*** TODAY, October 30th, more events were postponed and canceled to spend a period of mourning after last night’s tragedy in Itaewon. Newly released film  “Confession” canceled the appearance of cast members and directors at theaters to greet audiences. Condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy and wish for the speedy recovery of those who were injured.

*** According to data from Korean Film Council on October 28th, "Confession"  topped the box office by attracting 28,429 moviegoers on its second day of release. The movie ranked second on its premiere day, garnering over 40,000 viewers. Although it rose to the top spot the next day, only 20,000 people bought tickets for the movie, resulting in an extreme drop in audience. I hope SJS's movie will do well at the box office. Few moviegoers went to theaters to watch movies. Viewers are becoming more and more cautious in choosing what movies to watch due to the rising cost of movie tickets. Results also suggest positive word of mouth plays a major role in attracting spectators to movie theaters. I hope "Confession" will gear up to attract more moviegoers for the upcoming weekend.

*** On October 24 episode of SBS POWER FM's radio show 'Choi Hwa-jeong's Power Time', actress Kim Yun-jin shared how different So Jisub looks before and after he begins shooting a project. Both made a guest appearance. During the talk, she recalled the moment when she met So Jisub for the first time for their movie 'Confession' 6-months ago. She continued, "It was because his face was half the size of the face that I saw months ago. I could tell that he was a very strict person when it came to managing and taking care of himself."  He responded, "There's no secret to it though. I just try to exercise regularly. There is nothing that I routinely do in particular, but I do go to

*** In a recent media interview, these are the latest shares of So Ji Sub after 2 years of marriage with a wife 17 years younger than him. He admitted that they fell in love with each other at first sight, “It is true that we fell in love at first sight. But not right on the set. I kept thinking about this. until I got home after filming the interview. When I look at her, I am very worried because the age difference is quite large. That’s it. It’s obvious. The older I get, the more I love with my head, not with my heart. Even so, my heart flutters.”  He said that he would regret it if he did not actively contact his wife at that time. “I contacted her through an acquaintance. We first met with a mutual friend. *** During his interview with the media, So Ji Sub recalls a strange experience he felt while filming the movie "Confession". In the movie, he delivered a variety of emotions as his character experience anger, resentment, anxiety, and desperation after being suspected of murdering a person. With this, he revealed that he experienced strange nightmares while filming the movie. "When I was sleeping, I suffered from nightmares of beating someone or chasing after me," he said, adding that once the filming was over, the strange dreams stopped. He also shared what prompted him to accept the offer and headline this movie. He mentioned that he was moved by the storyline and was curious how each chapter will end. After its theatrical release last October 26th, the movie received an overwhelming response from the public.

In a report released by the Korea Film Council (KOFIC) yesterday October 31st, "Confession" gathered more than 170,000 people for three days over the weekend and ranked first in the box office. Lotte Entertainment is the primary distributor of So Ji Sub's movie.

Thrilling plot leaves viewers with full buckets of popcorn in 'Confession'

Director Yoon Jong-seok’s “Confession,” which released in local theaters last month, is a remake of the Spanish original film “The Invisible Guest” (2016) that revolves around uncovering the primary suspect of a murder case. [LOTTE ENTERTAINMENT]

 
Even without a star-studded cast, a solid, gripping plot may be all some films need to find commercial success.
 
Such was the case for films “Luck-key” (2016), which sold 6.97 million tickets, and “Intimate Strangers” (2018), which sold 5.29 million tickets — commendable numbers especially considering their mid-scale budgets. Both were remakes of Japanese and Italian original films, where local creators made the necessary adjustments to turn them into Korean stories that would suit the tastes of local viewers.
 
Similarly to how these smaller films reeled in their audiences, twist after twist draws viewers in to the mystery thriller remake film “Confession,” which was released in local theaters on Oct. 26.

 

“It’s a well-made film full of thrills and twists. I loved the cast’s ensemble. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a film that could capture my undivided attention.”
 
“I was completely immersed in the story because the scenario of the original movie was so tightly knit.”
 
“It’s a mystery novel seen through moving pictures. The twists are interesting as well.”
 
Such were a few of the many reviews giving the film 10 out of 10 stars on Naver’s film rating section. Reviews elsewhere on social media claim that they “didn’t even have time to reach for popcorn” because they were so immersed in the film and its gripping narrative.
 

The main plot of the remake and the original film is similar: A promising entrepreneur is knocked out by a mysterious intruder, and when he regains consciousness, he finds his mistress murdered. [WARNER BROS PICTURES, LOTTE ENTERTAINMENT]

 
"Confession" is a remake of the Spanish film “The Invisible Guest” (2016), which had sold about 90,000 tickets during its time in theaters — a reasonable number of sales made considering the fact that it did not involve any well-known stars.
 
The original film revolves around a secret that is unveiled as an entrepreneur claims innocence to his lawyer in a hotel room.
 
Director Yoon Jong-seok, who debuted in 2009 with the film “Marine Boy,” wrote the script and directed “Confession,” adding settings familiar from within Korean society for the audience to better understand the motive behind the protagonists’ actions.
 
One such change is that the protagonist, portrayed by So Ji-sub, is not only a promising IT entrepreneur but also a son-in-law to a chaebol family. The entrepreneur claims that he was summoned to a hotel room by his mistress, portrayed by Nana, after she threatened to publicly expose their affair. After regaining consciousness after a mysterious attack, So finds his mistress has been murdered. Part of the urgency of proving his innocence to his lawyer is the man’s desire to avoid divorce, which is highly likely to affect his business.

Moviegoers also have trouble believing the man’s claims as, during the time of crisis, he often uses power play to achieve the results he wants.
 
The tables turn against him when his lawyer, portrayed by Kim Yoon-jin, proposes a new hypothesis about what had happened at the hotel room.
 
The overall take of the remake is similar to the original — the lawyer, from the first moment she meets her client, convinces him to tell the whole truth so that she could form an ironclad alibi which would free him from the murder case. What makes "Confession" unique, however, is the detailed explanations behind the motives, peeled off layer by layer, which have been altered to suit the local sentiments.
 
The Korean remake, however, removed the premise that the characters used physical disguises to hide their identities, considering the local audience’s distaste for improbable or unnatural settings.
 
At a recent online interview with the JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, director Yoon emphasized that “the most evident distinction between the original and the remake is the depth of characters’ emotions,” which Yoon took great care in from the casting process.

So, whose entrepreneur is to project a reliable and decent image to the local public, was picked for his model image so that the audience could be fooled by his character’s claims. So's entrepreneur is more sharp-witted than the character from the original film, ready to take action at a moment’s notice.
 
For the lawyer, Kim kept her cool-headedness to emphasize her character’s profession, and to up the impact of her twist near the end of the film.

Viewers have also praised Nana’s acting. When the two protagonists propose different truths, the intention, motive and the actions taken by Nana’s mistress change drastically, which the actor pulls off magnificently. The actors were said to have plenty of time for rehearsals, similar to a stage play, to synchronize their tones and styles.
 
It was also Yoon’s decision to change the main setting of the film from an apartment complex in the city to a secluded villa owned by the wife’s family, to dramatize the overall mood of the narrative in hopes that the audience would be able to focus more on the shifting dynamics between the characters set in the isolated scenery.
 
Criminal profiler Kwon Il-yong, who attended the panel discussion at a screening on Oct. 19 prior to the film’s release, complimented the portrayal of the characters’ changing psychology around the case.
 
“It closely resembled the analysis of criminal scenes I’ve experienced,” he noted. “When profilers decipher a case, they look at the scene branching out in multiple possibilities [and multiple suspects]. Then, one by one, they eliminate them and find evidence supporting the most probable scenario.”

According to the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), Confession dominated the weekend box office with 172,278 audiences and 35.5% sales from November 4 to 6. *** On November 7th, a video titled “So Ji Sub’s sweet moment! I asked So Ji Sub about manners in person” was released on the official YouTube channel of magazine Singles. He took time to answer questions. First of all, to the question “What manners mean for So Ji Sub, who is famous for his good manners with the nickname ‘Soganji’?” He answered, “I am embarrassed to say this with my own mouth, but to me, it seems to mean interest and consideration. Because if you are interested, you can be considerate.”  Then, he was asked, “If you still cook, what is your most recent dish?”, to which he replied, “I haven’t been cooking recently.
