Se-hee (Park Ji-yeon) and Ji-woo (Ha Jeong-woo) have been in relationship for two years. As Se-hee suspects her boyfriend's love, however, she becomes neurotically sensitive and wants to poke out the eyes of other women for just staring her boyfriend. As Ji-woo grows increasingly tired of Se-hee's neurotic responses, Se-hee disappears. Six-months later, an entirely differently looking Se-hee, after having undergone plastic surgery, approaches Ji-woo all over again but with another name, Sae-hee. But she comes to realize that the woman Ji-woo really loves is Se-hee. Ji-woo is shocked when he discovers who Sae-hee really is and he himself leaves her to look for his another self. And Sae-hee is left alone, trying to find Ji-woo.

What humans are scared of most is probably time that changes everything, like Sae-hee or Se-hee said. Se-hee undergoes plastic surgery to keep time at bay. A sentence written on the door of the cosmetic surgery clinic saying, 'Do you want live a whole new life?' Is really life changed when a body is changed?" However, a newer Sae-hee finds herself jealous of Se-hee as she realizes whom Ji-woo is really in love with. In fact, it is not that Ji-woo didn't love Se-hee any more but it is that as we all experience he was going though the usual cycle of love, losing passion and flutters and physical interest.

In the ending part of the movie, Sae-hee goes under the plastic surgeon's knife again, regaining her look and meeting her older self. This is not the end of the movie. Same places such as Sculpture Park in an island, where Ji-woo and Se-hee or Sae-hee have met continue to be seen in the movie. This is the unique feature of Kim, the endless repeat of same places and times in which the two, or actually the three, become confusing.

S. Korea faces tough decision to pick its choice for foreign film Oscar

SEOUL, Sept. 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's movie agency on Tuesday faced a tough decision to pick its contender for next year's foreign film Oscar, with three movies vying for the status with an equally distinctive aura.

Two of them are box office record holders -- "The King and the Clown" by Lee Joon-ik and "The Host" by Bong Joon-ho. "Time" by Kim Ki-duk, the low-budget, less popular movie, was backed by the director's overseas recognition.

With no history of the Academy nominating a Korean movie, local experts are upbeat that chances are higher than ever this time with the renaissance of home-grown movies.

"We used to invite five jurors to make the decision and this year we have seven, because we decided each work has a good quality to compete in the Oscar race," said Tae Eun-jung, an official of the Korean Film Council that will make the submission to the U.S. Academy's Foreign Language Film Award Committee.

An Academy award or merely its nomination will provide a powerful backdrop for the movie to reach the huge U.S. market, she said.

The main criteria include the quality of the film, the possibility of its commercial success in the United States and the marketing ability of its distributor. The seven jurors, who are directors, producers, critics, journalists and scholars, will announce their pick this week, the council said.

"The King and the Clown" is a period drama revolving around two low-class clowns and the real-life merciless King Yeonsan in the late 15th century. Its lower-class humor, brilliant depiction of Korea's traditional tight-rope walking and the deftly-woven plot broke the local viewer record of 12.3 million in March.

While the clown story delivers traditional Korea, "The Host" received critical acclaim at home and abroad with its tasty mix of political satire, humanity and gender-bending story telling. With the story of a family fighting a monster of the Han River, the movie is now screened in Japan, Hong Kong and France and is eyeing the U.S. market.

The low-budget movie "Time" is referred to as Kim's most friendly work, which toned down his uncomfortable depiction of brutal reality. The director, who is popular abroad and controversial at home, tells the story of a woman who makes the extreme decision of plastic surgery to keep her bored lover.

'The King and the Clown' picked as Korean contender for foreign film Oscar

SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korea selected "The King and the Clown," a period drama by Lee Joon-ik, as its contender for next year's foreign film Oscar, hoping it will bring the country's first Academy award home.

The 16th-century tale beat its contemporary rivals, "The Host" by Bong Joon-ho and "Time" by Kim Ki-duk, with its better potential to appeal to a U.S. audience, the Korean Film Council said.

"The three contenders had all their own unique qualities that will have each of them stand at the front row of Korean movies, and it was the juries' consensus that comparing them by their quality was impossible," the council said in a press release.

The clown movie was a surprise box office hit in the country, having cost just 6 billion won (US$6 million) and starring no big names for the quirky historic tale. It revolves around two clowns and the real-life merciless King Yeonsan whose psychologoical instability led to the arbitrary killings of critics at the court in the early 16th century. Its humor of the lower-class, brilliant depiction of Korea's traditional tight-rope walking and the deftly-woven plot broke the local viewer record of 12.3 million in March.

The movie has tough language and cultural barriers to break through to reach foreign audiences, but its revival of medieval lives in Korea and artistry are ample enough to appeal, the council said.

"Ultimately, the juries decided 'The King and the Clown' would have the best potential, with its depth of historical, traditional and Asian emotions, if translations are well-done," Tae Eun-jung, a council official who coordinated the selection, said.

The low-budget movie "Time," a unique story of a woman who decides to have plastic surgery to keep her bored lover, shines with the director's originality but raised doubts among the juries that its distinctiveness could not fit in an Academy that values popularity. Also, "The Host" is praised for its deft plot, clever satire and visual effects, but the monster movie could be seen as a B movie from the view of the U.S. audience, it said.

With no history of the Academy nominating a Korean movie, local experts are upbeat that chances are higher than ever this time with the renaissance of home-grown movies.

The film council will make the submission to the U.S. Academy's Foreign Language Film Award Committee by Oct. 13, which will announce the winner on Jan. 23 before the award ceremony to be held in February.

I've read some mixed review about this movie. As with any other KKD movie, people's reception are always extreme. They either loathe them or worship them. I have watched almost all KKD's film, except Crocodile and Birdcage and I have to say that his movie does not appeal to the masses.

One needs to have a really open mind where everything is possible to really appreciate his movie. If you go in with a pre ser convention, they you might as well spend your money on Hollywood blockbusters.

I am eagerly awaiting for the DVD to be out, hopefully, complete with KKD's commentary. I always learn something new listening to his comments and anectodes.

I have been searching high and low for Crocodile and would really love to see a comparison between his earlier works and now. Many actually commented that KKD stayed true to his form, sort of not going too far from creating masterpieces of film noir. Most of his works exemplifis the society we live in but unfortunately, he took it a step further and ppl start accusing him of washing dirtly linens in public.

Most of his films do better abroad than in Korea. I saw Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall and Spring and I really enjoyed it. I also saw Address Unknown and didn't like it that much. I just hope he will ignore other peoples opinion and do what he loves to do.

I was thinking the same thing. I didn't quite get it. Is it saying that history repeats itself? It was meant to be? Stuck in time? It was an interesting movie though. Sad and a little creepy sometimes. I guess love can be that strong.
