The Call

With an atmosphere so thick that you can cut it with a knife, director Lee Chung-hyun’s The Call is a nerve-racking supernatural thriller that would probably give the best of the best of the genre a run for its money.

That is, if you can forgive the cheesy, last minute add-on in its end credits.

Lee Chung-hyun, who also screenwrites the film, could have done without the cliched extravagance, and since I haven’t seen the original The Caller (2011) — a British-Puerto Rican production that The Call adapts from — I can’t really testify if the “call” (apologies for the pun) to add the last bit was Lee Chung-hyun’s dedication to the source material or his own indulgent undoing.

Still, this is a tense thriller with a Twilight Zone-ish tilt that takes a small while to pick up its pace.

Set in the present, Kim Seo-yeon (Park Shin-hye), a young woman visiting her ailing mother (Kim Sung-ryung) at their rundown rural home, finds an old cordless phone that supernaturally connects a call to 1999. On the other end of the line is Oh Young-sook (Jeon Jong-seo), another young girl who is often physically abused by her adopted mother, a local shaman (Lee El). Oh Young-sook lives in that very house and uses the very phone that Kim Seo-yeon uses.

The two bond but, unknown to Kim Seo-yeon (but not to the people who have seen the trailer), there is a reason why Oh Young-sook’s adopted mother keeps her under lock and key; the girl from the past is on the brink of becoming a serial killer.

On a strange whim one day, Oh Young-sook decides to help out Kim Seo-yeon by preventing the accident that would have killed the latter’s father — and so begins a mesmerising, time-bending story where the actions of the past dictate the state of the present.

The actresses are marvelous and Lee Chung-hyun, whose filmography I’ve yet to see, has a strong grip on the story, most of which is set within the confines of the house. There are surprising revelations right until the film’s climax.

Now if you could only let go of the last minute or so of the film, it would have been a classic.

Streaming now on Netflix, The Call is rated 16+. It is tense and brilliantly acted and directed

20 Best KDramas on Netflix Right Now

Updated December 12, 2020

Whether you agree or not, Netflix has more or less captured the essence of the Korean film industry with an unlimited supply of Korean dramas, movies, and documentaries. Not only many of them are exclusive to Netflix, but most of them have so far been unheard of, due to reasons like them being limited releases or restricted for only Korean television, etc. The wait is apparently over and on Netflix US, there are more than 40 different Korean television dramas that can be binge-watched.

Like Korean movies, the Korean television industry has flourished over the years, with show makers venturing into various genres like crimehorror, etc. along with the usual comedies and teenage romance dramas, which continue to be the most popular genres in Korean television. Everyone knows that Netflix has a vast choice for K-dramas. However, not all viewers are aware of which ones are worth their time. So, we are here to help you. Here’s the list of really good Korean dramas on Netflix that are available to stream right now:

20. The Inheritors (2013)

5254fd33cb1f0d3da1e82a41c45ecc00.gif

Kim Tan (Lee Min-Ho) and Cha Eun Sang (Park Shin Hye) meet in a chance encounter in Los Angeles, United States, and then again in Seoul, South Korea. Eun Sang’s mother is a housekeeper in Kim Tan’s family home and both Kim Tan and Eun Sang attend the same elite private school for the rich and the spoiled (Eun Sang is a scholarship kid, of course). They fall in love but are kept apart by the steep difference in their social classes. The show, even though exciting and energetic, falls victim to several common tropes and cliches of the older K-dramas that came before it. The highlight of the show is not the romance though, but the rivalry and the power struggle between Lee Min Ho and Kim Woo Bin’s characters, who are childhood frenemies.

Park Shin Hye Takes Viewers on a Thrilling Ride in Netflix’s “The Call”

By minna on December 8, 2020 in Korean Movie, NEWS

Fans of psychological thrillers can expect highly of Netflix’s latest crime addition, The Call, starring South Korean actresses Park Shin Hye and Jeon Jong Seo. Trending with relatively positive reviews, the movie is praised for a smooth and straightforward production complemented with powerful and hair-raising performances that give the audience chills.

Park Shin Hye The Call GIF - ParkShinHye TheCall TheHeirs GIFs

The Call tells a twisted story revolving around two women living in the same house but in different timelines. It begins in 2019 with Seo Yeon (played by Shin Hye) returning to her childhood home in a rural area to visit her sick mother. Home alone, she discovers an old cordless phone ringing and picks it up to only hear a stranger crying for help. She later finds out that the stranger is named Yeong Sook (played by Jong Seo), who used to live in her childhood home 20 years ago. They become friends while bonding over their differences in time, but little do they know that the seemingly small changes they made for each other turned out to be much bigger than they thought.

Sharing a similar plot to the 2016 drama Signal, in which two detectives from the past and present connect through a walkie-talkie, the film offered viewers a sense of familiarity. The production team also showed a detailed construction of two contrasting worlds by using different lightings to differentiate the two characters. The film’s lighting operator shared, “In Seo Yeon’s world, we used a blue tone to represent sadness and despair, while Yeong Sook’s world was red to reflect anger, danger, and violence.”

Since the story took place all in one house, some viewers praised the simplicity while others thought it was a shame because it restricted the horror to fit only inside a basket. Despite the suspense and surprise, the film lacked a sufficient core.

Viewers also disliked the cliff-hanging twist at the end, as the movie should have just ended when Seo Yeon’s mother appeared. Also, they believe that Seo Yeon had too little power against the psychotic and dominating Yeong Sook. A netizen expressed, “After her final scream, the audience thought there would be a huge counter-attack made by her, but there was none, so that was disappointing as there was nothing to look forward to.”

Movies And Munchies Reviews The Call

Feature Image
December 14, 2020
by CRYSTAL NGUONLY

In the Korean thriller The Call (2020), two women, connected by phone in the same home 20 years apart, have the ability to change each other fates. Directed by Lee Chung-hyeon, the film stars Park Shin-hye and Jeon Jong-seo. YouTuber Chris from the channel Movies And Munchies shares his thoughts on the film now streaming on Netflix.

Our two main characters are spectacular. I mean they each have qualities that make them very dynamic and very complex. There’s a lot of cunning and intelligence that each of them employs at different times and it makes just a lot of fun to watch and see how their minds work and how they’re going to figure out a puzzle of how to either help or hurt the other one.

Very much impressed with the two protagonists, the YouTuber finds the actors to have so much chemistry despite only having interactions over the phone and never in person or physically. The characters actions and interactions are believable, according to the YouTuber.

Chris also notes the dark tones of the film created by the visually dark setting that is at times broken up by some lightness and cheeriness, but at the same time gives the audience the sense of impending dread because of the way each scene strategically shifts back to the darker tone of uneasiness.

With so many different timelines of past and present, twists and turns in the plot, the film does a great job at adequately explaining all the different scenarios, says Chris who rates the film a 4.5/5.

YouTuber Chris from Movies And Munchies, rates and reviews new movies and TV shows on his channel regularly.

Cho Seung Woo And Park Shin Hye’s Fantasy Mystery Drama Wraps Up Filming

Cho Seung Woo And Park Shin Hye’s Fantasy Mystery Drama Wraps Up Filming

Dec 14, 2020
by J. K

JTBC’s upcoming 10th anniversary special drama “Sisyphus: The Myth” (working title) has now ended filming and headed into post-production.

“Sisyphus: The Myth” is a fantasy mystery drama that focuses on the genius engineer Han Tae Sool (Cho Seung Woo), who embarks on a perilous journey to find out the truth, and his savior Kang Seo Hae (Park Shin Hye), who has walked a long and dangerous path for him.

The drama is helmed by Jin Hyuk, who previously directed “The Legend of the Blue Sea,” “Doctor Stranger,” “Master’s Sun,” and more. It’s penned by the writer couple Lee Jae In and Jeon Chan Ho.

Cho Seung Woo’s character Han Tae Sool is the co-founder of the company Quantum and Time. Known as a genius among geniuses, he’s highly skilled in engineering and coding, with good looks on top of that. Han Tae Sool’s innovation has raised Quantum and Time to an international level, and he’s known as a national hero and a miracle in the world of Korean engineering. However, things are different in real life. After his older brother’s sudden death 10 years ago, his eccentric behavior has made the company’s stock fluctuate. Then one day, he finds out an unbelievable truth about his brother’s death, setting him off on a dangerous journey.

Park Shin Hye’s character Kang Seo Hae is a powerful warrior who slides down ropes between Seoul’s high-rise buildings, knocks down large men with her bare hands, and is skilled in everything from sniping to setting bombs and hand-to-hand combat. She mastered the skills she needed to survive in a world conquered by gangsters and warlords.

The production team stated, “We recently finished filming for ‘Sisyphus.’ With the cast and crew’s hard work and effort, we did our best to create a drama of the highest quality. The drama will therefore be satisfying and worth looking forward to.” They shared that they’ll now be turning their focus to post-production in order to create a higher quality work.

The top 10 Korean actors who ruled the industry in 2020:

Pinkvilla counts down the top 10 Korean actors of 2020 who absolutely ruled the industry. Did your favourite actor make the list?

Written By Ishani Sarkar  514558 reads  Mumbai  Updated: December 15, 2020 03:25 pm

South Korea is a goldmine of talent regardless of whether it comes from the acting industry or the music industry. With the huge international success of Korean films internationally this year, Korean actors have proved once more that they are some of the most talented artists of this generation. Whether it be in films or dramas and documentaries, they have shown their skill and talent on an unimaginably large scale and the world is finally catching up.

With the overwhelming success of Parasite at the Oscars, the general focus of the global film industry is turning towards South Korean talents. A decade ago, talent was measured mainly by participation in Hollywood/Western-centric/English language films. However, that has changed drastically over the years and 2020 might as well be considered a peak for such a change. A great many actors made names for themselves this year and some legendary actors retained their positions as the leaders of the acting industry in South Korea.

Here are the top 10 Korean actors of 2020:

Park Shin Hye (The Call, #ALIVE)

Park Shin Hye hit the jackpot with two os the highest grossing films in South Korea in 2020. Shin Hye plays brave women in both these films while also displaying a softness like no other. It is now a common fact that Park Shin Hye is one of the most talented actors in the industry.

Peninsula, The Call & more: Here are the top 10 Korean films of 2020 that you should watch

Korean films are attracting much attention from the global film industry. Here are the top 10 Korean films of 2020 that you should definitely watch.

Written By Ishani Sarkar  238814 reads  Mumbai  Published: December 15, 2020 02:23 pm
The official poster of #Alive.

2020 was an incredible year for Korean entertainment as the Hallyu wave reached corners of the globe never thought imaginable. K-Pop or Korean pop broke records on global platforms and one of the biggest K-Pop groups in the world, BTS, bagged a Grammy nomination in a major musical category. Even in a terrible pandemic, the Korean film industry continued working and churning out hits in full swing.

Due to South Korea’s incomparable COVID management, even box office collections could resume successfully. Internationally, with the help of OTT platforms, Korean films saw a whole new rise in popularity. If you’re yet to catch on with the wave, fret not for Pinkvilla has just the perfect list for you! From thrillers to romances to horror and comedy, we’ve got it all covered. If you’re looking for some of the best Korean films of 2020 for a holiday binge, look no further.

#Alive

Another masterpiece to come out of 2020, #Alive can best be described as a millennial zombie horror. Starring two of the best and highest-paid actors of the South Korean entertainment industry, Yoo Ah In and Park Shin Hye, this film strangely resonates perfectly with the global human condition right now. Forced to be locked inside his own apartment, a streamer’s struggle is charted against flesh-eating zombies.

The Call

Finally, Park Shin Hye and Jeon Jong Seo’s time travel masterpiece ‘The Call’ is the perfect candidate to wrap up this list. Seo-yeon (Park Shin-hye) and Young-sook (Jeon Jong-seo) are two women with an intertwined fate from different timelines who connect eerily through an old phone. The two get closer than expected in a short amount of time and their fates are turned upside down when one single change they make makes ripples big enough in time to ruin them. Horror, time travel, gore and crime thriller – these are the predominant themes in this film and we highly recommend you watch this as soon as possible!

South Korea’s Ten Biggest Movie Box Office Hits Of 2020

Joan MacDonaldContributor
I'm a journalist fascinated by Korean drama and film.

Although movie theaters were open in South Korea for much of 2020, social distancing restrictions on attendance and fears of contracting COVID19 resulted in the lowest number of movie tickets sold since the Korean Film Council began to record attendance in 2004. In 2019, 226 million movie tickets were sold, but as of Dec. 2020, that number was down to 58.4 million tickets.

International interest in Korean cinema was boosted by multiple 2020 Oscar wins for Bong Joon-ho’s film Parasite, but pandemic restrictions limited the number of Korean films shown in US theaters. Several films that opened in theaters in Korea went on to be shown via streaming platforms internationally. A few delayed their international release.

Fifth place goes to #Alive, starring Yoo Ah-in and Park Shin-hye, which revolves around the efforts of two apartment dwellers to survive a zombie apocalypse. It was released in South Korea on June 24, and globally via Netflix on Sept. 8. The film earned $14,477,081 domestically. Both Hitman Jun and #Alive were distributed by Lotte Cultureworks.
