  1. Hi chingu-deul! When I said I hoped to interact with some of you in Kyo’s drama thread soon, I didn’t expect it to be so soon!

Thank you so much @twtwb for setting up this thread even before we have the drama title

And yes!!! I would love a AIMH’s reunion of Wonbin and Kyo!

Can’t wait for more details about the drama, drama filming sightings, script reading etc. Half a year to the start of drama shooting seems so long haha :)

Am really looking forward to our drama journey together!

  2. My dear Chingu-deul, since I have been tagged, I feel compelled to come in here to state my position on this matter. My apologies in advance if what I am going to say may hurt your feelings.

Those of you who have interacted with me over here when I was participating in the discussion would know that I have left this thread midway through CLOY’s airing. This was after Hyunbin’s agency issued a denial statement and even a warning of legal action against rumor mongering midway through the drama’s airing. In my last post here, I did state this clearly. Thereafter, after CLOY ended and after the wrap up party (one or two days after if I remember correctly), because of an edited BTS photo being circulated, another round of rumors was generated. This time, his agency issued another statement with a categorical denial. A close aide of his also stated this to reporters: “Since morning he’s been hounded by dating rumors. He’s frustrated that these rumors keep popping  up. It is understandable that many people want them to date after seeing their great chemistry in the drama, but the fact is that they are not in a romantic relationship. They were never in a romantic relationship in the past and neither are they in the present.”

As a fan of Hyun Bin, I care about his feelings. I want to take what he has stated in his response about this matter at face value and trust and believe in what he has said.

I have chosen not to post about my position or my translation of these denial news (especially over here) because of my regard for your feelings. A number of you have also DMed me and to those whom I have not responded to, this post explains why I don’t want to discuss this matter any further.

If you have read all my previous posts, you would also know that I was very supportive of Binjin shipping. And I am not against Binjin shipping at all.

However as I am only a Hyunbin fan, I care about what he has stated as his official position and I respect his position and privacy. I also don’t want to engage in speculations. As such, I no longer want to be involved in Binjin shipping. Because of that, I request that you don’t circulate my tweets about Hyunbin in here. I do not want anything I do to contribute to further speculations and the possibility of more rumors; all resulting in more trouble for Hyunbin. In any event, the tweet thread of my translation of his interview article that was shared here by @cloyfan is, as far as I am concerned, not relevant to Binjin at all.

If you are interested to find out more about Hyunbin, you may follow my Twitter account :) Please note that that is not a fan account and I use it to tweet about other stuffs too. In fact, my fangirling of Hyunbin has been kept strictly to interactions with his Chinese fans (that was where I started anyway) and though I have had my Twitter account for more than 4 years alr, I have only started to use it to tweet about him recently. For your info, as a matter of culture, Chinese fans of actors are strongly against shipping of drama couples and I have had first hand negative experiences from my Binjin supporting :sweatingbullets:

Thank you for reading! And thank you in advance for respecting my wishes. And please DO NOT LIKE/RESPOND to or QUOTE my past posts anymore haha - coz the notifications keep reminding me of my regretful actions in the past.

I wish you all more happiness in your Binjin shipping (please do so respectfully). Thank you and I’ll see some of you in other Soompi threads again sometime! Goodbye!

    (21 Mar 2020)

On Sports Chosun’s 30th anniversary, the opinions of practitioners & experts were collected through questionnaires to select "capable artistes in various fields such as film, TV drama, radio, variety & music".

In terms of film, drama and entertainment, 47 companies related to movies and 41 companies related to dramas and entertainment programs were selected to vote for three artistes each. In the drama category, HyunBin is at no.3 with 7 votes together with Jeon Ji Hyeon and Gong Hyo Jin. Kim Soo Hyun is at no.1 and Park Seo Jun is at no.2.

“Hyun Bin, who has been in his 17th year, is expected to continue to lead in the K-drama scene for a long time to come. Hyun Bin, who evidently reinstated his value with Crash Landing on You, is still considered a talent with perfect looks and acting skills. On Hyun Bin, experts explained his strengths as his ability to digest the character so perfectly that the actor himself appears to be the character in the drama and he has a good look that fits any role well."

@KimSooHanMoo I cannot read korean so just I just have a couple more questions. Was that the letter published by Naver? Is Naver an official news site of Korea? And the writer of the article is the one who revealed that HB donated? I feel bad for him that he received so much criticism

Naver is like Korea’s Google, Wikipedia, YouTube combined (? - my best description haha). If you are referring to his letter to fans, those were posted on VAST. As for whether the reporter was the one who first revealed that Hyun Bin has donated, I don’t know because there are many reports about his donation. The Korean language is very contextual- for example, in “I love you”, there is only saranghae which is literally just, “love”; there is no “I” and “You” You will only understand it as “I love you” from A to B in the context of reading or hearing the “saranghae”. In the article that I translated, based on my understanding, the writer was at times referring to a collective “we” and at other points, the writer was vocalizing his own views and indignation about the whole thing. That’s why I translated as “we” and “I” interchangeably. As for the statement about the donation, from the reports I have read, it is not clear if the information came from Korean Community Chest (the recipient of the donation) or VAST. But what is clear is that Hyun Bin’s donation wasn’t an afterthought or a reaction to criticisms because he in fact made his donation shortly after writing his comforting letters and that was even before the wave of news of donations from various celebrities. There’s no need to worry too much for Hyun Bin haha..he is a person with clear principles, focus and thinking and in all my years of following his development and news, he has always been a person who doesn’t get affected by other people’s opinions or criticisms if he doesn’t think they are valid.

By the way, there’s a report today that states that the production team of “Bargaining” has decided to change direction and start shooting in Korea, since they are unable to stick to their original plan of shooting in Jordan for now.

  5. I would like to provide my translation of a report that concerns Hyun Bin. But before I do that, I’d like to give you some background so that you understand what has been happening. As you would  already have known, many Korean celebrities have donated and or helped out (by cutting/lowering rent etc) towards the Covid-19 cause.

For Hyun Bin, on 21 Feb 2020, he wrote letters in Korean, Chinese and English to his fans and others about the Covid-19 situation, wishing that this will pass and sending his wishes that everyone will be healthy and those affected will recover soon. Unknown to all, including even his agency, he had also quietly donated 200m won to help out in the country’s Covid-19 struggles. Soon after, news of various celebrities having donated came out. Many Knetz started tallying who has donated and how much was donated by who and who. In the midst, many celebrities were bashed - for example Lee Si Eon got bashed for donating too little. Hyun Bin got it worst with comments like, “being such a big shot celeb, he only donated a letter”; or “so and so is at least better than Hyun Bin who donated only words” etc His fans and I were pained to see this. We know that he must have donated but was keeping silent about it because he has said before that he does not want to have such things publicized.

Then news of his donation of 200m won came and  it was reported that he had donated without even his agency knowing about it. Then this report came out today.

    My translation.

    ————————————————————————

I believe that it is a virtue to promote good deeds.  This is especially so for people with social influence because the more influential they are, the greater is their influence for more good deeds to be done.  So I believe that the more publicity we give to the good deeds of well-known artistes, the better the effect/influence we get.

Even so, some entertainers believe that it is right to do good things secretly.  There are also artistes who believe that it is a virtue not to let the left hand know what the right hand has done. Some artistes have expressed their unwillingness to show off donations.  Some artistes also think that doing good deeds with money is a burden on the people who sweat at the scene. This is how different people think, and we can only respect it.

Hyun Bin donated 200 million won in order to overcome the Corona 19 (Note 1) disaster.  We were determined to make public what he wants to keep secret.  There should be no significant difference in helping and it is regrettable that help is being differentiated. Many people have come forward with different types of help; they shared about it, and donated. This is definitely something to be praised about, but this should definitely not be used to put blame on those whom we have no such information of (me - meaning, no information on whether they had donated or not). People who blame and ridicule with comments like, "why don't you celebrity donate money" are just people who vent their hatred. The reason we didn’t respect Hyun Bin’s wishes and announced the donation is because we want to banish hatred.  This is not to make Hyun Bin on the list of high-end donating artistes about "Corona 19".

On the 21st of last month (February), through the official social platform of his company, he expressed his concern about the spread of "Corona 19" and left a letter wishing for healing.  He then continued to be ridiculed with bad comments.  Online communities and online communication platforms (SNS) have ridiculed him saying about him "writing only letters without donating", and many people have mocked Hyun Bin as "salt" (Note 2).

This is sad.  Not only did I feel sorry for Hyun Bin, I was also saddened by the outbreak of this abomination that is like a plague.  In order to end this abomination, we insisted on publicizing Hyun Bin’s donation report. At the same time, we also disclosed the fact that he donated for the reconstruction of the disaster area during the mountain fire disaster in Gangwon-do last year and the fact that he has obtained the status of high-value donor as a member in Honor Society (me: only people who have donated consistently and substantially over a period of time can be a member.)

Because of "Corona 19", many people are going through difficult times.  Although many people are accumulating good deeds during this difficult time, many people also sit and vent their hatred.  Whenever news of an artiste’s donation spreads, many people make a list of artistes who have not donated.  With such a list in place, the act of venting hate seems to be done on the pretext of wanting to pursue justice.

On the 3rd of this month, a so-called "Shincheonji Artiste List" (Note 3) trail message was widely distributed on SNS.  The artistes whose names were mentioned received anger from the public.  Even with a denial explanation, some even maliciously commented, “It is a a fact that Shincheonji did sneak into their existing church, how could it not be." So, such hatred was vented.

Beginning on the 5th, there will be no more comments on performing arts news on the Naver portal. This is a measure taken after  the previous measure of deleting replies.  Perhaps, regarding "Corona 19", the post that hated the artiste will be the last malicious post reported by Naver Entertainment.

The obsession with justice sometimes gives false legitimacy to people who are running off course.  In this way, they are getting farther and farther away from the justice they want.  Perhaps some venting abominations started out with a sense of justice, but they still deviated from it.

Whenever a plague prevails, aversion will follow.  Maybe anger and hatred are the most powerful forces that make people hot-blooded.  Because of this, some people still vent their anger and disgust with their own ideas today.

There is no need to forgive hatred.  Righteous forgiveness and patience are different.  Someone must cut off hatred first.  So be patient.  I believe this is the way to overcome this plague-ridden era.  The reason why things turn out in a different way from Hyun Bin's original intention and made his donation to the public is because I believe that this is the method to overcome this era.  I hope for understanding, thank you very much.

Note 1: Corona 19, a new coronavirus outbreak worldwide that started in late 2019
Note 2: Salt has the effect of relieving evil and avoiding evil spirits in Korean customs.
Note 3: “Shincheonji” refers to a group that is widely known as a cult group that is blamed for the Covid-19 outbreak in Daegu, that has now spread to other parts of Korea. It is known to spread its ideology through infiltration into churches.

The TV shows actors’ brand evaluation in February 2020 shows that Hyun Bin ranks first for brand reputation power.

According to the Korean Enterprise Brand Research Institute, from January 27, 2020 to February 28, 2020, the brand big data of 50 actors was measured by 132,857,415 consumers' brand participation in terms of media volume, communication volume and community communication, based on quantitative measurement and indexed by their brand index algorithm. February saw an increase of 22.22% (from 108,665,572) in  consumers’ participation compared to January 2020 and the brand data shows Hyun Bin at No.1 (for both January and February 2020).

TV show actor brand evaluation analysis uses the participation index, media index, communication index, and community index to analyze brand data.  Brand reputation index is an index that extracts data from brands and analyzes consumer behavior using reputation analysis algorithms, which are divided into participation value, communication value, media value, community value, social value, and the right to re-value.  Brand big data analysis can measure the affirmation of the brand, the source and attention of the media, the amount of consumer attention and communication, the community communication of hot topics, the response to the content and popularity.

Hyun Bin’s brand participation index comprises 4,293,765 media index 2,732,436 communication index 2,558,880 community index 1,781,175; total: 11,366,256.

@sillygal Your post made me go down memory lane haha..good old memories..these memories are forever etched in my fangirl’s journey. To me, Hyun Bin is unparalleled in terms of his handsomeness, his unique combination of gentlemanly mannerisms + manly charisma + adorable boyishness (from his natural shyness/reservedness) and his talented versatile acting prowess. Unlike other K actors, he is the only one that makes me love every single one of his drama characters as if they are real life characters, despite most of them being rather unlovable characters (Ri Jeong Hyeok is about the only perfect character haha). In fact, the more unlovable they are, the more I love them. He has made all of his drama characters so different and so memorable.

Due to Jordan’s entry ban of South Koreans because of the COVID-19 virus, there’s a possibility that the commencement of shooting for Bargaining, originally scheduled for end March, might be delayed. However, at the moment, the production crew is still confident that this would not unduly disrupt the movie’s schedule.

Thanks for translating this! It was a pretty long article to translate into English! The reviewer has a pretty interesting take of Hyun Bin and the title "A man who is like a lie" is such a unique one. Can you explain a little more about the word "LIE" to describe HB as I'm a little unsure. Does it mean that HB's acting is able to "lie" or deceive the audience?

The word used is “후라이” - pronounced as “hurai”, a  word that Pyo Chi Su keeps saying - huraigajimarao - meaning, “don’t tell lies”. It’s a coined word - I consulted my Korean teacher and she said this is a coined term and she does not know the origin of it. In the beginning of the drama, it was also promoted with the theme, “Like a lie, you crash landed into my world” but the word “lie” used is the normal word for “lie” in Korean. As for the meaning of “a man who is like a lie” in the commentary, I think writer is just using the drama’s coined term and theme in a metaphorical way - that this man who can show romantic acting that transcends between the two worlds (fantasy world and real world) is like an “unbelievable existence”. That’s just my own reading of it. And I kinda understand why “lie” is used. Coz the romance portrayed is also too good to be true in real life, isn’t it? :D

Doing translations take time and effort. I do feel the burden to ensure that I try not to mistranslate. And for this commentary I also had to discuss with my Korean teacher and we ended up spending some time researching on that word.

Haha.. will probably not be that active here for a while as I will be busy with quite a few dramas that are coming up. Thank you all for your appreciation

@KimSooHanMoo first of sorry for wrong posting here, didn't realize that my comment s/b posted in shipper's thread I'm willing to delete it and maybe no longer post here for HB and just be a silent lurker much as I wanted to share a lot about him such as photos, articles. It's hard to keep up with a lot of do's & dont's that it's hard to be on our toes! I only thot of responding to my chingu willenette and for one thing i didn't even know he's got his own thread until @willenette mentioned this to me not too long ago! So again apologies & TBH i didn't want to cause any ruckus here at all, I was simply expressing my fondness for HB and don't wish to harm anybody or offend anyone for HB and my other fave actress Son ye jin!

Aaww..you don’t have to feel sorry..you didn’t do anything wrong. I am sorry that I made you feel sorry :anguished:

I  do agree with you that there’s nothing wrong with the picture even if the rumors were true. I spoke up to explain that his agency has taken a stand on this. It was also reported that Hyun Bin was distressed over these speculations. So my post was done in the hope that we won’t not discuss such things any further over here. That was all. It is not my intention to make you feel sorry. I also took a longer time to apologise to you because I was locked out of Soompi for two days - it kept giving me a “no connection to server” notice. I had to email Soompi support to get back my access.

Please do continue to love Hyun Bin and share all of your wonderful gifs and pics.
I too like SYJ and have shared about this quite a few times in the shipper thread and drama thread. However I remain only a fan of Hyun Bin- thus, if “shipping” him with her or liking the idea that they are together in real life would cause rumors and further “troubles” for him, then I would stop. But, that is just my personal stand on things. Korean entertainment industry is difficult to understand- they see things quite differently, for example, dating between adults is considered a “scandal”; dating while at work is also considered to be very unprofessional. And a dating couple working together on a project is considered to be having their own romance at the expense of public money. As a non-Korean, I can’t fathom what is so scandalous about a relationship between a single man and woman. But well, this is Korea. As celebs’ lives are “ruled” by their  netizens, this may also explain why the celebs do the things they do with many celeb couples resorting to lying about their relationships. But when I look at things as a fan, things become simpler haha. I choose to believe whatever official information that has been given because that’s how I show support and respect as a fan

  11. Director Bong Jun Ho and cast of Parasite were invited to a pre-summit meeting with President Moon and the First Lady at the Blue House. First Lady said she recognized Park Myeong Hun (Seo Dan’s uncle) in Crash Landing on You because of his eyes. Then she apologized for mentioning Crash Landing on You giving the excuse that she watched it because of the Inter-Korean theme. President Moon then interjected, “it’s because of Hyun Bin” :D:D:D

Well, apparently she’s known to be quite a fan of Hyun Bin haha..Ex President Park was also an ardent fan if I am not wrong.

@stephiora Most of Hyun Bin’s long time fans have remained as fans (I am one of them) without being affected by his real life relationships. (Am not inclined towards shipping coz I am a happily married woman. Don’t see any point in investing in other people’s relationships haha)

Fans of Hyun Bin are free to ship him with anyone they fancy including with themselves :lol::lol: But please bear in mind that this is a Hyun Bin-only forum, a common forum for all of Hyun Bin’s fans, whether “Hyun Bin-me” fans, “Hyun Bin- only” fans or “Hyun Bin - xxx” fans. However, I think most fans of Actors are not shipper-inclined, from

my own experience and from being in actors’ fandoms haha..Since this is a Hyun Bin platform, please keep it as a Hyun Bin-only platform, because Hyun Bin’s fans who are Binjin, BinKyo, BinShin, SeGa inclined - all have their separate Soompi platforms to share about  their happiness with likeminded fans. So yes, please respect other participants in this Hyun Bin-only Soompi thread. There are good reasons why Soompi has got Actor/Actress-only forums, specific dramas’ forums and shipping paradise forums. Previously, shipper fans posting about shipping stuffs in SYJ’s Soompi forum had been ticked off by Soompi admin. I believe some of the participants here might also have had a similar experience. Please observe Soompi’s rules and don’t make the same mistake here.

Re watching his movies, I highly recommend Confidential Assignment, Fatal Encounter, The Swindlers and Late Autumn. My favorite movies of his are Confidential Assignment, Fatal Encounter, The Swindlers, and Late Autumn - in that order haha. I love I Am Happy too but I wouldn’t recommend it coz the theme is not easy to digest.  For drama series, unlike most of his fans, my favorite is actually Friends Our Legend. I really love love Dong Soo in there coz he wrenches my heart and shreds it into pieces every time I think of him :bawling::bawling::bawling:

A bit about me as a Hyun Bin fan - my first love is Kim Joo Won (Hyun Bin in Secret Garden). I have since backwatched and followed all of his projects. It was for this reason that I chased Memories of the Alhambra live - in the same way I chased Crash Landing on You live but I did that together with his Chinese fans and my bunch of drama fans friends. It was Memories of the Alhambra that brought me back as an active fan once again coz it made me realize how much I love seeing him on the small screen. When you have gotten over CLoY, please do watch that drama. His acting in there was so so good - a lot of the scenes were acted out of his own imagination as the drama requires a lot of CGI and post shooting editing. His acting was so good that he got nominated for Baeksang last year though he didn’t win an award because the competition last year was just too stiff.

Am looking forward to all of your posts about Hyun Bin here.

@willenette from the photo here i copied to see what we're talking about :

if we look closely on HB's suit and it's clear that it was his hand!

Anyway, i'm still not sure what to think of when we often hear/heard some celebs dating & what-not and at first they or their agencies will come out denying it, my take on this is - not specifically HB and SYJ - two ppl are unattached, both single, both famous and so on, what's wrong if it's true? If it's not true, then ok let's give them space and not interfere further however, if it's true (again let's say we're not talking about them) in general, I think this news wld be well accepted by their fans and I for one would be so happy for them! Furthermore, if HB and SY are really just friends and not lovers, if i'm just thinking why not? If i were HB or SY i'd be attracted to him or her :) unless one of them are already seeing someone! The latter would be a more solid answer in all this!

I'm sorry, but I still ship them in real life :) Love both of them!

I am afraid that I have to speak up against this in this Hyun Bin’s Thread. If you still want to talk about the picture or about them, please do so in the Shipper Forum, but please, not here. His agency and his close friend have issued very STRONG statements refuting not only that his hand was holding hers in that picture but also that they are dating or have ever been dating partners in the past as well. VAST also said that both are professional actors and they would not do something that is considered to be unprofessional while filming, even if they were dating which, is not the case. In any event, if it was true that he was holding her hand under the table, do you think this would have been released as BTS by tvN?!

The strong denials have been given repeatedly already. When the drama was still airing, I agree that our refusal to take the strong denials at face value can be excused because we all did not discount the possibility that they might have denied coz drama was still airing and they surely didn’t want the rumors to overshadow their drama. But, the latest denials and strong statements from Hyun Bin’s agency and close aide came after the drama has ended and in the background of the public in SK loving them and wanting them to be a real couple. This speaks volumes to me. His agency could have chosen to just speak up against the picture and leave it vague about the other rumor but instead, they chose to address the dating rumor head-on and very specifically as well. With those statements, majority of Knetz have already accepted that the rumors are not true. If you read Korean, you’d realize the impact of it. The statements have even caused some knetizens to voice their unhappiness over the unhealthy speculation coz it is giving a death knell to the possibility of them being a couple in the future (many Knetz actually want this). So yes, since we love them, we should just stop talking about that picture. I won’t dictate what you should or should not do in the shipper forum. But in this Hyun Bin-only forum, please respect him and his fans’ wish to respect him by respecting his privacy and believing what he has said. Please don’t post any shipping related stuffs here.

As for the grocery picture, VAST has also once again said they were not alone and had other friends with them at that time. So yes, we should not speculate any further. His private life is none of our business. It is important that we respect his privacy and stop speculating about things that he has already spoken up against.

I will also share some information- though I am not in a position to tell how the information correlate to the grocery pics because I do not know the facts, the information might at least give us some idea as to what might have been the background behind the grocery pics.

    1. Lee Jung Suk, the Director of Negotiation lives in the US.

    2. Park Ji Eun, the Writer of Crash Landing on You lives in the US.

    3. There was an article recently released that talked about the time duration needed to engage Hallyu stars like Hyun Bin, Gong Yoo, Ha Jung Woo etc etc in projects - that they typically have to book them very early on - sometimes as long as 3 years in advance. These top stars will look at many factors such as the script and even the supporting cast etc etc. Therefore, casting them takes time because they need to match their schedule and their co-cast schedule and other support casts’ schedules and so forth.

    4. Many Korean celebrities have houses in the US.

Given the info shared above, it is possible that the friends with them are the Director of Nego or the Writer of CLoY. There is no reason to doubt the statement of VAST.

When the LA pics were posted, his agency said that he was in the US for business. Again, with the info above, he could really have been in the US to discuss about CLoY script or about the possibility of taking part in this project. Again, there is no reason to speculate that his agency wasn’t telling the truth.

I hope we all stop talking and speculating about that picture. It has caused enough harm as it is already.

I also want to sincerely apologize for my previous posts in the shipper thread. Many continue to like my posts and I am reminded of my folly everytime a like crops up in my email notification. I shouldn’t have participated in all of these speculations and I do regret having done so.

Hi KimSooHanMoo, thanks for sharing this article. About the upcoming movie, "Bargaining", I hope we could get to hear MORE updates on this project. About the holding hands, I also posted here what his Agency's side & I also posted what my take on this.

Re Bargaining, I am not sure if I have already shared about this, but will share again. Bargaining is a movie based on the true story that happened in 2007 when 23 South Korean Christian missionaries were held hostage by the Taliban in Afghanistan. Hyun Bin will play as a NIS agent and Hwang Jeong Min will play as a diplomat and together the duo will help to negotiate for the release of the hostages who were alive (a few were killed before the release). Movie is directed by Yim Soon Rye, the Director of Korean movie Little Forest and produced by Watermelon Pictures. The movie schedule shows its likely release date to be in September. As Hwang Jeong Min has already confirmed acting in JTBC’s upcoming drama 허쉬 which is scheduled to be aired in the second half of this year, I expect that shooting for the movie will start very soon.

Will post any updates that I see.

  13. There is one very good review/commentary written by Jung Si Woo, a Film Columnist about Hyun Bin as an actor in romance dramas.

    http://m.ize.co.kr/view.html?no=2020021716057218325

I provide here my translation of that commentary.

    ———————————————————————-

A look at Hyun Bin - A man who is like a lie!

(the phrase which I have translated as “lie” is 후라이 (hu rai) Pyo Chil Su’s pet phrase)

    Y9fw9pc.png

This winter of 2019, with the arrival of "Crash Landing on You", actor Hyun Bin created another life-like character - Comrade Ri Jung Hyuk!

The TV series did end in a little bit of an underwhelming sort of way.  The tension accumulated until the middle of the drama was loosely dismantled, and the tangled contradictions were resolved with a sense of absurdity but with ease.  Not to mention that the man and woman in love would meet only once a year for two weeks. The open ending of them meeting each other at the bridge in Switzerland is ambiguous - though it isn’t a complete reunion, it is also not considered a "tragedy".  Maybe the writer wants us to believe that this is the best choice that can be found out of the reality of two countries that are split, but because it was a bright ending, it was also a little colourlesss.  Besides, hasn't writer Park Ji-eun used a similar type of ending of "long-distance love" for “You Who Come from the Stars"? Nevertheless, the "Crash Landing on You” still fully embodies this truth: that the success of a romance drama depends entirely on the main characters.  While SYJ’s charm is also dazzling, but the person I want to talk about here is the actor Hyun Bin.

The genre that shows off Hyun Bin's greatest strength is romance.  In this field, he has already experienced two peak moments. For most actors, it is difficult to experience a peak moment even once in a lifetime.  But for Hyun Bin, he has already experienced it twice. This was the case with "My name is Kim Sam Soon" which awakened the love cells of women, and caused them to harbor the desire to be Jeon Ji Hyun, or Kim Tae Hee. The same is the case for The Secret Garden.  Now, once again, Hyun Bin has attracted the audience to enter into the "Hyun Bin World" through the tvN’s “Crash Landing on You” which ended on February 16.

You might ask why is that so amazing? Let me tell you IT IS REALLY AMAZING.  This is because this art of seduction which can capture an unspecified number of minds at all age groups with his beautiful look and charms, is not an ability given to all. This is an area that even Song Kang-ho or Choi Min-sik, who have great achievements in their own careers in acting, have not experienced. It's not that so and so is better than so and so.  I want to say that every actor has his own unique talent/charisma in his own field. Here, I am talking about the attributes of one Star who has the ability to become the object of desires and daydreaming to the masses through his romance dramas.

However, Hyun Bin is nicknamed the "king of melodramas" not simply because he had three powerful turning points through romance dramas.  The nickname stems from his various styles in the theme of love.  When Hyun Bin made his debut appearance in the melodrama “Ireland” as the bodyguard Kang Gook, he used his infectious voice to convey the emotional lines created by writer In Jeong Ok in such a way that left behind a long aftertaste, displaying a power much unlike a newcomer.  His wife (Lee Na Young) fell in love with another man, and instead of being angry, he said, "It seems that he is smarter than me, that guy. I seem to be a bit inadequate."  Kang Gook, the fool in love who forcefully concealed his pain and continued to love persistently and unchangingly, will go on to become one of the characteristics often captured in Hyun Bin's acting in the future.

    FIuHwBN.jpg

In the series “My Name is Kim Sam-soon," he revealed the face of Prince Charming, and in "The World They Live” which was a work by writer Noh Hee-kyung, he landed in the real world and so realistically and vividly portrayed Jeong Ji-oh who was "always cool but often nasty” that people have the illusion that Jeong Ji-oh (Hyun Bin) was really a living person outside of the drama. Whenever there is an opportunity to express feelings, there are always actors who use their tears as a starting point to show their emotions. Among such actors, Hyun Bin's naturally easy, unexaggerated acting with the right degree of emotions is quite new; in a movie like “I am very happy", which shows the daily mundane life, his real value in acting really comes out with even more dazzling results.  He is never exaggerated when playing as a romantic character.  Even when playing a playboy character, he didn’t portray merely a swoonsome figure. In the movie of the same name, which remade director Lee Man-hee's "Late Autumn” of 1966, he breathed life into the character by infusing details into the “playboy” man, Hun, who was a “very compassionate, deeply-thoughtful” man and who gave off feels of loneliness and cuteness at the same time. Therefore, Hyun Bin is a man who, while being Prince Charming in the fantasy world, at the same time, he is also an ordinary man who lives somewhere around us in this world. Few actors can skillfully coordinate between these two extreme charms as the foundation of romance melodramas the way Hyun Bin does.

It is for this reason that Hyun Bin is regarded as the most suitable actor for a TV series like "Crash Landing on You", which took the "fantasy-love" of a North Korean military officer and a South Korean chaebol into South Korea's most sensitive "reality". "Crash Landing on You" is by Park Ji-Eun who has authored "You Who Come from the Stars" that tells the love story between an alien and a top actress and "Legend of the Blue Sea", a work inspired by the legend of the mermaid. There is also fantasy in “Crash Landing on You” and that is the truce line that cuts the north from the south.  The main background is set in North Korea, a place located on the other side of the Republic of Korea, that is physically near, but psychologically farther away than Argentina - an unknown land.  But this world is not like the completely fantasy world of "You Who Come from the Stars" and "Legend of the Blue Sea".  Those kinds of fantasy space allows unlimited imagination but in this fantasy world, you are playing in a space that actually exists; so the fantasy in “Crash Landing on You” is different in nature. "Crash Landing on You" needs to be both powered by fantasy and yet, rooted in reality.  This is why Hyun Bin, who has the ability to travel freely between the two worlds, is perfect for this work.

In a way, the Ri Jung Hyuk we see in "Crash Landing on You" is an embodiment of all the roles that Hyun Bin has shown so far.  When hiding his love inside a cold, indifferent facade, Ri Jung Hyuk is Samshik in "My Name is Kim Sam Soon"; when he doesn’t know how to shake off his love and finds himself desperately committed to his beloved woman like a fool, he is Kang Gook in "Ireland"; when he uses the power he has by virtue of his birthright to protect his love, he displays the 2nd generation chaebol Kim Joo Won in "The Secret Garden"; when he dreams of spending a trivial day with his love, he becomes Ji-Oh in “World Within Us”. All in all, he is a man who is romantic but not cringe-worthy, honest but not boring, calm and yet, deep. The typical frame of the drama, in which the man protects the woman, could have been too old-fashioned, but thanks to Hyun Bin, we have a man with the delicate sensibilities that Hyun Bin has given him - a man who  transcends magic and exists like a lie.

The actor, Hyun Bin, who has carved out extraordinary records in the melodrama genre, doesn't seem to have any intention to just remain in the melodrama genre. With his on-screen moves in recent years as a readable hint, showing his choices of action, crime and historical genres, Hyun Bin has quietly expanded his scope. Although there is currently no work that has fully shown his own strength and competence in the way romance melodramas have shown of him, which is a problem he needs to solve, but his determination and his vision to not only be a handsome actor is clear.  Therefore, people are even more curious what action this man who is like a lie will show in the future.

PS: I am eagerly awaiting his new movie, Bargaining.

@willenette I just want to let you know that his agency has strongly refuted that he was holding her hands in that picture. There was an OSEN report that came out yesterday that reported this :

“Someone who is close to Hyun Bin said this to OSEN, “Hyun Bin is very distressed by these dating rumors that have cropped up time and again. It is understandable that many people, after seeing their great chemistry in the drama, want them to date in real life but the truth is, they were never lovers in the past and at present, they are also not lovers.”

My impression from what I have read in Korean is that the denial is categorical. So yes, I think that as fans of Hyun Bin, we should take at face value what has been stated to be his stand on this. They have not been dating and are presently not dating partners as well. I for one, won’t want to add to his “distress” at all. Like many, I had also thought they might be dating too and was also hoping that they are since they look so good together. But after reading the reports that have come out yesterday and the day before (I can’t remember if the hot news was over 2 days or just 1 day haha), I realized I was wrong. Also, we have his past practice of openly and coolly admitting to his relationships. So yes, there is no reason to go behind what has been stated. I will trust him and support all his choices. I want to remain a “career fan” that supports him in all his projects and not be overly concerned about his private life except when it is necessary to protect his reputation against malicious rumors

  14. I am so joyous over the achievement of this drama. This drama has everything - a refreshing and thoughtful script, creative directing and beautiful cinematography, explosive chemistry and fantastic acting of our main leads, great acting of second leads and all support cast - from each and everyone of F5, the North Korean ahjummas, Seo Dan’s mom and uncle, comical SeRi’s staff and insurance agent, SeRi’s eldest brother and wife, not forgetting our “hateable” villain Cho Cheol Gang and SeRi’s 2nd brother and wife, and all child actors who made me cry buckets as well, all are unforgettable characters I have come to know and love. They have become real characters etched in my memory forever. This drama is now the drama of a lifetime for me. I consider myself fortunate to have been on this fulfilling and rewarding journey watching and reviewing this drama together with all of you. I want to say thank you once again to all who have participated here as you have added so much more enjoyment in my drama journey and made it all the more meaningful. Jeongmal kamsahamnida! Na neun haeng bokhetda. (Thank you very much! I have been blessed.)

This is for keeps to celebrate the fact that Crash Landing on You is at present, tvN’s Top Drama by highest rating reached.

  15. Happy Valentine’s Day dongmudeul! Hope our 2Ri/RiRi couple had their own Valentine’s date with their special someone

In keeping with my desire to share about the interesting places featured in the drama, this is where our 2Ri/RiRi couple went when they “bunked off” and had a daeng daeng time together (댕댕- am still struggling with the usage of this term. My Korean dictionary tells me this is a North Korean term but the various meanings ascribed to this term doesn’t seem to fit the way SeRi used it. Anyone who knows, please share your knowledge!)

@KimSooHanMoo any news on when is the wrap-up party will be held? I heard it's on 13th...but postponed ?

Just coming in to answer your question. https://www.ytn.co.kr/_sn/0117_202002101741024618 - this news article said they are wrapping up the project on 13th and will have a wrap up event at an unnamed place on 13th. But there has been no further news about this. So I am not sure if they are really going to have a wrap up party in the usual fashion. There has also not been any news about a reward trip. I think the fear of the coronavirus spread might have curtailed some of these plans.

Does anyone know if kdrama writers are also the script writers for the drama?  I think often in hollywood films, writers write the story, but screen writers adapt the story into film with dialogue etc.  I'm just curious because some of these CLOY lines are really well-written.

Watching kdramas like “Be Melodramatic“, “King of Dramas”, “ World Within Us” tells me that for kdramas, the Writer writes the story and is also the screenwriter who writes the dialogue and creates the scenes. For most kdramas (except for dramas like the Reply Series where you have a creative powerhouse Director Shin Won-ho who teams up with Screenwriter Lee Woo-Jung, this team always comes in this duo team), the Writer is everything haha..and it is also the Writer who gets the highest pay. When a Kdrama goes awry, people always blames the Writer. For kmovies however the Director is everything. This is my lil observation after having watched quite a bit of Kdramas haha.

@junelives I think he was drawn to her from the time of seeing her hanging in the tree (I.e, from the beginning). The feelings grew very quickly and by the time of the scene of him holding the scented candle in the market, his feelings for her were more or less firm; that’s why he was so anxious about her. In my view, for SeRi, at that scene it was only the start of her feelings for him. So hers for him probably started later than his for her but she vocalized her feelings earlier than him. She is less afraid to speak her mind and that’s why her confession came first, starting with the subtle confession at the restaurant at Pyongyang.

I lol(ed) so hard at this scene when Emma’s guitar music played. Kudos to both the Director and the Writer (am not sure who’s the one creating this idea. It could even have been Hyun Bin himself haha)  (PS: the drama segment is on the 2nd page)

@KimSooHanMooI keep seeing your post and im curious is your username a reference from that song HB always hummed in SG when trying to stay strong with Ha Ji Won?

I haven't watched many BTS but the one of them reuniting in SK in fake snow that kept getting in her eyes/nose...they were so fun and playful to watch. I swear you cannot tell me there is not something between those two! They aren't just having fun as I'm sure they do filming alot of dramas...they are truly enjoying "each other"...it seems to me anyway

You must not have watched Secret Garden properly haha..well, it’s the drama that made me a fan of Hyun Bin ten years ago and I have since watched every single project of his. By the way it is also the project that gave him the honour of holding the record of being the youngest to have won a Baeksang Daesang award (if I am not wrong). Back to what KimSooHanMoo means. It’s basically a chant that Kim Joo Won (Hyun Bin’s character) keeps chanting whenever he’s confused, frustrated or unable to control his emotions etc. The full chant is

“김 수한무 거북이와 두루미 삼천갑자 동방삭 치치카포 사리사리센타 워리워리 세뿌리카 무두셀라 수름이 허리케인 담벼락 서생원에 고양이 바둑이는 돌돌이…

Kim Soo Han Moo Geo Bukgi Wa Doo Roo Mi Sam Cheon Gab Sa Dong Bang Sark Chi Chi Ka Po Sa Ri Sa Ri Sen Ta Weo Ri Weo Ri Se BBu Ri Ka Moo Doo Sel La Goo Roomi Heo Ri Kae In Dam Byeo Rak Seo Sang Won eh Go Yang ee Ba Du Ki Neun Dol Dol ee..”

It’s basically a nonsensical chant comprising the names of animals like the tortoise, cranes etc and fictitious characters etc - all of them are symbols of longevity.

  19. My musings on Ep 11.

Some of you have complained about Ep 11 having what you perceive as unnecessary fillers. I agree there were scenes that appeared longer than necessary, but haha, wearing my drama fan hat, in my objective view as a drama fan, it is the scene of Jeong Hyeok trying on different suits that is more of a filler scene than some of the others (scene is probably also for PPL purposes). But of course, no one (and definitely not the Hyun Bin fan me) is complaining about it. To me, the other scene that appears a bit more dragged out than necessary is the scene of Dan’s meeting with her old classmates. Still, the scene is important to deliver to us how the issue of Jeong Hyeok and Dan’s engagement is now resolved.

I think the shaman scene is important for two things- 1. A foreshadowing of things to come - a blood bath, Man Bok not going back. I am really scared of what may happen to him and that peaceful village; 2. As one of you have shared, this scene enlightens the audience about how religion can’t be practised freely in the North. It also educates audience that despite the ban on religion, like many South Koreans, North Koreans too, resort to going to the shaman for fortune telling. As people, we all have similar needs - the need for religion and the need to satisfy our curiosity about what’s going to happen to us in the future etc.

As for the loveline between SJ and Dan, prior to this episode, I did wonder where this loveline was going and was a lil concerned as to whether the loveline is going to take quite a bit of screen time from our OTP’s love story especially since we only had 6 episodes left. So I am happy to see the pace of development of that relationship in this episode and I applaud the Writer for the creative way in which this loveline is coming together in such a short time. And I must say Kim Jung Hyun’s acting is so good!

I love these various food for thoughts bits in episode 11. In the lift, SeRi explained about her various dating “scandals” and she said even having a meal together is a scandal and walking together down Han River Park creates “rumors”. And the earlier scene where SeRi told Jeong Hyeok that there are CCTVs and mobile phones everywhere and why it was important that he covers his face. Both scenes did give me an “ouch” effect as I thought about what had happened and is happening to the actors themselves and to Korean celebrities. The scrutiny and invasion of privacy that they are subjected to in the South and when I contrast that to the occasional house inspections that happen in North Korea, I don’t know which is worse.  Also, although there are no random house inspections, in the Internet-connected parts of the world, we also face violations of people’s privacy, where all kinds of things are posted online for people to comment on (Jeong Hyeok’s act of holding the door open for other shoppers is an example). I love that the Writer is subtly giving us these juxtapositions of contrasts which when you think about it, isn’t very different in some sense. I also wanna add that the online comments that Jeong Hyeok got also showcase South Koreans’ obsession with external appearance. That’s why they have newly coined terms such as “얼굴 천재” which literally means “face genius” - a face that is far superior than the common people and that is appreciated and admired by everyone. While I would readily agree that if anyone in South Korea were to be described as a “face genius” it will have to be Hyun Bin and I myself am at a loss of words to describe his handsomeness, I must admit that I would probably loathe to be living in a place where there’s this extent of obsession with the external appearance.

The other thing that just struck me after watching episode 11 is that SeRi is so lonely in the South. Her manager (can’t remember his name) said she doesn’t eat with anyone. While in the North she ate happily in the company of the F4 and the North Korean ahjummas she is all alone in the South. In the North we see a lot of communal living and sharing - the North Korean ahjummas and the F4 (now F4+1) are always hanging out together as a group. Contrast that with life at the South, SeRi’s eomma is lonely in that BIG house; SeRi is lonely through and through even though she has a family that can’t be considered as small coz she not only has two brothers and their spouses in addition to her parents but they are like strangers who learn about what is happening to each other in the news the same way as the general public- all that SeRi’s eldest brother knew is her dating scandals which he learned about from the news (and even that, he couldn’t remember correctly). This is the cold sad truth of SeRi’s luxurious but awfully lonely life in the South.

Re SeRi’s character I love how clever and sharp she is. When she passed Jo Cheol Kang at the lift lobby she had known something was amiss coz he didn’t greet her unlike how she is always usually greeted by the security personnel. I love that no important detail is left out in the telling and unfolding of the drama storyline. Someone here in one of the posts remarked that this scene was a bug coz Jo Cheol Kang could have kidnapped her there and then at this scene. I don’t think so because there would be cctv cameras and he would have been caught right away. Then, when SeRi went to the car, because she had already felt that something was amiss, she had the sense to go to the front of the car to pretend to knock on the bonnet to check if there were any animals hiding in the warm underneath of her car as taught by Jeong Hyeok. Then her move

to the control station to have a full view of where Jo Cheol Kang is is also a very smart move. And the shutting off of the lights and speaking is also really smart. We are shown once again Jeong Hyeok’s keen sense of hearing.

I also love that Writer uses SeRi’s love for Jeong Hyeok to save her time and again. At Jeong Hyeok’s house, it was SeRi’s love for Jeong Hyeok that impressed his parents and caused the father to abandon the idea of “getting rid of her quietly”. This time round, again, it was SeRi’s love for Jeong Hyeok- she wanted to save him from Jo Cheol Kang’s pointing gun that saved her.

I also want to share about my appreciation over how the scenes are shot. I have shared about how I really like the way one scene cuts to the next. In episode 11, I see one such beautiful cut again - the scene of F5 at the bb.q chicken place that cuts into delivery of the chicken to SeRi’s home. That is one great PPL execution! It is also great camera work in shooting F4 seated together at dusk/nightfall; F4 climbing the hills at sunset; F5 looking at the night scene of Seoul. All of these show how carefully planned and shot some of the scenes are. Unfortunately I can’t and don’t know how to do screencaps from Netflix and so can’t put the stills here to demonstrate the beauty in the cinematography. Sigh.

And I must mention how much I love Hyun Bin’s acting in Ep 11. Boy, that scene when he overheard SeRi’s second brother - that anger mixed with pitiful love for SeRi, that scene when he received Jo Cheol Kang’s phone call; that car park scene - his emotions were all so palpable! I can’t even use words to describe that emotive acting. And our OTP’s explosive chemistry especially at the final scene which many of you had wanted to be a push against the wall kissing scene haha..but honestly speaking, it no longer bothers me whether they kiss or not coz that scene is even more sensual than a lot of kdrama kissing scenes for me. Also I don’t want to have high expectations about kissing scenes anymore after seeing how the Director has trolled us and kept out the “real thing” from us haha...On a more serious note, I agree with some of you who have posted, the scenarios in which all the kissing that had happened or not happened are just not the right or ripe scenarios for passionate kissing.

Re Ep 11’s rating, it is really heartening to see that the drama held its rating despite a one week hiatus and despite a fierce competition with other dramas that air in that concurrent time slots. The highest real time rating was 16.3 and that’s higher than the highest for Ep 10 which was at 15.9.

And I am pleased to share that as at 12.50 KST, all top 30 videos on Naver TV was CLoY’s! The thirst for this drama is real, inspite of the hiatus.

So I am really hopeful that the rating will go even higher! I am cheering for the rating to reach 22% as Hyun Bin has wished.

OST 8 is "All My Days" by Gugudan’s Kim Sejeong. It was played at the scene where SeRi tried to comfort herself by recalling her happy moments with Jeong Hyeok when she was kidnapped and taken away by the gunmen. The love-themed song which starts off with the lyrics - “You know, I have something to tell you right now," is like a monologue in which one opens up to tell his/her loved one what he/she wants to tell him/her. OST 8 will be released on 1 February 6pm KST.

OST 9 - “It’s Good", a sweet duet by singer So Soo-bin and Nature’s Sohee will be released on Feb. 2, 6pm KST.

"It’s Good” is the song inserted at the fire-baked clam with soju party scene where Jeong Hyeok and SeRi stole glances at each other and opened their hearts to each other.

Read comments here and there about Hyun Bin being too skinny in Secret Garden or that he has the right degree of bulk in this drama etc. Would like to share that he deliberately lost 10 kg for Secret Garden to perform the body swap role believably. And for Jeong Hyeok, he deliberately bulked up and got himself a tanned look in order to portray the “protector” role believably. As the episodes wore on, I can see that he has gradually lost his tan and his bulk too..that’s also understandable as they have all been working really hard on set. Hyun Bin always carefully creates the physical appearance of his characters and you will not see the same person in his characters. That’s how serious he is at delivering his performance and he really works hard at his craft. Haha.. the physique and fair complexion in Hyde, Jekyll and Me is more reflective of the real Hyun Bin. As @L A has said, and I also agree, he looks the best in that drama and that’s also the case in the real person.

What movie will he be working on after CLOY may I ask?

I'm happy to see Hyun Bin again and again on my laptop screen :)

It’s “Bargaining” - blockbuster movie with budget of 10 billion won, directed by Little Forest’s Director and based on the true story of 23 South Korean missionaries held hostage in Afghanistan in 2007. He will be a NIS agent. The other lead is Hwang Jeong Min, his close friend and sunbaenim. Last I checked, movie schedule states it’ll be released in September.
