  3. I think a chingu has mentioned earlier, How do we know that red is KJH’s (or CSH’s) favourite colour.

I agree that neither the drama nor the characters acknowledge that KJH or CSH like red best.  But red is a recurring motif: CSH’s Cuban dress, HI’s notebook, CSH’s red jumper at the Kim family dinner, her couple rings date outfit, the gift boxes from KJH...

If a chingu wants to, you could post a comparison of all these objects and while the shade may vary here and there, they are all nearly of the same red. (I’m too lazy to do it!)

I think @bebebisous33 has already pointed out the striking colour of CSH’s dress and her melancholy expression gave KJH pause from photographing. In later episodes (ep 5 and finale) we learn that both had walked past each other in Seoul before, but he had not noticed her.  Since her beauty has not changed, what made him look up from his camera in Cuba then?  Surely the striking colour of the dress caught his eye first - CSH stood out against the turquoise sea and natural hues of the esplanade.  Then as he continued to gaze at the mysterious woman he may have wondered: How could a woman look so miserable wearing a dress the colour of life?

The red dress signifies CSH subconsciously wanted to break out of her zombie-like existence, where she had been enduring life’s incidents that happen to her.  That she chose to seek out the sunset view of El Malecon beach despite taking a sleeping pill (yeah, smh) is kind of suicidal and rebellious, a reckless bid to break out of her self-induced coma.  That was her first act of volition which fatefully led to her first proper encounter with the love of her life.

So to me, the colour motif and choice of attire are not accidental.

I think PBG also said in an interview that for the scenes where he jotted down significant events into his calendar, he decided to wear the same jumper, which also aligned with what PD-nim wanted for the mise en scene. That Hye-In was able to declare to Jinhyuk that she finds red too eye-catching and not really her colour is her acknowledgment that she is not really compatible with Jinhyuk. She was finally ready to move on from her unrequited crush.

Anyway, this ^ is just my brain fart. I guess I’ve been dwelling on it as red is my favourite colour.  Lol!

  4. We are owed interviews with Park Shinwoo and Yoo Yang-ah.

Encounter seems to pay homage to a film that Song Hyekyo admires, Comrades: Almost a Love Story, the 1996 film directed by Peter Chan, whom she has also met, starring one of her Hongkong friends, Leon Lai.

For example, two scenes from Comrades are echoed: the couple’s bicycle ride and the kiss through the car window. Although, yes, these are also romantic tropes.

I would love to know what inspired Yoo and Park, as well as whether SHK had any inputs in the script. There are other aspects of the drama which seem to be a reflection of SHK’s personal experiences.

If anyone comes across interviews with the two creators, please share them. Thanks.

  5. There’s a lovely, thoughtful review of the last few episodes of Encounter on Tumblr:

    http://tinytrashqueen.tumblr.com/post/182405609516/boyfriend-13-16

What I like most in the review is this quote -

This show was about two people falling in love, and it was also about family, and women in positions of power, and dealing with traumas. But most importantly, it was about a woman learning that she deserves the love of her life. It was such an important message that Soo Hyun learned it twice.

    Encounter Drama Script Books

It would be soooo useful if there was an English translation of the screenplay.  (Wonder if these publications are of the actual shooting script.)

Due to the glaring scarcity of skinship between eps 12-15,  there are certain scenes where I would like to know if there were originally directions for more ..er.. intimate touches... #forscience of course.

I would love any deleted scenes to be included in the Director’s Cut, although I doubt there are many due to the tight filming schedule.

Apologies for lowering the tone a tad, but I’m a byeontae ahjumma.  Mianhamnida.

Chingus, in what Encounter episode can we find that book that Kyo has started reading?

The first episode.  KJH was reading this book before he was encouraged to dance by a little Cuban girl.

Later uri soojin discussed the titular short story on their couple rings date, as well as bookstore date.

  8. One of the other soundtrack pieces that I think maketh a scene (and makes me squee) is called Lovebirds (그남자 진혁, 그여자 수현 - Jinhyuk the man, Soohyeon the woman).

In ep 2 there is an excerpt as Soohyeon surreptitiously ogles Jinhyuk who is demonstrating how to use the loupe, and it continues as he watches her use the loupe in turn.

In ep 6, when Soohyeon ties on the necktie for Jinhyuk, this track plays again, and I think the man’s whistling and woman’s cooing-humming makes the scene more sensual. ::squee::

Anyone with other favourite scenes and pieces of music?

P.S.  i have no idea why the font sizes are so strange in a single post-_-

@thepixies thanks for the info.  im loving all of the background music.. wish though they included the bgm at the end of ep 15 when KJH was walking towards CSH office. Anybody knows that bgm?

Yeah there seems to be a couple of instrumentals that have not been included on the album.

My other favourite piece does not appear to be on it either.  It can be heard in a few scenes: the first time is when KJH admits candidly to Mijin that his feelings for SH are not those of a mere dalliance, then we hear it again when SH returns home after the meal at JH’s home and she sits and contemplates almost pensively.

There is a sort of poignancy to this piece.  I love it.

    Spoiler

Let’s celebrate the positive (and there are so many) aspects of the drama and create happy memories for us as kjh would recommend, instead of dwelling on the nonsense of others (ie the media), or we would be letting the antis win.

Hello does anyone know the name of the background song used during the final episode when CSH was walking under the snow and looking at the pictures in the dark room? The song starts when she got off from the car (with Mr Nam) and heads toward the playground. Didn't have much lyrics so I couldn't catch it but it was so good.

Thank you to anyone who can help me get a lead on this ! :)

    Hi!

The full ost is now out on iTunes.  The particular instrumental piece is called Every Breath, and is my favourite too.  That scene of Soohyun climbing the steps with the flashbacks to her visit to Teacher Lee’s...amazingly cinematic with this sweet track accompanying her.

    Enjoy the songs!

  12. Thanks very much @twtwb dai-gor and this thread’s sunbaenims.  It has been a great joy reading all the analyses and wonderful recaps of this beautiful modern fairytale.

Just delurking now to add that I think ep 14 presents to us the last demon opposing our pure and precious SooJin couple: Soohyun’s own mind.   Even the three witches ie the mother figures who can’t/don’t want to love Soohyun, are not as formidable as Soohyun’s personal cage of insecurities.

She has endured years of neglect even prior to her marriage into Taegyeong, from both her Lady MacBeth of a mother and her loving but passive father.  So it is understandable that she really broke down when Jinhyuk’s mother, the only mum in the story whom she would most like approval and acceptance, repudiates her and became the embodiment of Soohyun’s greatest fears.

Us viewers know realistically that JH’s mummy can be won over given time and patience.  Soojin already has JH’s papa and Jinmyung on their side, while Cha papa has given his blessing.  Soojin’s inner circle all approve wholeheartedly.  The only barrier left is Soohyun herself.

My hope for ep 15 is that Soohyun truly awakens and fights her own demons.  We can’t rely on Jinhyuk to help (and he has helped plenty already although to no avail it seems - two proposals, couple rings, his resolution of the Cuban crisis et al) as this is Soohyun’s personal battle.  Anyway, it will be so so satisfying to see this princess rescue herself: before she can love another person she will first have to love herself.

Having written all that, our Encounter writer-nim probably meant ep 14 to be completely different to my interpretation!

    Er...I’ll go back to lurking...but a Shoutout to @applegirl2 chingu first. :-D

All that seriousness aside, here's a question for everyone:

How "conservative" do you think Cpt Yoo actually is? :phew: Hahaha... From the last episode, things have been said to suggest that KMY and YSJ's relationship had not progressed beyond the threshold ( Euphemism, euphemism... I'm sure we have under 18s here... hahaha). Any comments and thoughts? I find it sweet though, whatever the case may be, that he is so respectful before her mother. And so respectful of the boundaries KMY places on him. Ahhh... very much an officer and a gentleman...

The producers are trolls! They gave us the preview of them in the tent and clearly showed their feet in - uh - playful mode! But then nothing in the episode!

Although KMY's teasing in the coffee shop (ep 15) suggested that they might have some um experience (don't know /how/ far...)

Me too!!! I feel you! :( But at least that was one SATISFYING kiss to watch. Just WOW. Maybe I should reconsider my fear to not ship any OTP anymore. My last one and only ship sunk miserably so I am traumatized. But that kiss was so believable. That kiss was just W O W. It was soooooooo romantic. If I were SHK I would have fainted already. Such a great kisser SJK is, wow. I am having goosebumps just remembering that kiss alone. I wonder how these professional actors really feel when they kiss so passionately like that. Not just passionately but it was so filled with feelings. So romantic. So, SO romantic. So believable as YSJ-KMY.

Yup they kiss anywhere anytime and I'll watch it. *sigh*

Off to look for Chinese subs...
