Park Chan Wook is gearing up with his stellar team of screenwriters just as great as his lead characters.

Director Park Chan Wook really is not going to leave any stones unturned when it comes to his latest film which is his life-long passionate project. Besides his main role as the director, he is also participating in writing.

Director and screenwriter Lee Kyung Mi, who had worked previously as an assistant director/screenwriter in PCW’s movie, “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance,” and had worked with Son Ye Jin in “The Truth Beneath” as her director is also joining the team of screen writers for this new movie. Park Chan Wook was one of the screenwriters for her movie, “The Truth Beneath.”

Screen writer/Actor Don Mckeller, who had previously worked with Park Chan Wook on HBO’s “The Sympathizer” is also joining the team. Lastly, Lee Ja Hye (I couldn’t find her picture), who had worked with Director PCW in “Decision to Leave” and “The Handmaiden” is also joining the team. The anticipation is sky high.

Along with the stellar casts and the team of screenwriters, the first teaser poster for”Can’t Help It” is equally impressive and intriguing.

  • The first ones to caught my eye were these boxes which looks like those ‘Cardboard box of unemployment’ that we see in every dramas and movies where the laid-off individual is shown exiting with his belongings inside. It goes well with the main plot of the movie where the main character Yoo Man Soo has been fired from his job of 25 years.
  • The items inside each layer of boxes which might look like the secret our main character is holding among his belongings. Also, their placement order of items in the box looks symbolic of how our main character attempts to get his job back.
  • The serpent right at the front seems to represent the deceiving way our main character attempts to eliminate his rivals. For e.g. in the movie version of the “The Ax,” the main character publishes a fake news of job vacancy in the newspaper to enlist all his potential rivals. He collects all of their personal information and starts scheming this devilish plan to eliminate each and every one.
  • Of course the gun in the next layer being his weapon of his choice and the next step to eliminate his rivals. Since Korea has strict laws on possessing any firearms, I am curious how our main character comes to obtain his firearm.
  • In the third layer, we have our laid-off main character who orchestrated everything, or maybe his conscience idk. He looks ragged and miserable but the placing of the title of the movie, “I can’t Help It,” on his box seems like they want us to know his state of mind and his delusional justification for everything that he has been doing.
  • Finally, the apple tree in the center. The forbidden fruit? I am not well acquainted in biblical references but it’s the first thought that crossed my mind. The one that represented his temptation, his sin, and maybe his entire goal (job) to achieve, for which he was willing to risk everything.
  • Another thing I noticed is that there are 4 boxes in total. I might sound obsessed already but number 4 (Sa-사) symbolizes death in Asian superstitions so yeah. As expected from Director PCW’s movie and the characters that LBH represent the most. 😂

Director Park Chan-wook personally requested a hand-made paper for the props to use in his upcoming movie, “No Other Choice”

A blog shared by one of the paper manufacturer for the movie.

“I received a typewritten sample from the film prop manager. Size A4, white, 100 sheets on the thinnest paper possible. I tried recommending Hanji or cotton paper, but the director insisted that it had to be handmade paper. A clean white paper that is thin, flexible, wrinkle free, and retains the unique texture and natural beauty of handmade paper.”
