The Auditors: Episodes 3-4

by lovepark

Our auditors must find 3.4 billion won that has gone missing after a failed redevelopment project. This new case dredges up old memories and tests allegiances as our heroes must decide who to trust in a game filled with liars. However, no matter who the suspect may be, everyone is the same before the auditing team as they comb through the details to discover the truth.

EPISODES 3-4

The show is shaping up to be a typical police procedural drama, but instead of detectives, the heroes are auditors. This week’s case is the housing redevelopment embezzlement, and the main suspect is the director of the housing division YOO MI-KYUNG (special appearance by Hong Soo-hyun). The neighborhood union representative ran away with the funds — essentially, the life savings of the poor residents — and it is up to Cha-il and his crew to figure out if Mi-kyung is involved in this crime or just another victim.

While Cha-il is his usual aloof self, Mi-kyung tears up the moment she sees her university sunbae, and rumors about their torrid (and nonexistent) love story spread. It only worsens when Cha-il interviews Mi-kyung outside of work hours, and someone posts photos of them online, accusing the team leader of sexual assault. In reality, the only one harassed that night was Cha-il by a very drunk Han-soo who begged his boss to love him, too, and gave him a tap on the butt for good measure.

The assault charges put a wrench in Cha-il’s plan since he now only has a week to resolve everything before Mi-kyung’s transfer request to Florida is granted. Thankfully, one piece of the puzzle is answered quickly when Mi-kyung’s ex-husband reveals himself as the photographer, and Cha-il realizes that the two are in cahoots. Their divorce is a sham, and the more our auditors dig into this case, the more Mi-kyung looks suspicious of embezzlement.

While the housing redevelopment project takes center stage, in the background, a secondary plot brews. The two Hwang brothers continue their fight for power, and though President Hwang Se-woong acts righteous, he is all too eager to hand over control of the audit team to Dae-woong in exchange for him bribing a vice-minister to smooth over an inspection. Dae-woong can sense the president’s duplicity, but he still accepts the deal in order to cover up Mi-kyung’s crimes and fire Cha-il for insubordination.

Caught in the middle of this battle is Seo-jin who turns out to be Dae-woong’s niece. Given their history, I get the impression that the two are not related by blood, but regardless of their genetic ties, they clearly care for each other as family. As a result, Seo-jin finds herself in an awkward position: side with her uncle who has no one to trust in the office or help Cha-il find the money for the victims who are her old neighbors. At a crossroads, Seo-jin waffles between the two, but ultimately chooses to investigate the case with Cha-il and Han-soo.

With the clock ticking and Dae-woong breathing down their necks, Cha-il agrees to find the money within three days, and if he fails, he promises to resign and pay the missing amount out-of-pocket. All our team leader wants in return is for Dae-woong to cancel Mi-kyung’s transfer, which he does. It seems a bit extreme for a salaryman to wager, but I guess the show has to manufacture tension somehow. The stakes must be raised!

With the combined efforts of the auditing team (it’s really just Cha-il and the rookies because the others barely do anything in this department), they manage to find the link between Mi-kyung and the union representative. This leads them to a mountainside restaurant where they catch him, and our heroes deliver the criminal to the police on a silver platter. Alas, the real detectives prove their incompetence as the union rep stays silent during the interrogation and refuses to implicate his partners. Things get even more complicated when Dae-woong sends over an attorney to keep the union rep quiet, so Cha-il shifts gears.

Turning their attention to Mi-kyung’s husband, the auditing team pieces together the random facts they gathered and figures out his laundering method. They then discover a fourth partner, a woman on the finance team of a different construction company who is currently having an affair with Mi-kyung’s husband. Armed with this new information, Cha-il informs Mi-kyung of her husband’s infidelity, but she refuses to believe him without concrete evidence. Thus, our rookies tail the husband and his affair partner, catching them entering and leaving a hotel together.

In the meantime, the husband hires two truck drivers to nearly run over Cha-il’s car, but at this point, near-death experiences must be par for the course in their line of work since our auditors brush it off as a mere inconvenience. They also chase cars, scale buildings, and jump on moving vehicles in order to catch their target, but when Cha-il opens the husband’s trunk, the money is missing. The camera cuts to Mi-kyung dressed to the nines and on her way to freedom after tricking everyone.

The newly released behind-the-scenes video beautifully captures the warm off-screen chemistry between Shin Ha Kyun and Lee Jung Ha on the set of their drama. While filming Gu Han Soo’s drunken scene, Shin Ha Kyun displays thoughtful consideration towards his co-star, fostering a relaxed atmosphere full of laughter. The Auditors: Episodes 5-6

by lovepark

Our auditors receive a message about corruption within the company along with a threat that harms a dozen employees. In order to unmask the culprit, our team will have to ruffle some feathers, but with a major event coming down the pike, they will have to keep the investigation a secret. However, as they dig into the past, the answer that awaits them may not be as simple as their previous cases.

EPISODES 5-6

This week starts with a threatening letter and twelve hospitalizations from a blackmailer who poisoned the cafeteria food. This spurs an investigation by the auditing team, and the person under fire is Director Pyeon In-ho of the outsourcing department. Director Pyeon manages over a hundred subcontractors totaling trillions of won in expenses for the company, and on-site cafeterias happen to be just one of them. As a result, when the auditing team comes to question him, Director Pyeon views their presence as a humiliation since he used to be the previous president’s right-hand.

Speaking of the previous president, the eldest Hwang brother makes marked improvements and may wake from his coma in the near future. When Se-woong hears the news, he congratulates his sister-in-law, but his expression contorts as he stares at his brother, suggesting that he may not be ready to relinquish power. In fact, Se-woong has a big demonstration coming up for the launch of “J-BIMS” which he believes will be the future of the company. As a result, he needs all attention focused on this event and orders Cha-il to keep the cafeteria poisoning on the down-low.

Thus, our auditors begin their secretive investigation, and the two youngest head over to the cafeteria where the poisoning happened. As they interview the owner, Dae-woong and Director Yang barge in, but the vice president’s usual hot temper mellows as soon as he sees his niece at work. However, their relationship isn’t the only one hiding in plain sight since Director Yang exchanges worried glances with the cafeteria owner (e.g., his child’s widowed mother-in-law).

Director Yang turns to Dae-woong for help since he knows Cha-il will discover their connection eventually, and though he did not technically bribe Director Pyeon in any traceable manner, it is impossible to completely conceal his lobbying given their positions. Dae-woong takes this as another personal attack, and as usual, he covers up any corruption in order to support his people. At least in this case unlike the tower crane incident, there really isn’t much evidence against either director, and Dae-woong uses this win to make Cha-il apologize for his reckless investigation (someone is still sore about last time).

Cha-il agrees to post a public apology without much fuss, but his uncharacteristic compliance is actually a ruse. While digging through Director Pyeon’s files, the auditing team found out that the agency they hired was scamming restaurant owners, and while JU Construction had no legal responsibility in the matter, their lack of oversight still caused businesses to go under. On top of all that, Cha-il (and Han-soo a bit later) realized that the blackmailer must be an insider, so he used the apology as bait to lure them out.

As predicted, the blackmailer strikes again, and though our auditors caught him in the act, they didn’t quite figure out the actual “catching” part. In the end, the blackmailer escapes, but this failed mission isn’t a total loss. Rather than work alone, Cha-il utilizes his entire team’s talents, and they narrow down the list of suspects to three people. The first two are dead ends, which leads them to their last possibility: the haggard chief working under Director Pyeon.

After cornering the chief in the company lobby, Cha-il gives the blackmailer a chance to share his side of the story, so he does. Two years ago, his mother thought she won the JU construction cafeteria contract after paying the agency a hefty sum, but as it turned out, she was scammed. Though he reported the incident to the auditing team back then, they ignored it. While he tried to uncover the truth alone, his mother fell ill and took her life, which was what finally pushed him over the edge.

While Cha-il understands his reasoning, he tells the chief that his methods were wrong and proposes his dismissal to the president. He also suggests the company take moral responsibility by helping the victims with legal fees and punish Director Pyeon for negligence by cutting his pay for three months. Se-woong agrees with his proposal, but to Cha-il’s surprise, the president decides on a harsher penalty for the director by transferring him to a branch factory. It’s obvious that Se-woong is using Cha-il as a tool to solidify his control over the company, but at this moment, there isn’t much our auditor can do to stop it.

Though our heroes solved the case, they also learned how their own complacency while under their previous leadership caused this issue to fester, so Han-soo wishes to rebuild trust between the auditing department and the rest of the company. He also views Cha-il as his mentor now, and the younger man’s enthusiasm and naivety reminds our team leader of his past when he used to trust those above him, too.

Just as our auditors settle one case, another takes its place. This time, an employee from the technology development department named Oh Yoon-woo threatens to set himself on fire in order to report workplace bullying. Thankfully, Dae-woong steps in before anyone gets hurt, and Han-soo escorts Yoon-woo to the auditing department for questioning.

I did not pay attention to the relationship between Hwang brothers but it is an interesting dynamic. The oldest is in the coma and the other two have not a good relationship. When the wife of former CEO (the oldest brother) said to Hwang Se-Woong that when Hwang Gun-Woong will wake up they will fire Hwang Dae-Woong. The youngest is a half brother and they don`t want to see him there.   It is obvious that Dae Woong is struggling to stay at JU Construction (there is a subtle power struggle) but I think, despite showing a happy face when his brother is having signs of recovering, the CEO (Hwang Se-Woong) is not really that happy. He wants to remain in power. He brought Shin Cha-Il to Audit Team for his own interest. Cha Il is doing the best to discover coruption but I don`t think Hwang Se Woong is interested in having a clean company. He is happy to dispose the old people, the people who are clossed to the former CEO and the vice president.  I have a feeling that he is using Shin Cha Il right now. Let see how happy he will be when the Audit team will investigate his own people.

In the last episode, Shin Cha-Il was chasing Mr. Im to the roof but he found the CEO instead. I even thought that Hwang Se-Woong was the culprit or made the culprit escape. LOL Of course he was not but I don`t think that scene was random. It might be a subltle hint that the CEO is 'providing' the cases for the Audit team. I can`t  shake off the thought that the present CEO is using Shin Cha Il for his own interest.

Hwang Dae Woong might seem the bad guy here because he took the side of the corrupt people but he is trying to protect some pieces from the `chess board` in his fight to survive at the company. Seo Gil-Pyo showed that he is on VP`s side, he is out. The other guy, Yang Jae-Seung , almost was out too. Good thing he was not involved directly in hiring his sister in law. Pyeon In-Ho, one of the right hand of the former president, out. This is not a coincidence. The problem for Hwang Se Woong is that if Shin Cha Il will have to investigate him, he won`t escape because he hired him.

I don`t remember exactly the words, but one of the elders, an important shareholders, I assume, knew about the former CEO condition and told the current CEO that he deosn`t want to see a fight between brothers. But there is a fight for power. It is not in front of the eyes, but not everything is alright. Hwang Se Woong looks so `innocent`! He wants to fight corruption at his company! I am not buying. It looks like the company`s hope to recover is Technology Development Team succes. The bullying case was just a scratch. Let see what other problems there are there.

What I found weird was how Shin Cha il had han soo interview video if it had disapeared?

Perhaps the video did not disapeared or it appeared later . It was a convenient mistake to not find the documents at first.

I thought those paper disappeared with a `purpose` but maybe it was a problem with the recruting. Or maybe not.

Definitely, the first rumor was about Goo Han-Soo and later Yoon Seo-Jin  was targeted. I think Seo Jin is a colateral victim. I am sure  Hwang Dae-Woong was the final target.

It can`t be a coincidence that two of Shin Cha Il team members had problems just when Hwang Se-Woong realized that Cha Il is not easy to deal with. We`ll see. Of course, the current CEO did not show any clear evidence that he is the mastermind behind it but I don`t trust him. 😆 He doesn`t help when I saw his face when he thought his older brother wake up from coma. I saw horror on his face not joy. 😅 Kudos to Jung Moon-Sung! I saw a duality on his face in that scene.

Totally. Seo jin is just colateral victim.

In the preview of ep 9. The current CEO asked Shin Cha Il if it is not a problem if the vice president is close to an employee and told him to investigate again. It doesn`t seem that Hwang Se Woong knows about his half brother `s family or he knows but wants the investigation anyway.

My question is.... why Shin Cha Il wants to investigate Seo Jin in the fraudulent employment case when the team  have investigated her already and she was fine. She had good grades, they saw  the interview, the test results. What else do they want more? I can assume they thought she has a connection with the VP (I guess they think it is a romantic relationship until they will find that they are siblings) but the relationship doesn`t affect anyone. She doesn`t work directly with him. Do they think he/she falsified the results of the test? I find it exagerated. I think Hwang Se Woong wanted the audit to investigate his brother. That`s for sure but I don`t think the audit has enough evidence to start an extern audit investigation to find dirt about Vice President just because of a rumor on internet after they investigated Yoon Seo Jin already.  I wonder if Shin Cha Il doesn`t realise he is used as an weapon right now.

I am curious about the Hwang brothers. The youngest seem to have a different mother but he grew up with his father and later he became close to his other family?
