"A Thousand Days' Promise" Soo-ae and Kim Rae-won finally get married

Soo-ae and Kim Rae-won finally got married and became a couple.

On the SBS drama "A Thousand Days' Promise" on the 28th, Seo-yeon (Soo-ae) with Alzheimer's accepted her love Ji-hyeong's (Kim Rae-won) proposal and got married.

She tried pushing him away at first but she deiced to marry him. However, Ji-hyeong's parents weren't there. His father Chang-joo (Im Chae-moo) decided he didn't have a son anymore and was cold towards them. However, Ji-hyeong's mother Soo-jeong (Kim Hae-sook) accepted her son's request and sincerely wished for them to be happy as long as he chose this path. She knew that it was going to be hard for her son to marry a woman with Alzheimer's but she supported their happiness.

Both Seo-yeon and Ji-hyeong's parents weren't present at the wedding but they were blessed by their friends and people around them. They vowed to each other and reassured their love for each other. Seo-yeon wearing the beautiful off shoulder dress and Ji-hyeong looking at her with loving eyes and kissing her was the highlight of the scene.

However, there seemed to be hardship after all the happiness. The preview of the next episode showed Seo-yeon and Ji-hyeong fighting seriously and she was yelling at him that he was a nightmare.

The two got married after many ups and downs but it seems as though Alzheimer's was going to give them more tests.

Personally, I never translate these teaser fragments, partly because they've often been tricksily edited so that when you get the full context you realize they didn't mean what you thought at first. Which is why I don't pay much attention to them even in their original Korean.

But I think the pattern of what's going on in those snippets will emerge if you rewatch carefully SY and JH's set-to in the hotel parking lot around half way through ep 1. Over her wearing heels like those, I mean. At that time, of course, neither of them knew of her illness, but there's a psychological pattern there in which JH, out of concern for SY, gets furious with her for not looking after herself. She knows he means well, but she gets furious in return at being patronized as well as bawled at, and a row blows up. In one of those fragments after today's episode, she's yelling at him "I'm not a moron yet, you know". Ironically (and of course by quite deliberate intention of this brilliant scriptwriter) SY treats her younger brother in exactly the same way JH treats her, giving him an unnecessarily hard time because she cares for him so much and is terrified that without her constantly nagging and bullying him, he'll go to the bad. She's lightened up towards him now they've moved in to the new apartment, but there was a reminder today (again quite deliberate on the writer's part) where her brother jokingly warned SY not to drop back into "nagging-mommy-mode" with him.

In today recaps there a part where Seoyeon said: Jihyung was hers to begin with. I just don't understand how that be! Jihyung was always HyangGi's ... I can accept Jihyng has a change of heart but he was never hers in the first place right? What do you guys think?

If Moon Kwon moved in with them, what will happen to him when Seoyeon gone?

Now Seoyeon is quitting her job, what's she going to do with the time?

Maybe too many complaints about her expensive clothes now she wearing ordinary ones.

I've notice she always smiles brightly when she's with her cousin JaeMin. That's nice!

Rewatch the scene in the yard in ep 1 where JY walks in (noticeably carrying an expensive-looking up-market store-bought present for his hostess, not a batch of Granny's Home-Made Kimchi, as befits the son of a rich family visiting a family of much humbler status) while SY is bawling out her brother and trying to incinerate the manwha he's been reading instead of doing his schoolwork. That look SY and JH interchange is the 'coup de foudre' moment all Kdramas have to have, even ones as consistently original as this. She's had dibs on him since that day he came to dinner at the invitation of his school classmate JM. And that may even be the "day" he refers to in the very first dialogue, rather than the more obvious reference to their re-encounter years later in the art gallery, which led to their to their physical liaison. It's also what SY is referring to when she says she's had a crush on him since her teenage years.

If Moon Kwon moved in with them, what will happen to him when Seoyeon gone?

The fact that it's taken as read that MK will join their household also goes back to that first meeting in the context of SY's adoptive family. It also ties in with the full details of the predicament from which the kids were rescued, which only JM, his parents, and JH know about, the latter because JM told him about it when they were in College, after JH asked him about SY, revealing his ongoing interest in her even back then. (JM's normally taciturn father once revealed to his son what happened, but his elder sister has never been told: she might have been a tad less nasty to her cousins if she had known what they were rescued from and hence understood why her mother felt she had to compensate SY and MK for what they'd missed out on from their own mother by giving them apparently preferential treatment). SY is hoping that in the immediate future MK will pass the entrance examination for that top company he's set his sights on (provided she's there to keep on nagging him to stick at his studies) then she can set about finding him a suitable wife, as is every married Noona's duty to her younger male siblings, before her illness takes its full toll. Once married, he'll move out.

Now Seoyeon is quitting her job, what's she going to do with the time?

Haven't had time to watch the raw yet, but on my first viewing of the stream yesterday, I didn't get the impression she was packing in her job just yet. She was finding pretexts for not getting into projects she might be unable to finish, giving her wish to concentrate on her own writing as an explanation, but if she was said to be quitting the publishing company altogether, then I must have missed that.

EDIT, No, I hadn't missed anything. She hadn't been intending to quit her job yet in that episode. But in the teasers for ep 15/16 at the end of ep 14 we got to see her handing her boss her letter of resignation and explaining that she had Alzeimer's. Presumably, the worsening of her symptoms since she stopped taking the medication has brought forward the time when she feels she can no longer do her job.

i just finished reading the recaps of the latest episodes..i have yet to watch them with subs but gaaaaaahhhhhh.. too many emotions in just one episode.. i don't know where to start! thanks baduy for sharing your insights about the drama.

HYANG GI - my heartaches so much for this girl.. why does she have to be so loving and understanding of JiHyung.. please hurry and get over JH and find another man that will treat you a hundred million times better and who will see your worth and truly love you.. how about Jaemin??? He's a great guy.. if only he wasn't SY's cousin i would have shipped him with SY...hehehe..

i love JH's mom!! She's one extraordinary mom.. I hope HG had a mom like her too. i can't imagine how HG ended up with such a mother.. but there are also times we get to see how much she cares for HG i guess.. i hate it how JH's dad only cares about his 40yr friendship with HG's dad and the embarrassment they got after canceling the wedding. he's so cruel specially on the part where his wife asked him if he would leave her if she got Alzheimers.. Screw you! that was just too muchhh..

SY looked so stunning in her wedding gown.. now that they're married i hope they'll have time to enjoy each other company before SY's Alzheimer's gradually worsens..

I have a very little knowledge of korean, to sum up todays episode 1. SY is pregnant(Test kit). she dont want to carry the baby as she doubts that the delivered baby will be disease-prone becoz of her. 2. But JY insist her to carry the foetus in her womb. 3. They go chek with gynaecologist. when SY hears the heartbeat of the foetus, she wants to deliver the baby. 4. Then, the couple goes and chek with the reg.SY's dr. he recommends her to stop the in-take of her medicines for the baby's good. 5. immdly JY regrets saying her before to continue with her pregnancy. So he is asking her to abort the baby. 6. But SY is stubborn and want to carry on. 7. Meeting with her m-i-l. But i dont think they told her reg. the pregnancy.

I dont understand the last part. Thy both fight and she cries in his arms.

I dont also fully understand the preview. Nice episode. The expressions of the leads are vry good.

Well, the speculating netizens were right, and I have to decide now whether to eat my hat with a kimchi side dish or just lashings of ketchup.

Very stuttery stream towars the end, so don't take this as the Definitive Version, but, in brief...

After bouts of nausea during the honeymoon meals, JH insisted SY go to a hospital in Jejudo, where the doctor asked her when she had her last period, and she couldn't remember. The doctor concluded that the most likely thing was that she was pregnant, but she refused to believe it or be examined further, insisting that it was just the side effects of her medications, However she equipped herself with two separate pregnancy-testing kits and got positive results from both, which she initially tried to conceal from JH. But late that night, unable to sleep, she admitted to him that she had to accept she was pregnant. (She ascribes this to forgetting to take her pill before what was meant to be their farewell meeting om the first episode, at a time when she hadn't yet recognised that the needed to keep careful track of such things). JH says this is wonderful news, and isn't she glad, too. She reponds that she most certainly isn't glad. She isn't going to afflict her own destiny of being a motherless child on a baby of her own. Wanting to abort the baby, she visits a gyny clinic (couldn't tell because of buffering dropouts whether this was still on Jeju island or back in Seoul) but when she hears the baby's heartbeat, she begins to think again. So they go to see her neurologist (by which time they are obviously back in Seoul) who says that it's not for him to decide, but personally he feels its in her clinical interests not to go through with the pregnancy. When she says that what she now wants to do, her doctor warns her that in that case, she will have to discontinue all her medication. This reverses JH's attitude, and he insists that she can't stop the medication and so accelerate her decline for the baby's sake. But now SY insists that she won't do what her mother did and abandon her child (This is more compelling in Korean where one can use the same verb she does, literally "to throw away" both for abandoning a living child and aborting an unborn one.) Then came a visit from JH's Mom to the couple at their apartment and only got a few scraps of video from then on (including JH's Mom asking SY was it alright to call her by her first names from now on)

so I don't know what the last minute or two contained.

Oh, and HG told JH's Mom today that she knew SY must be a wonderful person because JH loved her so much. In fact, she wished she could have SY as her older sister. And that's without ever meeting her. If she's good enough for Oppa, she's good enough for HG. I fear HG risks being kidnapped and whisked up to heaven by a passing patrol of angels. She's just too good for this world, yet Jeong Yoo Mi's fantastic perfomance (I never imagined from her earlier outings she could act anything like this well) makes her a wholly credible character while she's on screen.

You might want to modify your verdicts on the fathers (and indeed even on HG's Mom., a teeny bit a least) once you've seen tofay's episode properly subbed. All the characters here have lots of layers, and some deeper ones got revealed today where the parents are concerned.

Oh, and HG told JH's Mom today that she knew SY must be a wonderful person because JH loved her so much. In fact, she wished she could have SY as her older sister. Haven't seen todays episode yet.even the raw vids but i kinda knew my stand on the fathers and HG's mom will eventually change as the drama progresses..hehehe Hyang gi should meet a really good man... i hope we get to see her happy with someone before this drama ends.

Yay!! SY is pregnant.. it'll make their situation more complicated now.. and even more complicated if SY's family finds out about her Alzheimer's disease.. i really wish they'll have the baby but why do i have this feeling that JH will lose both SY and their baby.. me and my imagination..

In case anyone's mystified (as I was when I'd only seen the blurry live stream where the cellphone display wasn't legible) by what the first 30 seconds of ep 14 are about (the scene with SY soaking in the bubblebath (obviously at their honeymoon hotel) then sitting at the vanity table, half-absently choosing what ear rings to wear but with most of her mind visibly elsewhere, then the raw via the now legible cellphone display provides the clue. After a few seconds of preoccupied staring at nothing in particular, she reaches for her phone, brings up the text message sending screen with JH's name on it, but then presses the "info on this person" icon in order to see what is presumably meant to look to anyone nosing through her phone like a birthday: 70/1/7 . We can be pretty sure JH isn't 41, but we know from yesterday's episode that's in fact the entry code to their new apartment. So this little incident sets the tone for the episode by reminding us that under the brave front she keeps up for JH's benefit (and ineed her own) she has the ceaseless anxiety about her failing powers, and is sustaining a constant effort to test her memory and check her recall. Presumably she'd recollected how she'd needed to be prompted with the first digit of the code before she could recall it, and so she's concealed the code in her cellphone as a precautionary measure, but the look on her face suggests that she now wasn't sure again what the entry code was, so needed to check.

I wondered about this when it happened in episode 13. (her needing to be prompted for the entry code) My first thoughts were what happens when she comes home alone and without her cell phone? Since she's having problems remembering phone numbers with the exception of JH's phone number. I could visualize her not being able to get into the apartment and wandering the streets, not even being able to remember how to use a pay phone. Ah, this just gets sadder and sadder. Thanks again for the tidbits.
