*** I'm soooo looking forward to watch this, too. And Kwon Sang Woo as a male lead is going to be hotter than almost anything else on. I like CIP, too….really I do - he’s handsome... When I watched the trailer I was like “Ooooh! Extreme! Definitely watching that!” - love it. Anything with KSW is great! He does seem to have good screen presence. I’m really curious about KSW’s journey from escort to prosecutor. When I see his sexy body especially that abs, my face blushes. He got the best sets. And this is a different type of drama that’s for sure. Daemul looks really interesting. I think it’ll have fair ratings. KSW looks interesting in this, not his usual pretty boy image. Ahhhh....sooo many things to watch! KSW aja aja fighting! :sweatingbullets:

New Daemul trailer and stills

daemul34.jpg

With My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho nearing its end, SBS’s new Wednesday-Thursday show, Daemul, is preparing to go on the air. (It premieres October 6.)

Here are a few trailers, as well as new stills that show lead actress Go Hyun-jung as a television broadcast announcer, which was her career before being elected president. While the first trailer to come out was lighter in tone, the new ones have a much different vibe — more forceful, urgent, and with a more serious bent.

(Note about the title: Daemul is slang meaning “big shot,” which many of you have noted is also in use in Sungkyunkwan Scandal. Neither drama originated the term, though it just so happens that both will be on the air at the same time.)

This trailer came out first, and focuses on the relationship between Go Hyun-jung and Kwon Sang-woo — who does appear to be an escort/host in the beginning (yay!). He meets Go when he’s still an escort, then becomes a prosecutor, which means they’ve conflated two characters into one (in the original, one brother was the escort and another the prosecutor).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Weo1qyyydI&feature=player_embedded

These two trailers are newer, and focus more on the political tensions brewing after Go’s character becomes president.

Can Rain, Kwon restore images?

All eyes will be on Rain and actor Kwon Sang-woo, as they look to rebound from a series of setbacks that made tabloid headlines in previous months, with a pair of highly anticipated television series set to air this and next week.

(skipped unrelated.....)

Meanwhile, Kwon will likely have his fingers crossed that the premiere of Rain’s show receives a warm welcome as it will be an accurate gauge of whether the public is willing to forgive and forget.

20100927000860_0.jpg

The “Stairway to Heaven” heartthrob has been through a hailstorm of controversy after being involved in a late-night hit and run in June.

On June 12, the Seoul Central District Court slapped Kwon with a 7 million won ($6 thousand) fine for fleeing the scene after driving into a pair of parked sedans ― one of which was a police cruiser.

According to police reports, Kwon fled the scene on foot at around 2:55 a.m. after he crashed into a Genesis sedan and reversed into a police cruiser, before crashing into a tree that put a stop to his Cadillac.

Many have speculated that the actor fled the scene because he was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Many critics believe Kwon has an even steeper hill to climb than Rain with such serious charges levied against him.

But like Rain’s program, Kwon’s upcoming series carries with it a cast of big name veteran actors that includes Koh Hyun-jeong playing the first female president of Korea, Cha In-pyo, and Lee Soo-young.

Demands for the 34-year-old actor to step down from the show were hurled by the public since the investigation into the incident has yet to be completed.

Whether the two popular performers will be able to bounce back from such serious setbacks may become a cautionary tale for all up and coming stars and starlets.

Ko shows promise as first female president on tube

The buzz surrounding SBS’ new Wednesday-Thursday night series, “Dae Mul,” has been deafening.

Why? Primarily because it runs on the sensational premise that a former broadcasting network announcer manages to earn herself a permanent place in history as the first female president of Korea.

Add to that the fact that former Grand National Party chairwoman, Park Geun-hye, is currently viewed as one of the GNP’s strongest candidates for the 2012 presidential race, despite her remarks to the contrary, and it is clear why the upcoming series has been garnering so much interest.

Lead actress Ko Hyeon-jeong showed a moment of anxiety at the drama’s press conference Wednesday, saying, “I am worried,” before cementing her faith in her director and affirming that she has been working hard at this role.

However, the preview reel that showed at the press event at Lotte Hotel World in Jamsil was more than promising.

Diva-extraordinaire Ko shed her “The Great Queen Seondeok” femme fatale skin for a strong yet comic stint as a reporter-turned-presidential hopeful with spunk in spades.

Whether or not her performance as presidential candidate Seo Hye-rim will bear any resemblance to former President Park Chung-hee’s eldest daughter, however, remains to be seen.

One thing is for certain, though Ko’s new heroine bears little resemblance to the scheming Mishil she played with such bravado in the hit MBC series “The Great Queen Seondeok.”

“Because Mishil was someone who dreamed the impossible, I guess in that sense there are similarities,” said the 39-year-old actress. “But Seo Hye-rim is pretty much the girl-next-door who ends up becoming president. So I guess that is a primary difference.”

Indeed, Ko’s Seo is bright, optimistic and seems to be pure-of-heart, which is why her upbeat character seems to be so at odds with the potentially controversial title of the series, “Dae Mul.”

The word “Dae Mul” harbors many meanings, primarily all revolving around the overarching definition, which means “big object.” But it is because the word carries strongly phallic connotations that it may initially seem to clash with its female-centric subject matter.

“It is a bit of an awkward title to use,” the series’ director, Oh Jong-rok, admitted at the press conference.

Oh, however was quick to dispel any questions regarding the title of the series, asserting that it is the original title of the comic book series that the drama is based on and that it also serves as the name for the project that is instituted within the series to turn Seo Hye-rim (Ko Hyeon-jeong) into Korea’s first female president.

Hallyu star Kwon Sang-woo’s character, former prosecutor Ha Doh-ya, spearheads the project to spring Seo into the Blue House.

“I play an important role in helping Seo Hye-rim become president,” said Kwon, who added that his character is more cheerful than serious.

Veteran actor Cha In-pyo will also be starring in the series as Seo’s rival for the presidential candidacy.

It will be interesting to see how viewers respond to this politically-charged series, especially because it may foretell the future success of KBS’ upcoming president-themed series, which is slated to air in December with veteran Choi Soo-jong cast as the lead.

“Dae Mul” airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:55 p.m. on SBS starting Oct. 6.

*** He doesn't have to apologize many times.....Now, he apologized again deeply. He already realized his mistake ever since. People should have accepted it. Even if he is a celebrity he is still human so people don't have to expect him to do everything perfectly. What makes US judge someone like Kwon Sang Woo, we're not perfect, too? People sometimes are OA! Hit and run is a big deal but he didn't hit a person. This has been blown out of proportion. I can’t understand why such a case is stretched to this extent.

Kwon Sang Woo apologizes for “causing a disturbance”

20100929_daemul_1-460x354.jpg

Immersed in a controversy for a ‘hit and run’ incident back in June, Kwon Sang Woo has made an official apology at the production conference for SBS’s “Dae Mul” on September 29th.

At that time, Kwon Sang Woo first apologized to his Japanese fans, causing the scandal to worsen amongst his Korean fans. Soon after, he immediately began filming for “Dae Mul” without taking any time for reflection.

Moments after climbing the stage, Kwon Sang Woo stated, “I’d first like to apologize for not being able to set a better example to my juniors and for causing a disturbance through my accident.”

He then concluded by bowing deeply, demonstrating his sincere regret.

20100929_ksw_01.jpg

In June, Kwon Sang Woo hit a police car and ran from the scene, making this his first official statement regarding the issue.

Netizens were not quick to accept the apology, however, commenting, “What the citizens are requesting is not an apology but for the law to take responsibility,” “If it was anyone else, they’d be jailed for this hit-and-run accident,” “Kwon Sang Woo needs to face the law. How dare he try to push the entire controversy onto his manager and appear with a clean face as if he’s done nothing wrong?” and “A true apology is taking responsibility for your actions.”

[PREVIEW] SBS TV series "The President"

2010093016261002495_1.jpg

From left, actors Cha In-pyo, Kwon Sang-woo, Ko Hyun-jung and Lee Soo-kyung pose during a photocall of a press conference for SBS TV series "The President" held at the Lotte Hotel in Jamsil of Seoul, South Korea on September 29, 2010. [sBS]

Anchorwoman Seo Hae-rim (played by Ko Hyun-jung), who gets fired while protesting about her husband's undeserved death, enters politics by proposal of Kang Tae-san (played by Cha In-pyo) who is a member of the ruling party and a strong candidate for the next presidential elections. With the help of Ha Doya (played by Kwon Sang-woo) he had known since her childhood days, Seo Hae-rim eyes the position of president as well and Kang Tae-san, who has no thoughts of yielding to Seo, become rivals and clash against each other.

SBS TV series "The President," whose press conference was held September 29, was full of traces from certain incidents and characters from real life. SBS' drama department director Koo Bon-geun said, "Please look at this as just a drama that is completely unrelated to modern day politics," but it does not seem like it will be easy to separate it completely from reality in how from the first episode, incidents such as the sinking of a submarine and impeachment of a president appear. The sunken submarine, the controversy over humiliating diplomacy, an impeached president, a camera reporter who loses his life after being kidnapped in a disputed area, and a beautiful curator who uses artwork to lobby. "The President," which contains incidents which can be recognized by anyone who has watched even a little bit of news, is a fantasy and as well as satire of Korea's political scene.

"The President" is based on the second of the series of artist Park In-kwon's comic of the same name. The main story of the drama is no different from the original story in that it can be summarized as 'The project to create Korea's first female president,' but it differentiates itself in the characteristics of the main characters and its structure. Seo Hae-rim's job has changed from being a female human rights lawyer to an anchorwoman-turned- environmental activist. The role of a back-stabbing womanizer-turned prosecutor that Kwon Sang-woo has taken on has changed as well -- he is a combination of the Ha Doya and Ha Ryu brothers from the comic. How the absence of Ha Ryu who was a key character in the comic, will be substituted will be crucial to the series.

In the end, "The President" is about 'the good president that all citizens want.' Seo Hae-rim is close to the fantasy for viewers who dream of the ideal president but the incidents derived from reality suggest that "The President" will not end as a mere fantasy. The show's director Oh Jong-rok said, "It makes me think our society has become open enough for us to tell this sort of story through a drama but on the other hand, nothing is as polarized as when it comes to politics so I am still wondering how I can balance the story." It sounds similar to the difficulties Seo Hae-rim will have to face in her task to capture the hearts of people who are divided up with dramatic opinions. The first episode of "The President" will air at 9:55 p.m. on October 6.

Kwon Sang-woo says pondered over "President" after car accident

2010093018073764314_1.jpg

Actor Kwon Sang-woo on Wednesday appeared in front of the public for the first time since being charged with fleeing the scene of a car accident, apologizing for the incident and saying he almost reconsidered playing his role in upcoming SBS TV seires "The President."

"In the beginning, I felt bad for whichever actor I ran into on set and was worried I would be a burden for the series, so I even thought of whether I should take on this drama or not," the 34-year-old actor said after apologizing for the incident during a press conference for the show.

He also admitted he had been "very low on confidence" but said he decided to present himself to the audience because "whether whipped or praised for the incident, I am someone who is known as an actor to many people."

He then thanked his co-stars Ko Hyun-jung and Cha In-pyo for their support. "They give me good energy, even just with their expressions. I've recovered a lot of my confidence while filming with them," Kwon explained.

Ko plays the role of the woman dreaming to become Korea's first female president and Cha her rival, a strong presidential candidate of the ruling party. Kwon is a male gigolo who tries to help Ko's character achieve her dream.

Based on a popular comic series of the same name, the series is set to air starting October 6 after current drama "My Girlfriend is Gumiho" starring Lee Seung-gi and Shin Min-ah ends its run.

In late July, a court had fined Kwon seven million won, equivalent to nearly 6,000 dollars, for deserting the scene of an accident he caused after crashing into several vehicles in mid-June. He was charged with not taking immediate action for the damage.

Will female president appeal to TV drama fans?

1010051401.jpg

By Han Sang-hee

The year 2010 may be slowly coming to an end, but the local drama scene is hotter than ever. With KBS featuring the Rain-led ``Runaway’’ and MBC relying on heartthrob Kim Hyun-joong’s ``Playful Kiss,’’ the Wednesday/Thursday slot is expecting fierce competition with a new SBS series ``Daemul’’ scheduled for Wednesday night.

In terms of the storyline, it seems that the cartoon-based ``Daemul’’ could manage to attract viewers with its ``first female president’’ card, but viewers will have to wait and see if the actors will be able to live up to the expectations.

Seo Hae-rim, played by actress Ko Hyun-jeong, is a plain yet pretty anchorwoman but manages to make history as the first female president after the death of her war correspondent husband. The makers explained that the 24-episode series will be about an ordinary woman who becomes president: how and why she became head of state and also the complicated schemes and plots surrounding her, her presidency, allies and enemies.

``The drama made me realize how open we have become when it comes to themes. Working on politics was also worrisome, as it’s such a touchy issue, and so we had to keep balance and harmony in mind at all times,’’ said Oh Jong-rok, producer and the maker of the SBS drama ``Style.’’

Among the numerous actresses in Korea, it would be rather difficult to pinpoint someone fit for a president, but it seems SBS managed to find the perfect match.

Actress Ko, who played the charismatic femme fatale Mi-shil in the hit period drama ``The Great Queen Seon-deok,’’ will return as Seo and show off her charisma once again. The sticky part in this scenario is that the two characters ― Mi-shil and Seo ― are quite similar: outspoken, independent and stubborn. This may cast a shadow on Ko’s ambitions, but the 39-year-old said that she was already aware of the worries.

``The moment I fall into carelessness is the most dangerous. I am trying to fully understand my character at all times and try to be attentive. I won’t fall slack just because I’m used to such a headstrong character,’’ she said. ``Tell me when you think I’m getting loose,’’ she added to reporters with a smile.

Finding pace may be a bit harder for fellow actor Kwon Sang-woo, however, as the drama is the first after his hit and run incident that took place last June. The 34-year-old looked a bit nervous from the start of the press event, and before he said anything else about the drama and his character, he expressed his feelings on the incident for the first time after it happened.

``First of all, I would like to say I am sorry to have caused such a mess due to the accident,’’ he said with a grim expression.

Ironically, Kwon will play the rags-to-riches character Ha Do-ya, who becomes a prosecutor.

It was evident that he was nervous in front of all the cameras and reporters, and when asked how he felt, he sighed and went on.

``I’m probably the most painful person on set and it’s true that I have lost my confidence. But I came to realize that since I became known for acting, the foremost important thing would be showing myself through work,’’ he said.

Another worrisome actor is Lee Soo-kyeong, who will appear as the femme fatale curator Jang Se-jin. The 28-year-old actress looked as frightened as a deer at the press conference, probably because she has always appeared as stress-free, happy and bubbly characters in previous works, and it was evident that she needed a confidence boost.

``This is actually a very new challenge for me. The role is completely different from what I have been doing,’’ she said.

Even fellow actor Cha In-pyo expressed his concerns, saying that she was trying hard to portray the dark and mean cold image but her eyes seem to be showing otherwise.

Different or not, this will be the chance for Lee to prove what she has as a serious actress and further open the door to more versatile roles.

Lastly, Cha In-pyo will appear as Ko’s competitive congressman Kang Tae-san. Unlike the other three actors, it seems Cha is in for a treat, as he was not afraid to show off his charisma and play the part of the cold-hearted and ambitious character. The 43-year-old actor admitted that it was hard for him to fully understand and depict the character as he is already a congressman from the beginning, but he explained he tried to do his homework.

``I monitored some clips of the speeches given by the late president Roh Moo-hyun, but he didn’t really fit my character. I got to watch some hearings by the National Assembly on my day off and I think all of the congressman appearing at the hearing gave me a vague idea of what I was going for,’’ he said.

It will obviously take some time for viewers to fully appreciate the casts’ efforts shown on the small screen, especially with Rain, Daniel Henney and Kim Jyun-joong stealing the spotlight on other networks. Hopefully, however, ``Daemul’’ will be able to win the hearts of viewers with its cast and plot, marking a success for the drama featuring the first female president.
