Netflix's 'Gyeongseong Creature': tale of 'sad' monster born from greed

SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Yonhap) -- Netflix's original Korean TV series can't get enough of monstrous creatures. Hot on the heels of the monster apocalypse "Sweet Home 2," which premiered less than three weeks ago, another highly anticipated monster thriller, "Gyeongseong Creature," awaits its global release.

Director Jeong Dong-yun of the latter title said there is a stark difference between the creatures in "Sweet Home" and the upcoming series in that the overriding sentiment of the monstrous being in "Geyongseong Creature" is sadness.

"The series' main mood is sadness," Jeong said during a press event on Tuesday ahead of the global release later this week. "Its creature is neither powerful nor cool."

"I emphasized this point throughout production and tried to make sure a sense of sadness permeates the creature's behavior and expressions."

The producer added he and the writer meticulously crafted a backstory for the original creature, tracing its roots back to parasites.

"The audience will be able to get a glimpse of the origin from the intro of the series," he said.

One of Netflix's most-anticipated Korean language originals of the year, "Gyeongseong Creature" follows two young protagonists, Jang Tae-sang (Park Seo-joon) and Yun Chae-ok (Han So-hee), who team up to investigate the mysterious surroundings of missing people cases and fight against what they uncover.

The rich, greedy and well-connected owner of the Golden Treasure Pawnshop in Gyeongeong, the Japanese-era name for Seoul, Jang increasingly finds himself reevaluating his values, after getting involved with Yun, a bounty hunter who makes a living by tracking down missing people, including her own mother.

While investigating the cases, the pair is put in a situation where they have to fight for their survival and solve a mystery at the deadly Ongseong Hospital with dark secrets lurking in its basement.

Set in 1945, the series is a mix of different genres, ranging from a period piece and monsters to romance and action, said actor Park, who has starred in films that include "The Marvel" and "Concrete Utopia," as well as TV series like

"Itaewon Class" and "What's Wrong with Secretary Kim?"

"Jang went through a lot while growing up to eventually become the owner of the pawnshop. One day he becomes embroiled in a certain case, and the story begins to unfold," Park said.

The actor said he put a lot of effort into fleshing out his character in a way that shows his life through his looks, attire and attitude.

"I loved the outcome. I am sure the series will offer the audience a lot to enjoy," the actor said, adding that all the action sequences and special effects were constructed as intended.

Han said she was attracted to the series mostly because of its historical setting and background.

"Honestly, I was worried a lot in the beginning, as I am quite different from the character, Chae-ok. She is much more relaxed than I am," she said, laughing. "Chae-ok has a clear mission, which is to find her mother. I played the character, focusing on the goal."

Netflix will unveil the first seven episodes of the 10-part series Friday. The rest will be available Jan. 5.

*** During the press conference of Netflix’s original series Gyeongseong Creature”, Park Seo-joon revealed that he filmed a torture scene during his first shoot saying, “I remember it as a cold day. I kept getting splashed with water, and my whole body got wet. I suffered a lot from the very beginning, almost as if it was a ritual. As the beginning of this drama was like this, I had expectations of how intense it would be until the end. The key is always moderation. There’s an emotional line, and as an actor, I think I need to express it so that it feels convincing. There are atmospheres and emotions that situations give, so when I look at Chae-ok (Han So-hee), that feeling can be created.”

“Gyeongseong Creature” Part 1 will be released on Dec 22nd, and Part 2 will be released on Jan 5th, 2024.

Park Seo-joon, Han So-hee drawn to period monster genre of ‘Gyeongseong Creature’

20231219000564_0.jpg

South Korean acting all-stars Park Seo-joon and Han So-hee were drawn in by the unique background and genre of “Gyeongseong Creature" in joining Netflix's upcoming creature feature series, the duo said Tuesday.

Directed by Jung Dong-yoon of the hit baseball drama “Stove League” (2019) and written by Kang Eun-kyung of the “Dr. Romantic” series, “Gyeongseong Creature” revolves around a young man and woman in Gyeongseong, today's Seoul, in the spring of 1945 who discover the secret of Ongseong Hospital.

“I had an expectation coming from the title itself. It is a combination of a period drama and a creature genre, but at the same time, it doesn't miss out on the intimate story of a young man and a woman. It’s a complex genre project,” Park told reporters during a press conference held in Yongsan, Seoul, Tuesday.

Park said he also wanted to challenge himself to show a different style of acting through Tae-sang, his character.

Tae-sang is the head of marketplace Golden Jade House, and is the wealthiest and the most well-connected person in Gyeongseong. He is someone who puts money before justice. That is until he meets Chae-ok (Han So-hee) and everything changes.

“Besides focusing on showing good acting, I also put a special focus on the overall look because that decides the series’ first impression,” Park said.

Han So-hee, who starred in the 2021 Netflix hit “My Name,” said she was attracted to the period drama setting of Gyeongseong in 1945.

“I thought about what this creature genre series can give me (in terms of my acting career) and I was attracted to this genre,” Han told reporters.

Her character, Chae-ok, is a famous bounty hunter who tracks down missing people, one of whom is her mother. She coincidentally encounters Tae-sang in Gyeongseong.

Han said Chae-ok’s calmness and agile survival skills gained from her childhood spent roaming across Manchuria and Shanghai with her father in search of her mother have little in common with her.

“I’m not a relaxed person. So I worried (about acting the role of Chae-ok) but I tried to remind myself that Chae-ok has a clear purpose in her life and is less influenced by her surroundings, whereas Tae-sang is a character who is swayed by the surroundings as well as the background -- he is a well-off man,” said Han.

Others in the cast include Claudia Kim who plays Maeda, the wife of a powerful official in Gyeongseong during the Japanese colonial period. “Squid Game” star Wi Ha-jun plays Jun-taek, Tae-sang's best friend.

The first seven episodes, which fall under part 1, will be unveiled on Dec. 22 on Netflix. The last three episodes, which fall under part 2, will be released on Jan. 5.

‘Gyeongseong Creature’ a ‘genre mash-up, visual feast,’ says Park Seo-jun

gcreature.jpg

MANILA — For South Korean actor Park Seo-jun, the much-awaited series “Gyeongseong Creature” offers an intriguing story that brings together different genres and a visual treat that audiences can enjoy.

Set in 1945 during Japan’s colonization of South Korea, the 10-episode show follows a wealthy pawnshop owner and sleuth who infiltrate a hospital in Gyeongseong (a former name of the capital Seoul) and confront a creature “born from human greed.”

During an online press conference held Tuesday, Park highlighted how the show brings together the creature (monster) and historical drama genres.

“It’s a creature genre but it’s also about two young people who are living in a turbulent era. So I think that it’s a very complex mash-up of different genres and it’s going to be a visual feast for you,” Park said through an interpreter.

In the series, Park plays Jang Tae-sang, the wealthy owner of the House of Golden Treasure pawnshop. He becomes entangled in the mystery surrounding Ongseong Hospital after meeting Yoon Chae-ok (played by Han So-hee), a specialist in finding missing people.

Explaining how the show came about, director Jung Dong-yoon said he wanted a story set in the colonial period and added the monster element to attract international audiences.

“When I talked to writer Kang [Eun-kyung] about the show, I said that I wanted to talk about this era, the Gyeongseong era, I’m very intrigued with this era. And when I was talking with her, I said, ‘Let's make this into a story that's not just about us but a story where people around the world can all enjoy,’” he recounted.

“If it’s a creature genre, I can talk about our history but also creatures, which can be more intriguing to a lot of global fans. So that’s why I wanted to mash up the two genres together. This is my first time trying to mash up two different genres so this is a challenge for myself too,” said Jung, who previously directed the acclaimed series “Hot Stove League.”

Park said it was a “no-brainer” for him to accept the project, considering the story, director, writer and his fellow cast members.

“When I was in ‘Itaewon Class,’ director Jung’s work was also airing, ‘Hot Stove League,’ so I wanted to meet with him.

And we have So-hee playing Chae-ok in the show so it’s just a no-brainer for me because it’s just going to be really fun,” Park said.

Similarly, Han said she accepted the project for the opportunity to work with Jung and Park. “I [also] thought a creature genre will be of immense help for me as an actress going forward,” she said.

Han shared that she also sustained an injury while filming action scenes for the show.

“When you’re on set and you begin shooting the scenes, everyone goes at it 100 percent but one thing I felt that I didn’t think of prior was discerning what I’m capable of and what I’m not able to do,” said Han, who previously starred in the action-revenge series “My Name.”

“There's always emotional expressions along with the action too so sometimes trying to do both of those leads to minor injuries, but don’t worry about me,” she said reassuringly.

Veteran actress Kim Hae-sook, who plays Tae-sang’s butler, praised the elaborate production design.

“When I first set foot in the House of Golden Treasure, I was really impressed... because I've been in a lot of period dramas but this one was different, I've never seen a set like this,” said Kim, whose other notable dramas include “Under the Queen's Umbrella” and “Strong Girl Nam-soon.”

“So when the shooting was over, I heard that they were going to take it down, I was really mad because I didn’t want it to be taken down… Every little prop in the scene was just perfect. It was jaw-dropping. It was just so grandiose and it really was like I was in 1945,” she said.

Director Jung said “Gyeongseong Creature” was challenging for him due to the visual effects. “It’s my first show with so much VFX (visual effects) work. I didn’t expect that I’d come across such a show but it was a good challenge for me and I wanted to pull it off well,” he said.

He added that the production team also wanted to create a monster “that’s never before seen,” even providing it with a detailed backstory.

“We thought of how it all begins with a parasite inside your body and how the creature is born, what process it goes through in order to become a creature, what kind of abilities it has and how it looks. All the history needs to be in place in order to persuade people... Our creature is one of a kind, it’s something that we created ourselves originally,” he said.

“Gyeongseong Creature” will release its first seven episodes on Netflix on December 22, while the final three parts are scheduled to drop on January 5, 2024.

*** Here are some things I learned about "Gyeongseong Creature" from the cast and director during their presscon :   :heart3:

Park Seo Joon said Tae Sang's character is the type of role where you can show different facets of yourself, and the narrative was very intriguing.

It was the Director's idea to create a show that focused on the 1940s.

Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee were very involved in creating their respective costumes. Although Tae Sang had a lot of outfit changes, Han So Hee's character Yoon Chae Ok only had a total of three.

To be prepared for amazing special effects, especially when it comes to the creature.

TODAY is D- DAY!  Part I of "Gyeongseong Creature" premieres on Friday, December 22, 2023. Part II will follow on Friday, January 5, 2024.     :kaching3:

Starring Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee, “Gyeongseong Creature” will tell the story of an entrepreneur and a sleuth who must fight for survival and face a monster born out of human greed.

On December 22, the drama released a special poster ahead of the premiere of Part 1. The poster hints at the romance to come between Jang Tae Sang (Park Seo Joon) and Yoon Chae Ok (Han So Hee). Describing their characters’ relationship, Park Seo Joon commented, “Tae Sang and Chae Ok are like enemies at the beginning, but as the misunderstandings between them are gradually resolved, they begin to feel kinship and compassion for one another, and their feelings begin to grow.”

Han So Hee similarly remarked, “When she first meets Tae Sang, [Chae Ok] is confused as to whether it’s safe to trust him, but she gradually starts to feel a kinship with him. I also hope that the script is interesting, and the direction can carry this whole thing from mere action play to genuinely well-crafted drama. We’ll find out soon as Part 1 has been dropped. Your welcome @willenette! :).

@backstreetboysfan  you know, I love Park Seo Joon's visual photos but, for couple photos, no. Han So Hee is beautiful but, they lack chemistry or is it just me? I feel that it seems like two strangers taking pictures together. I hope only for this photoshoot. The drama is also a romance genre but how come in the photos they don’t seem like a couple. They don’t look good together. Sorry if this is my reaction to the photoshoot. You see, usually photoshoot sets the tone of what to expect. :Please:
