K.Swiss Company Apologizes After Park Bo Gum’s CF Controversy

 

Sports brand K.Swiss China has apologized following the controversy over Park Bo Gum’s commercial.

According to a statement made by the company on August 10, they explained that the dance scene was taken from the drama “Reply 1988” and had nothing to do with any political situation. They stated that their only intention had been to recreate the baduk competition scene with a Chinese competitor in the drama.

“We apologize for any discomfort or misunderstanding and will work harder to respect public opinion in future,” they concluded.

The commercial in question featured a baduk competition between Park Bo Gum and a character labeled ‘Great Wall of China.’ In a subsequent dance competition, the ‘Great Wall of China’ character was given a comical role and was slapped by a female dancer as part of the choreography.

Meanwhile, some of Park Bo Gum’s Chinese fans have expressed their dissatisfaction with the company’s apology, as it takes no responsibility for the damage that Park Bo Gum might have incurred due to the issue.

Clarification made by @st4rdust regarding Soompi's translation of article:

I am glad that Kswiss finally had a statement issued but for those who understands mandarin but has no access to weibo, here is the actual statement.

Please Soompi, do a better job at translating. You are giving people an wrong report of what was being said.

"They stated that their only intention had been to recreate the baduk competition scene with a Chinese competitor in the drama."

In nowhere in their official statement did Kswiss ever mention that a Chinese player was used to represent the opponent. And if you did some research or following up, you may have read that to Koreans - "the great wall" also means a goal that is difficult to achieve. There was no nationality involved.

A search in Naver for 만리장성 ( Great wall ) provided some alternate meanings to the China monument itself.
