'Miracle in Cell No. 7' exceeds 10 million mark in attendance
YonhapNews
SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korean comedy movie "Miracle in Cell No. 7" surpassed the 10 million mark in audience on Saturday, the film's distributor said.
Directed by Lee Hwan-Kyung, the film is about a group of inmates in cell No. 7 who embark on a mission to help a new inmate -- a mentally disabled man with a mind of a six-year-old child -- be with his seven-year-old daughter who he is single-handedly raising.
The film reached 10,000,911 viewers as of 9.30 p.m. Saturday, according to the NEW. Only seven other local films have so far passed the barrier.
It also became the first Korean film to hit the milestone this year, just four months after the costume drama "Gwanghae: the Man Who Became the King" starring Korean heartthrob Lee Byung-hun had surpassed the mark.
Made with just 3.5 billion won (US$3.2 million), the small-budget movie raked in over 70 billion won in net profit, it said.
South Korea has a population of 50 million.

Bust-driven boom
Mega-hit 'Cell No. 7' confirms movies as king of escapist entertainment
By Kim Tong-hyung The Korea Times

The comedy "Miracle in Cell No. 7" became the latest Korean movie to hit the 10 million audience mark over the weekend, joining a precious list that includes "The Host,’’ "The Thieves’’ and "Gwanghae: the Man Who Became the King.’’ Whether it deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the others is up for debate.
The film reached 10,000,911 viewers as of 9:30 p.m. Saturday, according to its distributor NEW. It took 23 days for Cell No. 7 to reach the milestone, faster than last year’s mega-hit “Gwanghae,” which reached the mark after 38 days in mid-October.
“Cell No. 7” is the third Korean movie in just the past seven months to sell more than 10 million tickets. And there is a not-so-remote possibility that Ryu Seung-wan’s spy thriller "The Berlin Files,’’ which has been giving “Cell No. 7” stiff competition in the box office standings, will also soon join the 10 million viewer club.
The status of Bong Joon-ho’s “Host,” the highest grossing Korean film of all time after selling 13 million tickets in 2006, has never been more precarious.
The next big films in the pipeline this year are "Stoker,’’ the new film by Park Chan-wook, of "Old Boy’’ fame, and Bong’s sci-fi movie "Snowpiercer.’’
"The Korean film industry producing three 10 million-plus films over a seven-month span is truly an unbelievable development and something that no one could claim they saw coming. Big bang is the only way to describe this,’’ said movie critic Jeon Chan-il.
"The overall quality and level of entertainment provided by Korean films has undoubtedly improved, which now allows film creators to work with a much larger body of customers than before that are spread more broadly across age groups and income brackets.’’
The Korean film industry is coming off a record year in 2012 when it sold nearly 200 million tickets and the pace of growth has picked up further at the start of 2013.
The number of moviegoers measured at theaters across the nation reached 23.6 million in January, up by more than 22 percent year-on-year. Nearly 18 million tickets were sold through last week this month, already 5 million more than the 13 million for the whole month of February last year.
It could be argued that the popularity of movies has been accelerated by the bad economy. Consumers, reeling from stagnant incomes and higher living costs, are looking for cheaper ways to spend their leisure time and it’s difficult to beat spending 10,000 won for popcorn, soda and two hours of entertainment.
Among the list of Korean movies that drew more than 10 million, “Cell No. 7” is clearly the pound-for-pound king finance-wise. The movie cost 5.5 billion won to make, but has already raked in more than 70 billion won.
It could also be argued as the worst movie on the list, at least from a critic’s standpoint. It is a comedy but also an unapologetic tearjerker, the type of movie that ages badly and is resented by the time of reaching cable television.
The movie  ― directed by Lee Hwang-kyun and starring Chungmuro hotshot Ryu Seung-ryong ― is about a man with learning difficulties who raises a daughter alone. After he is wrongfully jailed for murder, his warmhearted cellmates take drastic measures to secretly bring in his daughter to live with them.

The film recently became the eighth Korean film of 2013 to join the 10 million club.

One official commented, "We believe Ryu Seung Ryong will be receiving a running guarantee that amounts to much more than what he was paid to appear in the movie. The Gift of Room 7 was Ryu Seung Ryong′s first film with a running guarantee. He never knew the film would gather more than 10 million, but the amount for his running guarantee has been climbing with the film′s success. We can′t say exactly how much he′ll be receiving because everything will be balanced when the film leaves theaters."

The break-even point for The Gift of Room 7 is at an audience of 1.7 million. For the remaining 8.3 million, Ryu Seung Ryong will be able to claim a certain share for each audience member. Even when set at a minimum of 10 won for each additional audience member, the running guarantee adds up to nearly a 100 million won.

The Gift of Room 7 cost a total of 5.8 billion won to produce yet managed to earn over 70 billion won. It is known to have the highest earnings rate out of the eight Korean films that surpassed 10 million.

A rep from the film′s PR company commented, "Everyone has agreed to keep the running guarantee portion of the contract a secret. We cannot disclose the exact terms or the exact amount."

Another rep from Ryu Seung Ryong′s agency also said, "The film is still in theaters, and many other actors also worked hard for it; we′re trying to be careful about the issues being concentrated only on Ryu Seung Ryong′s running guarantee."

By Moon Gwang-lip Korea JoongAng Daily

Ryu Seung-ryong has joined a small group of Korean actors who have starred in more than one film that surpassed 10 million in ticket sales.
His latest film, “A Gift from Room 7,” reached the milestone on Saturday, a month after its release on Jan. 23, according to the Korean Film Council. It is the eighth Korean film to do so.
“Gwanghae,” also starring Ryu, has become the third-most-watched film in the domestic industry since being released in September with ticket sales of 12.3 million. The other actors in the group include Seol Kyung-gu, who starred in “Silmido” and “Haeundae,” and Kim In-kwon of “Haeundae” and “Gwanghae.” Ryu is the first actor whose two films have reached the milestone consecutively. In “A Gift from Room 7,” Ryu played Yong-gu, a father with a developmental disability convicted for a crime he didn’t commit. He is held at prison cell No. 7 along with some of the country’s worst criminals.
In “Gwanghae,” he played Heo Kyun, a high-ranking official in the royal court.

HUNGMURO/FILM
Gift of Room 7 joins 10 million ticket club

by girlfriday | February 25, 2013 |

Room7_40.jpg

The Korean domestic box office has been booming lately, that’s for sure. And now we have another addition to the top ten all-time box office record-holders: heartwarming jailbird daddy-daughter comedy The Gift of Room 7 has surpassed the 10-million ticket mark and edged its way past D-war and Speed Scandal for eighth place. Is anyone else seeing a pattern with some of the box office winners of late? Gwanghae, The Man Who Became King (aka Masquerade), All About My Wife, and now Room 7… is there a thing that Ryu Seung-ryong does that doesn’t sell? I suppose if the man can market ramyun on sex appeal, the sky’s the limit, really.

This weekend’s numbers put Room 7′s total count at 10,386,784 moviegoers, and it joinsThieves, Host, King and Clown, Gwanghae, Taegeukgi, Haeundae, and Silmido in the (increasingly less) exclusive 10 mill club. Perhaps more impressive is the fact that it’s reportedly recouping nearly 20 times the cost of its production, which is a thing that the other big-budget blockbusters can’t boast so easily.

The family comedy from writer-director Lee Hwan-kyung (Champ) stars Ryu Seung-ryong as a convicted killer with the mind of a six-year old, who lands in prison along with a room full of hardened criminals. But when they see that he can’t live without his daughter, they hatch a plan to break the girl into prison. It’s so illogical it’s genius.

Room7_47.jpg

Champ was also a heart-tugging daddy-daughter movie (starring Cha Tae-hyun as a washed-up jockey), so clearly this is a theme near and dear to the director’s heart. Park Shin-hye plays the grown-up version of the daughter, who carries the more emotional latter part of the story, post-prison hijinks. Aw, the stills already make me want to cry.

And below is a spread for Bazaar featuring Room 7′s resident badasses: Ryu Seung-ryong, Kim Jung-tae, Park Won-sang, and Oh Dal-soo. It really takes very little to make them look the part, doesn’t it? But that’s probably more to do with their long filmographies as gangsters, loan sharks, and gangster-loan-sharks — your go-to bad guys of film and tv. Something tells me their combined powers of comedy are the winning ingredient here.

The Gift of Room 7 is racking up more tickets in theaters now.
