Criticism is just criticism it never ends. Journalists are the one who sparks the criticisms. They're the one who fabricate stories. Everybody in his/her lifetime sure make at least one or more mistakes. As long as one corrected. One or KSW cannot satisfy pleases everyone (there always pros and cons) there is no such thing is right or wrong depends on whom views it and make his/her own judgement. But come to think of it. Whom should we make judgement? We should look at ourselves no one is absolutely perfect. KSW fighting !!!! B)

Ridiculous! I dun understand what standards are Koreans followings to be a good person?

He made mistake then he appologized. Thats all!!

Japan first or Korea first is not a problem, as long as he did hand-writting to them to have their sympathy!

they dun know that his AGENCY IS A JAPANESE OWNED? fury.gif Thats why they published it first ..!  or they wanna see him on his knee infront of each KOREAN netizen?

So rude public... Being a star is quite difficult, being a star in Korea is the most difficult TO LIVE !!  No wonder why most of Korean BIG STARS are concentrating into foreign countries where they are open heart and arms ... So bad that in their homeland ppl are to make judgment and curses!!

Court orders Kwon Sang-woo to pay 7 mln won fine

20100511075747005876643_00000007_1_PA.jpg

Korean actor Kwon Sang-woo has been fined seven million won by a court for fleeing the scene of an accident in which Kwon collided into several vehicles in mid-June.

Judge Kim Se-jong of the Seoul Central District Court on Thursday handed a summary order of seven million won, equivalent to nearly 6,000 dollars, to the 33-year-old actor for the incident.

Two weeks ago, prosecutors had summarily indicted Kwon five million won for the same case, charging him with not taking immediate action for the damage he inflicted.

"It seems the justice department made the rare decision of imposing a higher fine on Kwon than the sum he was indicted for in consideration of the social responsibility he holds as a popular celebrity and the fact that he fled from the accident at the time," explained a court official.

A month ago, Kwon had made headlines after it became belatedly known that the actor had crashed into several vehicles including a police car near Seoul's Cheongdam-dong district during the early hours of June 12.

He had abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene soon after, only showing up at the police station two days later to undergo investigation for the incident.

No casualties were involved and there was no evidence that Kwon had been drunk driving at the time he caused the accident. Kwon himself had also denied driving under the influence of alcohol.

Kwon had shot to fame throughout Asia after starring in the 2003 TV series "Stairway to Heaven", which co-starred another Hallyu star Choi Ji-woo.

He recently starred in war pic "71 - Into The Fire" and will be appearing in upcoming TV series "Big Thing" alongside top Korean actress Ko Hyun-jung.

Special screening of "71-Into the Fire" held in U.S.

2010072914101221386_1.jpg

Korean war film "71-Into the Fire" has been shown in three cities in North America, according to movie's producer Taewon Entertainment on Thursday.

A press release from Taewon announced that special screenings for the film were held in New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta on July 27, three days ahead of its premiere in fourteen other cities in the United States.

In New York, “Fire” was shown at the AMC Empire 25 theaters, making it the first ever Korean film to be featured at the movie complex. In Los Angeles, the movie was shown at the MPark4, a theater that shows many Korean flicks, and at the AMC Discover Mills 18 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The war epic will be shown in cities including New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Seattle, Chicago and Virginia once its premieres on July 30.

“Fire” has garnered much attention from overseas, particularly in the United States. Korean actor Kwon Sang-woo and director Lee Jae-han attended a special seminar commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Korean War at Stanford University's Asia-Pacific Center and the pic has officially been invited as the closing film for the 30th Hawaii International Film Festival in mid-October.

"71-Into the Fire," helmed by famed director Lee, is based a true story of 71 student soldiers who fought during the Korean War. It stars top Korean stars Kwon, Chan Seung-won, Kim Seung-woo and T.O.P from idol group Big Bang,

The film opened in local theaters on June 16 and has accumulated over 3.3 million admissions to date. It has also maintained a spot within the top 10 of the Korean box office.

Kwon Sang-woo handed W7m fine for hit-and-run

Actor Kwon Sang-woo has been slapped with a heftier fine than usual for the June 12 hit and run incident that caused a media frenzy.

The Seoul Central District Court ordered the “Into the Fire” star Thursday to pay a 7 million won fine for fleeing the scene of an accident he caused last month.

The judgment handed to him is 2 million won more than the usual fine imposed by the Seoul Central District Court for hit and run charges involving only property damage.

The additional penalty was tacked on by the court, which said that the 34-year-old Hallyu star “had a social responsibility to maintain as a public figure.”

Kwon was booked without detention after turning himself in on June 14, two days after the incident.

He was charged with fleeing the scene of a vehicular accident after driving into a pair of parked cars -- one of which was a police cruiser -- then a tree.

According to police reports, Kwon fled the scene on foot at around 2:55 a.m. on June 12, after he had crashed into a Genesis sedan and reversed into a police cruiser before hitting a nearby tree that put a stop to his Cadillac.

Many have speculated that the actor fled the scene because he was under the influence of alcohol at the time. However, Kwon later stated that he ran away out of fear.

Soon after the incident was widely publicized, his agent released an official statement saying the accident was caused by Kwon’s inexperience behind the wheel.

20100729000822_0.jpg

No comments were made on suspicions that Kwon might have been intoxicated at the time of the accident.

While many had expected his troubles with the law to affect box office figures for his latest film, “Into the Fire,” the Korean War picture has attracted respectable attendance figures thus far, with ticket sales passing 3 million since its release on June 16.

As a result of his involvement in the hit and run case, producers of the film and Kwon’s camp have excluded him from nationwide promotional tours.

On June 21, Kwon released a handwritten letter of apology to fans through his official website.

“To all my fans and those who care about me, I can only bow my head and apologize,” he wrote. “For about a month I have been spending time alone at home reflecting on my regrettable actions.

“As a public figure, I should have known better and should have acted by the laws of our society. But because of my misguided judgment at the time I have disappointed you all and I am deeply hurt because of it.”

Kwon is set to be back on the small screen in October with the upcoming SBS television series “Dae Mul” co-starring Koh Hyun-jung and Cha In-pyo.

'Ugly' stars bounce back too easily

By Park Si-soo

Staff reporter

100730_p01_ugly.jpg

Several top entertainers have recently made headlines not with their hit movies or songs but by taking the role of villain in the real world. But such celebrities are rarely held accountable for their wrongdoings and seem to bounce back easily after a short time out of the spotlight.

Popular actor Kwon Sang-woo’s brazen handling of his hit-and-run last month is a typical case in point. He rammed into two cars, ran away, kept mum for two days and denied allegations of drunk driving, drawing public outcry.

It was the latest in a series of law breakings and misconduct committed by top stars.

Fueling public outrage was the “preferential treatment” given to the 34-year-old actor by the authorities, which ignored its own rule that stipulates suspects in such cases must be detained during investigation. Kwon was simply slapped with a 7-million-won fine.

Spitting on one’s own face

Critics say the “structured tolerance” toward wrongdoings by showbiz heavyweights like Kwon is making other top-shelf entertainers feel less guilty for their mishaps.

“It no longer comes as a surprise to see celebrities lying and distorting facts to avoid public criticism,” said Kang Tae-gyu, a pop culture critic. “The truth is bound to be unveiled. But they keep trying to cover it up despite the fact that this will amount to spitting on their own faces in the end.”

Kwon’s case is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the problems of the industry, which the government has lauded as an emerging growth engine and gateway to promote Korea overseas.

In recent memory alone, many actors, actresses, singers and comedians have been ostracized after being embroiled in such criminal cases as drunken driving, drug use, plagiarism, fabricated of diplomas and draft dodging scandals. But many of them return to the limelight after only a brief hiatus.

However, this overly generous handling of these entertainers by the judiciary and the entertainment industry is the seed of recurrence of similar bad behavior by other entertainers.

Popular actor Choi Cheol-ho, who earned his name by starring in a series of mega-hit dramas, also disappointed his fans after his assault on an aspiring actress on the street was caught by a surveillance camera last month. His initial lie to cover up the case infuriated the public, forcing the 40-year-old to leave the public limelight.

Plagiarism is also rampant, but singers and composers are not held accountable in most cases. Pop diva Lee Hyo-ri admitted last month that several tracks from her fourth album were copied from other songs.

But many critics say she will come back as if nothing happened. “It may not be easy for Lee’s agency to suspend the superstar’s profitable performance for so long,” said a critic, who refused to be named. “Actor Choi also left the stage while at the height of his heyday. It won’t be long before his comeback is arranged.”

The critic took comedian Kim Joon-ho as an example. Last August, Kim was forced to step down from a popular Sunday comedy show, “Gag Concert,” for his illegal gambling. But he returned in May.

Critics say the generosity of major broadcasters is to blame for their brazen return. “Broadcasters are seeking more public attention and advertising revenue. To get them, they used to rely on such superstars even though they did something wrong. This is a deep-rooted, structural problem, which is unlikely to be addressed in the foreseeable future,” said Cho Min-joon, a pop culture critic.

Cho said that if broadcasters are unable to reprimand them properly, then law enforcement must step in. But this has not the case either, as proven by actor Kwon’s case.

Kwon’ case stands in stark contrast to similar incidents in the United States, where the showbiz industry wields greater clout. “At least, they play by the rules,” Cho said.

As widely publicized, Hollywood entertainer Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail this month for violating the terms of her probation, which she earned with a drunk driving incident. She is supposed to go straight to a rehabilitation center upon release from prison, her lawyer said, according to news reports.

Though there is controversy over whether she received preferential treatment in jail, critics here say putting superstars behind bars in itself is quite meaningful, sending a clear message to the media-conscious younger generation: There are no exceptions.

My friend ramming your car into two cars was no mistake. The point is celebrities think they are above reproach but in Korea the penalties may not necessarily come from the police the public's anger can devastate a career.
