On November 16, Kim Tae Ri’s agency Management mmm shared, “It’s true that Kim Tae Ri has received a casting offer from the producers of ‘Jung Nyeon’ [literal title]. It’s one of the projects she is considering.”

Based off a webtoon of the same name, “Jung Nyeon” is set in the 1950s and tells the story of Yoon Jung Nyeon, a young girl from Mokpo who has no money or education, but is born with a talented singing voice. The historical drama follows the happenings that occur when Yoon Jung Nyeon joins a women’s traditional theater company to achieve her dreams of becoming rich.

Kim Tae Ri has received an offer to play the titular role of Yoon Jung Nyeon. This offer is especially exciting for fans of both the actress and webtoon as the original webtoon artist Namon has stated that they referenced Kim Tae Ri’s character in “The Handmaiden” while creating the character Yoon Jung Nyeon.

Kim Tae Ri is currently set to make her drama return next year in SBS’s upcoming mystery thriller “Demon” (working title).

Kim Tae Ri will reportedly give life to the main character of the webtoon-based K-drama "Jung Nyeon."

"Jung Nyeon" will tell the story of a Mokpo girl who doesn't own or learn anything in the 1950s. She decided to enter a women's Gukgeuk Company because she aims to become rich. This series will base its story on the Naver webtoon of the same name. 

It was revealed that Kim Tae Ri's character in the 2016 film "The Handmaiden" was the model reference in the webtoon. 

On November 16th, several media outlets reported that Kim Tae Ri will be the protagonist of the upcoming drama. Her agency Management MMM responded to the casting reports. According to them, this drama is one of the works that Kim Tae Ri is currently reviewing. 

"Jung Nyeon" will reportedly start filming in the second half of 2023.

 

 

If Kim Tae Ri confirms her casting, this will be her second upcoming project for 2023. It was recently revealed that the actress will also lead the upcoming drama "The Demon" written by Kim Eun Hee ("Jirisan," "Kingdom," and "Signal"). Kim Tae Ri will be working with Oh Jung Se, Hong Kyung, and Jin Seon Kyu in the k-drama.

In 2022, Kim Tae Ri collected more fans after starring in the hit tvN series "Twenty-Five Twenty-One" with Nam Joo Hyuk, Bona, Choi Hyun Wook, Lee Joo Myung, and Seo Jae Hee.

She also worked alongside Ryu Joon Yeol, Kim Woo Bin, So Ji Sub, Yeom Jung Ah, and Jo Woo Jin in the film "Alienoid."

Shin Ye Eun will reportedly work alongside Kim Tae Ri in a webtoon-based K-drama.

On February 22, media outlets reported that Shin Ye Eun will be joining the upcoming K-drama Jeong Nyeon wherein Kim Tae Ri is also in talks. 

Shin Ye Eun's agency npio Entertainment responded to the reports. The agency confirmed that Shin Ye Eun did receive the offer and she is positively considering the offer to star in the series. 

 Jeong Nyeon will base its story on the webtoon of the same name written by Seo Irae and illustrated by Namon. It will depict the story of a Mokpo girl born in the 1950s after the Korean war. It will showcase her journey in chasing her dream of becoming a popular star and being rich.

On the other hand, Heo Yeong Seo is a financially blessed noblewoman who is also pursuing the same dream as Jeong Nyeon. Jeong Nyeon will be directed by Jung Ji In who previously directed The Red Sleeve, re-written by A Time Called You's screenwriter Choi Hyo Bi.

Jeong Nyeon is based on a traditional musical webtoon of the same name, it won the Manhwa of the Year award in 2019 for depicting Yeonsong Gukgeuk art performance which lost its popularity due to modernization. It is an art form that was performed by all-female artists who take up roles for both male and female characters. Yeonsong Gukgeuk uses Pansori as the prime instrument for narrating stories of war and romance in the 1950s. As the world accepted the industrial revolution and welcomed broadcasting media, Yeonsong Gukgeuk had to bid farewell. The two co-authors Seo Ireh and Namon were praised by Korean netizens for they not only helped preserve the art form but also remarkable storytelling through the webtoon.

[Herald Interview] 'Jeong-nyeon' webtoon creators shed light on traditional all-women musical troupe

Compelling webtoon adapted into traditional Korean musical, TV series

In the 1950s, when there was little entertainment available, it was female "gukgeuk" that dominated the entertainment scene in Korea.

Like a musical, a "gukgeuk" performance features "pansori," or narrative singing, dance and drama.

What was special about gukgeuk in those days was that many troupes featured an all-female cast.

The actors took on male roles and dressed up as men, children or the elderly and played heroes or villains in melodramatic tales of war and romance, gaining huge popularity.

It was so popular that the troupes even performed during the Korean War, putting up shows in Busan, the southern seaport. The shows drew large crowds who lined up from dawn to catch a performance.

However, gukgeuk's popularity was short-lived and soon faded into history after television and films began to take over in the 1960s.

Revisiting the lost performing art are writer Seo Ireh and illustrator Namon, who have recreated the story of gukgeuk artists in its golden age through the historical webtoon “Jeong-nyeon.”

The pair ran the series on Naver Webtoon, South Korean tech giant Naver's web-based cartoon platform, from April 2019 to May 2022, to much positive review. Publisher Munhak Dongne has been publishing graphic novel editions, with its upcoming volume six scheduled for a March release, with exclusive post-credits scenes.

The gripping story is now adapted into "changgeuk" by the National Changgeuk Company of Korea, scheduled to premiere on March 17. It is also being adapted for a television drama series.

One sentence about female gukgeuk that Seo came across while taking a class on Korean modern literature was what started it all.

“One of my friends tossed me a research paper on female gukgeuk after we read about it in class. It was so interesting. How could something so popular be forgotten in less than 100 years?” said Seo during a recent interview with The Korea Herald, together with Namon.

“It made me sad and I wanted people to know more about this history,” Seo said.

“It was difficult to find anything, actually. All the books and scripts were lost or out of print. We relied mostly on a few video documentaries and oral data that were recorded during the 1990s when there was a brief movement to revive female gukgeuk,” said Seo.

 

Namon said she was intrigued when Seo first approached her about the story.

"We had always wanted to do work together with a bit of a queer element. I loved the fact that there would be so many different female characters I could draw and was thrilled about the episodes we could create,” said Namon.

The coming-of-age webtoon depicts the development of a female training troupe affiliated with a gukgeuk company in the 1950s. The heroine, Jeong-nyeon, is a talented girl from the port city of Mokpo, South Jeolla Province, who dreams of life as an actor. Jeong-nyeon shines as a trainee and together with her friends and rivals, they strive to become the best gukgeuk performers.

A compelling portrayal of different female characters captivates the readers throughout: from Young-seo, Jeong-nyeon’s rival who craves validation from her family, to Bu-yong, Jeong-nyeon’s love interest who suffers under social expectations.

“Each character has a certain personality, so it wasn't too difficult to draw them differently. Jeong-nyeon is active, energetic and from Mokpo, so I drew her with tanned skin. Young-seo is from an elite family and a perfectionist. So she ties her hair up in a sleek ponytail,” said Namon.

The two attribute the webtoon’s success to its powerful storytelling and “the right timing.”

“One reader sent me a photo of her grandmother reading this webtoon in the graphic novel edition. Her grandmother had seen female gukgeuk when she was young,” Namon said.

“I was delighted to see that for the younger generation this is an opportunity to get to know gukgeuk whereas, for the older generation, our work reminds them of their childhood.”

Seo said it also comes at a time when there is a heightened interest in female narratives.

“I’ve been working on female-led works since my debut but I cannot believe the level of interest we are getting with 'Jeong-nyeon.' I have heard many say that they had been waiting for something like this,” she added.

Seo and Namon said they are looking forward to seeing their webtoon adapted into a live performance.

“We are thrilled to see our story and drawings come alive on stage and on television, especially the dances and the plays-within-a-play.”

There are no reports yet on the next project of the actress after her villain role in  The Uncanny Counter Season 2: Counter Punch.

Jung Eun Chae will Reportedly Replace Kim Hi Eo Ra in "Jeong Nyeon"

Jung Eun Chae will reportedly be joining the webtoon-based K-drama Jeong Nyeon.

The media outlet Star News reported on August 9th that Jung Eun Chae will be replacing Kim Hi Eo Ra who recently announced that she is stepping down from Jeong Nyeon. 

Jung Eun Chae's agency KeyEast responded to the reports. According to the company, "Jung Eun Chae did receive the offer to star in Jeong Nyeon. She is currently in the reviewing stage and nothing has been decided yet."

If Jung Eun Chae officially accepted the offer, this will be her first K-drama for 2023. She was last seen in the 2022 Coupang Play original K-drama Anna together with miss A's Bae Suzy, Kim Joon Han, Park Ye Young, Heo Hyung Kyu, and Kang Shin Chul. 

This year, the actress starred in the film Maybe We Broke Up with Lee Dong Hwi, Kang Gil Woo, and Jung Da Eun.

Jung Eun Chae made her acting debut in the 2010 movie Haunters. Since then, she has starred in various K-dramas and films. 

She is known for being part of the works Pachinko, The King: Eternal Monarch, The Guest, Dr. Frost, The Great Battle, The King, The Fatal Encounter, and more. 

 

 

Jeong Nyeon will be a star-studded K-drama led by Kim Tae Ri, Shin Ye Eun, Moon So Ri, Ra Mi Ran, and Kim Yoon Hye. 

The K-drama will base its story on a hit webtoon of the same name created by Seo Irae and Namon. The story will revolve around the Mokpo girl named Yoon Jeong Nyeon from the 1950s who was born with no money or education.  It will reveal her journey as she enters the women's traditional theater company to achieve her goal of becoming rich. 

The upcoming K-drama will be the collaboration work of hitmakers director Jung Ji In (The Red Sleeve) and writer Choi Hyo Bi (A Time Called You and Babysitter).

There are no details yet on the character that Jung Eun Chae will possibly portray. 

Meanwhile, reports stated that the production of Jeong Nyeon already began the filming test last week.

Kim Tae Ri, Shin Ye Eun, Ra Mi Ran, and Moon So Ri will be starring in a new drama together!

Based off a webtoon, “Jeong Nyeon” (romanized title) is set in the 1950s and tells the story of Yoon Jeong Nyeon, a young girl from Mokpo who has no money or education but is born with a talented singing voice. The historical drama follows the happenings that occur when Yoon Jeong Nyeon joins a women’s traditional theater company to achieve her dreams of becoming rich.

Kim Tae Ri takes on the role of Yoon Jeong Nyeon, a pansori (Korean genre of musical storytelling) prodigy who moves to Seoul to become a member of Korean Traditional Woman’s Opera.

Shin Ye Eun plays the role of Heo Young Seo, who has solid skills in singing, dancing, and acting as well as a rich family background and forms a rivalry with Yoon Jeong Nyeon.

Ra Mi Ran, who led the drama “The Good Bad Mother” to great success, raises anticipation for the new drama by taking on the role of Kang So Bok, the leader of Mae Ran Korean Traditional Woman’s Opera who has a charismatic and straightforward personality.

Lastly, Moon So Ri, who impressed through the drama “Queen Maker,” will portray Yoon Jeong Nyeon’s mother Seo Yong Rye, who used to be called a genius pansori singer but buries her splendid times after retirement and raises Jeong Nyeon all alone.

Kim Tae-Ri cast in drama series “Jeong-Nyeon”

Kim Tae-Ri is cast for the title role in drama series “Jeong-Nyeon.” Shin Ye-Eun and Ra Mi-Ran are cast for major supporting character roles, while Moon So-Ri is also cast for a special appearance. The drama series is set in the 1950’s and follows Kim Tae-Ri as Yoon Jeong-Nyeon. She attempts to become a theater actress.

Filming for “Jeong-Nyeon” will begin October, 2023 and the drama series will likely air sometime in 2024. The broadcast network/streaming platform for the drama series has not yet been decided.

Plot Synopsis by AsianWiki: In the 1950’s, right after the Korean War, Yoon Jeong-Nyeon (Kim Tae-Ri) barely makes a living by selling clams with her mother Seo Yong-Rye (Moon So-Ri) in Mokpo. Her dream is to go to Seoul and work as an actress for a woman’s gukguek theater company, while becoming rich. One day, Yoon Jeong-Nyeon watches a performance by the Maeran Woman’s Gukguek Theater Company, which is led by Director Kang So-Bok (Ra Mi-Ran). The theater company came to Mokpo from Seoul during their nationwide tour. Seeing their performance, Yoon Jeong-Nyeon is inspired to turn her dream into reality. She secretly gets into the luggage compartment of the Maeran Woman’s Gukguek Theater Company and soon becomes a trainee for the theater company in Seoul. There, she meets Heo Young-Seo (Shin Ye-Eun). Kim Tae-ri joins a women’s performing troupe in Jung-nyun

Production on period drama Jung-nyun is in full swing, and they’ve found their titular character in Kim Tae-ri (Revenant) and main cast in Shin Ye-eun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse), Ra Mi-ran (Cold Blooded Intern), and Moon So-ri (Race).

Based on the webtoon of the same name, the story follows Jung-nyun, a young girl in 1950s postwar Korea, as she follows her dreams to join an all-female gukgeuk, or musical theater troupe. For those that don’t know what gukgeuks are (a.k.a., me before I did some googling), they’re dramatic performances where women would play both male and female roles (think: a gender-swapped Shakespeare), allowing them to band together, financially support themselves, and break into the male-dominated theatrical space. That is, before government interference in the 70s forced many of these performances to halt, wiping them from the cultural zeitgeist.

 

It’s in that brief pocket of Korean history when gukgeuk flourished that our story takes place. It all starts when a traveling troupe, led by Kang So-bok (Ra Mi-ran), visits Jung-nyun’s hometown. Inspired to become a performer herself, Jung-nyun stows away in the troupe’s train bound for Seoul and joins them as a trainee. But it’s not all spotlights and applause for Jung-nyun, especially when she has to compete with her rival, the multi-talented ace Heo Young-seo (Shin Ye-eun).

Rounding out the main cast, Moon So-ri plays Jung-nyun’s mother, a retired pansori singer and single mother who abandoned her dreams in favor of raising Jung-nyun. I just know many tears (mainly mine) will be shed at the portrayal of their mother-daughter relationship.

With all this girl power on the page, I’m interested to see how this drama will navigate its themes of girlhood, ambition, and female solidarity in this unique historic context. Written by Choi Hyo-bi (A Time Called You) and directed by Jung Ji-in (The Red Sleeve Cuff), Jung-nyun will air sometime next year.

Woo Da Vi is confirmed to work with  Kim Tae Ri, Shin Ye Eun, Ra Mi Ran, Moon So Ri, Jung Eun Chae, and Oh My Girl's Hyun Seung Hee in the upcoming K-drama Jeong Nyeon.

On February 5, Woo Da Vi's agency announced that the actress will be participating in the upcoming K-drama  Jeong Nyeon. She will be working closely with main leads Kim Tae Ri and Shin Ye Eun.

This will be her second upcoming K-drama. She will also join the upcoming web K-drama The Diary of My Fan Life with Kim So Hee and Hong Eun Ki. She is also part of the K-drama Dear.M that will reportedly premiere on KBS this year. 

Woo Da Vi was last seen in the 2023 K-drama Maestra: Strings of Truth. She portrayed the role of the younger version of Lee Young Ae's character Cha Se Eum. She was praised for her performance in the recently ended series.

The actress made her acting debut in 2019. She has starred in several K-dramas such as Extracurricular, Live On, At a Distance, Spring Is Green, Melancholia, Poong, the Joseon Psychiatrist Season 2, and more.
