

  7. Up to ep 15, I'm echoing what most people say here. I love that this version tries to portray the characters more towards grey-ish, especially the villains, but also the protagonists. The fact that they spend time in the earlier episodes to flesh out characters and add some background stories makes me ponder upon things that I didn't in the previous adaptations (I admit that I haven't seen most of them).

    Spoiler

For instance, when Yin Susu committed suicide, at first I thought how selfish she was, leaving her only son alone. At that tender age, little Wu Ji had seen some of the worst actions without preparations, for he'd been sheltered since his birth. But then it occurred to me that her decision might not be as impulsive as seen. She might have thought that it would be better to leave Wu Ji in the care of the Wudang clan. She would be a liability and a danger to both of them. But Wu Ji will always have people who would protect him at all costs. Be them the Wudangs or the Heavenly Eagle clan.

I can't add more to the praises to the child actors. Toddler Wu Ji and grade-school age Wu Ji are all fantastic and give layered performance. Little Zhou Zhiruo is very natural too.  They are all very talented, but I must also give some credit to PD Jiang, or whoever handled them for the filming.  If there were a complaint from me, it was actually related to how teen/adult Wu Ji is portrayed. Child Wu Jis feel much more mature than their actual age, but teen/adult Wu Ji acts like the teen he is. I'm not sure if it's how the director wants it or Joseph Zeng's interpretation. I also feel Joseph's acting is less consistent than his child counterparts, but he only appears in the last 4 episodes, so I'm actually quite hopeful for the next episodes.

The cinematography is excellent (almost to the level of Tribes & Empires) and in general I like the camera work, although I wish they'd reduce the wide-to-focused angles and the "frozen" position in the fighting scenes, which is too anime-ish IMO. But I notice they've tone down the slow-mo, which is good.

CFY promote the movie on his weibo.

I can't follow Arthur on weibo, so I don't know how often he promotes his projects. He doesn't seem to regularly updates his social media.

I'm quite curious with his weibo status here. I know it's a direct translation from Mandarin. Do you think it means "I want it [summer] to last forever"?

This fan testimony just reiterates what we've been figuring out about Arthur's character. He maybe playful (especially towards SYR! lol), but he's also a real gentleman; he's a rich kid who's not spoiled, but instead a determined and hard working person. The Chens did a good job raising their children.

Yeah the reporter also diligent right? They know Arthur will earlier again.

My God! 6 am?? He should've just stayed over at the school the night before, lol.

I think the reporters got info already from insiders *sigh*. Any hints about what subject is being tested today?
