Kim So Hyun, Chae Jong Hyeop, Dasom, And Lee Won Jung Explore First Love Among Misunderstandings In "Serendipity's Embrace"

Jul 17, 2024

The upcoming romance drama “Serendipity’s Embrace” has released new stills from the characters’ school days!

Based on a popular webtoon, “Serendipity’s Embrace” will tell the story of young people finding true love and their dreams after accidentally running into their first love from 10 years ago. Kim So Hyun stars as Lee Hong Joo, an animation producer who is afraid of love due to painful memories from her previous relationship—and who undergoes an unexpected change after running into Kang Hoo Young (Chae Jong Hyeop), who witnessed some of her lowest moments from her past.

The released photos hint at the tangled first loves of Lee Hong Joo, Kang Hoo Young, Kim Hye Ji (Dasom), and Kwon Sang Pil (Lee Won Jung). One photo shows a confident Lee Hong Joo handing a love letter to Kang Hoo Young amid a crowd of noisy male students. However, the love letter actually belongs to her best friend Kim Hye Ji. Too nervous to deliver the letter herself, Kim Hye Ji asks Lee Hong Joo to play cupid for her.

Kang Hoo Young stares blankly at the love letter handed to him by Lee Hong Joo. The subtle change in his expression is intriguing, especially since he rarely shows his emotions. The first to notice this shift in the usually cynical Kang Hoo Young is his self-proclaimed best friend, Kwon Sang Pil. With curiosity, Kwon Sang Pil watches Kang Hoo Young’s complex reaction to Lee Hong Joo’s presence. This suggests significant changes are coming for them. All eyes are now on the unfolding story of Lee Hong Joo, Kang Hoo Young, and Kim Hye Ji’s first loves at 19 and the impact of the love letter Lee Hong Joo delivered.

The production team said, “The story of these young people, who begin their first love at 19 by chance and find true love by 29, will offer delightful laughs and deep excitement. Look forward to the synergy of Kim So Hyun, Chae Jong Hyeop, Dasom, and Lee Won Jung as they evoke memories of first love.”

“Serendipity’s Embrace” premieres on July 22 at 8:40 p.m. KST and will be available on Viki.

Premiere Watch: Serendipity’s Embrace

by missvictrix

photo1848983.webp

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Rom-com, youth
Episode count: 8
Global Streamer: Viki

Reasons to watch: The reasons to watch this drama need not be ennumerated, as they are so obvious, if they were each snakes… well, we’d be in a snake pit! To get that terrible image out of your head, here’s what we can expect: the wonderful and adorable Kim So-hyun returns in a short-form drama where she’s reunited with her first love Chae Jong-hyeop (aka, King Puppy — my nickname, not the show’s) and the hijinks hit.

The drama also features second leads Dasom and Yoon Ji-on, the latter of whom I have been cheering for since forever. For another random tidbit, this drama also reunites Kim So-hyun and Yoon Ji-on after last year’s My Lovely Liar.

TL;DR: The cuteness is so cute that it hurts, and the drama hasn’t even premiered yet

Kim So Hyun And Chae Jong Hyeop Enjoy Playful Amusement Park Date In "Serendipity's Embrace"

Jul 23, 2024
by M Lim

tvN’s latest drama “Serendipity’s Embrace” has released exciting previews ahead of its second episode!

Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, “Serendipity’s Embrace” tells the story of young people finding true love and fulfilling their dreams after accidentally running into their first love from 10 years ago.

Spoilers

Previously, Lee Hong Joo and Kang Hoo Young reunited again after 10 years. While Lee Hong Joo pessimistically remarked that first loves will reach their expiration date once defrosted, Kang Hoo Young made a cryptic confession, saying, “Mine seems to have started defrosting already.”

The newly released stills capture Lee Hong Joo and Kang Hoo Young’s intriguing amusement park date. Despite previously describing Hoo Young’s past self as a “pre-schooler with only brains but lacking human touch,” Hong Joo’s gaze at him now is tender, indicating a possible shift in her feelings.

Hoo Young, pausing his typically cynical demeanor, also flashes a bright smile. Donning a fox headband and enjoying the carousel, his cheerful expression hints at a transformation.

On the other hand, other stills also preview a tense meeting between Lee Hong Joo and her first love Bang Joon Ho (Yun Ji On), who reenters her life to collaborate with her company, Peter’s Pen. Following their painful breakup, Hong Joo seems displeased by Joon Ho’s reappearance, while Joon Ho smiles warmly despite Hong Joo’s cold stare. These images heighten anticipation for the backstory of how Hong Joo, once earnest about love, became a skeptic, and the impact of Joon Ho’s return on her.

The production team hinted, “In Episode 2 airing today, Hong Joo experiences an exciting change. Chae Jong Hyeop And Kim So Hyun Talk About

Chae Jong Hyeop And Kim So Hyun Talk About "Serendipity's Embrace," First Love, Their School Days, And More

Chae Jong Hyeop and Kim So Hyun joined W Korea magazine for a stunning photo shoot!

After posing for the pictorial, the two stars of the new series “Serendipity’s Embrace” sat down for an interview to discuss their drama, share their thoughts on first love, and reflect on their school days.

The highly-anticipated drama “Serendipity’s Embrace,” which is based on a webtoon, has already generated a lot of buzz. The series is directed by Song Hyun Wook, known for the hit dramas “Another Miss Oh” and “Beauty Inside,” and written by emerging writer Park Geu Ro.

When asked about how they wound up joining the drama, Chae Jong Hyeop said, “The title caught my attention. It’s a story about a first love encountered by chance. It vaguely reminded me of my school days.”

Kim So Hyun added, “When I first received the script, I hadn’t read the webtoon. As I read it, I felt a tickling excitement. It’s not easy for a script to be fun to read without grand plot developments or provocative elements. That alone made me want to try it. I also felt that if I didn’t work on a youth drama like this now, I might not have the chance later.”

chae-jong-hyeop-kim-so-hyun-w-korea-2.pn

When asked about their memories of first love, Chae Jong Hyeop replied, “What can I say about first love? I think it’s a word that reminds me of those times [in the past]. It’s difficult to define first love exactly. It could be the person you first liked or the first person you dated. For me, I think your first love is the person who comes to mind first when you hear that word.”

Meanwhile, Kim So Hyun shared, “Through this drama, I developed many fantasies about first love. When I think of first love, I think it might feel like the emotions I had when I was young and still wore a school uniform. I liked the portrayal of first love in ‘Serendipity’s Embrace’ because it felt more realistic.”

Spoiler

Discussing what kind of students they were at 19, Kim So Hyun said, “Because I started acting when I was very young, I don’t have many memories from my school days. At 19, I experienced difficult growing pains. It was a transitional period before becoming an adult, and I felt like I was gradually losing myself. When I was young and someone asked me, ‘What kind of person do you think you are?’ I had a lot to say, but starting from a certain point onward, I didn’t know what to say anymore. I struggled with the questions, ‘What kind of person am I? What do I like?’ After turning 20, I slowly worked through these concerns and overcame them. As I visited new places and met new people, I learned more about my tastes, and my personality became clearer.”

Chae Jong Hyeop shared, “I lived fiercely. I spent my high school years in South Africa, struggling with graduation, language barriers, racism, loneliness, and finding my path. I started going to the gym and gained confidence through exercise. That’s when I began modeling locally.”

“My foreign friends were taller and had better proportions than me, so I often failed auditions,” he continued. “In the end, I came to Korea. Now that I have become an actor, I feel like I’ve found what I wanted. I wonder if all of this is a coincidence.”

chae-jong-hyeop-kim-so-hyun-w-korea-8.jp

When asked what kind of person his character Hoo Young is, Chae Jong Hyeop said, “Hoo Young is smart, but he’s lacking in many ways. He doesn’t know how to express his emotions and has a clumsy side. Sometimes he seems dry, harsh, or cynical. But as he meets the loving Hong Joo, he gradually falls deeper and deeper for her, and the walls around his heart begin to break down.”

Kim So Hyun described her character Hong Joo by saying, “Hong Joo has a lot of love to give. She loves deeply and gets hurt easily. Since she’s alone without any family, she fears being left alone if someone leaves her. There is a pure and quirky side to her. So when Hoo Young runs into her again after 10 years, he sees that she has remained the same as she was in school, to the point where he asks, ‘How can you still be exactly the same?’”

Spoiler

chae-jong-hyeop-kim-so-hyun-w-korea-1.pn

As we age, love often takes a backseat to other priorities. Questions about timing and busy schedules are likely to arise as the drama unfolds. When asked about the best time to love, Kim So Hyun replied, “When you are ready to love yourself? Isn’t that the only way you can truly love others? If you meet someone when your self-esteem is low, it will be a difficult relationship.”

Chae Jong Hyeop responded, “When I can embrace someone, and when I can lean on someone without collapsing. Actually, it’s the same thing. It should be a mutually beneficial relationship, not a struggle or a battle.”

Spoiler

chae-jong-hyeop-kim-so-hyun-w-korea-3.jp

Regarding what the drama aims to convey, Chae Jong Hyeop said, “The thing about fate is that you never know when it will come, and a coincidence can be the beginning of something.”

Kim So Hyun added, “That’s why you should make choices without regrets. Life is full of moments of choice, and no matter what decision you make, there is no right answer. ‘Serendipity’s Embrace’ will be more interesting to watch if you consider the characters’ choices and ask yourself, ‘What choice would I make in that situation?’ Like watching [the dating show] ‘I Am Solo.'”

Spoiler

chae-jong-hyeop-kim-so-hyun-w-korea-7.jp

As for their impressions of one another, Chae Jong Hyeop said, “Some people might expect So Hyun to be a somewhat cold person, but that’s not true at all. She is a very warm, cheerful, and positive friend.”

Kim So Hyun added, “Jong Hyeop always has a smiling face, whether in pictorials or on social media. But there’s a calmer and more serious side to him than you might think. Even on the set, he needs alone time, so he can sometimes be seen listening to music by himself.”

Serendipity’s Embrace: Episodes 1-2

by Unit

SE1-2-00028.jpg

Move along, runners and mobsters, a new sheriff has arrived at the loser-in-love town! Serendipity has come to embrace us with a story of first loves, friendships, fun, and frozen food analogies. And if you’re a fan of any of these themes, you’re welcome to dive right in.

EPISODES 1-2

Our story opens with the arrival of its leading man, KANG HOO-YOUNG (Chae Jong-hyeop), in Korea after ten long years abroad. This is not a permanent move, as he’s on a working visit to the Korean branch of the company he works for. Unlike you’d expect from a recent returnee, Hoo-young is not chomping at the bit to reconnect with friends and acquaintances from his past. But he does make time to honor a friend’s blind date arrangement, and this is where he makes his first reconnection with his past.

At the blind date, Hoo-young meets our heroine, LEE HONG-JOO (Kim So-hyun), and he instantly recognizes her from their high school days. But Hong-joo doesn’t seem to recognize him, and she’s here for a blind date of her own. This encounter gives us a sense that Hoo-young has a lingering attachment to whatever past he had with Hong-joo, but this is not the case with her. They run into each other again — or rather, he intentionally approaches her at a food stall — and while she admits she recognized him, her indifference still shines through. I mean, one would expect a yes or no answer to an “Aren’t you happy to see me?” question, but Hong-joo goes for option 😄 spit out her drink in surprise. And it’s fishcake broth to boot! Lol.

To help us understand why Hoo-young and Hong-joo have different reactions to meeting each other again, the drama takes us back ten years to their high school days. Hoo-young was the top student, liked by teachers, handsome, every girl’s dream and all of that golden boy stuff. But Hong-joo, our little Oddball, was the opposite. She’d rather immerse herself in the pages of novels than her textbooks, and attending classes was more of a suggestion than a compulsion for her.

Hoo-young and Hong-joo’s meet-cute involved him reluctantly waking her up on the bus when they arrived at the stop for school, and him refusing to be used as an excuse for her late arrival. With his golden boy ticket and his leg in a cast, Hoo-young gets a pass, but Hong-joo gets punished for coming late. This is where her one-sided beef with him begins. Hong-joo is forced to put her beef aside and play matchmaker when her best friend, KIM HYE-JI (Dasom), announces that she has a crush on Hoo-young. But Hong-joo’s attempts to make him notice Hye-ji only serves to make him notice her. Thus, Hong-joo bursts into Hoo-young’s boring life like a ray of sunshine, and years later that sun has still not set.

In the present, Hoo-young waits on pins and needles for Hong-joo to contact him because she took his phone number at the food stall. But Hong-joo is still captain of the Hoo-young x Hye-ji ship, and she gives Hye-ji the phone number instead. Hoo-young is disappointed, but he cheers up when Hye-ji invites him for a welcome party because Hong-joo will be in attendance.

At the welcome party, we meet another of their high school friends, KWON SANG-PIL (Lee Won-jung), who runs the restaurant the party is held at — and it’s not a “party” in the real sense, it’s just Hye-ji, Sang-pil, and Hoo-young in attendance. Sang-pil and Hye-ji are happy to see Hoo-young again, but you can feel the ten-year distance on Hoo-young’s part. He doesn’t even recognize Hye-ji at first sight because she’s no longer the nerdy girl he used to know. Lol. Hoo-young is here for one reason: to see Hong-joo. But Hong-joo is running late due to a work errand, and it is on this errand that she runs into BANG JOON-HO (Yoon Ji-on), a famous writer. Hong-joo has been a Joon-ho fan since high school, but now there’s a tense vibe between them. And as we’ll come to learn, Joon-ho was Hong-joo’s first love and ex-boyfriend who ditched her three years ago before leaving for abroad.

Hong-joo arrives at the welcome party totally drunk, and by this time, her fellow lightweight, Hye-ji, is also drunk. Coincidentally, Hoo-young and Hong-joo live in the same area, and Sang-pil hands Hoo-young the responsibility of getting her home safe. Before they part ways, Sang-pil tells Hoo-young not to leave town without saying goodbye like he did all those years ago. And now I’m curious about this non-goodbye story.

Chae Jong Hyeop Experiences Uncomfortable Meal With Kim So Hyun And Dasom In

Chae Jong Hyeop Experiences Uncomfortable Meal With Kim So Hyun And Dasom In "Serendipity's Embrace"

tvN’s “Serendipity’s Embrace” has released exciting previews ahead of tonight’s new episode!

Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, “Serendipity’s Embrace” tells the story of young people finding true love and fulfilling their dreams after accidentally running into their first love from 10 years ago.

The newly released stills capture Lee Hong Joo, who cannot even imagine that she is Kang Hoo Young’s first love, arranging a meeting to help advance the relationship between Kang Hoo Young and her best friend Kim Hye Ji (Dasom). Despite Lee Hong Joo’s efforts, Kang Hoo Young’s discomfort is evidently shown through his facial expression. What follows is an intense staredown, while Kim Hye Ji appears to be anxious as she senses the unusual tension between the two.

In another set of stills, Kang Hoo Young’s facial expression turns serious after receiving an urgent call from Kim Hye Ji. Kang Hoo Young, who rushes to the hospital where Lee Hong Joo is, looks down at her with tender eyes as he holds her hand. Viewers are left eager to find out what will happen to Lee Hong Joo and whether Kang Hoo Young will be able to confess his feelings to her.
