Box-office hit 'Berlin File' to make Japanese debut in July

기사입력 2013-03-10 15:09 | 기사수정 2013-04-29 10:59

"The Berlin File," a South Korean box-office hit, will screen in Tokyo and other large cities in Japan beginning on July 13, distributors said on March 9.

Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, the spy thriller attracted more than 7 million moviegoers in South Korea in two months after its release in January, they said.

Production of the action film with a star-studded cast costed about 10 billion won, according to the distributors. The movie stars Ha Jung-woo, Han Suk-kyu, Ryu Seung-bum and Jun Ji-hyun.

The film made its debut in the United States in February.

Film Audiences Favor Grown-Up Experience

Ha Jung-woo and Kim Hye-soo have been voted the most popular actor and actress in Korea in a poll by the Chosun Ilbo and the country's biggest ticketing site Maxmovie. But Hwang Jung-min and Jeon Do-yeon were named as the best actor and actress.

20130430005460.jpg

◆ Mature Actors, Mature Audiences

Remarkably, most of the top 10 most popular actors and actresses are in their 30s to 50s, the only exception being Han Hyo-joo, who is in her 20s. The average age for male and female actors is 42.7 and 34.1.

Of the actors, only four are in their 30s, including Ha, Kang Dong-won and Won Bin. A large proportion of the entrants on the popularity list starred in hit movies over the past two years, but Won, Kang, Lee Na-young and Kim Tae-hee managed to stay popular by only appearing in commercials.

The average age of best actors is even higher. Except for Ha, all those in the top 10 are in their 40s or over, and the 10 best actresses are on average 41.7 years old.

Several veteran actors who did not make the most-popular list were instead recognized for their skill, including Yoon Yeo-jeong, Kim Hae-sook, Jang Young-nam and Moon So-ri.

Pundits attribute the preference for middle-aged actors to soaring numbers of moviegoers in the same age group. "The Korean film industry used to focus on viewers in their teens or 20s, but now it tries to accommodate diverse age groups. As more films target the middle-aged, they cast veteran actors in the same age bracket," said film critic Jeon Chan-il.

A film producer said, "Only five years ago, pretty young actors were almost guaranteed success at the box office, but now viewers don't want to see movies with bad actors any more. Regardless of appearance or age, actors with proven skill are most sought after now."

◆ New Directors

On the other hand, a generational shift seems to be taking place among directors. The people on the 10 best directors list have largely drawn over 10 million viewers in recent years, such as Choi Dong-hoon with "Thieves," Choo Chang-min with "Masquerade," and Lee Hwan-kyung with "Miracle in Cell No. 7."

Most of moviegoers had never heard of the last two before the success of their movies. But some prominent directors who once drew vast audiences did not make the list this time. There were no nods to Yoon Je-kyoon of "Haeundae," Lee Joon-ik of "The King and the Clown," and Kang Je-gyu of "Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War."

◆ Movie Theaters Win

Asked what their favorite way of watching movies is, 87.1 percent of respondents replied the theater, up from 61 percent in 2007. The proportion of those who prefer downloading movies on the Internet dwindled by half from 13.1 percent to 6.4 percent, and of those who favored cable channels by two-thirds from 14.5 percent to 4.8 percent.

Watching DVDs and videos plummeted from 9.6 percent to 0.7 percent over the same period.

Of the five factors influencing people's choice of films, online reviews from punters came only third. Kim Hyung-ho of Maxmovie explained that factors that are irrelevant to the film can come into play when netizens evaluate them. "Some people rate movies poorly just for fun," he said.

He added people are becoming more aware of how diverse tastes are and no longer consider other Internet users' comments very credible.

Instead, recommendations from friends and family came in second, rising from 10.3 percent to 18.8 percent.

[A total of 23,336 people participated in this email poll by Chosun Ilbo and maxmovie.com (korea's largest film ticketing site) from April 16th to the 23rd. Each participant's been to the cinema at least once between May 2012 to April 2013.]

Ha Jung Woo Invests $3 Million USD into New “Actortainer” Group

jnkm on May 1, 2013

Actor Ha Jung Woo has invested 3 billion won (about $3 million USD) into a new group of actors.

Ha Jung Woo is currently in the middle of creating a group that consists of five actors. Ha Jung Woo, who is working with his agency Fantagio, has been directly involved with the casting, directing and acting guidance for this group.

This project is being called “The Surprise,” and is garnering attention for its idol group training methods upon actors. These five rookie actors will become a team to work separately but also as a team. The foundation of the group is set on acting but these actors will also be able to sing and dance as well. This kind of “idol training” has never been done for actors before.

This project aims to create a a new branch of show business called the “actortainer,” putting together actor and entertainer into one. These days, while there are many idol singers who are stepping forth into acting, there hasn’t been many cases where actors step inside the music industry.

An entertainment business source commented, “In the past, Jang Gook Young and Yoo Duk Hwa showed great dance and singing skills although they were actors. These days, actors such as Jang Geun Suk and Lee Jun Ki are also exceptional at singing and dancing, which is why they are so successful overseas.”

Ha Jung Woo’s project differs from the normal actor management ways. In case of the music industry, singers can travel both in country and out-of-country for promotions, concerts and other activities. However, it is difficult for an actor to branch out in that way. Therefore, if this project succeeds, there are plans to throw big scale concerts featuring this actor group, both in Korea and overseas. It is reported that other investment companies are already looking at this project with interest.

The same entertainment business source added, “Ha Jung Woo is not only interested in acting but he is also interested in pop culture business. He is taking a large part in this project along with his agency.”

Thanks Rubie.  Last year's Baeksang was really lackluster, it was like whichever star showed up would take the prize (ie. TV Actor category).  I miss our old award threads where lots of us hung out.

Korea’s high-profile stars will gather at the annual Paeksang Arts Awards tomorrow to pick the most brilliant stars from the past year.

The 2013 Paeksang Arts Awards, which will open its curtains at the Peace Palace located in Kyung-hee University of Seoul on Thursday, disclosed its full nominations list via its official website last month.

The 49th edition of the awards ceremony will hand out its renowned awards in 14 divisions in the TV category and 13 divisions in the film category, out of all movies and dramas shown between April 1 of last year to March 31 of this year.

KBS family drama “My Husband Got a Family,” MBC costume drama “Light and Shadow,” jTBC’s melodrama “How Long I’ve Kissed,” SBS thriller “THE CHASER,” and KBS reality drama “School 2013” are the five TV series vying for the Best Drama award in the TV category.

K-pop idol band CNBLUE’s Lee Jung-shin has been nominated for Best New Actor for his TV debut role in “Seo-young, My Daughter,” while singer-and-actor Seo In-guk was nominated in the same list with his hit cable drama “Reply 1997.”

In the meantime, the awards ceremony venue will be heated up with the appearance of many top Korean celebrities including actor Hyun Bin, comedian Kang Ho-dong, U-ie of After School, Suzy of miss A, Kim Soo-hyun, Kong Hyo-jin, Uhm Jung-hwa and Park Ha-sun.

^ Indeed it's just too bad that the once highly popular award threads of soompi are now a distant thing in the past where most members would only look, wait and just look some more. Award threads are one-time events that need people to actively post.. yet hoping only one person doing it (most likely the threadstarter) at real-time.. posting those endless red carpet pics and the results, too.. undoubtedly have been the most discouraging factor. It is a big pity.. but as much as we want and love to, we really can't do everything. The reality of how things are.. truly sinking in.
But maybe for the 100% movie awards that were more lacklustre in nature (e.g. Blue Dragon, Daejong).. year-end tv drama awards are mostly still active as there are more Kdrama enthusiasts. So.. Baeksang which is 50-50 tv and movie.. would not be as bad. Hopefully.
Thanks for the great updates, good to have and see you back!

Ryu Seung-ryong gets top Paeksang Award

May 10, 2013

Winners are third from left: Kim Min-hee (Best Actress in Film); Yoo Jae-seok (Grand Prix in TV); Ryu Seung-ryong (Grand Prix in Film); Kim Hee-ae (Best Actress in TV); Ha Jeong-woo (Best Actor in Film); Son Hyun-joo (Best Actor in TV) and Ji Dae-han (Best New Actor in Film). [JoongAng Ilbo]

When the nominations for 49th edition of Paeksang Arts Awards were revealed last month, many guessed actor Ryu Seung-ryong would take home the Grand Prix last night.

“Gomawayo,” said Ryu, which means “Thank you” in Korean, in a tone of the intellectually disabled man, Yong-gu, whom he played in the melancholy movie “Miracle in Cell No. 7” as he went up onstage to receive the prize.

Although Ryu, 42, was relatively late in making a debut - in 2004 at age 35 - he rose quickly by starring in three hit films in the past year, “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” “Gwanghae” and “All About My Wife.”

09220027.jpg
Actresses show off their styles and figures on the red carpet. From left: Kim Hee-ae, Goo Eun-ae, Kim Ah-joong.

Despite a few drops of rain last night, celebrities walked down the red carpet in their best or worst dresses into the Grand Peace Hall of Kyung Hee University in central Seoul, smiling and waving at cameras and fans in hopes of taking home one of this year’s Paeksang Arts Awards.

Organized by JTBC and Ilgan Sports, this year’s Paeksang Arts Awards seemed to have found charms in “social drama.”

“The Chaser,” an SBS television drama series about a grieving detective father who seeks revenge against corrupt power and JTBC’s “A Wife’s Credential,” that deals with the forbidden romance of a married man and woman but also the zealous private education craze of Gangnam District, took home major awards. In the movie category, “Gwanghae, The Man Who Became King,” that depicts the intense aspiration of a leader, stood out among others, taking home the Grand Prize Picture Award {Grand Prize went to Ryu Seung-ryong (Miracle in Cell No. 7)}, as well as the Director Award and the Screenplay Award {Screenplay Award won by Jeong Byung-gil (Confession of Murder)}.

The Paeksang Arts Awards, the country’s leading awards that encompass the realms of film and television, was established for the morale of the development of Korean pop culture, art and artists in 1965. Yesterday’s Paeksang Arts Awards, which was emceed by actress Kim Ah-joong, actor Joo Won and announcer Oh Sang-jin, was aired live via JTBC from 6 p.m.

In the television category, comedian and TV host Yoo Jae-seok won the Grand Prix. Yoo has been winning grand prizes in numerous awards for being the best in the business. His No. 1 spot for this year’s Paeksang Arts Awards is also for his accomplishment in the SBS variety show, “Running Man,” which secures the No. 1 spot in its time slot with viewers’ ratings, reaching the 20 percent mark each time.

Best Actor and Best Actress in the television category went to actor Son Hyun-joo, 48, from “The Chaser” and actress Kim Hee-ae, 46, from “A Wife’s Credentials.” Son’s 21 years of acting on small screens, followed by impressive acting skills, should’ve given him showers of honors, but he’s been unlucky when it comes to awards. Last night, he finally fulfilled his “long-cherished desire.” On the other hand, this year’s award was Kim’s fifth award at Paeksang since its establishment. She had previously won the Best New Actress, Best Actress and two Grand Prix awards.

The drama “The Chaser” didn’t only make Son smile. It became the most awarded work last night, winning the Best Screenplay Award, and the Best Drama Award.

Unlike previous years, dramas from cable channels like JTBC’s “Wife’s Credentials” and tvN’s “Respond 1997” also achieved good results, presenting the Best Actress Award to Kim and Best New Actress Award to Jeong Eun-ji who starred in the dramas, respectively.

In the movie category, Best Actor and Best Actress awards went to Ha Jeong-woo and Kim Min-hee. Meanwhile, Ji Dae-han, a 12-year-old child actor, who is from a multicultural family, was the youngest winner yesterday, taking home the Best New Actor Award for the film, “My Little Hero.”

Ryu Seung-ryong wins top prize at Paeksang

Published : 2013-05-10 20:25

Actor Ryu Seung-ryong won the grand prize at the 49th Paeksang Arts Awards on Thursday for his performance as the mentally disabled man with the mind of a 6-year-old child in this year’s box-office hit drama “Miracle in Cell No. 7.”

“‘Miracle in Cell No. 7’ is a low-budget film with a number of flaws,” said Ryu after accepting the prize. “I think a lot of people liked the film, in spite of its shortcomings, because it stood by those who are marginalized in society.”

Meanwhile, actress Kim Min-hee took home the top acting award for her role as a bank clerk in a dysfunctional relationship with her coworker in “Very Ordinary Couple,” while actor Ha Jung-woo won for his performance as a North Korean agent in “The Berlin File.”

“I would like to thank my costar Lee Min-ki and director Roh Deok who helped me to shape my character Young on the screen,” Kim said during her acceptance speech upon receiving the honor.

Actor Ha thanked his crew and costars after receiving the prize. “Thank you, thank you very much,” he said. “I am grateful that a lot of people watched this film. I would like to thank my costars and crew members. I will continue making entertaining films.”

SERIAL STAR: HA JUNG-WOO

A chilling serial killer, better known as a lucrative and particular client of a ruthless detective turned pimp, starts to prey on the women sent to service him. When is secret is discovered, not only is his world turned upside down, but his skilled performer‘s as well. For Korean actor Ha Jung-woo, his portrayal of a psychopath loosely based on real-life murder Yoo Young-chul provided a dazzling boost to his fledgling career. Indeed, based on his appearance in Na Hong-jin’s The Chaser, Martin Scorsese is said to have praised his work, an enviable comment for even the most seasoned thespian.

In the aftermath of The Chaser’s success, an array of best actor accolades were thrust Ha’s way, however this was not his first taste of awards glory. Three years prior, his efforts in a feature-length graduation film on the topic of military service – The Unforgiven – earned him a trio of best new actor prizes. More would come in later roles, including box office hit Take Off and deadpan comedy My Dear Enemy. His second collaboration with Na, The Yellow Sea, would also furnish the actor with additional trophies for his mantle, as well as solidifying his absorbing, intense screen presence.

Across parts large and small since his sitcom debut in Honest Living ten years ago, Ha has become one of Korea’s most compelling and captivating cinematic figures. Such a description may be expected given his recent penchant for darker content, yet it proves pertinent regardless of thematic context. As a bodyguard in romantic television series Lovers in Charge, and as a prosecutor in police procedural H.I.T., he transcended stereotypes to remain a focal point of interest. His transformation from small screen love interest to big screen protagonist in a matter of years further epitomises his command of the audience’s attention.

Along the way, Ha’s versatility and diversity has attracted many of Korea’s most notable directors. Kim Ki-Duk (In Time and Breath), Hong Sang-soo (Like You Know It All) and Yun Jong-bin (The Unforgiven, Beastie Boys and Nameless Gangster) have each utilised his talents, whilst Gina Kim (Never Forever) attempted to break him into the American market. Yet, still he returns to the action, crime and thriller genres. With more on the horizon – Ryoo Seung-wan’s In Berlin and Kimm Bonn’s No Cops with Wedding Rings included – his star will only continue to rise, still ascending after his first serial killer performance.
