*** On April 18th, Park Bogum departed for Belgium to attend the KBS2 'Music Bank' World Tour as an MC and held a live stream during his flight. During the live session, he expressed concern about people illegally obtaining his flight details to meet him at the airport. He then stated, "Once my official schedule is confirmed, I will announce it on the fan cafe or I'll reply to you in the comments if you write to me. Please promise me you won't pay for flight information. Never do that."   :heart3:

How accurate are historical K-dramas? Separating fiction from history in 5 hit shows

Historical dramas, whether on the silver screen or television, maintain enduring popularity.

Enthusiasts of period pieces, both domestically and internationally, relish the opportunity to be transported to bygone eras and immerse themselves in the grand narratives that shaped our ancestors' lives.

While some seek continuity with the past, others crave narratives of progress. For foreign Korea enthusiasts, such dramas may offer a crash course in Korean history, yet it's important to recognize that all historical dramas take liberties — weaving in fictional characters, love stories and often conflated or invented events to sustain viewer engagement.

In our feature series, "Fiction vs. History," which has been running since 2018, the Korea JoongAng Daily endeavors to untangle the web of fiction and fact within popular period dramas and films.

By shedding light on the discrepancies between reality and dramatized portrayals, the aim is to provide clarity and dispel any potential misunderstandings among audiences.

Here are how five historical K-dramas fared in terms of accuracy.

The 2016 Korean epic drama series “Love in the Moonlight” tells the story of Crown Prince Hyomyeong (1809-1930), one of the 27 kings of Korea’s Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

Heartthrob actor Park Bo-gum played the lead role as the crown prince. Even though the story revolves around real characters, it’s so focused on the romance between the prince and his political eunuch, who is really a young woman posing as a man (played by Kim Yoo-jung), many people recognized that the story is fiction and not based on a real story. Still, it’s difficult to say that the drama is entirely fiction as some parts do depict real historical figures and events.

The drama is set during the reign of the Yi clan’s King Sunjo. But in reality, his maternal relatives — from the Andong Kim clan — had all the political power and ruled the country. Therefore, the king was powerless and the government deteriorated, filled with disorder and corruption.

The girl with whom Crown Prince Hyomyeong inevitably falls in love in the show is Hong Ra-on, who disguises herself as a man and ends up working as the prince’s political eunuch in the palace. The drama describes her as the daughter of Hong Gyeong-nae, who started the 1811 revolt. But her character was made up.

The drama also portrays the prince as a great leader, respected by his servants and the people. However, the awkward relationship he has with his father in the drama seems to be largely fictionalized to dramatize the story, as there are no historical records that imply the father and son were not on good terms.

The drama features the real historical figure Dasan Jeong Yak-yong, one of the greatest thinkers of the Joseon Dynasty. In the drama, Prince Hyomyeong often visits him to seek advice. There are no historical records to prove this, but records do say Dasan was a close confidant of King Jeongjo, Hyomyeong’s grandfather. Despite his relationship, he was ousted from the royal court during the first year of King Sunjo’s reign. Toward the end of the drama, Hyomyeong is nearly poisoned to death and Dasan visits the palace to give him some medicine. According to historical records, Dasan did bring Crown Prince Hyomyeong medicine toward the end of his life.

*** Not that I'm complaining about Bogum's upcoming hosting in Baeksang again, as I'm  pleased to see him once again in this award show of course.  However, the recurrence of the same hosts at the same award shows is not an uncommon practice. I just feel that this has become a trend of repeated hosting partnerships. Somehow I also welcome a fresh hosting lineup. Repeatedly featuring the same lineup of hosts at award ceremonies can quickly become monotonous. In general, it is also very hard for new faces to get a chance. I guess they copy it from other countries, for instance, the Oscars. If this is the case, at least they should switch up even if every 2 years. Well, well-known host brings in viewers just like the case of Park Bogum, though! This is just my opinion -   :kisslevel:

*** Soon........ it's the time of Park Bogum to make his grand return on the Netflix produced K-movie "Wonderland".  I can't tell much from the 1st teaser since they're all holding their mobile phones, so it looks like a mobile phone ad. - hahaha - Actually, the first time I saw the video, I thought it was a new CF of Bogum. It doesn't seem very grabbing for a movie teaser. Well, I'm here for Park Bogum and Choi Woo Shik waiting for this movie. I hope it would be an interesting story because this movie has been delayed for years since its intended release. Missing Bogum so much on the screen. I'm rooting for his success with the lining-up comeback projects he will have.   :happydance:

Star-studded film 'Wonderland' to premiere in June

By Lee Gyu-lee

The much-anticipated film “Wonderland” is finally getting its premiere in June after a long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The film’s distributor, Acemaker Movieworks, announced that it will hit local theaters on June 5, unveiling a trailer and still photos of the cast members.

The sci-fi drama film revolves around a virtual platform service called Wonderland, which creates a virtual version of a deceased person through artificial intelligence. The story follows a group of people using the service to reunite with their late loved ones and communicate with them through video calls.

Led by director Kim Tae-yong, whose previous work includes romance films "All for Love" (2005) and "Late Autumn" (2010), the film created a huge buzz with its stellar cast members, including Bae Suzy, Park Bo-gum, Tang Wei, Choi Woo-shik, Jung Yu-mi and Gong Yoo.

Bae and Park will play a young couple who use the service when Park’s character falls into a coma. Tang and Gong will play a married couple in their 40s and Jung and Choi will play the coordinators of the service.

The movie finished filming four years ago in 2020 and was scheduled to roll out the following year, but was indefinitely delayed for release due to the pandemic and its aftereffects on theaters.

Tang and Park shared a glimpse of the film during the ceremony of the Blue Dragon Film Awards last November, while presenting an award.

“What I'm looking forward to in 'Wonderland' is the love story between Bae and Park," Tang said. "I think Park will gain even more female fans after the movie is released."

Park also added: “’Wonderland’ is at last ready to meet the audience. It's a film that makes you contemplate precious values."
