The airport paparazzi photo which Gong-Yoo's golden body ratio is emphasized, has been displayed.

On the online community bulletin board on 19th, a photo of Gong-Yoo visiting New Zealand for the commercial shooting drew out heated topic.

As waiting for the leave after arrival at New Zealand airport, Gong-Yoo produced hot look of himself, with his slender body that reminds of the photo shoot, just by showing the natural act of looking at the passport. With the styling that properly matched comfortable items such as simple sunglasses, wind-blocker, cocky-colored cargo pants, showing off his great body ratio that even outgoes that of foreigner, gathering attention.

Meanwhile, Gong-Yoo is returning to screen in 2 years, with 'Suspect', the first action movie of the latter half of this year.

[by Joy Kim] On August 19, Gong yoo’s paparazzi photos were uploaded an online community.

He was at Oakland airport, New Zealand for his commercial shoot for outdoor wear brand Discovery Expedition. In the photos he was wearing gray wind shield from Discovery and khaki colored cargo pants.

He looked comfortable and natural in his casual outfit. With beanies and sunglasses he looked stylish among the crowds at the airport. He was no different from a model. 

After the photo was uploaded on online communities, fans left comment saying that "He looks like he can be on the runway right away", "He looks stylish even with just pair of sunglasses.".

Just as photoshoot was about to take place, the weather suddenly deteriorate. So staffs proceed with the photoshoot in nervous state. But for us, we had a drawing card, whom doesn't get tired even though same action was repeated, he is Gong Yoo.

가끔 촬영 중 시간이 나면 세트장 근처의 산을 찾아 트레일 러닝을 즐길 정 도로 최근 트레일 러닝의 매력에 푹 빠진 공유. “아무래도 실내 운동은 지루 할 수 있는데, 자연 속에서 운동하면 직접 흙이나 돌 등의 지면을 발바닥으 로 느끼면서 자연 풍광을 감상할 수 있어 좋아요. 바쁜 삶 속에서 여유를 찾 는 계기가 되고 제 자신이 굉장히 자유로워지는 느낌이 듭니다.”
Sometimes when he had time during filming, he would find a mountain near to the set (filming location) to enjoy trail running, and recently, he fell in love with the charm of trail running. "Perhaps indoor exercise can be boring, so I like to exercise in nature because I could feel the soil or stone directly with the sole of my feet naturally and also enjoy the scenery. It is a chance to relax myself from a busy life, and it makes me feel free."

그가 트레일 러닝을 하기 좋은 곳으로 꼽은 베스트 플레이스는 제주도다. “국내에도 해외만큼 트레일 러닝을 즐기기 좋은 곳들이 많이 늘어나고 있는 데 그중 제주도가 단연 최고죠. 해외 어디에 내놔도 뒤지지 않는 주변 자연 경관은 운동하면서 리프레시되기 충분해 트레일 러닝을 하다 보면 건강해지 는 기분이 들어요.“
He chose Jeju Island as the best place to do trail running. "There are growing numbers of great places in Korea to enjoy trail running like foreign country, Jeju Island is absolutely the best.  The natural landscape surrounding Jeju is comparable to those in foreign country, refreshing enough for exercising and I feel healthier while I do trail running."



그는 트레일 러닝 외에 캠핑도 자주 즐기는 아웃도어족이다. 절친 이천희가 워낙 캠핑 마니아라 자연스레 관심을 갖게 되었다고 한다. 굳이 몸을 써야 하는 운동 형태가 아니라 캠핑을 통해서도 자연과 함께 아웃도어 스포츠를 즐길 수 있다고 생각한다.
Besides trail running, he also enjoys camping. Because his best friend Lee Cheon Hee is a camping enthusiast, he has naturally developed interest in camping.  Even though it is not a form of body exercise, he thinks that people will enjoy outdoor sport in nature through camping.

“작품을 시작할 때는 오로지 작품에만 집중해야 하고, 그 반대의 경우에는 무한대로 시간이 나는 직업이다 보니, 스트레스를 그대로 짊어지거나 해소 하기 쉽지 않을 때가 많습니다.  아웃도어 스포츠 활동을 통해 심신을 다지는 동시에 마인드도 긍정적으로 변화되었고, 이 모든 것들이 결국 제 삶을 행복 하게 만들어준다고 생각합니다.”
"Because of my job (an actor), I only have to concentrate on my work when I start on a work/project, but on the other hand, I also have infinite time (reflecting his irregular life style), so I am under a lot of stress and it is often not easy for me to relieve stress.  My mind has changed positively as well while cultivating my body and mind through the outdoor sports activities. All these activities eventually make my life happy."

영화라는커다란그림의한부분이되는것. 스타가아닌배우로나이들어가는공유가 바라는건그런거다.
The movie could become part of a big picture. What Gong Yoo wants is being able to turn to an aging actor, not a star.



넌 공유 보면 어떠냐고 누군가에게 묻자 사귀면 기분이 좋아질 것 같은 남자라고 했다. 뭔지 안다. 그는 대도시에서 나고 자랐을 것 같고, 까칠하게 굴다가도 슬며시 다가와 씩 웃으며 툭 치는 걸로 상대방 마음을 녹일것 같다. 땀 흘리며 운동하는 걸 좋아할 것 같은데 그건 축구나 권투보다 야구나 농구일 것 같다. 덩치 큰 레트리버와 뒤엉켜 장난치는 모습이 떠오르고, 햇볕에 바싹 말린 빨래에서 나는 상쾌한 냄새와 신선한 촉감이 연상되는 게 공유다. 드라마 "커피프린스 1호점" ‘최한결’의 이미지가 공유의 실제 이미지로 전화된 것이다. 나쁜 편견보다 깨기 어려운 건 좋은 편견이다. 그러나 공유는 영화 "도가니" 에서 그간 볼 수 없었던 모습을 선보이면서 자기 한계가 될 수 있는 이미지 밖으로 나왔다. 청각장애인학교 기간제 교사 ‘강인호’는 고단하고 척박한 현실에 무기력증을 느끼는 소시민이지만, 묵인된 폭력을 목격하고 약자 쪽에 서는 편을 선택한다. 자신의 선택이 빚어낼 결과에 대해 번뇌하고 갈등하는 강인호에 대한 공유의 절제된 연기는 도식적으로 흐를 수 있는 영화에 현실성을 부여했고, 자신의 폭을 넓히는 계기가 됐다.
When someone asks you what your thoughts are on Gong Yoo, you would say that he is a man who is likely to make you feel very happy. I am sure you really realize then. He should have been raised in a big city. He looks a little fussy, but he will still come to you, tap on your shoulder and warm up your heart. He may like sports, sweating off like crazy, but I guess his favorite ones are baseball and basketball, rather than soccer or boxing. I could imagine him wrestling with a huge golden retriever. When I think of Gong Yoo, he is a person whom has the scent and softness of fresh laundries beneath the shining sun. I believe the actual image of Gong Yoo was being transformed from the image of ‘Choi Han Gyul’ from the drama “Coffee Prince”. To defeat good bias is even more difficult than to subdue the bad ones. However, Gong Yoo came out of his comfort zone that restrained his horizon by showing his image which he had not shown in the past at the movie “Dogani”. ‘Kang In Ho’, a temp teacher at a hearing impaired school, is an ordinary person whom witnesses implicitly approved violence in the school, decides to stand on the side of the under-privileged. Gong Yoo’s own choice to act as that agonized and restrained Kang In Ho in this movie which infused reality was highly predictable.  That role extended his acting horizon at the end.

부산국제영화제 공식 매거진 "마리끌레르 BIFF Special"은 올해 표지의 인물로 영화 "용의자"의 개봉을 앞둔 공유를 선택했다. "구타유발자들"과 "세븐데이즈"를 연출한 원신연 감독이 만든 "용의자"는 북한에서 버림받고 남한에서 대리운전을 하며 살아가던 전직 북한 특수부대 출신 용병 ‘지동철’이 대기업 회장 살인 사건의 범인으로 누명을 쓴 채 쫓기며 벌어지는 이야기를 그린 영화다. 강도 높은 액션이 포함된다는 사실 외에 지금까지 공개된 건 몇 장의 스틸 사진이 전부다. 사진 속 공유는 지동철이란 인물이 무채색 배경만큼이나 스산한 내적 풍경을 가지고 있을 것이라고 짐작하게 만든다. 지금까지 공유가 연기한 인물들과 또 다른 국면을 사는 남자일 거라고 추측하게 되는 것이다.
Busan International Film Festival’s official magazine "Marie Claire BIFF Special" selected Gong Yoo as the cover person of the year before the grand opening of the movie ‘The Suspect’. ‘The Suspect‘ is a movie directed by Won Shin Yun who had also directed ‘A Bloody aria’ and ‘Seven days’ before. The synopsis depicts ‘Ji Dong Chul’, a former North Korean Special Forces agent who was abandoned by his country, earns a living as a chauffeur in South Korea.  He is soon indicted as a suspect in a murder case against the chairman of a gigantic corporation. He is on the run.  Other than the leak from a few photos that illustrates the highly intensive action scenes, there is not much details being disclosed yet.  The Gong Yoo shown in those photos, namely, Ji Dong Chul, called forth our imagination to characterize him as bleak as the background scenes. This impression could also constitute to our speculation that he could be quite different from all other characters which Gong Yoo acted in the past.

촬영 장소인 남산 자락의 한 건축사무소로 들어서는 공유를 보면서 작품 밖에서 그를 볼 기회가 별로 없다는 사실을 새삼스레 깨달았다. 공유는 그 흔한 공항 패션 사진도, 브랜드 행사장 포토월 사진도 떠돌지 않는 배우다. 그는 어느 순간 과작하는 배우에 속하는 축이 됐고, 작품을 하는 기간을 제외하면 어디에서 뭘 하고 사는지 알 수 없는 배우가 됐다.
When I was looking at Gong Yoo who was entering the shooting studio, an architect’s office at the foothill of Mt. Namsan, I got to realize that I had seldom seen him beyond his cameos in movies or dramas. He is an actor who has very rarely circulated photos that could be taken at the airport or advertisement events.  At a certain point, he is an actor who does not appear in that many movies or dramas, and he is very hard to track down when he is not working in movie-making sessions too.

앞이 보이지 않을 정도로 비가 쏟아지던 어느 가을, 오후 내내 우리는 그래서 더 아늑해진 실내에서 쿵짝거리며 화보를 찍었고 이어진 인터뷰가 끝났을 때쯤 나는 조금쯤 공유를 짐작할 수 있었다.
On a Fall afternoon while the rain was so heavy that I could barely see anything within an inch, we took some photos for this pictorial in the cozy settings indoor. By the time the interview was over, I got to know him just a little bit better then.



(Q) 화보를 찍다 보면 잘 찍히는 사람이 있고, 같이 만드는 사람이 있다. 나는 공유가 같이 만드는 타입이라고 느껴졌다. 좀 더 자주 해도 되지 않나?
(Q) While doing photo shooting, some people are easy to work with and some are not. I thought Gong Yoo tends to be a team player. Shouldn’t we work out more?

(A) 분명한 건, 같이 만들어가는 작업은 화보든, 영화든 뭐든 환영하고 재미있어하는데 내가 게으른 것도 있고, 나이 들수록 명분이란 걸 생각하게 되는 것 같다. 여기저기 나오는 게 싫다기보다 나랑 안 맞는다는 생각이 든다, 일할수록. 많이 나오는 게 중요한 게 아니라 할 때 그 과정이 중요한거지. 매번 내가 원하는 대로 나오는 게 아니지 않나. 내가 재미있게 즐길 수 있는 순간에 하는 게 좋다. 아무래도 남들보다는 작품도 그렇고 덜 하지 않나 싶다.
(A) Obviously, whether it is the operation of pictorial or movie shooting, it must be an interesting project regardless of team work or not.  As I am getting older, I tend to think if it is justified. I don’t really mind showing up here and there. However, as I frequented more, I just don’t think I fit into those scenes. It is not how many times I appear that matters.  It is the right timing that rules. I can’t be successful in every movie that I work in. I want to do a role that I really enjoy. May be that is why I do fewer movies than the others.


(Q) 즐긴다, 재미있다는 건 여러 가지 의미일 것이다. 영화에 들어갔을 때 나를 던져서 즐겁게 하는 사람도 있지만, 넓은 의미로는 즐기되 실제 과정은 고통스 럽게 작업하는 사람도 있다. 힘들고 어렵게. 어떤 편인가?
(Q) There could be many different meanings with ‘enjoying’ and ‘having fun’. When I start working in a movie, there are some people who could make the process to be more interesting for me to deal with. There are also others that do the same with an extended meaning that could make the actual process painful, harder, and more difficult to cope with though.  Which side are you on?

(A) 일단 주사위가 던져지면 힘들어하지는 않는다. 결정하는 데까지 시간이 많이 걸리는 거지. 그 안에 들어가고 더 이상 후회나 자잘한 고민들이 의미가 없어지면, 즐기고 최선을 다하는 편이다. 들어가기까지 시간이 많이 걸리는 건 사실인 것 같다.
(A) Once the die is cast, I won’t mind working hard at all. It just takes a long time. Once I am in and the repentance and small worries disappear, I tend to enjoy and will do my best. It takes a long time for me to get there though, frankly.


(Q) 뭘 고민하는 거지?
(Q)  What did you worry?

(A) 사실 올해 "용의자"를 하면서 회사에 작품을 많이 하고 싶다는 얘기를 했는데 뜻대로 되지 않고 있다. 마음에 드는 작품을 아직 못 찾았다. 그건 시나리오의 질이 아니라 내 마음의 문제다. 남들 눈에는 단순히 까탈스럽게 구는 걸로 보일 수도 있고. 제작자들한테 너무 재는 거 아니냐, 도대체 얼마나 좋은 작품을 하려고 이러는 거냐, 볼멘소리도 듣곤 하는데, 말로 설명하기는 어렵다. 자연스럽게 움직여지는 것, 많이 계산하지 않아도 되는 것. 선택할 때 보면, 선택이 어려운 건 오래 고민하고 생각을 많이 하기 때문이 아니더라. 어떤 걸 선택할 때 보면 그 이전에 생각하고 계산했던 것과는 전혀 상관없이 그냥 흔쾌히 결정하는 순간이 있더라. 그런 거 보면 재고 따지고 결정하는 게 아니라 물 흐르듯이 흘러갈 때가 있는데 그 순간을 따라가는 것 같다.
(A) In fact, while working at ‘The Suspect’, I told my company that I would like to do more movies.  But it did not turn out as I wanted. I have not found any movie that I liked. It is not the quality of scenarios that matters, but the state of my mind. To other people, I may seem to be too picky, or be playing hard to the producers. I have heard those lines but it is difficult for me to explain in words. I opt to work in line and paced naturally. There is no need for superfluous calculation though.  I find out that what makes the selection process hard is not because I am concerned with the result.  It is because I take long time to make a choice.  Nevertheless, there are times which I have made quick decisions that do not involve any previous calculations and thoughts.  That seems to be the right way to have the job done; just like the water flows smoothly in the river.


(Q) "용의자"는 어땠나?
(Q) How was ‘The Suspect’?

(A) 조금 다른 경우인데 시나리오 재미있게 봤고 좋은데 두려움이 있었다. 개인적으로 액션영화에 대한 판타지, 멋있게 누군가를 제압하고 관객이 멋있게 느끼게 하는 데 관심이 있는 사람이 아니었다. 저예산 영화라도 밀도 있는 스토리의 영화를 좋아하지, 블록버스터나 화려한 것과 맞는 성향은 아니다. 내 감성과 어울리지 않는 영화여서 처음엔 거절했었다. 감독님이 상당히 적극적으로 프러포즈하셨는데도 거절했다. 그 영화는 이미 나를 떠난 작품이었는데 감독님이 다시 프러포즈를 하셨다. 왜 이렇게 이 사람이 나를 원할까 생각해봤다. 솔직하게 얘기하면 반 예의? 이렇게까지 나한테 프러포즈하는 사람이 많지 않은데 얼마나 확신이 있길래 나한테 이럴까 생각하다가 감독님을 한번 만나자고 해서 만났다. 만난 뒤에 생각이 바뀌었다. 감독님의 얘기에서 시나리오에서도 느낄 수 없는 진정성이 느껴졌다. 공유라는 배우와 이 영화를 꼭 하고 싶은 이유에 대해 하나하나 차근차근 말씀하시는데 단순히 말을 잘해서가 아니라 단순히 보여주기식의 화려한 영화를 만들고 싶은 게 아니구나 하는 진심이 느껴졌고, 이런 사람이라면 내가 선호하는 장르도 아니고, 내가 한 번도 관심을 둔 장르도 아니지만 이 사람을 믿고 가면 재미있는 작업이 될 수 있을 거라는 생각이 들었다.
(A)  It was a different case. I found the scenario very good and I liked it a lot even though I had some reservation. Personally, I was not an actor who had a fantasy about action movies, nor had I been a strong hero who showed his power and got the audience engaged. I like movies with good storyline even if it is a low budget production. I am not particularly fond of blockbusters and fancy movies.  As this movie was beyond my style, I rejected it at the very first beginning.  The director really wanted to work with me but I still turned it down.  However, while I thought it was a done deal, the director asked me again. I wondered why the director wanted to have me being casted so much. To be honest, I guessed it could be more of courtesy for me though. There had not been that many directors who needed me that badly. While I was wondering why the director was so confident with me, he asked me to meet with him. After that, my thoughts were changed. I could feel his sincerity from what he said. While he was explaining why he wanted to work with me, Gong Yoo, I got to realize that what he wanted was not just a gorgeous movie which could draw audience. That was not because he was an articulate speaker. Therefore, I became confident that this movie could be a great one by believing and working with him even though I had never been interested in this genre before.



(Q) 원신연 감독이 그렇게 공유를 원한 이유가 뭐라고 하던가?
(Q)  Why the director, Won Shin Yun, wanted Gong Yoo so much?

(A) 처음부터 나랑 하고 싶었다고 하시더라. 거짓말이라도 기분 좋은 말이지 않나. 내가 예전에 찍은 화보 한 컷에서 영감을 받아 그 사진을 컴퓨터 바탕 화면에 내내 깔아놨다고 하시더라.
(A)  He said he wanted to work with me right from the beginning. That might not be completely true, but wasn’t it nice to hear so? He told me he was inspired from one of my photos in a pictorial. He used that as the wallpaper for his computer screen.


(Q)  그것 봐라. 화보는 찍어야 한다.
(Q)  See, you really need to do more shootings.

(A)   (웃음) 그 사진을 보면서 늘 이번 영화의 주인공 동철이를 생각하셨다고 한다. 공유가 이러저러해서라고 얘기하지 않았는데도 이해가 갔다.
(A)  (Laughs) He said whenever he saw that photo, he thought about Dong Chul, the lead of this movie. I could understand why he wanted to work with me without hearing all other reasons then.


(Q)  단순한 액션영화가 아니라고 해도, 액션이 들어가는 영화 자체가 처음이다. 여러 의미에서 지금까지 해온 영화들과 다른 지점이 있었을 것 같다.
(Q) This is not a movie with simple actions, and this is the first time you participated in an action movie like this one too. There might be lots of differences compared with all your previous movies though.

(A) 액션에 대한 두려움이 있었다. 성격상 어설프게 보여주기는 또 싫고. 늘 자기가 잘하는 것만 보여주려다 보면 스스로 한계에 갇히니까 뭔가 끊임없이 시도해야 하는 건 사실인데, 내가 1백억짜리 영화에서 원 톱 맡아서 끌고 갈 수 있을까 하는 두려움도 있었다. 예산이 큰 영화를 하다 보면 리스크를 배우가 짊어져야 하는 부분이 있지 않나. 그것에 대한 두려움이 있었던 건 사실이고, 그 두려움도 이 작품을 거절했던 이유기도 하다. 예전에는 좀 덜했는데 공유라는 이름이 커질수록 그런 걸 생각하게 된다. 한두푼 드는 영화가 아니고, 투자자 입장도 생각해야 하고. 원래 난 안 그랬다. 난 배우인데 뭐, 연기만 잘하면 되지. 그런데 안 그런 것 같으면서도 점점 신경 쓰게 된다. 내가 망가질까봐 두려운 건 없다. 어찌 됐건 타이틀 롤을 맡았을 때 내가 부귀영화를 누리자고 영화가 잘되길 바라진 않는다. 하지만 영화는 혼자 만드는 게 아니기 때문에 감독이나 스태프도 나라는 배우랑 같이 작업을 했는데 잘되면 그들의 필모그래피에도 도움이 될 것이고, 나를 믿고 투자한 제작자나 투자자에게도 공유라는 배우는 믿고 투자할 만한 배우라는 인식을 주고 싶고. 그건 꼭 다음 행보에 대한 게 아니라. 그냥, 모르겠다. 책임감이 생긴다.
(A) I was scared about doing action scenes. I am not the type who does a mediocre job, either. It is true that if you only do what you are good at, you will get trapped in your own limitations. Hence, it is totally justified for me to try something different whenever I can.  Yet, I turned timid for being the solely lead in a 10 billion won budgeted movie.  It is understandable for an actor to worry about that risk in a movie with that much investment, right? There was certainly a concern about it and that fear made me turn down the role proposal. It was not exactly from my stand but I got to think in due course as the name Gong Yoo became increasingly noted.  Since there was a lot of money on the line, I got to consider about the investors too. I was not like that in the past.  All I cared was whether I could deliver good acting as an actor. I reluctantly tended to be more and more sensitive on it though. I would not reckon any monetary yield when I pick up a leading role in a movie. And I am not the only one that could have a movie being made.  Whether a movie will turn out to be great also depends on the director and the staff who could have their filmographies being enriched by its success too.  Furthermore, I want to make sure that I am the actor whom the producers and investors can trust, actor Gong Yoo.  That is not because of the next step, either. I have no idea about it. I feel the responsibility.


(Q) 영화 들어가서는 어땠나?
(Q) How was the shooting then?

(A)  너무 재미있었다. 지금까지 내가 찍은 영화 중에 가장 혹독한 촬영이 많았고, 육체적으로도 가장 힘들었던 영화다. 촬영 회차가 1백 회 차가 넘고 9개월이 넘게 이어지는 촬영이었다. 지금까지 찍은 영화 중 가장 장시간 촬영한 영화고, 육체적으로 고생도 많이 한 영화다. 작품의 흥행 여부를 떠나서 감독님이 내가 이 영화를 찍도록 적극적으로 프러포즈해준 데 대해 몇 번을 감사드렸다. 모처럼 과정이 즐거운 작품이었다. 매번 과정이 즐겁지는 않지 않나.
(A)  It was really fun.  Among all the movies I acted in, this movie had the most brutally hard and physically demanding scenes. There were more than 100 shooting sessions and it took more than 9 months. This was the movie with the longest production time I had worked in and it was tiresome for me physically too. Regardless of its commercial success or not, I would say “thank you” to the director who had asked me so sincere again and again. The process of the movie shooting was a real joy. It could hardly be enjoyable in every single aspect during shooting, but this was the one.


(Q) 어떤 이유 때문일까?
(Q) What are the reasons?

(A) 감독과의 호흡, 스태프들과의 호흡, 여러 가지 운, 시기 때문인 것 같다. 연애를 하고 사랑을 할 때 타이밍이라는 걸 얘기하듯이 작품과 나의 궁합에도 시기나 흐름이 있는 것 같다. "용의자"가 나랑 그렇게 맞아떨어졌다. 그러다 보니까 파이팅이 생기고, 손가락 인대를 다치고, 몸이 아파서 누워도 현장에 가고 싶어졌다. 이전에 드라마 할때처럼 많이 지치고, 과정이 녹록지 않아 몸이 힘든데도 참아가며 일한다는 느낌보다는 배우로서 현장에서 놀고 있구나 하는 느낌이 들었다. 글쎄, 왜 좋았을까을 말로 설명하기는 쉽지 않다.
(A) I think it was the teamwork with the director and the staff, various lucks and the good timing. Just like when you talk about love and romance, you talk about the timing. There always exists a relationship between the timing of the movie and me. “The Suspect” landed a perfect spot. That’s why I got really motivated.  Even when my finger ligament was hurt and I was sick in bed, I still wanted to go out to the shooting sessions. When I filmed dramas in the past, I would probably have thought how to endure all the physical tiredness and tough sessions. Whereas this time, I think I was indeed having fun at the shooting studio as an actor.  Well, it is not easy to describe why it was so fun in words.


(Q) 화보 찍을 때도, 영화를 찍을 때도 같이 만드는 게 중요한 사람인가보다.
(Q) Just like shooting for pictorials, shooting a movie with a good team is important too.

(A)  난 감독도 아니고 포토그래퍼도 아니고 배우지만, 그런 거 좋아한다. 시너지. 내가 완벽하지 않기 때문에 내 장점과 그 사람의 장점이 만났을 때 우리가 미처 생각하지 못한 시너지가 생기는 걸좋아한다. 그래서 내가 몰랐던, 보지 못했던 모습을 누군가와 함께하는 데서 나오는 시너지를 통해 발견할 때의 성취감이 있다. 그렇게 따지면 아무래도 처음에 만나서 작업할 때, 그 사람을 선택하는 데 시간이 걸린다. 이 사람이 과연 나와 합이 맞는 사람인가. 그건 여전히 확신할 순 없는 거다. 그냥 가는 거지. 작품 선택할 때도 그런 게 상당히 작용한다. 감독 미팅을 하는 이유도 시나리오 잘 봤다고 무조건 갈 수가 없고 이 영화를 만들고 싶은 사람, 시나리오를 쓴 사람의 성향과 마음이 궁금하기 때문이다. 물론 처음 만났을 때는 서로 거짓말도 하고 솔직하지 않다. 그런 중에도 내가 캐치하는 시간인거다. 이 사람과 함께 하는 작업이 재미있을까? 그런 걸 보는데, 내가 틀릴때도 있고. 나랑 전혀 안 맞을 것 같았는데 막상 들어가보니까 희한하게 잘 맞을 때도 있고. 어쨌든 나는 너무 정확하게 계산되어 있어서 공식의 답같은 건 별로 좋아하지 않는다. 누군가와 시너지를 냈을 때 느끼는 성취감이 중요한 것 같다. 우연의 미학 같은 거다.
(A) I am not a director or a photographer, but an actor.  And, I like synergy.  As I am not perfect, when my strengths and weaknesses get together, the synergy that did not exist before could come by. Thus, I could feel great fulfillment when I find the synergy generated from working with other people. That is why sometimes I take long time to select the right people whom I will work with for the first time. I try to figure out if that person is a right fit for me. Certainly, nothing is guaranteed. I just take chances. The same could be extended in choosing a movie though. You cannot just go to meet with the director solely because you liked the story.  I could also be interested with the thoughts and state of mind of the people who are going to make the movie, or write the scripts. Of course, people may lie and not being honest with me when we meet for the first time. It could only be told by time. Will it be fun working with this person? I check things like that.  Sometimes I could be wrong. Sometimes it turns out to be an unbelievably well-matched case once we work together despite I could have doubts before.  Anyhow, I am not particularly keen on anything that seeks for a precise answer based on certain formula calculation. I value the sense of achievement from the synergy formed by working with people. That is the aesthetics of chances.



(Q)  "용의자"의 액션 신이 궁금하다.
(Q) I am curious about the action scenes of ‘The Suspect’.

(A) "본" 시리즈 이후에 나온 액션의 패턴은 같다. 극 중에서 화려함을 보여주는 건 이미 올드한 액션이고, 한두 번의 타격으로 상대방에게 치명적인 손상을 입힐 수 있는 액션이 각광받는다. 우리 영화에는 러시아의 요원들이 쓰는 시스테마라는 액션이 나오는데, 처음에 영화 찍을 때 감독님한테 그렇게 얘기했다. 감독님, 저 몸이 유연하지 못해서 액션영화에 자신이 없어요. 어떻게 하시려고 그러세요, 농담 삼아 얘기했는데 요즘 실질적으로 사람을 제압할때, 이를테면 요원들이 발차기? 없을 거다. 있을 수가 없다. 그 시간에 돌려차기하다가 상대방한테 맞고 끝나는 거다. 최대한 와이어를 쓰지 않고, 합을 짤 때는 실질적으로 거의 손으로 했다. 한두 합, 서너 합. 무술인들 얘기 들어 보면 고수들이 실제로 할 때는 서너 합에 다 끝난다더라. 나는 오히려 이 합이 편했다. 동철이? 절대적인 고수이고 훈련받다 죽을 수 있는, 100 대 1의 경쟁을 뚫고 선발된 사람이기 때문에 병기에 가깝지 사람이 아니다. 그렇기 때문에 공유가 발차기에 대해 걱정할 일이 없다, 걱정하지 마라. 오히려 감독님이 생각하는 액션이 내가 하는데 부담스럽진 않았다. 오히려 나랑 맞았다. 다행스러웠던 게 상체가 왜소한 편은 아니니까 타이트한 숏 잡을 때 손으로 하는 것들이 파워풀하게 보인다고 감독님이 좋아하더라.
(A) The action pattern after the “Bourne” series sounds similar.  Presenting the flamboyance action scenes has already been deemed as old school.  A few marshal actions with lethal power that could defeat enemies are being highly appreciated.  In our movie, there is an action called ‘systema’ which had been used by the Russian secret agents.  At the beginning of the movie shooting, I told the director that I was not that confident with my action scenes because I was not flexible enough. I jokingly asked him what he could do with that.  Then, he said that practically no one could just use kicking to knock out the enemies.  A special agent just used kicking in fighting? He disagreed and said that’s just impossible.  If the agent did that, he would get strike and that could be the end of it. While shooting, I tried not to use the holding wires as much as possible.  I was practically only using my bare hands to do couples of hand attacks repeatedly. According to a black belt senior, good fighters could conquer with just a few attacks.  I actually liked that idea. Dong Chul? He is a master who got selected among hundreds of candidates.  He was more like a weapon than a person though. That was why I did not have to worry about the kicking attacks.  Don’t worry, the action scenes that the director tried to present did not bother me. In fact, those scenes really suited me well. One fortunate fact is, as I am not a small frame person, the director found my hand motions looked pretty powerful and he likes it.


(Q) "도가니" 이후로 공유 방식의 캐릭터 해석이 궁금해졌다. 이번엔 어땠나?
(Q) I wonder how Gong Yoo’s define characters after ‘Dogani’. What do you think?

(A) 대사가 별로 없다. 사실 대사가 없으면 더 어렵다. 배우마다 다르겠지만. 말을 하지 않고 내 몸으로, 눈으로 얘기해야 하는 상황이 많이 주어졌기 때문에, 사실은 아직 영화를 못 봐서 말을 어떻게 해야 할지 모르겠는데, 나는 아쉬운 게 많다 일단. 그런데 글쎄, 현장에서 사람들이 나를 동철이로 만들더라. 내가 말하는 좋은 과정이라는 것의 하나인 것 같다. 실질적으로 사람들이 나를 어떻게 보는지 모르지만, 나는 그렇게 계산이 많은 사람은 아니다. 알고 보면 본능에 충실하고, 생각이 많은 건 사실이지만 결정적인 순간에는 본능을 믿고, 촉을 믿는 사람이라 현장에 가기 전에 공부하는 스타일도 아니고, 볼펜으로 칠하면서 연기에 대해 설정하지도 않는다. 내가 이 지문과 이 시퀀스를 연기할 때 이런 걸 설정해야지 한 적이 한 번도 없다. 그냥 그때 갔을 때 그날 그 현장의 느낌대로 간다.
(A) There were not that many lines. Actually, the fewer the lines, the harder the work could be for the actor. There were lots of scenes that I ought to perform with my body and eyes, it was very challenging. Even though I have not seen the finished version of the movie yet, the people at the shooting studio made me feel like I was Dong Chul. I take it as part of good practice in the movie making process. I am not quite sure how the audiences look and I am not really a calculated person. I am the type of person who strives to be oneself with thoughtful scrutiny all the time. But I would believe in my instinct at a crucial moment.  Neither do I set up an acting plan nor do I study to so before I start.  I have never institute on how I should act this or that way based on a certain line or a particular sequence. I just do it naturally with accordance to what I feel at the studio.


(Q)  그건 의외다.
(Q)  That is really surprising.

(A) 연기할 땐 그렇다. 연기할 때는 별로 생각이 없다. 개인적인 일을 할 때는 생각이 많고 선택하고 결정하고, 매니지먼트랑 같이 합의하에 일해야 할 때는 생각이 많지만, 카메라 앞에 섰을 때 생각이 많지 않다. 그래서 카메라 앞에 서는 게 나한테는 자유로운 시간이기도 한 거고. 내가 생각하는 동철이는 이럴 거야, 저럴 거야, 이러다가 그 안에 갇히는 경우가 생긴다고 생각한 거다. <용의자>라는 영화는 현장에 갔을 때 아름다운 배경이 하나도 없었다. 삭막하고, 다 무채색이고, 주변이 시멘트고 폐가고. 그냥 그 안에 자연스럽게 내가 묻힌다. 그래서 솔직히 로맨틱 코미디보다 편했다. 그리고 동철은 혼자다. 물론 다른 인물들과 부딪치지만, 다른 인물들과 섞이는 인물이 아니다. 철저히 혼자고, 철저히 사람이 아닌 사람. 그래서 어떻게 보면 그 장소, 그 분위기에 갔을 때, 실제로 감독이 나한테 대사를 안 줬으니까. 내 입은 닫혀 있고. 그냥 그 느낌에 쳐다보는 내 눈이 카메라에 찍혔을 것 같다. 현장에 던져놓고 나한테 총을 쏘고 나더러 뛰래.(웃음) 그럼 되게 절박하게 뛴다. 다칠까봐 뛰는 게 아니라 그 순간 진짜 실사가 돼버려서 그냥 자연스럽게 동철의 눈을 뜨게 되고, 동철의 표정을 갖게 되고 그랬던 것 같다.
(A) That is the way I am when I act. I don’t think a lot while I am acting. I do think, select, manage and discuss a lot with my management company when I work on my personal business, but not while I am in front of the camera. Therefore I am totally free when I am in front of the camera. I presumed Dong Chul would do this and that, and eventually I got trapped in him. When I went to the shooting studio of ‘The Suspect’, the background was usually very dreary, bleak.  Everything was surrounded in a black and white monotone setting with concrete and deserted houses only.  I could submerse in the scenery naturally. To be honest, I actually felt far more comfortable acting in it than in a romantic comedy. And, Dong Chul is lonely. He could come across many people, but he could not mingle them easily. He is an absolute loner who is not really a human in any possible way. That could be the reason why the director did not give me any line at that place under that atmosphere. My lips were just sealed. Probably the camera caught my eyes staring blank point though. The director threw me at the studio and told me to shoot a gun and run away. (Laughs) Then, I got to run really desperately. I was running, try not to get hurt. Hence, as I was as totally assimilated as Dong Chul, I think I opened his eyes and got his facial expressions too.


(Q) 유쾌하고, 나이스하면서도 찌르는 맛도 있고, 여자들이 선망하는 매력적인 남자가 공유였는데 "도가니" 이후로 눅눅하고, 곤란한 남자에 가까울 수도 있 겠다는 생각이 든다. 배우로서는 더 다양한, 넓은 깊이를 갖게 됐으니까 좋은 건가?
(Q) Gong Yoo used to be a guy who was very funny, nice, but a little bit cynical; and many women found him to be very attractive. However, after the movie ‘Dogani’, you seemed to be a gloomy and scary person. Is it better for you as you widened and deepened you acting dimensions?

(A) 어느 쪽이 가까운지는 나도 잘 모르겠다. 아직 크고 있는 중이라.(웃음) 어느 쪽에 가까운지 한참 알고 싶었던 시기가 있었던 것 같다. 그걸 빨리 알아서 사람들에게 그걸 피력을 해야겠다. 나 이런 사람이다. 그런데 그게 중요하지 않은 것 같다. 분명히 사람들이 몰랐을 뿐이지 내가 가지고 있는 것 중 하나인 것 같다. 나이를 먹고 세월이 흐를수록 언제까지 연기를 하게 될지 모르지만, 어느 순간에 사람들이 재발견이라는 말을 쓰겠지, 내가 좋아하는 말은 아니지만.
(A) I don’t know which side I am closer to. I am still growing up. (Laughs) There was a time I was trying very hard to figure out which side I was closer to. I would like to find out quickly and let people know I am this kind of person soon. However, that does not seem to be important at all. It could be one of my features that others are unaware of. I don’t know how long I will still stay in acting as I get older.  I am sure people will use the term ‘rediscovery’ to characterize that, even though I don’t like it.



(Q) 여태까지 공유가 해온 역할 중에 공유랑 가장 밀착된 역할은 누군가? 워낙 편차가 크니까. 물론 다 있겠지만. 그래도 내가 생각하는 나는 있을테니까.
(Q) Which character among the roles you played in is the closest to the actual Gong Yoo? It is hard as we know that there are huge differences. Surely, there must be one. I think there must be one.

(A) 술 먹고 친구들이랑 얘기할 때는 내 얘기 잘 하는데 인터뷰할 때는 어렵다. 진짜 가까운 사람들의 얘기를 빌리자면 한결이가 나랑 되게 비슷하다고 한다. 지인한테서 이런 전화를 받은 적이 있다. “야, 연기를 하란 말이야. 왜 연기를 안 하고 그냥 너를 보여줘?” 전체적으로 그런 건 아니지만 톤이 그렇다고 하더라. 까칠하지만 그렇다고 마음이 모질거나 냉정하고 강한 사람은 아니고 여린 면이 있는. 이 인터뷰를 위해 솔직하게 얘기하자면, 이건 진짜 내 생각이다. 최한결과 강인호가 섞인 것 같다. 그런 얘기를 친구에게 한 적이 있다. 물론 어떤 인물에도 내가 다 조금씩은 있다. 그 캐릭터와 나를 균형감 있게 보여주는 게 배우의 몫이니까 그렇게 했지만, 굳이 얘기하자면 그 두 개가 합해졌을 때 가장 근사치가 아닌가 싶다.
(A) I am a good talker when I drink with my friends, but it becomes harder when I am in an interview. According to the close people around me, Han Gyul is very similar to me. Once I got a call from one of my acquaintance. “Hey, you need to act in that. Why not show yourself without acting at all?’ That may not represent the whole picture, but I presume there must be a certain tone in it. I may be a little bit picky but I am not an ill-tempered or cold-blooded person. I still have soft spots. I am honest with you in this interviews, I think that could be factual remarks. I did not discuss with my friends before. It could be a mixture of Choi Han Gyul and Kang In Ho.  Without doubt, there is a little bit of me in every character. The role of an actor is to present the balance between the character and his genuine self. I would say, if the two collaborate well, I believe that it is most likely the closest of me then.


(Q) 공유는 행사장에도 안 오고, 레드 카펫에서 볼 수 있을 때도 거의 없다. 10년 전 공유를 인터뷰했을 때는 훨씬 스타 지향적일 거라고 생각했다. 셀럽이나 트 렌드세터의 느낌. 그런 것들과 동떨어져 살고 있다. 뭐 하나 혼자서? 마치 숨어 있는 사람처럼 보일 정도다.
(Q) Gong Yoo does not show up at any event and he very rarely appears at any red carpet ceremony. When I interviewed Gong Yoo 10 years ago, I thought he was a very inspiring star-to-be. I mean the feeling of him as a trend-setter. You are living far from it. What are you doing by yourself? You almost look like a hermit.


(A)  어렸을 때 해봤다, 이것저것. 재미가 없었다. 많이 다닌 건 아니니까 한두 번 가보고 하는 판단이니 잘못된 것일 수 있지만, 굳이 내가 있어야 하는 자리도 아니잖아, 그런 생각했던 것 같다. 재미가 없었다. 사람들 앞에 나서는 직업이고, 어떻게 보면 사람들한테 뽐내는 직업이지 않나. 사람들 앞에서 반짝거리고, 멋있고. 여전히 어색하다. 사람들 앞에서 멋진 척하는 거. 그 자리가 불편해지고, 포토월에 서서 포즈 취하는 것도 겉으로는 멋있는 척하지만 속으로는 아, 어떡해 어떡해, 불편해, 불편해. 넥타이를 풀어서 던져버리고 싶었고 내가 굳이 안 가도 되면 안 가고 싶었고, 그래서 그 이후로 안 갔다.
(A) I have done this and that when I was young. It was not fun at all. That was not just once or twice experiences which drew to this judgment. Being there bothered me. My job was to stand in front of people, somewhat, a job showing off myself, right? Someone who acts glittering and chic in front of the audience, but that is not my genuine self. It was so awkward. Even if I posed in front of the photo-walls and pretended to look cool, I really found it very uncomfortable and wanted to throw away my neckties. If I did not have to, I did not want to go.  And I have distant from that then.


(Q) 공유는 어떻게 나이 먹게 될까? 아까 사진 보면서 할아버지가 되면 영국 가면 볼 수 있는 그런 노인이 되겠다는 생각도 들던데.
(Q) How will Gong Yoo be aging? When I looked at the photos some time ago, I thought you would look like a grandfather whom could only be found in Britain.

(A) 멋있다, 그런 할아버지. 내가 40대, 50대가 됐을 때 어떤 모습일지 생각한 적이 있다. 이런 모습이면 좋겠다고 생각해봤던 게 제레미 아이언스 같은 사람. 그 런 느낌이 좋다. 그런 사람 별로 못 봤다. 꿈이다.
(A) That’s so cool, the image as a grandfather is great. I have imagined what I will look like when I am in my 40’s and 50’s. The ideal image that came up resembles ‘Jeremy Irons’. I like that feeling. I have not seen that many people like him. That is my dream.


(Q) 배우로서, 남자로서 공유도 보편적인 스타일은 아니다. 이질적이다. 스타로서 뽐낼 수 있고, 그게 즐거워야 하는데 그것도 좀 모자란 것 같고.
(Q) As an actor and as a man, Gong Yoo is not a typical stereotype. It is not common.  As a star, you can brag and you can also have fun; but you don’t seem to be that type of person.

(A) 그게 아이러니다. 지금까지 일을 해왔다는 게 나도 신기하다. 연예계라는 녹록지 않은 곳이 나랑 그다지 맞는 것 같지도 않다. 그래도 10년 넘게 이렇게 있는 게 장하기도 하다. 나이 들수록 그런 부분에는 타협하기 더 어려울 것 같다. 오히려 더 이질적인 색이 짙어질 것 같고, 그랬으면 좋겠다. 그랬을 때 내가 그리던 그림에 가까워질 것 같다. 그렇게 되고 싶다고 그렇게 되는 건 아니겠지만. 그리고 나는 국민배우가 되고 싶지는 않다.
(A) That is the irony. It is even more amazing that I have been working this long. The barbarous showbiz does not seem to fit me, either. I am proud of myself for staying in this business for more than 10 years. It seems to me that compromising will be even harder as I get older. I would rather be polished heterogeneously and I really hope I will be just like what I want to be. Perhaps, my ideal self could come true. I know that aspiration does not necessarily constitute to be realized one day.  And, I don’t want to be an actor of the country, either.


(Q) 국민배우는 못 될 것 같다. 제레미 아이언스도 국민배우는 아니다. (웃음)
(Q)  I don’t think you will be an actor of the country, anyway. Jeremy Irons is not one of them, either. (laugh)

(A)  (웃음) 될 수 있는 방법이 있다고 해도 내가 그걸 원하지는 않을 것 같다.
(A)   (laughs) Whereas there is a way of becoming one, I don’t think I want that, anyway.


(Q)   요즘 마음 가는 장르나 캐릭터가 있나?
(Q)   Is there any genre or character got on your mind lately?

(A) 멜로가 하고 싶다. 그런데 만들어지는 멜로 자체가 없다. 당긴다. 뭔가 젖고 싶나 보지.(웃음) 소주 한잔 마시다 오늘은 김광석 노래에 젖어보고 싶은 그런 느낌. 파격적인 멜로도 해보고 싶다. 치정극, 이런 거. 한 번도 베드신을 해본 적이 없다. 밀도있는, 야한. 야하지만 단순히 야하지 않은 영화. <색, 계>가 야한 영화라고 생각하지 않는다. 생각만 해도 떨리고 두렵지만 그런 영화라면 제대로 된 베드신 해보고 싶긴 하다. 서른다섯과 마흔 사이에 제대로 된 멜로 한번 해보고 싶다. <러스트 앤 본> 같은 영화도 좋고. 최고의 남자 캐릭터인 것 같다. 하지만 점점 캐릭터만으로는 마음이 안 간다. 좋은 영화의 일원이 되고 싶지 그 영화에서 혼자 나 죽이지, 하는 건 재미없다. 그보다 좋은 사람들과 좋은 영화에 출연하고 싶다. 나무가 좋은 게 아니라 숲이 좋은 거다. 그런 게 점점 좋아진다. 나는 괜찮은 그림의 한 부분이 되고 싶다.
(A) I would like to do a melodrama. But there hardly exists a good one. Want to do that. Presumably I look forward to submerge myself in it. (Laughs) It feels like I could immerse myself beneath Kim Kwang Seok’s songs after drinking a couple shots of Soju.  I may try a weird love story, extreme passionate cases, and the like. I have never taken a bed scene with good sex scenario.  A movie with sex content but extends far more than simple sex scenes.  I think the movie ‘Lust Caution’ still got room to develop the sexy aspect.  Just thinking about that gives me chills.  I really want to shoot a great bed scene in a movie like that. I want to be in a real good love story movie when I am 35 ~ 40. I like ‘Rust and Bone’. I think this movie has the best male character in it. Nonetheless, the character itself is not the only criteria which attracted me. I want to be part of a good movie. It is not fun if I am the only shining star in a movie. I would rather be in a good movie with a great cast. It is the forest that I like most, not just the trees. I like that way more and more. I want to be part of a good picture.

Stills of GongYoo for 'The Suspect' revealed

The production company behind upcoming South Korean movie 'The Suspect', has today released a set of photos featuring lead actor GongYoo performing high difficulty action scenes.

From the photos, Gong Yoo is seen dashing on the roof top to avoid behind shot, jumping over the Han River Bridge railing, jumping from an 18 meter high vantage, car chase, and others. All of the high difficulty action scenes were personally completed by Gong Yoo himself.

In one of the photos, Gong Yoo is seen showing off his new gruff image and steely eyes when faced up against his enemy who is holding a weapon in his hand. This new wild image was vastly different to the gentle image that Gong Yoo is known for in his past productions.

‘The Suspect’ marks Gong Yoo’s return to the big screen after a 2 year hiatus following ‘Silenced’. Besides Gong Yoo, Park Hee Soon, Jo Sung Ha, You Da In, and others will also feature in ‘The Suspect’. Director Won Shin Yeon who was recognized for his work in the movie ‘Seven Days’, is at the helm of ‘The Suspect’, and left one looking forward to seeing his new movie.

The movie talks of a once elite North Korean spy Ji Dong Chul (Gong Yoo), who defects after getting betrayed by his country. He tries to seek out the ones who killed his wife and daughter, but becomes a prime suspect in a murder case. Ji Dong Chul becomes the suspect, as he tries to find the real killer to prove his innocence.

‘The Suspect’ will make its premiere this December in cinemas across South Korea.
