Director Woo Min Ho’s newest project, ‘Made in Korea’, is making waves with its star-studded potential cast. The drama, which draws from the turbulent events of South Korea’s recent history, particularly the dramatic era of the 1970s, has already confirmed the participation of Jung Woo Sung is considering taking on a leading role, adding an exciting layer of anticipation among fans.

‘Made in Korea’ is expected to be a big-budget film, with a reported production cost of around 70 billion won (approximately $52 million USD). This makes it one of the most expensive Korean drama ever made.

This ambitious project is particularly noteworthy as it represents Woo Min Ho’s first venture into a TV series. The director, celebrated for his deep and insightful exploration of historical and societal themes in films like ‘Inside Men’, ‘The Drug King’, and ‘The Man Standing Next’, is expected to bring his unique vision to the small screen.

It’s worth noting that despite initial rumors suggesting ‘Made in Korea’ might be a spin-off of ‘The Drug King’, these speculations have been clarified as unfounded. The drama and the film are distinct projects with no direct connection.

With a 70 billion KRW (approximately 58 million USD) budget, ‘Made in Korea’ stands as a major undertaking in the industry. With Jung Woo Sung confirmed and Hyun Bin potentially on board, the drama promises not only to delve into pivotal moments of Korea’s past but also to showcase the exceptional talents of its cast.

As ‘Made in Korea’ sails through pre-production, the team is setting their sights on beginning filming this summer.

It seems that this drama is a male centric drama but I wish there is an interesting female character as well. We`ll see.

I see why people thought it is a spinoff of movie The Drug King. The action of the movie took place in 1970 and  a prosecutor attemps to take down the drug smuggler.

In this drama Jung Woo-sung plays a prosecutor with "animal-like instincts and terrifying obsession" and I guess he will want to catch Hyun Bin`s character? I am curious about the plot. They promised a "captivating plot and grand scale" .

Movie Drug King ‘Spin-Off’, born into a 50 billion blockbuster drama

‘Made in Korea’ begins pre-production… Produced by Hive Media Corp, directed by Woo Mon-ho

IMG-3639.jpg

[DEAL SITE]
The film production company 'Hive Media Corp' is preparing to film the tentpole drama 'Made in Korea'. It is a spin-off of the movie 'Drug King', and it is reported that production costs approaching 50 billion won will be invested.

According to the cultural content investment industry on the 28th, Hive Media Corp is currently preparing pre-production for the drama 'Made in Korea'. Pre-production refers to the stage of finalizing script writing and hiring staff before filming. It is understood that most of the casting for the main and supporting roles has been completed. It is expected that filming will begin as early as next year.

Hive Media Corp is known to have set the production cost of 'Made in Korea' at 48 billion won. This amount may change as it is before filming. It is understood that the company is currently conducting project funding for multiple strategic investors (SI) and financial investors (FI). In the drama industry, unlike movies, production companies or co-production companies sometimes handle distribution and attract investment.

Hive Media Corp is said to have planned to supply ‘Made in Korea’ to online video services (OTT). Considering the high cost involved, it is expected that negotiations will be centered around global companies. There is also a possibility that it will be supplied as an original work. In this case, instead of handing over the copyright rights (IP) to the OTT, the production company receives a certain level of margin added to the production cost.

Director Woo Min-ho is said to be directing 'Made in Korea'. Director Woo worked with Hive Media Corp on the films ‘Inside Men’ (2015), ‘Drug King’ (2018), and ‘The Managers of Namsan’ (2020). Insiders said that Hive Media Corp.'s first work was a huge success, attracting 7.07 million theatergoers, and brought a lot of profit to the company. Director Woo also served as an executive director of Hive Media Corp.

'Made in Korea' is known to be a spin-off of the movie 'Drug King', which was screened in 2018. Drug King is a work based on a true story based on the motif of Korea's largest drug dealer who was active in the 1970s. The name of the drug produced and distributed by Lee Doo-sam (Song Kang-ho), the main character in the movie, is ‘Made in Korea.’ However, Drug King failed at the box office, attracting only 1.86 million theatergoers.

An official in the cultural content investment industry said, "Considering the production cost of the drama 'Made in Korea,' there is a strong possibility that it will be supplied to a global OTT," adding, "OTT may bear the production cost and organize it as an original work." He added, "The movie Drug King was edited in a disjointed way because it crammed a person's life into just over two hours, but the drama will not have such limitations."

Hive Media Corp was established in 2014. In addition to Insiders, he also produced the movies Princess Deokhye (2016) and Save Us from Evil (2020). The recently released ‘Spring in Seoul’ is also a work of this company. Spring in Seoul is a box office hit, exceeding 2 million viewers in just 6 days of its release.

Made in Korea’, a series that captures the modern and contemporary history of Korea in the 1970s [Knowledge Terminology]

2024.03.28

208691_414797_2043.png

[SISUN NEWS]
The globalization of proㅣK content is accelerating. Last year's film 'Crime City 3' (2023) to 'Spring in Seoul' (2023) not only achieved 10 million sales in the domestic market, but also dominated various OTT channels, including series such as 'Murderer's Entanglement' and 'Moving'. Meanwhile, there is news of the production of 'Made in Korea', a series that captures Korea's modern and contemporary history, and the OTT market appears to be becoming more vibrant.

'Made in Korea' is a new work released by Hive Media Corp, which produced the 10 million hit movie 'Spring in Seoul', and is a series that captures major events that penetrate the modern and contemporary history of the Republic of Korea in the 1970s. It was initially known as a spin-off version of the movie ‘Drug King’ (2018), but the production company dismissed this, saying it was “a completely different work.”

The lead roles include handsome actors Jung Woo-sung and Hyun Bin. The drama is Jung Woo-sung's first OTT starring role, and he plays the role of Jang Geon-yeong, a prosecutor with sharp instincts and tenacity. He played the role of Chief Prosecutor Han Kang-sik in the movie 'The King' (2017) and showed himself as a prosecutor with a bold and unyielding spirit. In addition, Jung Woo-sung, who has shown a strong presence and charismatic acting skills in his existing filmography, recently became a 10 million actor through 'Spring in Seoul', and expectations are high for what he will show through this work.

Additionally, this is Hyun Bin's first drama since the tvN drama 'Crash Landing on You', in which he co-starred with his wife, actress Son Ye-jin. Hyun Bin's role has not been revealed yet, and attention is being paid to what type of character she will have when she appears in 'Made in Korea' and what kind of character she will surprise the audience with.

Director Woo Min-ho, who directed ‘Inside Men’ (2015) and ‘Managers of Namsan’ (2020), took the lead. Director Woo is characterized by using heavy yet explicit violence and high-impact dialogue, and most of his films have a very clear masculinity and show a strong presence in the noir genre. I first met Hyun Bin, who appears this time, in the newly released movie 'Harbin'.

Director Woo also frequently uses the technique of close-ups of the actors' faces using lighting that emphasizes extreme contrast between light and dark, which brings out synergy with the actors' acting skills and shows an excellent ability to depict the characters' psychology.

Actors Jung Woo-sung and Hyun Bin, who make strong impressions and give good acting, make the audience anxious to see how they will be portrayed when they meet director Woo.

This is Director Woo's first attempt at a series. Hive Media Corp., which has presented major films based on vivid characters and sharp insight into the times, such as 'Inside Men', 'The Managers of Namsan', and Seoul Spring', will take charge of production and will bring out the full potential of Director Woo. It is expected that it will be possible.

‘Made in Korea’ is a masterpiece with a huge production cost of approximately 70 billion won. Considering the amount alone, it is expected to be a huge work, and with 'Insiders' director Woo Min-ho and actors Jung Woo-sung and Hyun Bin at the forefront, expectations for box office success are bound to rise.

The drama is said to be scheduled to begin filming this summer after the cast is completed.
