SEOUL, Jan. 8 (Yonhap) -- Season 2 of Netflix's hit original Korean TV series "Gyeongseong Creature" will be released within this year, the global streaming giant said Monday.

 

Released in two parts last month and Friday, respectively, the first season of "Gyeongseong Creature" tells the chilling tale of Imperial Japan creating a monster through biological experiments against the backdrop of Gyeongseong in 1945, just before Korea's liberation from Japanese rule.

 

Park Seo-joon plays Jang Tae-sang, who infiltrates a hospital where biological experiments are being conducted in search of a missing Korean geisha. Han So-hee plays Yoon Chae-ok, who sneaks into the hospital together with Jang in search of her missing mother.

 

Following the release of the second part, the 10-episode series of the first season ranked third on Netflix's latest weekly ranking for non-English TV shows.

 

Season 2 will extend its narrative to Seoul in 2024, where a character called Ho-jae, which resembles Jang Tae-sang, and Yoon Chae-ok uncover enigmatic events and connections, according to Netflix.

 

"Season 2 presents a story with a completely different charm," director Chung Dong-yoon said of the new season in a release from the streamer. "The change in space and time period will provide a clear distinction, offering an expanded universe feel."

‘Gyeongseong Creature’ gains popularity to reach Netflix top 10 in Japan

 

The Netflix original series “Gyeongseong Creature” is gaining momentum following the release of Part 2 on Jan. 5, ranking No. 7 globally and No. 9 in Japan among Netflix TV series. It was initially anticipated as a follow-up to “The Glory,” but faced harsh criticism after the release of Part 1.

 

According to streaming analytics site FlixPatrol on Jan. 6, “Gyeongseong Creature” climbed to seventh place in the Netflix TV series worldwide, securing the top spot in South Korea, Vietnam, and Taiwan. It reached No. 2 in Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Hong Kong.

 

While Part 1 received some negative reviews, such as “falling short of expectations,” “overflowing clichés,” and “predictable,” positive reactions have become more prominent after the release of Part 2, with many viewers expressing that they found it enjoyable.

 

Notably, “Gyeongseong Creature” has caught attention by securing the ninth spot in Japan. The series revolves around two youths encountering unidentified monstrous beings while investigating a woman’s disappearance in 1945 in Gyeongseong. It features the issue of the Imperial Japanese Army’s “comfort women” and also the narrative of Unit 731, which conducted human experiments in the name of preparing for bacterial warfare.

 

“‘Gyeongseong Creature’ is causing considerable reactions among Japanese netizens,” said Seo Kyoung-duk, a professor at Sungshin Women’s University, on his social media account. Seo shared comments from Japanese viewers about the series such as “I learned about Unit 731 for the first time,” “It was a chance to know about Unit 731,” and “I realized Unit 731 was real,” saying, “It is significant that ‘Gyeongseong Creature’ has effectively conveyed historical facts like Unit 731 and biological experiments, which were rarely covered in Japanese education, to Japanese netizens.”

I wonder why. Even the one-minute long kissing scene between Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee was also criticized. Why? Nothing's wrong with this, it's good.

@backstreetboysfan  so, Netflix split the airing of this drama into a 2-week break but, it was still the same season and series, not a S1 & S2 situation. "Gyeongseong Creature" got mixed critic and audience reviews and doesn't seem to have any online buzz. Part 2 was released this weekend and with it the drama ends kinda quietly. Since I don't really dig multiple seasons, S1 was all I needed.

Netflix has unveiled playful and friendly behind-the-scenes stills of the “Gyeongseong Creature” cast members!

 

Set in the dark times of Spring 1945, “Gyeongseong Creature” tells the story of an entrepreneur and a sleuth who must fight for survival and face a monster born out of human greed.

 

Unlike the atmosphere of the drama where characters had to fight for their survival, the newly released behind-the-scenes stills capture the cheerful and lively atmosphere of actors on site.

 

First, Park Seo Joon strikes a confident yet easygoing pose as the owner of the pawn shop Geumokdang in the drama.

 

 

On the other hand, Han So Hee makes a playful facial expression, which contrasts with her character Chae Ok, who is strong and somewhat cold.

 

 

Claudia Kim, who plays Maeda Yukiko, a character full of secrets, showcases her unexpected charm with a bright smile behind the scenes.

Director Jung Dong Yoon and writer Kang Eun Kyung shared their insights into the love story between Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee in their recent work, Gyeongseong Creature.

Regarding the romance between Tae Sang (played by Park Seo Joon) and Chae Ok (Han So Hee), writer Kang Eun Kyung noted, “There aren’t many romantic scenes in the show. The characters find themselves in challenging situations. Despite having distinct lifestyles and goals, the two attractive individuals may be drawn to each other due to a shared instinct for survival.”

Director Jung Dong Yoon provided further context, stating, “I thought a lot about the perspective from which I should view their romance. I think they grew closer, perhaps due to the trust they built during difficult times.”

“The initial meeting between Tae Sang and Chae Ok wasn’t an instant romantic connection, but rather something that looked aesthetically pleasing on screen. In episodes 3 and 4, Chae Ok seeks Tae Sang’s help, and together they successfully escape from Ongseong Hospital. Their relationship develops not through immediate attraction but through genuine conversations in their room after their daring escape,” he continued. “Their love story doesn’t stop there as Season 1 ends with Tae Sang mistakenly thinking Chae Ok is dead, while Chae Ok opens her eyes. think the melodrama that unfolds after this might happen in Season 2. I hope viewers will watch out for that part.”

He also commented, “While Season 1 delves into themes of human nature and greed, the upcoming season shifts its focus to the reunion of Tae Sang and Chae Ok in the post-colonial era,” raising anticipation for Season 2.

In Netflix's announcement of "Gyeongseong Creature" season 2, the release date has not been mentioned, but it is coming soon. Filming for the second season has reportedly already ended, and the sequel is slated for release in 2024. I'm looking forward to season 2. Some viewers observed that the relationship between 'Jang Tae-sang' and 'Yoon Chae-ok' progresses rather quickly after he instantly falls for her upon their first meeting. When asked what he thinks about those opinions, Park Seo Joon said, "I don't think the dynamics of love would have been the same in the past when things were tough. Lovers back then might not have had lively conversations or spent as much time together as they do now. I didn't really question how the two characters developed their relationship because I think people can fall in love with someone after a fleeting glance or a single word spoken. It made sense to me." Then he went on to talk about Han So-hee, "She always came fully prepared and with great enthusiasm. Watching her made me think I should work harder. Each action scene took a lot of time to film. As we approach the end of filming, it becomes a test of stamina. So, Han So-hee and I always tried to liven up the site to keep everyone's energy up. We shared jokes to uplift one another's spirit. We didn't have any scenes together at the beginning of the filming process. We saw each other on the set only a few times back then. At one point, we couldn't come across at the filming site for over a month because we didn't have a scene together. So I looked forward to shooting a scene with her. When I partner with another actor, I try to go along with their energy as much as possible. Considering how talented an actress she is, I knew that Han So-hee and I would create amazing chemistry on the screen just by exchanging good reactions. Working with Han So-hee on the site, I noticed how bright her energy is and how she naturally led the atmosphere. Plus, she treats her sunbaes well.
