The film 'Can’t Help It,' starring director Park Chan-wook and actors Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin, is set to begin filming.

Distributor CJ ENM announced on the 12th, 'Can’t Help It' will begin filming on the 17th," and "It's a work based on the novel 'The Axe,' which director Park Chan-wook has shown great passion for adapting into a film."

'Can’t Help It' (produced by Moho Film and CJ ENM Studios) is the story of Yoon Man-soo, an office worker who has achieved everything he wants and is living a satisfying life, who starts his own war to protect his wife and two children after being suddenly fired. It tells the story of a father driven to the edge of a cliff through Man-soo, who struggles to protect his family and the house he worked hard to build.

Lee Byung-hun, who plays the main character Man-su, met with director Park Chan-wook again after 'Joint Security Area JSA' and 'Three, Monsters'. Man-su, portrayed by Lee Byung-hun, is a father who is trying to find a new job after being fired from the paper company where he worked for 25 years, but is in a difficult situation. He is also a character who is driven to madness by the desperation to protect his family.

Son Ye-jin plays Man-su's wife Mi-ri, making her first appearance in a film by director Park Chan-wook. In the film, Mi-ri is a multi-talented and bright character who takes the lead in protecting her family despite her husband's sudden unemployment. Also joining the cast is Cha Seung-won as Go Si-jo, Man-su's rival, and Yoo Yeon-seok as Oh Jin-ho, a dentist at the dental clinic where Mi-ri works, making for a truly luxurious cast.

The original work of the film, 'Axe', is a novel by Donald Westlake. It has many fans as a work that shows the situation of workers in a capitalist system through corporate greed and the resulting layoffs of employees, while also vividly depicting competition supremacy.

Director Park Chan-wook has been consistently trying to make a film of 'Axe', and has even chosen it as "the work I most want to make into a film."

Especially, among readers who have read the original novel, there was an opinion that if 'Axe' were to be turned into a movie, director Park Chan-wook would be the best director. However, the movie 'Can’t Help It' will go one step further than the original novel and enrich the story through an adaptation that fits Korean society.

'Can’t Help It' is planning to wrap up filming within the year and proceed with production with the goal of releasing it next year.

South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook is set to begin shooting his adaptation of US novel The Ax on Saturday (August 17), according to distributor CJ ENM.

The English-language title of the film is ‘No Other Choice’ (the Korean title directly translates as ‘I Can’t Help It’).

It will mark the first feature from the Oldboy director since 2022 noir melodrama Decision To Leave, which premiered in Competition at Cannes where Park won best director and subsequently secured nominations at the Baftas and Golden Globes. He has since made US drama series The Sympathizer starring Robert Downey Jr. for HBO.

The upcoming film ‘No Other Choice’ is based on Donald E. Westlake’s 1997 novel, which was first adapted for the screen in 2005 by Costa-Gavras, titled Le Couperet (The Ax).

The Korean version centres on Man-soo, a middle-aged man who is fired from a paper company after many years of service and goes on a killing spree to eliminate his competition.

The lead role will be played by Lee Byung-hun, who previously worked with Park on 2000 mystery thriller Joint Security Area and the Korean part of 2004 horror trilogy Three… Extremes.

The cast also includes So Ye-jin as Man-soo’s wife and Lee Sung-min and Yeom Hye-ran as a couple who have dealt with the same experience of unemployment. Park Hee-soon, Cha-Seung-won and Yoo Yeon-seok round out the cast.

It will be produced by CJ ENM Studios and Park’s Moho Films. A release date has yet to be decided.

Park is one of South Korea’s most acclaimed filmmakers who broke through with Joint Security Area in 2000 before directing the Vengeance trilogy comprising Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance. Revenge thriller Oldboy became the first Korean film to win the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2004.

He subsequently made horror Thirst, psychological thriller The Handmaiden and romantic mystery Decision To Leave, all of which played in Competition at Cannes. Further credits include English-language feature Stoker and TV miniseries The Little Drummer Girl.

Update: We’ve confirmed the English-language title for Park Chan-wook’s next film is “No Other Choice”.

Following up his noir melodrama Decision to Leave, Park Chan-wook ventured into the world of American television with the forthcoming Max series The Sympathizer, adapting Viet Thanh Nguyen’s acclaimed novel and teaming with Robert Downey Jr. As revealed earlier this year, he’s now set to return to South Korea for his next feature and as production begins this week more details have been unveiled.

Set to begin shooting on this Saturday, August 17, Park will be adapting Donald E. Westlake’s 1997 novel The Ax, which the legendary Costa-Gavras first adapted in 2005. The black comedy thriller follows a man laid off from the paper company he worked at for 25 years. Some time later and still jobless, he hits on a solution: to genuinely eliminate his competition.

Adapted by Park Chan-wook, Lee Kyung-mi (Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, The Truth Beneath), Don McKellar (The Sympathizer), Lee Ja-hye (Decision to Leave, The Handmaiden), the cast
includes Lee Byung-hun, Son Ye-jin, Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min, Yeom Hye-ran, Cha Seung-won, and Yoo Yeon-seok.

Here’s an expanded synopsis of the novel:

Burke Devore is a middle-aged manager at a paper company when the cost-cutting ax falls, and he is laid off. Eighteen months later and still unemployed, he puts a new spin on his job search — with agonizing care, Devore finds the seven men in the surrounding area who could take the job that rightfully should be his, and systematically kills them. Transforming himself from mild-mannered middle manager to ruthless murderer, he discovers skills ne never knew he had — and that come to him far too easily.

Ahead of the release, a new title has been revealed via an intriguing teaser concept poster as 어쩔수가없다‘, with the English version being No Other Choice. Check out Park Chan-wook and his main leads below, along with the poster. Hopefully we could see this one turn up as soon as Cannes 2025.
